Hi All,

Andy will be doing another (free) on-line chat on MSN

Date : SEPTEMBER 4th.

Time will be :
1:00pm (Pacific)
4:00pm (Eastern)
9:00pm (GMT)

I'll have more details in the next few days (including the URL and/or IRC
channel).

The last chat was great fun and hopefully the next one will be a blast too.

Yes - this is part of a "repeat" of his "Rifff" show on MSN earlier this
year.

Stay tuned.

Well, something that I find quite interesting is that 'Rook' penned by AP,
has no Colin on it all (heresy!) while 'War Dance' (I think - alas, they
don't allow to keep my CD collection at work..), penned by Colin has Andy
playing some fairly insiginificant instrument (tambourine? kazoo?)

I'd agree that much of Nonsuch is lyrically very good. The two tracks
that I think are so un-Andy and so un-sublte in there blatant message are
(the aforementioned) 'Books are Burning' (complete with masterbatory and
pointless guitar solos!) and I'll add 'Peter Pumpkinhead' to that list.

I mean, really, the grand metaphor approach of something like 'Another
Satellite' or 'Human Alchemy' is totally thrown out the window with the
hit-you-over-the-head approach of 'Hmmm, let me write a not-so-thinly
veiled critique of Christianity (again) and right-wing, book-burning
politics." C'mon, give me a break!

All this time I've been trying to think of why XTC would name their own
new record label "IDEA", and suddenly it struck me -- check out these
lines from the cover of my all-time favorite album, "Go 2" (emphasis
mine):

"...Then we want you to BUY it. The *idea* being that the more of you
that buy this record the more money Virgin Records, the manager Ian
Reid and XTC themselves will make. To the aforementioned this is known
as PLEASURE."

Could this be mere coincidence? I don't think so.

I'd like to offer a big congratulations to Becki DiGregorio for her
wonderful performance at the CD release party last night in Santa Cruz!
Her songs were powerful, her voice soared, and she was joined by an
absolutely amazing cast of musicians.

It was also nice to see other ChalkMountaineers there - Dean Martucci,
Richard Pedretti-Allen, John Relph, Mitch Friedman. Now, if only we had
a Bay Area back-of-a-truck XTC gig at which to congregate...

Mr. Gregory apparently couldn't make it to Becki's gig, but his spirit
was effectively conjured when John Wedemeyer played the first part of
Dave's "Inside the Dream" solo note-for-note. That was a great moment
for me, as I think it's one of the best DG solos I've heard. Not that
it presented the least bit of a challenge to extreme guitar virtuoso
John.

Overall, a wonderful show. But I'm not too sure why Becki asked a Led
Zeppelin cover band to open up for her. <wink>

For those eleven hundred or so chalkies that weren't there, you missed a
great time last night. I mean of course the cd release party for becki
di gregorio's seven worthies . . .
    http://www.users.dircon.co.uk/~nonsuch/bdg.htm
I'm sure there will be more highly detailed accounts of the show, but
here's my short version:

The concert was a gas! If you enjoy John Wedemeyer's guitar playing on
the album, he seems to enjoy playing as much or more as we do listening.
His band warmed up and then becki came on to perform seven worthies in
its entirety. The turning point for me was (no, not he Led Zeppelin
medley) the performance of the song *supplication*, a very moving
tribute to her brother. From that point on the music and performers
reached another level, only serving to highlight the creativity and
originality of the material. Bravo becki, and thanks. Your cd will be
stuffing many stockings come Christmas.

It was a very pleasant surprise to meet the esteemed Mr. Relph while
*Senses Working Overtime* (only XTC content) played over the sound
system before the show. If not for the list, I very well may have missed
out on this experience altogether. Thanks to you as well.

And thanks to the geography gods for landing me in Santa Cruz, CA.

Regards,
                Andy K.

Dear Chalkspangers,

Is it next week yet? I have a proposal for the new QOTW. If it is
not next week yet then this can just be a question. I would have
posted this to the clever guy/gal who proposed the whole idea, but I
forget his/her name.

