Anyway, this is my first post to this group. I'd tell you a lot about myself and my xtc fandom, but it really isn't all that interesting. ;-) I wanted to respond to the speculation about Peter Pumpkinhead. In an interview I saw with Andy Partridge the summer following Nonsuch's release (for my life I can't remember who did the interview--I think, god forbid, MTV) he admitted Pumpkinhead _was_ about JFK. Andy chose the name because, he said, he wanted to portray the President as sort of a folk hero--or, or specifically, a fairy-tale hero. This interview took place, I believe, shortly after Andy finshed his radio tour (in support of Nonsuch) of North America in 1992(?). Someone, as well, refered to the fact the JFK is presented as an outsider in Pumpkinhead (I'm sorry I don't remember who), and that seemed odd if the song actually was refering to the President of the US. I'd like to offer two possible explanations for such an interpretation of JFK: 1) Although JFK was our President, his administration was very anti-establishment. He took great pains to try to break down the existing infrastructure in some very important ways. His administration did have a kind of fairy-tale atmosphere to it (i.e. Camalot) which may explain Andy's choice of vehicle. In other words, he was an outsider to the governing bodies, young, idealistic (at least portrayed that way), and reform oriented. 2) Furthermore, Andy's perspective itself is of an outsider. Looking at the JFK administration from a uniquely English perspective may provide certain insights that we perpetually jaded Americans may never think of. Just a couple of possible explanations which may help to convince some that JFK is not such an unlikely candidate for Peter after all. ;-) Enjoy the music. Dave Rowland dr007d@uhura.cc.rochester.edu

The XTC song on the compilation is the one by David Dreams. Trick Bag
is a completely different band which has (almost) nothing to do with
XTC (unless someone can prove otherwise).

Nonsvch was also my first XTC purchase. In fact I had only heard Dear God
once on Night Flight several years before. I bought it because I was bored
at the time with what I was listening to and was hoping it would be
something different. It sure was! Marvelous album! To be honest, though, the
only other album I have is Skylarking, which I couldn't stand the first two
times I listened to it. But now, I like it every bit as much as Nonsvch.
I've been a little reluctant to get some of the older albums because someone
told me that they're nothing like these. I seem to get the idea from reading
Chalkhills that they're not as different as I have thought, so I'm planning
on getting English Settlement and Oranges and Lemons sometime real soon when
I get the cash.
I'll concur with whoever said that with any artist who's been around a long
time that you should take each album by itself and not necissarily compare
them to earlier albums. A lot of good albums are put down upon their release
as being trash by long time fans when in fact, they're just different. I saw
it happen twice last year to Yes' and Pink Floyd's new albums. Suppose it's
just part of human nature, though.

Hi all,
I'm new here and so glad that the list exists! I'm a huge fan, got the
bio" Chalkhills and Children" for Christmas and read the entire thing that
day! Anyway, just wanted to add my $.02 to the discussion of Peter
Pumpkinhead. I took the song to mean, and I assumed Andy was creating a
composite or hypothetical individual, not refering to any one person in
particular, but possibly many. It seems to me the song describes anyone who
speaks out against the prevailing cultural "wisdom" by speaking his/her own
truth, and how that culture (in the context of our modern society) reacts or
may react to that individual. There are several examples of Peter
Pumkinheads that I can think of, not limited to J.F.K., for sure. I'm not
even sure if J.F.K. would qualify as a Peter P. in my book, although he
certainly was intrumental in creating changes to the old order. I know lots
of Peter P.'s, some are my friends, they certainly aren't public figures in
a national sense, they make change and run into resistance simply by
expressing their own truth on a day to day basis. I think Andy may have even
been describing himself and some of the reactions he's gotten to the views
he presents in his music as well. What the interesting question to me is
why "Pumpkinhead", but of coarse, it could be an arbitrary image. Any
thoughts on this?
Maybe it was Halloween, wait, do they have Halloween in England? If I'm
crossing bridges already left behind, sorry.
Another comment about the Nonsuch thing. I personally like to see the music
transform as the band gets older. It only makes sense that the songs will
address different subjects, such as relationships, and address old subjects
in a new, more thoughtful, or softer way, after all, do angry young men stay
that way their whole lives? When I first heard Nonsuch I thought Andy might
be in the middle of a divorce, (thoughts on this welcome too, I know
nothing). I often find it funny how "rock" musicians get pigeonholed this
way, they're not expected to grow up or change their point of view, and
their music is expected to reflect the rebelliousness of youth, by
definition, even if the musician is fifty.
And one last...If there are any Chalkhillians who know where I may get XTC
videos in the Northwest, please email me. Thanks.

