Please don't make the same mistake. I can't cash it. It also did not contain an address label but now I can use the old check as the mailing label! I have received fourteen orders so far. There were others with problems. The next offense was a note that said "Address on check." Duh. Such a quandary... should I cash the check or should I use it as a mailing label? Another offense was no email address. If I run into a snag, I will simply mail your check back with no tape. If I have an email address I can hopefully correct any problem situation before tapes run out. I guess you just want to get me back for not including my Zip Code in my original posting... though several resourceful individuals did call the post office, got the info and mailed their orders. On the upside, one individual sent an additional three dollars just to say thanks, buy a pint for Andy AND Colin or help to offset any cost overruns. Another individual has promised to send his band's new CD. All I can say is "THANK YOU." These kind gestures will redeem this project for me and coax me do another. Please don't feel obligated to send anything extra (and it's going to take A LOT more than that to get my CD!). If you do, cool, but don't feel that you must. Cheers, Richard

But in this case I am surely sure that Microsoft is not trying to take over the free world by making us all get involved with the Microsoft Network in order to see Andy. Believe me, if they were, they'd be doing this with someone slightly more commercial like Michael Stipe or Elton John, and there would be millions more upset people that couldn't get on with their non-Win95 computers. I would LOVE to get a copy of the transcript, and if the sound clips are to be archived on a website I would die to hear them. I cannot access the MSN, so be it. But if at some point I could download wav files of what Andy is presenting on line I would give my right arm. Well, maybe not the whole arm... Second, a real live xtc convention will take place very, very far from home that I cannot attend. On a happier note, its a treat to read some great posts recently on the list. There is a "real sense of community" <group hug> ;) Hmmm, here's an idea, since Las Vegas plays host to many a convention, s'pose an xtc convention were to happen in Las Vegas. Any interest? Part of the program would be visiting the, wait for it, (Dukes of) Stratosphere Tower. (Sorry, this is the only place where I can make that reference with any hope of people getting it). In lieu of a "formal" convention, I am more than happy to get together with fellow chalkhillians who may visit Las Vegas. (Tour guide cap included) A people watching treat that that can't be missed! While my wife was suffering from the flu (better now, thanks) I asked her if I could get her anything, she muttered from bed, "No, I'm only making plans for NyQuil." I've heard the boots for years, and now the "Anthology" stuff. As far as the "White Album" was concerned, I had always heard that it was John that didn't show up for the George sessions, excepting "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" as a special guest was present. I get irritated equally when people give GM too little credit as they often give too much. I know that much of the album is sparse and devoid of the usual GM flourishes, but the work that he did do, (e.g. "Good Night") was of the highest quality. Yeah, they were freaking out during that period, Ringo quitting, John busy exposing himself and his Yoko, Paul thinking that he's the manager in the aftermath of Brian Epstein's death, and George completely out of patience with Paul's incessant unwelcome suggestions for his guitar parts. Or so the legend goes. But no matter. The album's reputation was earned honestly. It is remains a classic. I can't understand any criticism of "Abbey Road", less it be Ringo's vocal contribution to "Octopus's Garden". It seems fitting that he was granted the honor of singing the "Underwater Songs" . Dissect it any way you like, point out that the flawless medleys are constructed from unfinished song fragments, but the fact remains that it is a masterpiece that set the standard. James Isaacs quipped: >Please, Stormy Monday, stay away from any bridges... >I have read that Paul McCarnety's new album, tentatively titled "Flaming >Pie", is due out in May, is being produced by Jeff Lynne, and features a >duet with Steve Miller. Sounds like more fun than sucking M&M's out of a >badger. I really did laugh out loud. I knew that Jeff Lynne was producing Paul's