Why are the Geffen reissues of interest to "fans only" (Chalkhills #180)?
As a relative newcomer fan to the band's music (I prefer to think of their
music finding me rather than the other way around), I'm pleased that the
reissues happened about the same time I really had an interest in purchasing
the CDs - for once, the record companies got it right! :-) Having the
"extra tracks" on the CDs doesn't bug me a bit, either, seeing how now I
can enjoy the albums for that much longer. I do own the Brit import of
_Mummer_, and I can say that the sound quality seems to be a slight shade
better than the rest, although _Black_Sea_ being ADD helps a bit too.

Here the the lands of Houston, a local CD shop sells imports for around $10
or so - either they don't know what they've got, or they're trying to unload
them quickly. Either way, that let me get _Mummer_ for $10 while the domestic
reissue was going for $13, and (had I known) I could have picked up _Rag_
for the same price about a month before the domestic came out!

(By "domestic," I mean American issue. Sorry, for anyone reading this
overseas.)

Either way, domestic or foreign - I LIKE IT!

Jon Drukman and I have been working on transcribing the lyrics to
Terrorism. He listened intently, and I attempted to recall what I had
seem in Andy's lyric book that I looked at during the XTC Convention.
Here's what we came up with:

    Terrorism
    ---------

    Terrorism
You're writing your diary in innocents' blood
You're vain and you're ugly, you're no Robin Hood
You don't steal from the rich to help the poor
You just take life from both and what is more
You break your bread and drink
But post-confession you'll still stink of
    Terrorism

    Terrorism
But you're Sikh, Jew, Muslim and Christian, you say
Now which religion will you wear today?
And in whose Bible do you find your cause
That says bomb children in department stores?
I hope your god is pleased
To see all creation on their knees for
    Terrorism

    Terrorism
Angel of death with black woolen mask
Freedom they bring you is a long wooden cask
They never doubt that right is on their side
When right is rifle-shaped where can you hide?
    Don't want daughter sweet
To be target practice in the high street
    Terrorism

Originally Andy had written "Their ticket to Heaven's a long wooden
cask" instead of "Freedom they bring you is a long wooden cask".
Apparently he had revised the lyric by the time he recorded the demo
that eventually ended up on the 12-inch of "The Meeting Place".

As has been true the past few months, the latest issue of _Q_ magazine
again notes that XTC are in the studio working on a new album.

Andre de Koning has contributed a PostScript CD booklet for the _Go 2_
CD, much like the one I put together for _Rag & Bone Buffet_, including
lyrics and musician credits. The booklet is available from the
Chalkhills Archives.

In addition, I have done a lot of work on the XTC discography in an
attempt to make it a little clearer. If you would like to receive an
updated version, please send a message to "<chalkhills-request@chalkhills.org>"
and I'll send you one straight away. The new version is not yet available
using FTP from the Chalkhills Archives, but I will make it available once
the changes are made final.

Enclosed please find the lyrics to Andy's song "Always Winter But
Never Christmas" from the _Window Box_ cassette. Enjoy!

    Always Winter But Never Christmas
    ---------------------------------

    Always winter but never christmas
You won't open your box or kiss under this
How can I let you know?

Always easter but never egg giving
Crucify me, I just don't call this living
How can I let you know?

Can't you hear the bells ringing out?
Can't you hear the fishmongers shout?
That the way to live is celebrate and give
Stop it being, always winter but never christmas

    Always ageing but never birthday
Told your last joke and threw your mirth away
Oh how can I let you know?
    Always turkey time, never thanksgiving
Share some gold out, but don't just sit there sieving

How can I let you know?

Can't you read the words upon the wall?
Can't you hear the butcher boy's call?
That we need to share, love between each pair
Stop it being, always winter but never christmas

I'd unwrap you if you'd only step down from your tree
From your present, into some undone future with me

    Always winter but never christmas
    Always thatmas but never thismas
Oh how can I let you know?

Can't you hear the bells ringing out?
Can't you hear the fishmongers shout?
That the way to live is celebrate and give
That we need to share, love between each pair
    Warm it up
    Always winter but never christmas
