Here's an item you can add to your XTC discography:

A second Australian release of 'The Disappointed' single. (Our first was
'The Disappointed'/'Smartest Monkeys' (demo)/'Smartest Monkeys'/'Humble Daisy'
in a paperboard (?) sleeve - that's the CD-5 track listing.)

The new one's got the following tracks:
 	'The Disappointed'
	'Making Plans For Nigel'
	'Generals And Majors'
	'Senses Working Overtime'
	'Smartest Monkeys'
Its presented in digi-pak format, with a different cover picture. The catalogue
number is TCVOZC142 for the cassette single, and VOZCD142 for the CD-5 single.
Both were released on 22/6/92.

(As an aside, this is another cheap ($Aus2.95; an CD album costs $Aus28 here)
good-value CD single released to try to cultivate interest. A number of similar
releases have been very successful with similar pricing and the bonus of a
couple of the artist's previous hits. 'Generals And Majors' and 'Senses Working
Overtime' have been XTC's only two Top 40 hits here in Australia. Last I
noticed, 'Nonsuch' had crawled to the mid-70s on the album charts here, so the
extra promotion won't go astray.)

Chalkhillians--

Does anyone happen to know (or has figured out) the lyrics to
_Always Winter, Never Christmas_? I would greatly appreciate
a copy. I can't understand Andy at all. :-(

I taped _120 Minutes_ again this week. XTC *still* has the number
one 'alternative' album; five contiguous weeks. I am most pleased.

I rented an XTC video compilation from Tower (Mountain View, CA) several
years back. On NTSC, 'natch. I don't remember ``Statue of Liberty''
being on it but I do recall: This is Pop, Life Begins at the Hop,
Making Plans for Nigel, Generals and Majors, Tower of London, and
Senses Working Overtime. I remember thinking it was too short and that
it was a pity it didn't include anything from Mummer or Big Express.

Can anyone fill in the blanks?

Subject: Who wrote the Homo Safari tunes?

Can anyone help me with an issue of authorship? I've been compiling all the
lyrics to XTC songs I have with authorship credits, and I'm lost on the
first four Homo Safari Series pieces ("Homo Safari," "Bushman President,"
"Egyptian Solution," and "Mantis On Parole").

Does anyone know which band member wrote which of these? The credits on
_Mummer_ clear up the last two pieces in the series, but I'd appreciate some
help with these first four.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Here's a quick review that appears in the July '92 issue of _Stereo_Review_.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

XTC - Nonsuch (Geffen)
Performance: Odd
Recording: Good

There's a fine line between the charmingly eccentric and the just plain weird.
In "Nonsuch," XTC tromps all over both sides of the boundary. When Andy
Partridge or Colin Moulding - the two writers - keep at least one foot on the
ground, their hyperimaginative songs can be one-of-a-kind gems. Partridge's
_Dear_Madam_Barnum_, for example, is about a circus clown who suspects he's
being two-timed by Ms. Barnum: "If I'm not the sole fool / Who pulls his
trousers down / Then Madam Barnum / I resign as clown." And even the
overindulgent allusion or the numbingly naive insight is often redeemed by its
springy, theatrical soundtrack. XTC hasn't broken new ground this time around,
but its peculiar pleasures are still there for the taking.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Below the review is a red-on-yellow picture of The Lads, with Andy out front
in his glasses and the cap he's wearing on the picture inside Nonsuch (although
I had to look back at the Nonsuch picture to be sure). Andy has his hands
together at shoulder height in an odd fashion. I'd kind of like to know where
this picture comes from; its probably the best I've seen of the band for some
time, and a poster for my wall wouldn't be amiss. :-)

Subject: Geffen issues without booklets?

I finally got around to completing my collection of the Geffen CD
reissues and picked up English Settlement and Go 2 while in Pasadena.
Then I opened them and discovered neither of them have lyric booklets,
just cheap four-page foldouts.

Now, all my other reissues have nice, satisfyingly thick booklets.
Are these two discs exceptions or did I get cheap ones?

Hi John,
We had some network work done around here last week and ended up off the
air for a few days. The last digest I got was #228. Have I missed any?
Is my email address still active in the distribution list? I hope they've
got us all set up now.

I finished reading "XTC: Chalkhills and Children, the Definitive Biography"
this morning. Boy, that's a mouthfull, what are we going to call this one,
"XTC: C&C, TDB", or maybe just "TDB" for short? ;-) I never realized just
how fragile that band was. We're lucky to still have them around.

Hi, Chalkhills folks. Just thought I'd update you on "Peter"'s
progress up CFNY-FM's "Thursday 30 Countdown"...

        8,9,8,5,4,3...

That's right, NUMBER THREE! And they're (sadly) not even appearing
in concert anytime soon. The Cure is number one (yet again).

An ad in Maya's Japanese "Music Magazine" offers for sale the
"Tiny Circus Of Life" CD. Limited edition, they say, only 2,000
copies were made.

And now, for your amusement, let me introduce the lyrics to
"Punch And Judy" from the Japanese "Beeswax" CD:

Gather round
Punch and Judy did it truely
And were married in a haste
In the maybe, using the baby
As a kind of roll mans pastry
She's growing fatter and her hair cut shorter
Looks much shorter than I dreamed
He's a drinker not a thinker
Baby spoiled as good can be

This must be make believe (repeat 2 more times)
Who do we know dear that acts like that

Punch and Judy

Punch and Judy in a semi
On a brand new couch from Glouster
Sunday lunchtime beautiful punch time
While he's getting his farm from Boston
She grows tired, canned he's fired
She goes round to see her friend
He comes back late......

(chorus)

Punch and Judy

Punch and Judy in a quarrel
She's walked out and she is mad
Now he's grown up, smashed his home up
Retribution must be had

Punch and Judy had a baby
Who brought them to married life
Mr. Punch has a broken hunch
That he must punch kid for this

(chorus)

Punch and Judy
(repeat 3 more times)

I've not seen the lyrics to this song anywhere else,
but something is very strange here!! (ggg)

The bootleggers, of course, do it again... tsk, tsk, tsk... more deception
in advertising, as 12/22/80 was not the final live XTC show. As a native
San Diegan I have to defend my town and remind the entire XTC universe
(well, at least a small segment) that XTC'c last concert was in San Diego.
At least, according to a recent interview with Andy appearing in the San
Diego Union. Oh, had I only skipped college to attend! :-)

Normally, I wouldn't believe anything I read in the SD Union.
However, in this one case I can vouch for their reliability, as I was
at that very show. I even bought an "English Settlement" t-shirt
(which, sadly, stopped fitting my college-freshman-no-longer body
several years ago). I remember being very shocked to hear about
Andy's collapse during the soundcheck in LA shortly thereafter, and
very surpised to read Andy's comments later about how terrible he
felt during that show. From my point of view, it was a great show.
Maybe that goes to prove Andy's comments about the inability of a band
to really connect with its audience -- here's this guy under great
emotional strain, but all we see is a rock performance.
