Remember the video tape tree from last fall? I know that Erik
posted the list a while back explaining the delay(s) - but it has
been 6 months now. Not to annoy anybody, but have folks been
receiving tapes lately, or at all??

I guess we're all so starving for new XTC material that we've
been searching for other bands to snack on. I've found
Boo Radleys and Pulp out there, who are not XTC-like in sound,
but more in scope, imagination, influence, etc. And, of course,
the long-awaited issue of Pink Floyd's "Relics" on CD helps!
At first, I thought discussion of other bands was a bit off
the scope, but now I really get into it! Beats "Dear God"
arguments, IMHO! ;)

Finally.... anybody know a source yet for the Demos 8 disc?
Midnight Records, maybe??

Thanx and a tip of my hat!

OK, completely non-XTC but I'm listening to this now so I thought I'd
post it.

On Radiohead's "The Bends", by far the best song is track six[*], which on
the sleeve is mistitled "(Nice Dream)". But really, surely what Thom is
actually singing is "Nice String"???

Well that's what it sounds like to me anyway. :-)

[*] opinion will change when I reach track eight.

I'm waiting for Jesse Jackson to post to Chalkhills and tell us to get

I think I hurt the speakers in the Honda. I played XTC too loud, and they
probably bulged on the outside in quite a comic fashion.

I like a lot of bands. I don't like a lot of bands. I'm a closet
Janet Jackson fan (pre-"janet.") Yay for me. I'd love to hear Barry
White do an XTC song.

If you can't find David Yazbek's CD in your store, order it on CDnow
(http://cdnow.com) I don't work for them, I've just spent most of my
allowance there. It's fun - you should try it soon. I had a contest with my
friend to see who could buy the most Mike Oldfield CDs the fastest. He won,
and I think the NBA's using my checkbook right about now...

I've chatted with Captain Scott about my favorite misheards. "I feel
like I'm walking around a telephone pole." "Sometimes I hear love
sigh." All of the words in "Leisure." And there are so much more!

This little blackbird is not even going to insert her $.02 into this
black/white music discussion because she finds it *wayyyyy* too amusing
when people discuss her "cultural roots". (Consequently, she also feels
guilty that in most of her CD collection, "white music" outnumbers the
"black music" and now she must scramble to her sister's place to steal
her TLC and Jodeci CDs.)

And now for something completely different. I was cruising the Web the
other day where I found a homepage for--get this--an XTC MUD! Yes, it's
actually named XTC Abermud. From the little I read, it's supposed to be
a roleplaying game where you fight monsters and go on quests and stuff.
I tried to play it but something was wrong with my server. I'm going to
try again later on, but if anyone's interested, the address is
xtc.inetu.com 6969 or 205.147.201.3 6969. Wouldn't it be cool if one of
the quests involved rescuing a certain simple mayor from the clutches of
a Geffen griffin...?

I think the bootleg donations is cool. I'll be willing my measly pittance.

In the misheard lyrics category, my mind always translates Colin's Ten
Feet Tall "from strength to strength" to "from stranger to stranger".
Hey, it makes more sense to me, okay?

And finally, I read Roger Ebert's review of "James and the Giant Peach"
the other day. I loved the way he summed up the music for it, at the
very end of the review...

"Oh yeah. There was some songs too..."

That there was going to be an interesting e-discussion on race in the
music industry, I would have written a lot sooner! I think a good place to
start when an individual feels concerned even ashamed when such an issue is
brought up is to simply look into the history of twentieth century music in
the U.S. and in their own countries. It is a well known fact that the
attempts to thwart the early years of rock n' roll (the pappy of pop) were
mostly based from the fact that conservative types didn't want their
youngun's listening to anyone but Pat Boone(I had seen some footage of him
singing Tootie Frutie...ooooo SCARY!). Then on the other hand, even thought
the Beatles had intense popularity from the sixties and into the
seventies, some new bands in the U.K. started to have strong influences of
Jamacian Ska and African rythms(I think even Andy could attest to doing
some of this himself).
Being a woman of color from diverse backgrounds, I wouldn't make an
issue of whether or not any one individual listened to other artists from
different cultures or not. A major issue in the African-American
community(as far as music and artists) has been the way MTV has omitted
artists in the past. It's more of what MTV and some radio stations do, not
so much everyday people.Like TV, when you transmit hours of entertainment
and information out to millions of people, it's best to let others know how
vast the world is and how everyone takes part in it. The music I have
stocked up on has varied from Kate Bush to the Disposable Heroes of
Hiphoprisy.
All I can say to those concerned is to simply explore what is out there.
Mr. Partridge has set a very good example of this by listening to music
>from not only other cultures but from other eras.

