Robert Vanvliet (vanvliet@stolaf.edu) asked in Chalkhills #281 if _Dear
Madam Barnum_ ever came out as a single (or was his friend hallucinating).

The answer is: yes, but only as a promo single CD. I have it (it just
contains that one song, no fancy demo's this time). Bought it on a record
fair. Good luck if you go out to find it (and if you stumbe across a promo
for _Wrapped in Grey_, try to think of me!).

PS: I have the XTC biograhpy from Chris Twomey on order for over 6 months
    now and all the shop can tell me is that it's out of stock at Omnibus
    Press and I should wait until it's available again.
    Are there more people in Europe that are still nervously waiting?
    Is there someone who knows a store where I can get it NOW (and that
    ships to the Netherlands)?

Nothing much new to report as my final posting, just that I sent
a copy of The Bull with the Golden Guts to a Japanese XTC fan(atic)
named Shigemasa Fujimoto in a tape trade from way back. (Plus, he's
sending me $10 :-))

The other thing is, when I was sent the tape, the good people at
The Little Express said that a new issue is due out soon! (May
very likely have some news about Andy and Colin's new songwriting
efforts...)

If you don't currently get The Little Express, subscribe! It's
way cool!

- It's really sad that Wes is going.  Thanks for adding a lot to the
list, Wes.

I'm quoting Robert Sutton, who posted to the 4ad list that Martin Newell
has been working with Captain Sensible of the Damned.  The Greatest
Living Englishman, huh?  This should be interesting!  Robert says Newell
figures heavily on the Captain's newest CD..
I didn't know there was one, but Revolution Now! was really excellent.

As for Pulse magazine-- yeah, XTC is always all over that thing.

Pretty quiet out there now that summer's cauldron is at full boil.
I had a thought today, tell me what you think:

Andy Partridge is the Cole Porter of rock & roll.

By that I mean he writes witty songs with catchy tunes, just like Cole did.
Also, when I see him on TV, he's got the same sort of sly charm that more
befits a Cole Porter than, say, a Bruce Springsteen or Ozzy Osbourne.

Martin Newell, leader of Cleaners From Venus and Brotherhood Of
Lizards, a gardener by trade, pop music hero during his off hours, has
been making records for quite a few years now.  You may have read
about the Brotherhood's ``Green Tour'' of England in The Little
Express; The Brotherhood Of Lizards toured England with only bicycles
and acoustic instruments.  Martin Newell has been working with Captain
Sensible for a few years now, appearing and co-writing material on the
Captain's last two albums, _Revolution Now_ and _The Universe of
Geoffrey Brown_.  Nelson, the other member of Brotherhood Of Lizards,
left the band a few years ago to join New Model Army.  Martin Newell
claims XTC to be a big influence.

According to The Little Express, Andy Partridge claims that Martin
Newell is in fact _The Greatest Living Englishman_, but I'm willing to
be that Martin thinks that Andy is the one.  Martin says he may cover
an Andy Partridge song on the album, barring Martin writing a better
one.

Shigemasa Fujimoto tells me that the album will be released in the UK
on Humbug Records, perhaps on 26 July.  The Captain is rumoured to
have contributed a guitar solo on one track.

Subject: Wondrous new XTC information!

Shigemasa Fujimoto recently wrote to me.  He says that the Second
Supplement to the Wonderland XTC Discography is nearing completion.  I
must take this time to say that the Wonderland XTC Discography is the
most compleat discography of XTC and related works that I have ever
seen.  (Write for ordering information.)

In his letter he sent details of many heretofore unknown XTC-related
items.  All his information is in the latest Chalkhills XTC
Discography as well, but I am including some of the interesting
details here.

Shigemasa says, ``I've been told by a reliable source that Virgin made
500 copies of _Wrapped In Grey_ on CD and destroyed 450 copies and
that no copies made it to shops or radio stations.  Dave says he has
no idea exactly why it was cancelled.''

The Big Dish released a single called _Prospect Street_, and Dave
Gregory contributes guitars on the title track.

A Japanese compilation video titled _The Way They Were_ included a
November 1977 live video of XTC performing "Neon Shuffle".

On Marc Almond's album _Enchanted_, Dave Gregory played guitars on the
song "The Sea Still Sings" but 99% of his contribution was later mixed
out.  That song also appears on the _Madame De La Luna_ CD single in
Japan.

Dave Gregory played the guitar solo on the Johnny Hates Jazz song "Let
Me Change Your Mind Tonight", from their album _Tall Stories_.  The
song was also released as a single in various formats.

Dave Gregory also played guitar on Jason Donovan's _Mission of Love_
single, both on the title track and on the B-side "Whenever The Sun
Goes Down".

The all-star benefit song featuring one line of vocals by XTC, "Spirit
of the Forest", appears on _Earthrise -- the Rainforest Album_,
released in June 1992 in the UK.

XTC never did get to record their cover of "Humanoid Boogie" for the
Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band tribute album, to have been produced by Alan
Duffy, although ``for a while it was definitely on the cards''.

Check the discographies for even more nit-picky details.