next effort, (Just what we needed. I can't imagine Mr. ELO bringing out anything but the absolute worst from Paul!), but you must be kidding about the duet with Steve Miller. Maybe Jeff will talk the Beatles into a reunion with Steve Miller filling in for John! Then on tour, he could sing "Dear Prudence" followed up by "Big Old Jet Airliner"! "Flaming Pie", huh? Why not call it, "I'm So Bloody Desperate"! I love Paul's music. I wish that he would sit down with Elvis, Andy, Ray Davies, Peter Gabriel, Eric Clapton, and Steve Winwood and write some good songs. Then get Todd to produce an album with all of his esteemed guests. Imagine trying to fit all of those egos onto a tiny CD. With wishes like that, is there any wonder that I'm warned away from the bridges? As far as Ray Davies goes, my opinion remains solid: While the Kinks are good and Ray Davies is a fine songwriter, and while Andy gushes over "the best song of the century" as penned by Ray, I maintain that XTC as a band, and Andy Partridge as a songwriter are superior to the Kinks in all possible categories. Would you not expect this from someone that reads and contributes to Chalkhills? I know that I unfairly placed Billy Joel on my mythical album with Steve Miller, Bob Seger and John Mellancamp, but I've never completely forgiven him for polluting the airwaves with "It's Still Rock and Roll To Me". I'm on the road this week, with no access to XTC. But I've been thinking about "Beating Of Hearts". Stormy Monday

A case could be made that the White album was only what it was because of his guidance through their developing years. The Beatles had immense talent, but Martin was one of their most important teachers in the craft, and it's no surprise that by the time of the White album they were using his techniques with less help from the master. It was great but a few weeks earlier I saw XTC on The Old Grey Whistle Test and I recall Andy playing in a suitably torn T-shirt and playing some pretty manic guitar (just about salivating at the mouth!) so when they came out here (circa Black Sea that time) they appeared very conservative and kind of non-communicative and nervous. SMX Sorry if this is a detour off topic, but I find it quite an interesting point. I see it from the opposite way round. My experience of North America is that once you're outside the city centres you're stumped unless you have a car. It's not only that public transport systems are not great, it's also that the scale of the place is not very human. There's a lot of space and the architecture has expanded to fill it. Try walking it, and you're quickly exhausted. Britain is just a lot more compact. True, there are big areas of countryside, and if you wanted to lead a rural life you could feel isolated without a car. But for city and town dwellers, and a lot of suburbanites, it's pretty easy to get around on foot and public transport. I live in a city centre, and though I can drive and occasionally hire a car, I can only think that owning a car would be a big expense and inconvenience (not to mention an eye-sore and a polutant). Perhaps for these reasons, Britain has never had that North American culture that stipulates that anyone-who's-anyone gets a car for their 16th birthday. Having said that, Britain like the rest of the Western world is stupidly obsessed with the car, appearing to see it as a liberation instead of the prison it generally is. I'm not too sure why, but a lot of artists and arty-types never learn to drive in Britain (I didn't myself until I was 23, and then only because it was handy for the job I was doing at the time). Andy Partridge is not such an exception. Maybe it's something to do with an avoidance of adulthood, of not wanting to act like the grown-ups. Or maybe if the choice is between forking out for driving lessons and putting a weekly downpayment on that shiny red guitar, the choice is made for you. - Mark http://easyweb.easynet.co.uk/~fisher/

