Well, I don't know about the others, but the XTC-Byrne connection is quite simple, as Byrne did the vocals for Robert Fripp's "Under Heavy Manners", which these days is found on the same CD as the League Of Gentlemen stuff which, of course, Barry Andrews plays on. You are the man. But Smartest Monkeys is poopoo. I love the melody, but the refrain is tired. Your voice sounds great. BUT it's the lyrics. Someone in a recent posting actually called the SUBTLE! I can't figure that out, b/c to me they are about as preachy and direct as things get. To me, it's way overdone. Also, on a similar note, I think two songs are quite enough for Colin to use the phrase World War 3. (Generals and Majors / Wardance). re: Bungalow GREAT song, and to respond to someone else who went around singing BUNGALOW when it first came out, let me just say that I'm part of that club. Almost got fired from the restaurant I was working in when Nonsuch came out because I kept going up to people and bellowing 'BUNG-GALOW! BUNG_GALOW! BY....THE... SEAAAAAAA!!!'. Anyhow, it was just a phase I was going through and I grew out of it. re: Next Drummer I think Stewart Copeland would be a great choice. As for Terry Chambers, my recollection is that he left the band during the Mummer sessions partly because of the drastic change in the direction of the band's sound, and also to be with his girlfriend in Australia. (i read this in chalkhills and children) I'm not sure his drumming would be suitable for the band anymore, just as I think that Barry's keyboards would sound a bit weird on a new XtC album. As for other drummers, well, I think Prairie Prince would be great with a better engineer! Just think about Sacrificial Bonfire, etc... marvelous percussion. re: Bass Players McCartney is STILL a great bass player, and not a bad drummer either! (hmmm....nah) Another bass player I think you're all ignoring, and wrongly so, is the Egyptians' Andy Metcalfe, who is amazing live! Has a wonderful, very individual sound on his fretless, and he's always right on, where tone and rhythm are concerned. Just listen to Robyn Hithcock & the Egyptians' "Lady Waters and the Hooded One" for proof. re: Yazbek's Nose Pinnochio's Nose is a great song, which I hated at first and now love. I can't believe you guys are talking about 'Change My World' sounding like Andy but at the same time not discussing how much like Andy that Yazbek sounds on '...Nose'. It's amazing...it sounds just like him. Indeed, I think it's the most XtC-ish song on the album, which is perhaps both a good and bad thing. It IS a great album, and for those of you who are considering Japan to find it, just check out CD-Now on the web, for much more reasonable prices. re: New Album Title How about 'Deflowered'? It's pastoral and gives a nice kick in the teeth to Virgin. I'm not so sure you're right about this getting the album title from the previous album thing. Oranges and Lemons is a nursery rhyme, and the reason the album was so titled, I believe. Besides, Ballet for a Rainy day says 'Orange and Lemon', which is not the title of the subsequent album. :P re: DEMOS / TAPES / GIMME (please?) I'm looking for the Bull/Verne stuff, which I've never been able to find, along with the James and Giant Peach Demos, or anything else fairly recent. I know there has been a lot of discussion about whether it's right to hand these songs around. But think about it, if everyone gets a copy, then the pirateers will have no market. If only a few have it, it is more likely that people will go out and buy a bootleg. I don't have a lot of rare XTC to trade, other than a videotape of their first 12 videos or so, starting with This is Pop and ending with Senses Working Overtime. I also have some rare Beatles and McCartney things, and finally a very rare (only 1000 made) double disk of Badfinger's three Apple albums, one of which was produced by Todd the Runt himself. I also have some Elvis Costello and Robyn Hitchcock rarities. re: Apology I'm sorry this was so long, after reading a zillion volumes of Chalkhills all at once, I had a lot to vomit from my brain. Sorry. Too lazy to have a proper signature and quote, Constantine Pappas