I want to end off by saying that I'm glad that people take issues like
these under consideration. I've always felt that the fact that people even
think about others is enough, that's all I ask.

Keep up the good work!

Cecile

So I'm wondering what's the orgin of the Drums and Wireless tracks. I know
they're from the John Peel Radio show but I'm wondering if the tracks are
performed live and on the air or if they're pre-recorded and then just
played back on the same programme as John Peel interviews Andy, Dave, or
Colin.

Regardless, I'm a little disappointed that they recorded those tracks
almost identically to the versions on the albums. (The exception being
the tracks with Barry Andrews playing - he seemed to willing to toy
around with the songs a little bit.) Maybe XTC's absence from live
playing has made them a little timid when it comes to reproducing their
songs. (It would've been a little more rewarding for the listener if
they would've mixed things up a bit - a reggae version of 'No Thugs',
perhaps).

On the other hand, though, it is nice to see a band that can reproduce
'live' what it does in the studio...

I finnaly got around to doing my video here it is:
6 Men dressed in Army Uniforms are seated around a round
table. We see their nametages: General Partridge, General
Moulding, General Gregory, Major Andy, Major Colin, and Major
Dave (hey man -- equality). They are writing up some plans. One
of them puts the plans into an envelope and hands it to a man who is
bending over. He stands straight up with the envelope and we see
that he is ten feet tall. He walks out of the door into a crowded room
with flying radios (they're in motion), a scissors man, and a picture
of Picasso's Guernica. He glances at the envelope. It says "For
Nigel." The man brings the envelope to a doctor who is measuring
the beating of a mermaids heart. As the man gives the Doctor the
envelope his patient smiles. The doctor runs away with the
envelope to another room. He's quickly reads it and then starts his
own letter: "Dear God," As he gets to the second line his writing
turns to scribbles as he falls asleep. The camera pans out for a few
seconds then pans in as the door opens and another military man
("Sergaent Rock") comes in and shouts something, we can only see
his lips move, but he obviously says "Wake Up." The Doctor
Jump[s]. The get up and walk out the door together. They walk
outside and the camera pans out to the sky. We see stop frame
footage of the clouds move as the song ends.

Way back in issue #98, Michael Wicks [mwicks@gol.com] kindly provided us
with his impressions of "Drums And Wires"; and most entertaining it was too.
I noticed a tiny detail which started to set my heart pulsing-pulsing...

Michael mentions the liner notes, including the Jethro Tull and George
Chambers references. Is the brass section on "That Is The Way" also credited
to something like "Herb Alpert & the Marijuana Brass"?

I think what we have here is that the Japan issue of D&W seems to include
some or all of the foldout insert that was included with original UK Virgin
D&W vinyl issues. This insert had a large colour photo of the band in
Townhouse studios - Andy lying on the floor, facing us, with the others
grouped standing behind him. It also had lyrics to every song XTC song
released to this point, including the D&W songs, even "Chain of Command" &
"Limelight" (freebie single of the time). Finally, of course, there were the
usual credits, production & recording details about D&W.

Is this true Michael? Can you supply Chalkhills with more details on the
Japanese D&W booklet? I'm sure many of us would like to own a CD of this
album which improves on the shoddy packaging of the UK CD version (wrong
tracklisting, no booklet, no lyrix, etc). Also, what's the full
tracklisting of the version you've got?

It would sure make my day if you were to confirm this "fantasy" for me!

OK, the subject's a tribute to The Proclaimers...

Having read and enjoyed this mailing list long enough without a
contribution, here goes...

1) I've seen plenty of "favorite" XTC songs or "song of the day" and as one
of the graybeards here (1st XTC: 1981), I really enjoy going back to listen
to things I haven't heard in far too long. Anyhow, a vote for "Battery
Brides" as most underrated XTC song. Go back and give it a listen.

2) There's much talk here about the battle against Virgin and AP's backlog
of material. Well, I've always been intrigued by the idea of Andy doing a
musical! Obviously, part of his brilliance is the melding of the music and
the fantastically clever lyrics. If he had the desire to stick to a theme
over several songs, I think he could write an amazing musical. I don't know
that it would go down well with the Andrew Lloyd Webber lot, but we Popsters
can go to the West End, too, you know. Anyhow, just a thought...

3) Thanks to jh3 for his MIDI renditions of the Homo Safari songs (reachable
from the Chalkhills web site). They've been great fun. BTW, any
Chalkhillians heard of a find band called RJ8?