Which member of the band would you most like to meet, why and what
would you talk about?

I'd like to meet Dave Gregsy because he's the one we don't hear much
about. I'd like to ask what exactly he does, apart from playing
awesome guitar and piano and whether he minds playing third fiddle to
A and C.

An interesting idea, but I for one am on the lookout for *any* kind of good
music, not just music that sounds like XTC. I'd much rather have a site
where people talk about their favorite albums regardless of what they sound
like, and I'm not interested in having a music library full to the brim
with "quirky pop."
Just a thought. (And yes, I would like to help out, if I can recommend
John Zorn's "Naked City" along with "The Greatest Living Englishman.")

>Oh, but that song [The Somnambulist] is so much fun! Admittedly, it's a

Yeah, but I'm lazy, you see. I just want to throw the CD in and press
play, no mucking about.

Sugarhips Sherwood, you are indeed godlike in your splendor, but I must
differ -

>They showed these vidclips of chubby, bespectacled li'l Andy, a dead
>ringer for Franz Schubert

Nuh-uh! Andy is much taller, has much less hair, and he's not syphilitic
(as far as I know). . . and he's still alive, of course. But Schubert is
another one of my favorite musicians, so I suppose I shouldn't dwell on
such piddling differences.

>As long as the original jcards are more or less intact; i want every
>XTC tape that survived the 90's ! ;)

Well, for one thing, the insert card is *not* intact - I stepped on the
case three or four times (by accident, not out of rage at its brilliance)
and bits of broken plastic punctured the card. For another thing, as I
said, the sound quality is hideous - it's been left in the sun for too long
in my car - and finally, and most importantly, it's got mucho sentimental
value. I bought it in Boston when I was a mere sprat of 17 - I think it
was the third or fourth XTC album I ever bought - and I remember dancing
around my hotel room to "Burning With Optimism's Flames." Those were the
days. . .

>Oh Natalie: if Dave is going bald (SHOCK HORROR GASP!)
>doesn't that make him more attractive?
>After all, you have a website filled with baldness - or is that a
>contradiction ?

Well, Dave fans seem to find his hair attractive, so I thought they'd be
shocked. Being both an Andy Partridge fan *and* a Brian Eno fan, I am
immune to such trivialities. :)

> Sorry to see the QOTW and SOTW die so suddenly, they

Well, I wasn't going to admit it, but yes, I had the same thought going
through my head a few times while watching that performance. I only tuned
in to watch Lindsay Buckhingham (one of the world's most underrated
performers, I think -- his solo performance of "Big Love" that night was
_stunning_) as I never really cared for the whole Fleetwood Mac phenomenon,
but I have to admit that Mick can still beat the skins in time. Quite
admirably. And he looked SO happy to have a paying gig.

And incidentally, has anyone else here noticed how incredibly similar Martin
Newell's performance on "The Greatest Living Englishman" is to any one of
Colin's? "We'll Build A House" struck me thusly, especially. It could have
been dropped onto _Skylarking_ right in place of "Big Day" and I don't think
we would have known the difference. And why is Andy's name featured so
prominently on the cover if all he did was produce and play some
instrumentation (not to downplay the contribution, of course...)? Is this
Mr. Newell's worshipfulness or Andy's megalomania at work?

I wish I were talking about XTC on this page.
However,my "opinion" about mono Sgt. Pepper being they way it's supposed to
sound was actually a typo.
I meant it's supposed to sound good even if you have mononucleosis.
It was late and I wasn't typing very well/good.
Any way I grew up listening to the mono version (even when I had
mononucleosis) and I remember lots of bits that seem to have disappeared
from the stereo version.
At the time Pepper was recorded all stereo was basically binaural(look it
up kiddies).
(Ringo's drums for instance are not in stereo like they would be today.)
Radio was still mono and still AM.
Certainly they were trying to reach beyond that with Pepper.
In interviews with George Martin (a disney special on Pepper?) and Lennon,
the mono version was the one they spent the most time on.
Then they basically turned the pan knobs on the four mixdown channels to
the left, right or center.
Not really stereo as we know it today.
A nice effect none the less.
I suggest listening to a mono version and see all that is missing from the
stereo one.
I have "learned" these things from somewhere.I didn't make it up.
"It takes brains to do that anyway" jm
ps I am in the process of getting a copy of the mono version and would be
glad to share! peace bee-atch jm

Dear Chalkers,

Some of you were wondering when XTC recorded the Ray Davies / Kinks
classic Tired Of Waiting For You.