We do agree on Mummer which I have thought seriously good. I could never understand Chris Towmey's (?) objections to it in his book . Anyway, the 'cast away on a desert island' song sounds an ideal anthem for the Referendum party in the forthcoming election. Mummer is one of the triptych with black sea and O&L. Seems to me that's what Virgin and Geffen records have been doing for years. And say what you will about the company, but without the efforts of Virgin or another record company very much like them, you and me wouldn't be listening to Andy's music today. If the folks at MSN believe bringing Andy Partridge online is a good way to court new customers, well, then I say that makes them pretty much the smartest online service around. I haven't seen America Online signing deals with my favorite musical artists lately. Message-id: <01IH5AD7MKCE8XLQ7B@jazz.ucc.uno.edu> I'm back, after my weeklong Easter vacation spent visiting my old high school and talking to the English teacher I lusted after whilst I was there...... Yes, in Chalkhills and CHildren there is mention of Andy and his girlfriend of three years becoming involved in a little triangle with a guy that liked Andy, said guy was liked by Andy's girlfriend. It does say they all climbed into bed one evening, although Andy remarked it was an idiotic move and the whole thing crumbled soon thereafter. There is also mention that while was working for a newpaper, magazine, I can't recall, the movie critic was highly flamboyant and openly gay, and whenever a new movie came along and he didn't have someone to go with, he'd ask Andy. In exchange for the free movie ticket and as much popcorn as he could stomach, Andy would let this guy rest his hand on his knee. And now a few responses...... Bob-MMMM, watermelon jello shot, I can taste it now.....BTW, it's pronounced N'awlins by us Yats from the Big Easy. Bourbon Street is not my favorite hangout. (I prefer to walk where I don't have to check every two minutes to see if my purse is still hanging on my shoulder.) And I don't reall seeing that toy soldier place. (Mind you, I've only been to BS a few times.) Roger-(Blush blush) Why thank you ever so much. Last time I checked, Mike Foster was the governor of Louisiana. (And also holds the higest approval rating of any governor in the US right now.) And as far as the endless blather, part of being on Chalkhills includes hearing stuff that has nothing to do with the band. But, as far as I'm concerned, the whole six degrees thing works well with what I post. Observe..... DAVID DUCHOVNY-Someone on a David Duchovny list said they like XTC. I posted this news to the XTC list. CRASH TEST DUMMIES-No explanation necessary for that one. WOW! I didn't expect to get all the mail I've been getting regarding my list of stuff for trade! I must state this, though. I swear in the names of Brad Roberts and Dave Gregory that I will tape everything that everyone has asked me for, HOWEVER, it might take some time. Money is very lean in my family right now, so it'll take awhile to but tapes. I must state again that I cannot dub video, however. (Umm hello, I mean BUY tapes, not BUT them!) But I'll get back to everyone as soon as I compile a complete list of what needs to be taped and who sent me what and all that good stuff. XTC SIGHTINGS..... On another M2 preview, I believe this was on Thursday, (How's this for irony?) A Ben Folds Five video was played. (Can't recall the title, but it begins with piano and two guys going DOOO DOOO DOOO DO DO DO) and right after that, the video for Senses Working Overtime was played! In church on Sunday, I swear to Gregsy, the pianist was playing Rook. Adios mi amigos, Amanda XTC song of the day-Easter Theatre non-XTC song of the day: Androgynous-Paul Westerberg & CTD

Message-id: <01IH5BWDXG128XLQ7B@jazz.ucc.uno.edu> I know there are plenty of Canadian XTC'ers on this list, so listen up! If any of you have anything REMOTELY Crash Test Dummies that you'd be willing to trade for my stuff, let me know please! I have a lot of CTD stuff, but I know there's probably a lot I don't have. (Although we can get MuchMusic down here, enough people have to call our cable company for them to add it into the lineup!) Thanks and later, Amanda (And for some more new French I'm just learning) Voulez vou coucher avec moi? (Anyone answers "oui", I will scream) Je me souviens du soleil

Message-id: <01IH6QC0ZXNM8XKMRB@jazz.ucc.uno.edu> I've been trying to keep my posts down to one per digest, but I had to post this while it was still fresh in my mind........because this really spooked me. Last night I had a nightmare. (Yes, 19-year olds do still have nightmares, except we don't wake mommy up to tell her abou it.) XTC was in it, or rather, was NOT in it. That's the whole point. Anyways, I can't recall exactly what the dream began as, but I remember waking up and seeing my parents sitting around the table whispering. The strange thing was my brothers were up too, and they sleep in on a daily basis. I distinctly heard my dad say "Don't let her read the paper". Then they heard me come in and tried to hide the morning