Hello all. Long time no see.....

Mark lists:

>I Drew a Lemon
>Moon on your Dress
>Blue in Paradise
>Paper Snow
>Cherry in your Tree
>In Hell's Despite
>Am I the Kinda Girl?
>You are Here
>Paperchase
>New York Inside My Head

And then asks:

>Anyone care to guess about the degree to which these songs are genuine
>collaborations? It sounds to me like most of them are Andy's songs, with
>someone else trying to claim the credit.

Guess this is as good an opening as I'm ever going to get to bring up Cathy
Dennis here....;-)

"Am I The Kinda Girl?" still amazes me. As the title track to her
strongest album, if figures prominently in defining that albums' tone - yet
it also screams *Andy*. Like Mark, I really would like to know if that
song was created in an environment of mutual contribution; because it
definitely succeeds in communicating something for/from both parties. If
Andy wrote the entire thing, he channeled Ms. Dennis perfectly.

Cathy Dennis: the Spice Girl for a more mature pallet.......

Here's hoping everyone is fine and dandy. BTW: are there any Japanese
Chalkhillians out there anymore? If so, please write directly to me, off
the list - I'd love to hear any reports on the Puffy tour and who is in
their band this time out. Sorry, about the slight diverge there folks, but
Puffy info is precious (though not exactly pale)...;-)

Without asking for specifics you don't have, Mitch, how about some
general info:

Is this release different from the proposed release of the BBC material?

What's the planned mix of live material/rarities/familiar stuff?

When's the approximate plan for releasing this?

Am I the last one to know?

well, IMHO "commercial success" does not equal "good enough"

from what I've learned about that cesspool of an industry we know and loath
as the "musik bidness"
I reckon we can be damn sure that no matter how brilliant the new album is
going to be (and from what little I have heard it is going to be truly
fantastic) it won't matter one little bit.
It's much easier to make a dollar from a young, poorly represented, energy
to burn, videos to make type young band that will realise in 20 some years
that they've been ripped off...

no , you don't sound defeatist....just like the rest of us you want
the album and you want it NOW dammit.

Huh ? Windows98 is on course - in fact I could have bought a copy last

Dear Chalkers,

It pains me to read comments like
>What is your personal reaction toward the
>apparent blasphemies of "Dear God"?

To think that Andy Partridge is blaspheming God
in his lyrics is to completely miss the point of the
song. Patridge's lamentations about the state of
our world, all of which are perfectly valid, are framed
in a letter to God. The fact that he has written a
letter to God demonstrates a willingness to believe
that God is possible.  He's not singing to a non-entity;
he is singing to the possibility of a very real God.

But Partridge, like any "thinking" man, has difficulty
reconciling the traditional image of an all-loving God
with someone who would allow the kind of pain and
misery that are so abundant on this earth. It is with
heart-felt poignancy that Partridge points out this paradox.

My interpretation of the lyrics is that Partridge does
indeed believe in the possibility of God and desperately
wishes that He would listen to the pleas contained in
the song and change a few things around here.

I suspect most Chalkers figured this out long ago.
My suggestion is that when you hear that someone
has misinterpreted the song, please explain it to them.

Subject: Does "Dear God" offend?

Hi All,

Misty asked about the feelings on "Dear God" among the theists in the group.
Let's see if I can keep this reasonably short while still saying everything
this great question deserves.

Personally, I love the song, and I have a strong, growing, and most
excellent relationship with the big G. I came to the song when I was already
an xtc fan, and it arrived in the height of my atheist period (not claiming
any required order of faith or non-faith here, just the way I've lived). Now
that I am a man of God, I still love the song, because it puts forth good,
tough questions that must be answered in order clear the way for a better
view of the true nature of God. The truth never shys away from the tough
questions, and Andy articulated/articulates many of my thoughts and feelings
exactly. For a long time the song was the summation of my atheist beliefs,
and now for me it's a testament to the power of passion, justice, and the
call for truth. I still sing it at the top of my lungs with full passion to
this day, loving God AND the song every second, and expanding my experience,
vision and understanding, staring those tough questions in the face and
seeing the answers more clearly with each listen (won't go into detail on
those answers here-- if you want to discuss any aspect of the song/lyrics,
feel free to email me privately, unless this turns into a beautifully
snowballing list topic).