They did record this track, as XTC, during the 'CBS sessions' in
January 1977. CBS did not sign the band and it was never released of
course but it can be found on bootleg tapes.

I have a terrible n-th grade copy - anyone who would like a dub

Wow, my message today is almost completely on topic. Zounds.

>Off to college in two days. Yikes. It's weird not being the youngest
>Chalkhillian anymore.

Ben, you haven't been the youngest Chalkhillian for over a year.

>"The Green Man" - a new album must.

It needs a little work, though. It's got a good base but the way it's done
on the demo leaves something to be desired. I'd like to see it depend even
more heavily on the percussion...

>"Dame Fortune" - could work on the new album, but I get the
>impression that it's just rehashing the 'Nonesuch' scenario...

I like the song. The only song it really recaps is "Dear Madam Barnum,"
and since it does it so much better, both musically and lyrically (the sad
clown thing has been done to death) I think it's a keeper.

>"Church Of Women" - my fave off the tape... if this don't make it on the
>album, cancel my subscription.

Church of Women is great. The story behind the song is amusing, too -- in
an interview once, discussing the large number of songs he writes
glorifying women, he made a comment along the lines of "

>"River of Orchids" - in desperate need of that in-production XTCizing.

No way! This song is great as it is. "I had a dream where the car is
reduced to a fossil (Uuuhn!)" :) I really like the backing track on it.

>"You And The Clouds Will Still Be Beautiful" - another good album cut.

I've gushed before on how much I love this song, so I'll just be quiet
about it now...

>"Wonder Annual" - 'Skylarking' revisited - the title alone suggests it;
>let's move on...

Admittedly, it's a bit, uh, repetitive. But I really like the Garden of
Eden "snake" metaphor.

>"I'd Like That" - I like that

I'd put it on the album.

>"Knights In Shining Karma" - possibilities with liberal doses of classic
>XTCizing.

I think it works pretty well as it is. Rather, um, delicate, but
manageable.

>"Easter Theatre" - I'm missing something here...

Yeah -- a great song. Spring equals life equals sex. Two classic XTC
themes meet in the same song at last...

>"Prince Of Orange" - possibilities with liberal doses of classic
>XTCizing.

I don't think the band should even re-record this one -- the demo is
excellent as it is. I say just slap that on the "rock" album and call it a
day. Great song, even if Andy couldn't even figure out what it meant. :)

>"Some Lovely (My Brown Guitar)' - sounds a bit like Duke material to
>me... OK

I say lose this one. "We can play on my brown guitar"? Sheesh.

>"The Last Balloon" - what generation of all this could my tape possibly
>be?

If it's anything like mine, something like 20.

>Maybe with a lyrics sheet...

Check the Chalkhills Demo Lyrics file, where you'll find this song,
transcribed by yours truly.

>"Bumper Cars" - possibilities with liberal doses of classic XTCizing.

It's B-side material, probably, although it could fit with some of the
newer material...

>"I Can't Own Her" - hmmmmm...

This song is another definite must-have. Nice relationship-is-over song
with gorgeous music. The bridge sucks, unfortunately, but nothing's
perfect.

>"Your Dictionary" - possibilities with liberal doses of classic
>XTCizing.

Also B-side material.

>"Cherry" - not supposedly an "XTC" tune, but it could be put in the new
>album and you'd get no complaint from moi...
>"Candymine" - needs to be on the new one.