paper from me. I must have my paper, so I tried to grab it from my dad. He kept holding it back and saying "I don't want you to begin the day like this. It's best you not see it." By that time I was ticked, so I just ripped it out of his hands. On the front page was the headline MOTOR ACCIDENT LEAVES TWO DEAD, ONE SERIOUSLY INJURED This overwhelming sense of dread came over me as I read on....."A car crash early this morning has left two passengers dead, the driver in critical condition." As I went on to read, it said that Andy had gotten pissed out of his mind, along with Dave and Colin, (although those words were not the ones used), Andy stole a car, not knowing how to drive, and hit a building. He was the one who had managed to escape death. I remember falling in a sobbing heap on the floor, crying "He killed them. He killed them". I woke up crying this morning. My face was buried in my pillow and I was really upset. I couldn't eat or anything this morning. I don't know what it is...just the thought of anything like that happening scares me. My mom kept remarking that I looked pale. I just told her I had a bad dream and left it at that. I can't remember the last time a dream upset me so much. So how's everyone else's day been going? Sweet dreams, Amanda Je me souviens du soleil

Ah, I'm back (from the hospital, where I just had my appendix out...) and I find two Chalkhills waiting for me. After the relative drought of late, this seems promising. Even more promising would be news of a contract... :) >REM are a cut above the average million selling rock bands of this era. >But they do not, and should not command the same respect that XTC >receives from anyone who is more than casually familiar with both of >their collective recorded outputs. Hmmm. Interesting. Certainly R.E.M. has been far more influential in crafting rock music this past decade. Surely _Murmur_ was far more innovative (in broad terms) than any one individual XTC album. IMHO, they're just two bands who are lucky enough to be made up of excellent musicians and very talented lyricists. R.E.M. just has a regular drummer, is all. :) >Mummer is such a fine example of the high art that is exclusively XTC, >and I am often amazed at some of the lukewarm to negative comments that >this perfect album (in its original form, that is) receives from people >that consider themselves serious fans of these fine musicians. Unfortunately, I have to rank Mummer second-last. It has good moments; Beating of Hearts and LoaFW definitely qualify. But it really falls short as a whole. Wonderland's bop-bass and cheesy nature effects do nothing to back up a rather half-hearted commentary from Colin. The good bits (like the bridge) in Human Alchemy even out with the bad bits, like the moaning. Ladybird is a good song where the production on the vocal really hurts it for me. Really, the album as a whole just seems lacking to me; there's not a single song I would consider a standout, and in the process of passing through three sets of hands the production was really mangled. Just my opinion, of course... hey, I love Nonsuch, so what do I know? >The fact that even the B-sides are good (and that includes >"Frost Circus" and "Procession Through Learning Land") shows that Andy, at >least, was touched by some sort of righteous angel during that period. Actually, XTC has tended to have pretty good B-sides, overall. The Black Sea B-sides, for example, are excellent additions to the CD, as are the TBE B-sides. And one has only to glance at R&BB to unearth such gems as Blame the Weather, Angry Young Men, and HIPWBG. Even now, where we get demos instead of honest to goodness studio B-sides, we still get great tracks like Always Winter, Never Christmas. >the Go 2 sweater you knitted etc etc Actually, an Are You Recieving Me? sweater would be damn cool. And pretty easy to make, as sweater patterns go, I guess. Anyone want to get production started? :) On a final note -- that four cassette rarity extravaganza I've been promising y'all for, well, too long now is still coming along. However, I'm still missing a full copy of "Paper Snow" and the person who promised to dub the Waxworks mix of "Wait Till Your Boat Goes Down" hasn't returned my last e-mail. So, please, help a fellow Man of the Chalk. If you can find it in your heart to help me get copies of one or both of these songs (and this time I really am sure that there aren't any others... :) please e-mail me. Once I get them, notification of the tape's release should be forthcoming soon. Thanks!