Sound like a paradox to Misty or others? Has anyone here read "Conversations
With God" by Neale Donald Walsch yet? It's a three book series (Book 3
coming out in September) that many here would find intriguing and/or
incredible (both theists and atheists alike), written by a guy who has had
(if the book title was a little murky ;) ) in-depth conversations with
God. Book 1 is a good place to start, these books have blown my mind a
number of times already. I'm wondering if Andy has heard about these yet
(not sure how much the books have been distributed in the UK), I think he
would be intrigued, as I think would more than a few xtc fans here (so see,
THIS IS xtc related! :) ). If someone here on the lists is in contact with
Andy, can they mention these to him, he might thoroughly enjoy them. I see
lots of similarities between Andy's most excellent perspective and the
books. Books 1 and 2 have been dancing (not burning, although some would
like them to) about the top 20 non-fiction in the U.S. for at least over a
year now (alright cheeky skeptics, get yer laughs out now over the
"non-fiction" bit -- hey, I was an atheist, I can spot those easy setups).

Anyway, if you're looking to read a book that is as challenging and fearless
and full of love as "Dear God" (or "The Loving," or "Peter Pumpkinhead" or
"Wrapped in Grey", or "Paper & Iron" or "Senses" etc.), check out book 1
(then book 2) of the Conversations With God series (just to clarify, these
are not atheist books, and yes, it really is God talking. Sound impossible,
blasphemus, ridiculous? Go to your bookstore, open up Book 1 to any page,
read ten pages, and see if something in there doesn't make you go, "woah,
THAT is cool/interesting/thought-provoking/mind-blowing/sensible/logical/
beautiful!").

Happy all-out listening to "Dear God" and all the rest, and enjoy the books.
Best, Will

Hollyweird just last week. They had flown out from Nashville courtesy
of BMG. I was able to check them out and am happy to report that I was
*very* glad I did. Their stuff is extremely tight, upbeat, and squarely in

enjoy their time onstage. If you ever get a chance to see them, by all
means check 'em out. I think you'll agree it's good stuff.

Dear Chalkers,

Last issue Misty Shock asked:

Could you point them out please?

As far as i know blasphemy is to speak in an "impious or irreverent
manner of God or sacred things". And i don't think Andy is
actually doing that. He tells us of his doubts and his anger but he
is not irreverent to God! Andy's question (how can God exist in a
world torn apart by hate and violence) has been asked before, by
major theologians from all religions and churches around the world.
To call that blasphemy is really stretching the truth a bit IMHO.

Andy says he doesn't and won't believe in God. That's not
blasphemy, that's his personal belief. You probably don't believe in
Shiva or Buddha but they are sacred to somebody else. And if you're a
protestant you don't believe in saints and that makes you a sinner in
the catholic church.

Degrading or ridiculing another man's beliefs, that's blasphemy.
I mean, if God exists we are _all_ his children, right?

Love her? I'd give her the world _and_ my Science Friction single !

I once "dated" a girl who liked the Dukes (without knowing their true

Dom mentioned;
>Hanging me with my own socks, eh?<

This ain't got nothin' to do with nothin', but this line reminds me of a
rather 'funny' little incident that occured to me when I was a kid. A
neighborhood bully had (I don't recall how) gotten hold of my shoes and
tossed them over the chain-link fence into a neighbors yard (you know,
one of those yards you were scared to go into?). Well, I climbed over
the fence in my stocking feet to retreive them, and on the way back
over, in my haste, I leaped from the top of the fence, where I managed
to hook the toes of both my socks onto the little X's that line the top
of the fence, and over and face-down I went, hanging by my stretched
socks, trapped. Try to imagine how you would have gotten yourself
extricated.
Yeah, it's about as funny as it seems, except not then.
Fortunately my Dad heard my cries for help, and came outside to rescue
me, much to his amusement.

And (with apologies to Molly) but Squeeze can't hold a candle to XTC,

Hey folks...
Two things, one critical, one hopefully helpful (to round up more
fans that is..)
Firstly, when I've tried to enhance a friendship or what have you and
open someone up to XTC, I usually find something not too middle of the
road. I know that region is probably not considered by some of you as
well-trodden by our heroes, but it is...definitely. Rather than try to
plug into the lowest common dnominator, I always prefer to set them
spinning like a top...flying off the table...wonked silly if you will.
My usual top "sample" tracks from XTC include stuff like
"Jason And the Argonauts"
 "Instant Tunes,"
"Battery Brides",
"Millions,"
"The Garden of Earthly Delights",
"Extrovert",
and "Beatown."
I don't pick them because they exemplify XTC's essense of anything, just
because they catch you...and once caught, you ask for more.

Secondly...again...political rhetoric should occur within in the
confines of personal e-mails...not on the discussion board of a rock
band! All the addresses are listed for God's sake...it isn't that hard
to do...! Why should I have to scroll for the sake of a discussion that
should happen elsewhere? I read Chalkhills to see what's cooking with
the band and it's fans...not to be bombarded with POLITICS...as if we
all aren't already!

Finally... Dom and Harrison, shake hands, and lets talk about something
pleasent...like XTC!

guaranteed to raise a few eyebrows, not to mention turn a few stomachs.

