During the Oranges & Lemons radio tour, the boys performed live in
the radio studio on Cities 97.   I heard it but couldn't tape it.

BTW, O&L remains my favorite XTC album, after I snip out some of the
losers like "Here Comes President Gilligan" and such.  The last six
songs, Across this Antheap, Pink Thing, Miniature Sun, Chalkhills &
Children and the others are my vote for the best and most
representative XTC has to offer.  I've been listening since D&W and
don't much care for Nonesvch, not one lickle bit.  Owned Skylarking
for a year or so on cassette, but it never worked for me as car
music, so it got purged as a trade-in to the used record store.
Maybe I should give it another try.

Subject: XTC in MPLS

Someone asked why XTC would have been in Minneapolis a few years ago --
well, it was part of their radio station promo tour. I've been told they
appeared at KABL, a cable-only FM station that existed at that time (is it
still around?). I worked at KABL myself in 1988, but left to move back to
Seattle, and I've been kicking myself ever since for moving away too soon.
:) (Not only might I have seen XTC live in-studio, but if I'd stayed in
Mpls a few more months I might have gotten to see the earliest episodes of
MST3k, too!

Hello.  I first became a rabid foaming XTC fan when I heard Mayor of Simpleton
on Live 105.  I stayed up half the night trying to remember where I had heard
those harmonies before.  I finally realized it was wayyy back when I heard my
sister listening to Senses Working Overtime.  I bought the tape Oranges and
Lemons, raided my sisters XTC vinyl, and I was hooked.
And how did I find chalkhills?  I have no idea, i just happened upon the
archives somehow when i was supposed to be studying, no  doubt.
        I am a 20 year old music major at Whittier College, and I dream of
singing back up someday when Andy is finally convinced to tour.

_King Strut_ has been on my wish list for awhile and I still haven't
picked it up yet, and Ranjit no longer carries _The Naked Shakespeare_,
which I tried to order a few months ago.

But as far as underexposed albums goes...

What I really wanted to mention was Richard Thompson's _Mirror Blue_.
This disk is incredible, and I just can't seem to get tired of it. It's
been on my CD players for almost three months straight, and I'm still loving
it. Please, if you buy anything this year, do yourself a favor and buy this
disk. You won't be difappointed! :)

With regards to Chris Difford (of Squeeze) saying Aimee Mann
was a good singer:

an FYI: Squeeze played the fourth of july show here in Chicago,
and Aimee Mann was with them!  Hearing that, I was desperately
hoping that Dave Gregory would also happen to be on Keys, or on
Guitar (On the off chance!), but my hopes were dashed.

For all those interested, Squeeze was wonderful, if a little
*too* acoustic this time round.

Hey Chalky kids!
I was getting Little Express for about two years and I haven't received an
issue in so long I am worried I have been removed from the mailing list.
Horror of horrors! I could send a postcard but that is so Victorian. Besides,
my 1994ish space helmet makes it impossible to lick the stamp!

Subject: Curried Delights and the Road to XTC

To those of you wondering about XTC and their trip to Minneapolis' fine
establishment, The Sri Lanka Curry House, let me be the first to say "I was
there!".  Yes, it is true.  I broke bread with Andy Dave and Colin.  In fact,
I was chauffer for a day, as I drove them around Minneapolis in a rather
ridiculous four door white station wagon rental.
This all took place on their Oranges and Lemons radio promo tour.  While on
the tour I took some wonderful b+w photos and have decent copies of the two
acoustic sets they performed, one for KTCZ and one for the now defunct KABL
(god rest her soul).

I am curious to know, how many of you rabid fans are in posession of the
video "The Road to XTC".  I believe that to be the name of it.  This is the
video with Andy, Colin and David acting out the history of XTC in puppet show
fashion.  I have a 2nd generation, high quality copy of this video, direct

Yeah, it's actually the sound of water on a shower curtain in a
bathroom at The Manor.  There's a segment from _XTC At The Manor_
(I believe) where they talk about that sound.  It was supposed to
sound like rain, a rain that pours around you, grey, dismal,
without hope.  But some people thought it sounded like a man using
a urinal.  Especially since it has that bathroom ambiance.

