Well, I'm a little disappointed (The Disappointed?) with the choice of songs
here. After listening to the demo tape, I thought that "Rip van Reuben" was
the best (dunno why-- it's very goofy) and "Bungalow" was undoubtedly the
worst of the bunch. Sure enough, "Rip" isn't on but "Bungalow" is. Is there
no justice?

One other note-- I noticed a connection between Nonesuch and Joan
Armatrading. Of course you all know of Andy's work with Armatrading, but did
you also know that Gus Dudgeon produced her first album, _Whatever's for Us_,
and Dave Mattacks (I think... at least some ex-Fairport Convention members)
appeared on _Back to the Night_? And Steve Lillywhite, who almost produced
Nonesuch, produced _Walk Under Ladders_? Small world.

uh... this is kind of a dumb and belated note, but I just saw "the Fisher
King" again recently and was struck by how much the rejected radio
listener turned yuppie killing psycho in the film looks like a younger Andy
Partridge. Did anyone else spot this similarity in appearance, or am I just
...well... seeing things, I guess? (that's a rhetorical question)

Subject: Nonesuch some such

Greetings, XTC likers & lovers.
Just a few things of possible interest for you.
Regarding "Nonesuch": I looked up the word in a dictionary today,
it means "Something that is outstanding or unique". Well awright!!
I knew that I had seen a postage stamp with that name on it, so
I dug out the ol' stamp album and... Yes! From 1968, a Canadian
five cent stamp picturing the good ship "Nonsuch" (no "E") sailing
against a backdrop of icebergs and Northern Lights in the year 1668.
Of this I'm not sure: was that Henry Hudson's ship, and was he
discovering Hudson Bay (and Hudson River?) way back then?
History experts, speak up!
Heard on CFNY-FM radio today: "Across This Antheap" (!)
Maya and I went shopping yesterday, we bought a 12-inch single
by "The Wallflowers" with "Produced by Andy Partridge" displayed
on the back. Reduced from $7.98 to 99 cents, yet! Seen at the
same store was Primus' "Sailing the Seas of Cheese" CD and
cassette from Interscope Records. But no "Nigel" cover, and
no import Primus CDEP on which to find it! We may be making
a trip to Japan later this year, so perhaps we'll find it then...
Regarding Shonen Knife, Maya sez that they are fans of
the Beatles, XTC, and the Buzzcocks. The only Shonen Knife CD
available at the store was a CDEP called "Seminal Twang",
containing their songs "Space Christmas", a Christmas message,
and "Bear Up Bison". (There's that "Bison" again...).

A friend of mine has said that he has a tape of XTC, gotten from a friend
of his who had an internship at some kind of musical place, and met
Andy, found him to be the caustic friendly bitter wit we all know he is.
Andy gave the friend a tape.. it contains, among other things, a song by
the name of Jacob's Ladder (is it known to anyone? John?) And XTC's
answering machine messages! Supposedly they have multiple ones, a
country/western one, something like "Hi, we're recording and can't come
to the phone right now..." I am pretty excited to get that.. my friend
was pretty happy to hear about Dave Mattacks, he described Dave's
spontaneous, crazy fills, out of nowhere in Fairport Convention songs.
He hadn't heard of Gus Dudgeon...
----
Thank you Emmanuel, the news was really eXTCellent. I am very eXTCited
about the eXTCremely imminent new stuff. Ahem.. I've been reading
too much "gaffa"...
Which reminds me, have Kate Bush and the boys ever acknowledged eachother's
existence?
----
Which reminds me, Gus Dudgeon produced something (can't remember what) on
the new Two Rooms album of Elton John covers, which has got a Kate Bush
cover of Rocket Man.
----
In other news, I am going to see MY BLOODY VALENTINE tuesday at the Roxy
in LA. Equally innovative as the boys, in a different vein. Ahhhhhhhh.

Blackbirds Backwards Forwards....

While thumbing through the latest issue of "MONDO" I saw an ad for a
new Rhino Records release of two CDs and a video of various artists
from the MTV programme 120 Minutes. It listed XTC.
Any more info?

Subject: XTC landmarks in UK...?

  Hello Chalkhillians.

Since I'm going to UK in March, I would like to ask chalkhillians to
introduce or to recommend me some landmarks referring to XTC. While I
have an idea to visit Swindon, to tell the truth, I don't know how to
get there. (but I've ever been to UK 3 years ago.)

  Thanks in advance.

Ok, let's guess who wrote which songs! Here are my votes:

Colin Moulding: "The Disappointed", "War Dance", "Smartest Monkeys",
"Bungalow", "Wrapped In Grey", "That Wave".

Andy Partridge: "Then She Appeared", "Holly Up On Poppy", "Madame
Barnum", "Peter Pumpkin", "Omnibus", "Books Are Burning", "Rook" "The
Ugly Underneath", "Crocodile", "Humble Daisy", "My Bird Performs".

How about it?

Two new compilations containing songs by XTC have been reported.

Al Crawford <awrc@dcs.ed.ac.uk> writes:

You're the one who has posted about the "Kick Up The Eighties"
compilations in the past, aren't you? Thought you might want the
track listing for the latest one (Volume 7) which isn't out yet
    but is due soon...

The track selection, BTW, isn't in running order...

Volume 7 - Young At Heart

    The Bluebells Young At Heart
Lloyd Cole & The Commotions Rattlesnake
    Teardrop Explodes Treason
Big Country In A Big Country
China Crisis Working With Fire And Steel
The Ruts Staring At The Rude Boys
 => XTC					Generals And Majors
    Adventurers Feel The Raindrops
    The Bible Graceland
The Mighty Lemon Drops The Other Side Of You
    Bauhaus Ziggy Stardust
The Fall There's A Ghost In My House
    The Jam Funeral Pyre
    That Petrol Emotion Big Decision
Style Council Walls Come Tumbling Down
Fine Young Cannibals Johnny Come Home

Wonder what the guy who put this volume together was on? It
seems completely different in flavour from the others, including
several tracks that weren't even minor hits.

The "Kick Up The Eighties" series was released on LP, CD, and cassette
by Old Gold Records UK. XTC has appeared on two other albums in the
"Kick Up The Eighties" series, with "Senses Working Overtime" on Volume
1, and "Love on a Farmboy's Wages" on Volume 4.

The other compilation was described in Chalkhills Issue #189. It's
"Todd Rundgren: An Elpee's Worth of Productions", a compilation
consisting entirely of music by artists that Mr Rundgren produced,
including XTC, the New York Dolls, Patti Smith, The Tubes, and others.
The compilation was released by Rhino Records on 21 January, catalog
number R2 70519.

XTC's "Dear God" appears on this compilation, which I find surprising.

Not!