My Top 10 Turnoffs (Actually, I could only think of six, but here they are

     6. Funky Pop a Roll
     5. Science Friction
     4. Big Day
     3. Ball And Chain
     2. Snowman
And my all-time least-favourite XTC track :
     1. Sgt Rock (Is Going To Help Me)
Heh heh - had enough yet?
My Top 10 Turnons :
     10. Senses Working Overtime
     9. Generals & Majors (okay, they were both a bit obvious)
     8. Garden of Earthly Delights
     7. When You're Near Me I Have Difficulty
     6. Another Satellite
     5. Poor Skeleton Steps Out
     4. Great Fire
     3. Statue of Liberty
     2. Towers of London
And the number-one all-time really-super-bitchin' XTC track (IMHO, at any
rate) :
     1. Earn Enough For Us
(That should hold 'em for a while)

Why is this sad? How is this any different than the numerous people
spouting their atheist propaganda? I mean he was answering a question

of Robyn as guest VJ on MTV introducing the Mayor of Simpleton video as
being by "The redoubtable Andy Partridge" (I was sure chuffed!). But he
did not have nice things to say about Elvis Costello's "tendency to
overwrite" songs. Seems my songwriting heroes don't necessarily hold
each other in as high esteem as I do.

I did have a fantasy in the late 80's of the Dukes touring with the
Egyptians - a post psychedelic juggernaut that never was.

Of recent Hitchcock I must confess I can't stand the albums - give me
Underwater Moonlight or I Often Dream of Trains any day - but his live
solo shows of late have been stunning. The guy is in command of his
brain and guitar like no other -you never know what's coming but it's
always completely unlike what anyone else would think of doing.

Speaking of nothing, here's a bit of self-promotional spam for you
tinned meat fans-
I've got a box of unsold CD's by my old band The Jennifers - packed with
songs heavily influenced by the above mentioned artistes - which are
doing nobody any good gathering dust under the bed.

If yer interested, email me and we'll make a DEAL Baby!

Love y'all , especially Dom-
you're on the right track man, absolutism is out of fashion in this
shilly shallying world of aesthetic relativism: "Whatever you like is
OK. I'm OK, You're OK". F*ck that. Webber sucks. There are too many
waffle headed Neville Chamberlains out there. Let's stand up for the
good people of Czeckoslovakia this time eh?

Wuv,
John
Song for the Day-...oh, whatever you like is fine. Achey Breaky Heart?
Sure. Whatever.

Sleepers,

There are a couple XTC songs that speak of waking, sleeping, dreaming, not
enough to challenge the quantity of reoccurring fire/firework metaphors in
the XTC cannon. But I like to think a major thrust of XTC's music is trying
to wake us up lyrically or musically to a vantage point perpendicular to the
sleepy mainstream.

Oh dear, the 80's are coming back and I've no hair left to spike...

There's an etching by the spanish artist Francisco Goya (1746-1828)that when
viewed for the first time startles the viewer like a single frame horror
movie. It's called "The Sleep of Reason Produces Monsters", the picture
contains an artist asleep at his drafting board with owls and bats
propagating from his subconsciousness. You can take a look see:
http://www.ima-art.org/ima/collections/prints_feature.html

This image will now percolate from your head every time you hear:

Collideascope:
Wakey Wakey Wakey
Little Sleeper
If you doze much longer
Then life turns to dreaming
Wakey Wakey Wakey
Little Sleeper
If you doze much longer
Then dreams turn to nightmares

and

Wrapped in Grey:
Just think how the old masters felt, they call...
Awaken you dreamers
Asleep at your desks
Parrots and lemurs
Populate your unconscious grotesques

Maybe Andy's seen it before...Hey look birds are building nests in my
armpits...

On Mummer: Mummer to me is a sketchbook of ideas. One that's a little
unrefined and not at all consumable to the masses (save for Funkpopparoll).
It's introspective and *was* very different from XTC's work to date. I think
some of the songs as being ancestors of future ones as: Beating of Hearts =
Garden of Earthly Delights, Me and the Wind = Dear Madam Barnum & Summer's
Cauldron , Love on a Farmboys Wages = Mayor of Simpleton, Ladybird = My Bird
Performs.
Maybe it's just me. Shoo shoo... Oh dear...

This reminded that 1000 Umbrella's also contains an unspoken "Fuck":
So with a mop and a bucket
I'll just say (FFFFFuck IT)

...and what's that curling 'round the door of the Great Fire.

That is a still from a lipsynced performance of Ball and Chain on (I think)
Top of the Pops or Old Grey whistle test. See also:
http://reality.sgi.com/chalkhills/video/Heritage97.jpg frame #4
Colin pretended to play it during the Da-doo-doo-doo bridge. I don't know if
he can really play a horn.

brian sellers axed:
>Just a question for anyone who knows:
>What is the relationship [or lack thereof] between Andy and Robyn
>Hitchcock?