So I'm bummin at the store for a new stereo cord and WHAMMO! - there in the
fully stocked XTC bin I come upon a strange face!

"Hello," I said.

And so we were married. BBC's live disk from the Black Sea tour, Dec 22,
1980. I breezed through the Chalkhill discography and didn't see it, but
I'm sure most of you know about it. If not, and it is rare, let me know.
The sound is great!! and what a fun live band they 'were'. Andy is
positively CHATTY!!

Just an FYI.  Presently, I believe that only Japan has released "Through the
Hill."  I'm ordering my copy from Japan (via Sound City  in Portland, OR),
because I was told the Japanese version has two bonus tracks.

Sound City is a very good dealer, but Japanese CDs are in general terribly
expensive in the  U.S.  Sound City's number is (503) 654-2196 if you have
VISA/MC.

The U.S. release date for this CD is supposed to be next week.

P.S. If you have a review of the CD, please try to include a "spoiler"
warning, so the rest of us who don't have the CD can be surprised.  (I'll try
to remember to do the same when I get the CD.)

   Hi again Chalkhillites, now I'll continue with the XTC interview
I "dubbed" from The Little Express:

ANDY: No, we didn't have any session bikes!! But we did attempt
to get an organ.
DAVE: Oh yes, we wanted a big Hammond organ, and Rob Andrews said
"I know someone who's got one. It's Verdon Allen who used to play
for Mott The Hoople; he lives in Hereford and occaisionally hires
his organ out". So we said, oh alright, let's have a go on it.
He came down with his Dad and we all had to manhandle it...
ANDY: Well, the fact that he came with his Dad was quite funny
'cause here's this almost legendary glittery rocker...
COLIN: And his Dad was telling us, all the time we were trying
to unload this organ, what a good player he was.
ANDY: Yeah, I think his old man was actually his agent as well!
DAVE: So we borrowed this organ and in fact it's the original
"Mott The Hoople" organ, but it's in wonderful condition, it's
been really looked after. They toured alot and they went all over
the place, but it's in beautiful condition; it had a sort of
brass badge on the front of it, and I can always remember when
I used to see them on Top Of The Pops with this big Hammond organ
with this big brass like an R.A.F. crest. That was their trademark
and I couldn't believe this was the same organ.
COLIN: He was extremely protective about this organ.
ANDY: Oh yes, he was very protective. I don't think he really
wanted to lend it to us. But what transpired is the fact that
there was this Leslie cabinet which is a cabinet that has a
speaker that whirls around inside it and gives that peculiar
whirling sound. I can't really describe it.
DAVE: It's like a rotating speaker, it's called a tone cabinet,
you hear it with a Hammond organ; it changes speeds and makes
that vibrato effect.
COLIN: When I mentioned those tracks from an old Mott The Hoople
album, that seemed to reassure him that we weren't just timewasters...
ANDY: That we weren't going to mess his organ up! Well, what we
wanted to do was put the vocals through the revolving speaker, and
when Verdon went away we took the back off the organ to plug a
microphone into the amplifier that's in the organ... it's a
reasonably legitimate thing.
DAVE: It's the accepted way of doing it, there's a special socket
in the pre-amp section of the organ.
ANDY: Right, but his kind of over-protectiveness about this organ
means that he actually came back into the studio later that night
to see what we were doing with his organ, and he hit the roof
when he saw that we had the back off his baby! "What are you doing
in there?"... "Oh, it's okay we're just plugging into the amp
at the back"... "oh you never told me that you were gonna do that!"
And there was a terrible bust-up, and what transpired is he
wanted his organ back immediately, so we packed it all up.
He couldn't take it that night but we put it in the corner and
assured him we wouldn't use it.
DAVE: But not before we'd gotten the basic track for "What In
The World" down!