"Cherry" has already been released (under the XTC name, too) on the Carmen
Sandiego Soundtrack. Both "Cherry" and "Candymine" were demoed, not for
the new album, but for the ill-fated "bubblegum" project -- something
Mitch can explain in far more detail than I. Anyway, I don't know if I
could forgive Andy for putting Candymine on the album -- I mean, innuendo
is a fine thing, but jeez.

>"Playground" - could be an XTC staple

I only wish I had more than that two minute snippet to judge the song
by... nice, though.

JHB, climb the latter
JHB, will die :)

Yes and no.It does affect thedirection, BUT... the main factor is any
slight misshapings of the plughole, the direction in which the plug is
pulled, whether the water is completely still beforehand, and all sorts of
other similar factors... so the probability is slightly different in each
hemisphere, but you cannot guarantee a direction of spin. Erm... this is

I believe that The Beatles together with George Martin and Geoff
Emerick spent days doing the Mono mix which at that time was still the
popular format. After they finished that, Beatles left the mixing of
the stereo version to George and Geoff which they did in a few hours!
I remember an interview - possibly with George Martin - saying that
the mono mix was the classic Beatles mix as they intended.

As a result of moving departments (again) I've been assigned a
new PC at work (wonders never cease). This CPU has a sound
card, so I spent my lunch cruising through the WAV files on
the site. Thanks again to sitemeister John for the new and neat
stuff. Andy's voice clips are priceless, and after hearing the
Dukes' snippets, I'll have to redouble my effort to find them. I
literally have never seen any of them in a store.

Also, thanks to this new "business casual" schtick, I'm able to
wear my Chalkhills tee to work. Almost makes up for the
Dilbertian atmosphere here. However, after spending time on this
list, I was taken a bit aback when three people asked "what's
that on the back of your shirt" and "who is XTC"? ;-)
I've gently showcased their range by mentioning songs they may
know, including "Making Plans for Nigel", "Dear God", and "Mayor
of Simpleton", hinting that there was much more neat and varied
stuff where that came from.

>[Mark Strijbos] In my post on the Black Sea title thing I
>completely forgot the bit about Andy wanting to call it "Work
>Under Pressure" - and that explains the diving gear.

I shoulda suspected a reason like that, given Andy's imagination.
and the description of BS in the little booklet that came with
Nonsuch ("commando, troubleshooting unit, ready to go...songs
written on the hoof, rehearsed in dressing rooms and slammed
down"). Didn't Black Sea predate the Queen/Bowie single (and
commercial success) "Under Pressure"? That's another "coincidence"
for the books, alongside Mummer/Murmur and Wonderland/Wonderland.
Our conspiracy theorists will be chewing on this for weeks.

>[Mark again] "Colin has once said that ES was a bit of a
>personal embarrassment; he had just bought a new fretless bass."

I should embarrass myself like that sometime.

Anyone else catch the long article on Tom Lehrer in yesterday's
(8/24) Boston Globe? He's teaching in Santa Cruz; when asked
about his relative inactivity for so long, he said (near
verbatim quote from memory) "Perhaps if I played my cards right,
I could have ended up writing songs for movies such as 'Toy
Story' or 'James and the Giant Peach'".

Louder than rattling swords,

Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls,. the prodigal daughter has returned!
So I'll give you a SHORT lowdown on what happened to me over the summer, as
I have to get to class in a few minutes:
Got a job, heard XTC played numerous times on the muzak, as I'm sure my
buddy Matt Smith has relayed to you, fell in love with a manager of mine who
listens to XTC, got a phone call from a good online Chalkhills pal (should I
say your name, Matt Kaden?????), bought the Upsy Daisy Assortment, got my
first issue of the Little Express, obsessed over Dave Gregory, watched my
XTC tapes, obsessed over Dave Gregory, etc., etc.
And now, with a flourish. I must depart. I have yet to actually read all the
Chalkhills sent out over the summer.

Ciao,
Amanda

going to get in return....you're a real man, aren't you?