Well, It looks like I spoke too soon. I called my so-called perfect XTC
candidate and he said in a I-swear-he-was-quoting-from-a-review voice, "At
times the words were thoughtful, but I felt the music lacked energy." Ouch!
Perhaps it was my fault for giving him the more mellow _Skykarking_ &

Oh, well. Someday I'll be able to share XTC with someone who'll appreciate

The Canadian music video channel MuchMusic ran an in-house
production called "Son Of New Wave" on Tuesday. The intent of the
hour-long feature was to compare the latest Pop bands (Blur, Pulp,
et al.) with the New Wave predecessors. XTC figured into the
  programme in three places:

  1. A clever segue -- Blur was shown (in the video) singing "boys
who love girls who love boys who love girls who love" (quick cut to
the "At The Hop" video) "BOY AND GIRLS".

  2. In an interview Robin Wilson of The Gin Blossoms admitted he had
been in a new wave cover band. The artists/songs he identified as
being part of their repertoire were The Jam, Elvis Costello,
"Turning Japanese" (The Vapours), "My Sharona" (The Knack), and
"Senses Working Overtime" (a fragment of the video was shown).

  3. (The best part) A short MuchMusic interview segment with a
  rather young Colin Moulding.
Here's my transcription: (short clip from the "Nigel" video)
Q: "Making Plans For Nigel" -- what was it about?
Colin: It could have been John or Miles or [cut to shot of Andy
cleaning his glasses; bad editing makes it impossible to see who
says "Barry", although I think it's Andy -- remember, this was
after Andrews was no longer part of XTC] or anybody. It could
have been any name you care to choose, as long as it's English.
Because in England at the moment there's something very naughty
     going on.
     Q: What's that?
Colin: Well, there's parents sort of saying "We'd like you to be
so-and-so-and-so in a certain sort of job." See what I mean?
But they personally would not like to see themselves in that job.

It was a rather entertaining programme; keep your eyes on your tv
  listings for a re-broadcast.

The following appeared in the March 29, 1996 _Entertainment Weekly_:

Re: The Verve Pipe, Villians(RCA)

"One could call this debut's merging of power chords and soul-baring
wordplay an earnest attempt to bridge the indie-alt/classic rock
divide--classic grunge, if you will. Or more succinctly, Pearl Jam Lite.
Perhaps the work of the poor man's Live. Or maybe it's just a bloated,
cringe inducing bore. Rating: D --Mike Flaherty"

Ouch!

Any comments? Anyone heard the album?

Hello Fellow Chalkhillians!

I haven't written in a while, so I'm logging in here to express a few mostly
worthless opinions...

I finally got a hold of Twomey's book and polished it off pretty quickly. I
noticed some definite similarities between XTC's youth and the Beatles'.
Otherwise, it seems like the band has been a pretty frustrating experience
for the boys. Going back to a previous topic, I wouldn't blame them if they
did pack it in due to all the hassles, but I would certainly not want them
to end their collective effort.

I also got a hold of Andy's Thru the Hill album and I thought that it could
dkdfe adsfie .....ZZZzzZZZzz.... Oh sorry, I just fell asleep again while
listening to it. Sorry Andy, but it's definetly not going to stay in my
listening collection.

I also got a copy of Testimonial Dinner, which is an interesting diversion.
However, after listening to this CD, I just felt more like hearing the
originals. I don't think any of the covers are as good as the real thing.

Not having the slightest idea who the Dukes were prior to reading Twomey's
book , I have since been trying to get a hold of Chips... but the best I can
seem to do is Psonic, which Blockbuster has on hold for me and I will pick
up shortly. Anybody know where Chips or 25 O'Clock can be found in the Los
Angeles area?

That's all for now folks...

Dave G.

(You only get out what you put in... :-) )

Subject: Off The Record

I recently came across a promo radio show LP featuring XTC that I have not
seen mentioned in the Chalkhills or Wonderland discographies. The album is
called "Off The Record" and it was aired the weeks of May 15 and May 22,
1989. It is hosted by Mary Turner and includes four interview segments with
XTC. Also interviewed on the show were Bonnie Raitt, The Replacements, Elvis
Costello, Julian Lennon, and Cruel Story Of Youth. You might be able to find
this LP through Goldmine dealers that specialize in radio shows.

<I betcha I'm the only one on the Chalkhills list that owns recordings by both
<Miles Davis and Ministry. Anyone care to top that?

ok, pete, let me give it a shot. looking through my collection, might i offer
a similar dichotomy response?? owning recordings by...

sepultura and barbara streisand??
nusrat fateh ali khan and the B-52's??
jefferson airplane and tom jones??

egads, scary that...

i'm all for offering the lads some sort of compensation for the boots that
circulate, as well as copies of andy's new songs (how these come into
people's hands i never know). if someone could set up a way for xtc fans
to get some bread to them (and it was on the up and up), i'm sure there
would be quite a few of us who would offer. seems only fair. i bet
someone like mark fisher (are you out there mark??) might be a good
candidate, as he is in contact w/ andy from time to time. any other
suggestions??
