Well, as far as anyone can divine, Dave Gregory's qualifications
didn't end up being the most important factor in who Ray hired to be
his guitarist. The bass player of his quite young backing band was
good friends with a session guitarist named Milton McDonald, and Ray
felt that his band would have better chemistry with him rather than
with Dave. Milton was hired, and only lasted about a year.  He was
replaced with the only guitarist I believe is better fit than Dave,
which is a guy named Bill Shanley. Bill is still with Ray and they're
excellent together.

I personally thought Milton was awful, and not entirely because Dave is much
more talented. Perhaps another reason Ray chose Milton is because he wasn't
ready to pull the trigger on having another lead guitarist named Dave who
had a high speaking voice.

Quite a coincidence to read that Ray Davies thought Earn should have been
the single.  I actually brought that up with Andy on Twitter the other day
and his response was:
"Virgin picked them after asking us...they would then ignore our choice"
So there you have it.

Oh, hi everyone!  I was on the list YEARS ago, and was on the first
Chalkhills' Children tape.  (It was the version of My Love Explodes with the
chords from Gloria.)  I've been following the website and decided to sign up
for the list again.  I was frankly surprised that a digest like this would
still be going in 2013!