Is there anyone out there for >who can say that it is? (Raises hand) I ^think^ I've gone on record with this before, but if not, yeah, ^Go2^ is bar-none their best album. Partridge's tunes are sharp, Moulding's never lose a beat, and Andrew's 2 compositions give the album stylistic elongation. And the music! The frentic interplay between Partridge's bursts of guitar and Andrew's loopy, chunky keyboards creates a euphoric tension that cannot be equaled. Add in the engine room, with Colin's embrace of dub, funk and punk in his bass styling and Terry's hyperactive drumming, and it's a recipe for a legendary album. ^Go2^ is the only XTC album I can play front to back without even thinking of hitting the "FF" button. In fact, I'd go as far to say it's one of my top ten fave albums OF ALL TIME. And no, this post is not a joke. I am completely serious about this. I appreciate all other opinions, and I certainly emphasize with other choices, but ^Go 2^ is the one for me. So there you go, Dave. If you actually *read* what I wrote, I said that these punk bands have to keep belting out their old hits to hang onto an audience that wishes it was still the summer of 76, while XTC refused to be constricted by such a shortsighted fanbase. They progressed and - as can been seen by the divisions that crop up in here - this created a split in their fanbase; some hate the new stuff, others hate the old. But they are not still belting out variations of Science Friction to please a bunch of 30-40 year old new-wave casualties. They grew up, and a lot of their fans did. >they were forced to because of Partridge's stagefright! Which Andy has said grew out of the lack of visible cash AND the feeling that they were't doing the songs justice - "Feeling like we're just the jukebox with a conscience in the corner". With the crew setup XTC had at the time - where there was no money to spend on the main band members, let alone on string and horn sections - the band would have to work on each track in the studio with the permanent thought of, "how are we going to do this on stage?". Yes, I would love to see them play live. But, perhaps if they hadn't had the break we wouldn't be getting the multi-layered, finely textured music we've been getting. God knows I wanted them to, but they didn't have time. Dave Matthews was going to do "Nigel", but as his career burgeoned around the time I was putting together the album, he backed-out (at the last minuted, I might add). Al Kooper (a Certified Brilliant musician) sent in a kooky, winning version of "Nigel" that the label didn't like. It exists somewhere-- I guess in Al's studio. THe best unused cover was The Verve Pipe's "Blue Beret" which was pushed aside by their own version of "Wake Up". Now, I wish I had put both on the album, but again, the label wasn't into it. You have to choose your fights with the powers that be. I had to fight for Space Hog, and now look where they are. Incidentally, I played on a bill with the Verve Pipe in Philly and they were great live. Also-- To the guy who hates "Pinnochio's Nose" on my album-- you'll be pleased to note that it's Andy Partridge's least favorite cut on the record. To the guy who loves "Pinnochio's Nose"-- You're right. Andy and that other guy are wrong. Thanks, Yazbek

And, of course, Andy coined a cool word too. :) PS. Ok, ok, so there aren't exactly that many songs about man = monkey. (Dave Matthew's "Proudest Monkey" is the only one I can think of offhand...ants are much more popular...hey, wait! XTC has done that too! :) I apologize for my comment; obviously Lack Of Early XTC Album Syndrome was affecting my mental processes. :) However: I still think the whole thing is just too cliche and, well, boring for XTC, especially as done in TSM. It, IMHO, suffers from the same debiliating disease as "Down In The Cockpit": the attempt to deliver a message got in the way of the music and the lyrics. This is all just my opinion, of course...as long as you don't shoot at me, camp out outside my house, or call me up and play TSM onto my answering machine, I won't disrupt your beliefs on the subject. :) /----------------------------Joshua Hall-Bachner----------------------------\ | particle@servtech.com http://www.servtech.com/public/particle/ | | "Life is like a jigsaw. Also, the common practice these days is to put a couple of new tracks onto Best of's, so there might be some new stuff after all. On the subject of Drummers, to put in my 2 cent's worth.I was never that enamoured with TC, in fact most of my favourite XTC stuff doesn't have him on, and I have been a fan since the 3dEP days. IMHO Dave Mattacks is the guy for the stool, but failing him, Pete Thomas is also suitable i.e the song is paramount, not the need to show off technique, and both these guys fit the bill admirably.

I'll be SURPRISED. some of XTC's best albums are those that differed quite dramatically from the previous record. i'm thinking of English Settlement in particular. there have been many many good suggestions, John Leckie would be alright too. BTW: in defense of NONSVCH: what a great pop masterpiece! "Books Are Burning" could have fit right into side two of Abbey Road (in fact the trade-off guitar solo at the end seems inspired by this). and how can you not like THAT WAVE? listen to Dave's amazing house-burning-down guitar solo if you don't like this song-then tell me it's not worth the time. sure, some of it's a little poppy, a little silly, but what great pop record isn't? Humble Daisy is a fine piece of jazz, mellow, gentle and lovely... I could go on. drummers: I couldn't really think who was suitable, and a most unsuitable name kept popping into my mind. in the meantime, John R. has mentioned a "jazz" drummer and promptly been trounced on for doing so....the same respondant said that my mental choice was also "unsuitable". (please remember WE are not actually SELECTING the drummer on behalf of the band but MAKING A FRIENDLY SUGGESTION. having said that, the name that kept impinging itself upon my consciousness was BILL BRUFORD. at first it seems quite a mismatch....but have you ever heard his work with TRIGGER, Roy Harper's band? Anyone who can go from Yes to King Crimson to Genesis and then join a "rock group" led by an eccentric (genius) folk singer and make it work is pretty capable. I can hear that snare popping already but this time with an eccentric pop genius leading.... THE BEARS: yes they are very very good...we've seen them a few times here in San Diego. And I do agree, "Fear Is Never Boring" is a fantastic pop song, and I had the opportunity to talk to Rob Fetters (guitarist extraordinare and composer of the song) and told him it was the best song on the album. But BOTH the Bears albums are great, although apparently out of print. You can get both THE RAISINS (pre-Bears) and THE PYSCHODOTS (post-Bears) from POSSIBLE PRODUCTIONS. I have not heard either of these, but I'd imagine they are also quite good. Solo Adrian Belew stuff varies, but there is that early CD compilation of stuff >from his first three albums DESIRE OF THE RHINO KING which is better than nothing. Otherwise I very highly recommend his newest HERE....not a bad song on it, and amazing guitar as always. The Bears were a great live band too, and Rob Fetters proved himself near as good a guitarist as AB...and apparently the drummer has terrific stage fright (sounds like someone we know). so anyway, please don't rush the boys, let them take their time, choose a good producer, choose a good drummer and I for one will be happily surprised by whatever they turn out.... dave