Thanks go to John White for providing an alternative running order for
Nonsvch. I understand it's your best-to-worst-order and I definately
disagree on a coupla points, but it beats hitting the 'shuffle' button
on my CD-player. The downside of this is that my player is 'not fast
enough' when it has to skip a song, so I sometimes hear the first
note(s) of a song that will be skipped. Oh well.
If anyone has best-off lists (or 'preferred playing sequence' lists) of
CD's I'm in for it. I also like the abstraction of entering the train,
pressing a list of numbers and then hear one of your favorite albums
(yup) coming by in someone's chopped-up version.
Listening to the album again, the next lines (from 'The Vgly
Vnderneath') struck me as possible candidates for further examination:
Did you ever try to prise away the mask
Go ahead, take a spoon and try
Did you ever try to take away the wheel
Go ahead, take a fork and try
Now I'm probably missing something, but what do the spoon and fork have
to do with taking away the mask/the wheel?

If you bought last Sunday's Boston Globe, you can use the $3 coupon that came with the comics section to buy any CD priced $11.99 or higher (like "Drums and Wireless"). Now, I wonder if someone can help me locate the recent XTC boot with the Helium Kidz demos. Someone had posted an e-mail address to order this, but I can't find the exact issue of 'hills. Or maybe someone can recommend a store near me (GBA) where I might find this? As an aside, I'm thinking of using my $3 coupon on "Depeche Mode 101," the double live set recorded at the Pasadena Rose Bowl. (Anyone who owns this, e-mail me with a critique!!!) DM has recorded some great songs; check out "Work Hard," "Told You So," and "Everything Counts." Oh, before I forget...a reliable source told me that Andy worked on Blur's "Modern Life is Rubbish" album and helped to produce "Sunday Sunday," "Chemical World," and at least one other track. (I think MLIR is uneven, and not as good as Parklife; although "Blue Jeans" and "Starshaped" are excellent tracks.) By pooling our video resources we will be able to provide a lot more enjoyment to our newsgroup. Reply to me directly with your thoughts and (hopefully!) the videos you would like to contribute. If demand is sufficient, I will review all contributions and choose those videos which will make the best dubs. There is deifinitely an edge to this album -- he's called Dave Gregory. Say what you will about the quality of the songs (and many of you have), but the guitars on that album are Dave's best ever. Listen to That Wave, Books are Burning, Crocadile, etc. The man smokes! Fast, tasteful, musical, amazing! I would stack the lead guitar playing on that album up against any of the "guitar monsters" of earlier eras and different genres. As far as the songs themselves, I think Colin's are the most difappointing. Can Bungle-o, Smartest Monkeys, and War Dance be written by the same man who gave us Generals and Majors, Making Plans for Nigel, Loving Memory of a Name, Sacrificial Bonfire and other great XTC songs? I hope for a better effort from Colin next time 'round. Try this if you get the chance. I recently had to make a 5-hour drive alone so I made a point of listening to the following: started with Waxworks, then Mummer, Big Express, Sky Larking, and selections from Oranges and Lemons and Nonsuch. It makes you appreciate both how great this band has always been and how much their sound has evolved while managing to remain consistent; you realize the impact different producers have had and, most of all, you marvel at the genius of AP. How does he continue to write such continuously great music? For you purists, I listened to White Music, Go2, Drums and Wires, Black Sea, and English Settlement on the way home. Brought me back to my youth, and made me wish Terry were back in the band. I came away from the trip loving each album more than before (but also convinced that XTC's best period was between Drums and Wires and The Big Express).