*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*
*-* XTsCheme Vol. 1 *-*
*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*

I've just finished a completely self-installing XTC Windows 95 Desktop
Theme, Scheme, or whatever you want to call it, and you can download it
freely off the web at:

http://www.alternatech.net/jh3/xtc/xtscheme.htm

(I'm going to try to put up a mirror site for it as well in the next
week or so.)

I started on this project almost two years ago, and I'd still be
fiddling with it, but recent postings on this subject finally convinced
me to get off my butt and finish it.

I just figure if Dead-Heads can have this stuff, why not us?

Anyway, once you download XTsCheme.exe and run it, it will install a
complete .WAV sound scheme, several nice wallpaper files, a library of
28 XTC icons, and a multi-mode screen saver (sorry, no animation, but
once you see it you'll probably agree that animation would be overkill,
and besides, it plays MIDI files, which is better). The total size of
the installer .EXE is 517K. The installer can also optionally register
everything for you (thus altering your desktop) automatically.

This is NOT a Microsoft[TM] Plus!(R) Desktop Theme, so Microsoft[TM]
Plus!(R) is not required. For more details and previews, please read
the aforementioned web page. If you're still using Windows 3.1 you can
still download a lot of the stuff as separate files. (Sorry, not the
screen saver.)

Basically the idea behind this project is simply to promote XTC and
give me (and anyone else who's interested) something constructive to do
while waiting for the next album. All I ask is that you please do not
attempt to sell or re-sell the package or anything in it. And, of
course, you install this stuff at your own risk and I take no
responsibility for any damage done to your system, blah blah blah.

So, never again must you sit in front of a boring Win95 computer screen
that fails to constantly remind you of the greatest band of all time.
And if the reaction to this first volume is favorable, expect more of
the same. Please let me know what you think!

Got your attention, good!
Now onto the mundanity.....

I wish I could somehow be involved with the tribute tapes. Would anyone be
able to deal with XTC a capella????????

Well.....as far as how Dave looks on the Upsy Daisy cover....not bad, I must
admit. Usually facial hair just doesn't do it for me, but it looks nice.

And with regards to the latest LE, I cracked up laughing at the whimsical
drawing on the inside back cover.

One more word before I depart to go to work.....

Ciao for now,

It was a slip of the keystroke that led me to make a crucial omission in
what I intended to say. Here is exactly what I had intended:

As much as I believe "Your Dictionary" to be one of the greatest songs AP
has written, I see it as being a little too...personal (or vindictive or
even libelous) to record. It's one thing to take poetic license, but this is
point blank stuff.

Hello!

Mr. Relph asked where did the glitchy sound happen in Generals and
Majors. It occurs, according to my clock on the CD player, about
1:24. One idea that was given was that maybe it was the editing
job that was done. Every CD that I have with that song on it, has
that glitch on it.

Mr. Mitch was able to give us an answer to who did the HOOing in
Ladybird, does anyone have an idea on who did the WOO! in Rocket from
a Bottle( I'm sure I got the title wrong but it's early morning and I
don't carry my CD's to the comp lab, so shoot me!) off of Black Sea?
It sounds female to me?

Anyone.....Anyone....Bueller?

living in endless perplexion (huh?) due to the last Chalkhills,
Cheryl

I agree, now, that Colin would be better at Gabriel era Genesis than
Andy. Andy would be better at solo Gabriel offerings, like "Mercy
Street". Maybe. Maybe.

How would Andy feel about doing a duet with Kate Bush?

I would also like to see Colin tackle "Big Time", (just for a laugh,
mind). Colin doing disco. "Big Time" isn't really disco, is it, but
you can bloody well boogie to it. And I have. And I'm not ashamed,
either. I want a video, too. Colin on his own, singing "Big Time" in a
big spangly suit. With platform heels. Oh no - that's "Steam" isn't
it? I'm getting my Gabriel's in a twist here. Or in a wad, depending
on which side of the Atlantic you are.

If the Great Archdrude were to cover an entire album, I'd give him
Skylarking, although he might take Sacrificial Bonfire a bit too far,
him being a bit of a pagan, bless his heart. And I'd give XTC either
Peggy Suicide or Fried.

So there.