If you have any questions about some of the names, I suppose you could email me and ask, but you may have more luck directing the question to everyone on the list. And as far as spelling goes, I did the best I could. (By the way, anyone out there ever hear THE BEARS? And what >ever happened to them?). yeah, the bears are a great band!! their 1987 recording that includes "none of the above" and "superboy" is a classic, and one that i bet a few xtc fans would enjoy. i had the pleasure of seeing the bears here in santa cruz two years ago. without adrian belew, the band is known as "the psychodots," and they were the opening band for adrian. they also have a few cd's of their own under their belt, good ones at that. the bears put on a _great_ show, very high energy. one of the highlights was when rob fetters played his guitar w/ a blown-up balloon. after the show i had the chance to meet them all, got my cd signed, and must say they are all a nice bunch of folks. as far as i know they're still together occasionally. and as for adrian helping to produce the next xtc album, a hearty thumbs up. peace to all, becki "in a world of individuals, comparison makes no sense at all."

You can't compare >XTC with some retarded punk band! No, I don't suppose you could. No punk band deserving of the label would be retarded enough to hide behind a prima donna artiste facade when the music industry pounds them into career ignominy. "Oh, we were robbed!" whine the boys. Hm. Maybe if you didn't get so used to living on advances from major record labels, you wouldn't be in this mess, guys. Pound for pound, Stiff Little Fingers are a hell of a lot smarter and less impressed with themselves than XTC ever were. >I'm sorry Mick & Simon, but I think your opinions in this quest- >ion are complete bullshit.:) >They didn't CHOOSE to stop touring, they were forced to because of >Partridge's stagefright! I think that some of XTC's current mat- >erial would be great to hear live. I can't see any problems with >performing the newer material live Man, have you ever performed anything live in your life? Starting with English Settlement, the arrangements became somthing NO humans could dependably pull off live, topping their already-incredibly-high standards of tunesmithing with damn near impossible vocal sweeps, immensely precise guitar soundings and inhuman drum performances. Upset tummy or not, Mr. Partridge morphed the band into a studio-only unit by way of writing & recording (gorgeous) stuff that really COULDN'T be done live with any hope of performance consistency. >, not with todays technology. "Today's technology?" Huh? I've got news for you: there ain't no Terry Chambers In A Box, and there never will be. What's more, save a few Prophet V fills, XTC's greatest work had NOTHING to do with technology. Everything that made XTC great was directly related to rock aggression working in concert with beautifully odd voicing and harmonizing. The day when Terry wised up and quit XTC (according to the book, right smack dab in the middle of recording "Love on A Farmboy's Wages" -- talk about knowing when to say when!) XTC's prospects as a live band, already tenuous by way of arrangement and performance demands, died outright. >I've seen Paul McCartney perform Beatles songs from the late >sixties period that I heard were supposedly too "complex" to per- >form live, and it was brilliant. Yeah, sure. When was the last time you saw Paul McCartney belt out "ey-ee-ey-ee-eh-HEY!", in key, WHILE leaping around AND accurately playing the twisted rhythm guitar line with any energy? What was the last McCartney song that wasn't a dippy pastoral snoozer? When was the last time you saw Paul McCartney emit any energy AT ALL? (Rummaging through boxes of Lennon outtakes doesn't count.) >So, I'm really looking forward >to see XTC live, and hopefully they will play a couple of gigs >here in Sweden! Good luck. If Steely Dan comes through, you might want to just go to that & squint your eyes - it's just about the same thing. As far as I'm concerned, XTC live in my town won't be a priority unless they wake up and bring Terry Chambers back and turn themselves back into a rock band. A RETARDED rock band, thank you very much. -r :: Rob Warmowski Automatic Media Group / Chicago, IL http://www.automedia.com