This swiped from the Bungalow Rifff transcripts:
XTCColouringBook says: Andy, I recently discovered the wacky world of Robyn
Hitchcock, which is filled with smiley songs. Have you an opinion of Robyn?

Andy: Ummmmm.....Not really. Prefer Robin Hood

Hey we have two chalkies meeting up at Siggraph in Orlando next month. Join
us it's going to be a fun conference.

hi y'all,
I would like to ask if anyone would be so kind as to let me know where I
could obtain the demos? To save the trouble of recording/shipping,
someone with access to a T1 who would be willing to ftp them would be my
personal hero.
Wouldn't you like to be a hero?
Thanks in advance (and sorry for burning bandwith)

Hellooooo chalkpeople,

I'm feeling a bit...saucey at the moment and thought
I would take it out on you!

>From K. Zimmer spewed:
>The only thing that made the experience very negative for
>me was a few anti-American remarks, especially
>"monster-truck-watchin' USA." Is that really necessary?
>Maybe you were referring to a particular SEGMENT of
>American society, or maybe you are just as stupid as the
>people you are trying to mock. Either way, I don't see that
>kind of remark as productive.

Right now my eyes are rolling in my head and what
comes to mind is...Give me a break! Condsidering
some of the comments that have been previously made
by other American chalkies in reference to
foriegners, these people have every right to state
their thoughts about Americans. And I have to say I
have more than I care to number of those 'Ugly
Americans' and they are truly ugly. Let me state at
this point that I am an American.

>or maybe you are just as stupid as the people you are trying
>to mock...

First you get angry because they referred to
Americans as "Monster Truck Watchin' USA" and then
you insinuate they are stupid?! This is not good.
Besides, Monster Truck Watching IS an American thing.
Never encountered that in the UK.... unless I just
missed it.
Simon? Ever been to a monster truck rally? You
might like it actually... ; )

> And remember, we've got more nuclear weapons than
>you. (hee hee - just joking, melt the guns and all that)

This 'joke' was anything but funny. More along the
lines of pompous and arrogant. Hey! Remember, if
you don't like to be teased DON'T do it yourself!

Puleeeze lighten up and relax. There are many
different cultures represented on this list. Why
not open your mind and listen to what they actually
have to say rather than finding fault.

Dom quips:
> Does anyone actually like "My Weapon"?

Oooooh don't go there. That piece of... I suppose
that's not fair of me. Well, I guess I'm not helping
any by saying, I don't like that! She bellows at the
top of her lungs.

And my dear friend Pete Wright stormed:
I'm going to just paraphrase here. I'm tired of
going from screen to screen...
Basically he proclaimed Chalkhills to be boring and
would not last.
Pete....PetePetePete. Pete. You never write! No!
That's not my point, but considering Chalkhills has
been online since oooh, what is it? 1989? Is that
right Mr. Relph? Chalkhills pop quiz everyone! What
year was chalkhills started and who wrote the first
post? I'm wandering again...
Pete! Chalkhills will go on. Just like in life,
chalkhills has it ups and it's downs. And I think
because we have had a glimmer of hope, meaning the
production of the new album, everyone is just anxious
for that new album.

Okay! I think I'm done. Whew! That feels better.
Sorry if I offended anyone but I guess that is how it
goes. Somewhere someone is offended by what another
has to say.

Can't seem to get the tune "Some Lovely" out of my
head. That is soooome tune. Random XTC bit for the
day.

Take care, write soon and remember to wear clean
underwear.
Cheryl

The once great Chalkhills Digest (and you don't know how much it pains
me to say this) - BORING. <<

Or maybe, just maybe, all of above Interesting. Peter - BORING!

Frankly I found all of the above Interesting and Chalkhills has been as its
most interesting this month as it has since I started reading it 9 months or
so ago! There is still a big XTC content, but also something to stretch
people's horizons.

Open your mind, Peter.

Dom, you ain't boring, man!

Simon - I know what you mean about snobbery, and normally, I don't give
a stuff what people like. As Peter Gabriel would say - I know what I
like in my wardrobe - and that's all that matters to me. But I tell you
this, SIR Andrew Lloyd Arsewipe is never going to be allowed to browse
through aforementioned wardrobe and try on MY clothes. No bloody way.
He's not welcome on my land and that's that. This isn't snobbery, this
is common sense.

Also, if ALW is a knight, Peter Gabriel sure as hell should be. Looking
like a pig gets you knighted. Initiating WOMAD gets you nothing.
Where's the logic in that, eh?

Peter Wright - you're right, you know, it has got dreadfully boring
lately. And my contribution is no better, so I'm one to talk. But I
thought I'd go with the flow in case I drew attention to myself.
