------------------------------ Date: Fri, 2 Mar 2012 09:11:16 -0800 From: Wayne Klein <wtdk123@msn.com> Subject: Pops and ticks, videos and bits Message-ID: <SNT136-W5743757C103BD62D7A3C99F96D0@phx.gbl> While the "Skylarking" remaster isn't ideal even with the some of the additional dynamic range on the earlier CDs (and you can look it up--CDs have more dynamic range than vinyl does although CDs are limited to 16 bits while vinyl is more of a lossless format), I must be in the minority as I like most of the remasters (they aren't great mind you--but it does fix a flaw with the bonus tracks bizarrely put in the middle of the CD). Even "Skylarking" for its flaws is OK especially compared to more recent remasters. As far as the polarity issue, I'm waiting for a CD version that corrects the issue until then my go-to will be the Mobile Fidelity version for the issue with "Dear God" as part of the cylce. While I loved vinyl back in the day, I would disagree with the poster that states that they don't take extra care--especially with newer pressings you run into issues with problems with pressings and while cleaning them will help with some of the issues, I've grown weary of putting that much effort into caring for vinyl. I also had vinyl releases that sounded quite nice even after 20 or 30 years but I also had some that with time would develop crackles, pops and--I hate to say this--I don't care for surface noise all that much. I'm not going to debate the merits of each format (and each format has its own plus and minus for various things in each one's favor) but the ease of use and access springs to mind for me. I'd love to see a proper CD reissue deluxe edtion of "Skylarking" (and the promised "English Settlement" which is one of the best remasters by the way) and--Andy--where in the heck is "Rag and Bone Buffett 2" and Colin what ever happened to the videos for DVD you were working on? Time is passing and your fans aren't getting any younger. XTC is one of the few bands not well represented on DVD or Blu-ray. Let's change that guys as this is your legacy. Heck, if you don't have the time or can't be bothered hire me or Dave Gregory...someone who cares about the legacy to put it all together. Rant over.

Possibly, or then again possibly not, due to the exposure from the DFS commercial, the price of Wasp Star has gone nuts recently. A couple of weeks ago I picked up an A1 (used) copy of the CD for #2.65 via Ebay - currently the cheapest I can find (in the UK) are used ones for #16 +++. New - think of a number and double it... At least #30. Vinyl LP's are going for #45 +. If you're feeling really flush you can have the 7" box set for $600 via Amazon US... Surely someone owns the rights to put these out again, I notice Virgin are issuing yet another low price compilation of their XTC stuff this month, this Cooking Vinyl product seems to be becoming ever more elusive. Who'da thunk it - never mind investing in gold, stick it in Apple Venus products! :)

Paul was a respected and award winning author here in Australia. A lot of his writing was dark, twisted and unsettling but the person was nothing but warm, friendly and embracing. I was fortunate enough to have had Paul as a writing mentor and friend. He adored XTC and included them in several of his short stories. During the mentorship, we became friends - not only through our writing but through our tastes in music. The agreeable trio who made *The Artist* such a pleasure -- Jean Dujardin, Berenice Bejo, and director Michel Hazanavicius -- worked together for the first time in 2005-'06 on *OSS 117: Cairo, Nest Of Spies*, a French secret agent comedy, set in 1955, that fearlessly and even-handedly mocks the fetid Third World, Islam, and boorish Western (and especially Gallic) imperiousness. The three of them became such good friends that Bejo and Hazanavicius got married and named their son Lucien, after the Dujardin character's cover name during his Egypt mission. (If this is all so French, you ask, why is the hero working for the American OSS, predecessor of the CIA? In the books, the first of which (1949) predated James Bond's debut by four years, Agent 117 was a bilingual American from Louisiana who became France's greatest secret weapon. For *Cairo* and its equally spoofy sequel, *Lost in Rio*, he was reimagined as wholly French.) In one scene, Agent 117 knocks out three Soviet heavies with deadly yet dashing efficiency and explains (in the English subtitle) to his fair companion, "They came 'Russian' at me." Here's where I need help from a Francophone who has access to the movie. "They came 'Russian' at me" is a pun in English. Is it a complete departure from the French original, tossed in by a thoughtful translator for the benefit of spy-spoof fans in the Anglosphere, and if so, what did Dujardin's character actually say?
