In the Wall of Sound article, I got "trippy", "eccentric Brits",
"stagefright" and "legions of fans patiently waiting". I'd have
had bingo if the article mentioned "quirky". Anyone else come close?

I'm not very eloquent about this, but Wonderland has too much
feeling and musical warmth behind it to dismiss. I can overlook
the syn-drum &c; I enjoy it for the flow between music and subject.

Michael Versaci pointed out:

>Okay, let's review some lyrics, shall we?

>Andy Partridge:
>"Dear God"

>"I don't believe in heaven or hell
No saints no sinners no devil as well...
 If there's one thing I don't believe in - it's you"

>John Lennon:
>"God"

>"I don't believe in Bible...
> I don't believe in Jesus" etc.

>"Imagine"

>"Imagine there's no heaven...
 >No hell below us, above us only sky

As if irony hadn't had its day already, Nine Inch Nails' Trent Reznor
has composed some lyrics like:

"God is dead, and no one cares
If there is a hell, I'll see you there"

and

"Hey God, I'm all alone in a world you must despise..."

The coinkydink: XTC has recently signed to TVT Records, NIN's first and
former record label. And, Reznor has cited XTC as being one of his
earliest musical influences, mentioning in an interview their
"brilliant song writing."

Derek Miner suggested:

>As some have pointed out, Andy considers "Peter Pumpkinhead" to be >a
song that fits all martyrs. So "Peter Pumpkinhead" could be Jesus Christ
or John F. Kennedy. What makes the song that way is the universal nature
of the theme. It just so happens that Jesus Christ and John F. Kennedy
are both considered to have been put down by the ruling order because of
ideas dangerous to that ruling order.

How about adding John Lennon to the list of martyrs? (grin)

Sorry, I couldn't resist. Back to you, Derek & Harrison.

Tschalkgerz!

OK, now here's a topic I can get in on, and actually have something to
say - really!

Re: the guitar sound in "Another Satellite"

If any of you has visited my website:

http://www.angelfire.com/fl/sapringer

-or raided the Chalkhills archives, you'll see that I did a MIDI file of
this particular song. In doing so, I had to contend with reproducing
this sound with the instruments that we're stuck with using in making
these files (for those of you in the dark, these General MIDI files
utilize a range of128 instruments of all kinds, but they're fairly
generic - and your choices are limited at times, depending on the music
you're trying to recreate). While I'll concede that a
sampled-and-modified guitar chord is one way that this sound could have
been produced, it isn't necessarily the only way. The instrument I used
(called a 'Metal Pad'-#94 GM) comes fairly close. There is a particular
sitar-like quality to the sound on the recording, and my synth has a
non-GM sound that I use when I do the song for a gig that comes even
closer to the original, and it ain't a guitar.
Just my $.02 worth...

> Regarding English Round-'n'-round< ("English Roundabout")>it is most
definitely in 5/4.<

Correct. Wonderful tune, ain't it? Partridge is a diabolically clever
musical genius.

>Although I'll have to consider "Burning in Optimism's Flames" in 4/4. The
main guitar riff is a figure that offsets itself, repeating every 3 bars,
creating 3 bar phrases.<

Correct-a-mundo again! I am in the process of doing this tune in MIDI
also, and that's what it is - 4/4.

And don't anybody get confused if you're checking out a song for its
time signature, and you find a measure or more that doesn't do what the
rest of the song does - there is music, especially classical, that will
utilize all kinds of time sig changes, so you don't have to be stuck
with the same throughout a piece. Heck, I've seen scores that have a
DOUBLE time signature at the beginning, like 4/4-3/4 - which tells the
player that every OTHER measure is one or the other time sig!!
Put that in yer pipe and smoke it.

Chalkers,

I'm not sure if this will make it for this Thursday's chat, but I just wanted
to mention that I'm starting an IRC chat called, #XTC. I'll be trying to do
this chat every Thursday night at 10pm EST.

Also, I've started a message board about XTC on my web page. I hope you look
at it. The address is http://members.tripod.com/~MollyFa/index.html. Go
check it out.

I know the 4 CD set probably won't be released in the US, which bums me out.
If they want money, they should release it everywhere. I know that won't
work, because it's not the band's decision. Also, it would probably be more
for an import, and I can't afford it. There should be some way to get a
special for the Chalkhills members. There should be a special discount or
something.

Well, that's all I have to say.

Out of lurkdom and into the fire,
After two short years of being on this list (or simply pulling up digests
striaght from the website), this is likely only my third post ever. I enjoy
reading some of what is written (to varying degrees: I love any news from
Mitch, as it usually means GOOD stuff!) and find some of the entries less
than interesting and sometimes plain boring or dull. Yet, I believe in our
collective rights to say most anything we want.
Having said that, I must point a finger to Will, author of the following
lines:

>Attention all chalkhillers who don't want to discuss "Dear God" and God
>anymore, that's what this entire post is about, so if you're not into it,
>feel free to move on to the next message...

...and say, "OK, we can page down to avoid the subject matter, but use a
little discretion, man. You took up nearly one-quarter of the whole digest
(#4-116) with your opinions. Find a way to keep it brief!!"

Having said it, I'm slipping back.

You know, it really bothers me that I was not properly informed of the
hazards involved in acquiring the 95/96 demos (and most dangerously,
  listening to them).

I've bided my time for the past 2 years, holding out for the finished
product (with every intention of adding the demos to my larder before the
taste of an initial listening to the 'product' had left my pallet).

And then the well-meaning but terribly misguided Mr. Phelan posted his
generous offer to provide demo copies and I cracked.

I rationalized that the demos would temporarily satiate my desire to hear
new art from the only people that have the ability to make me desire new
art. It has had precisely the opposite effect. I don't think I can make
  it to January now.

You'll either like it or hate it, and if you hate it, then it gives you

That metaphor doesn't work, does it. It should be something like 'it

To be perfectly frank, I quite enjoyed it, so no fruit from me, Dom.

I thought the guitar in Another Satellite was simply send through a

Wow, how did you find that out ? (If you didn't read it in an

If Mission Impossible is the grandaddy of 5/4 tunes, then Dave
Brubecks Take Five is the great-grandaddy, but then again, even in
renaissance lute music 5/4 measures are to be found, and in medieval
religous chants, too, so there are the true methusalems.

By the way, I come directly from an uni exam, where I had to play

It suddenly dawned on me that I don't have Waxworks on CD. I saw it
today and it doesn't have the white plastic strip on top with the
name of the CD and the artist. I wonder why? Anyhoo, if someone has this
on CD, can you testify to the sound quality? Thanks.

And to the person who berated astrology in the last issue of 'hills...
yes, I used to think it's nothing more than hooey until a college
professor of English mediaeval literature explained the system of
astrology over several classes. Astrology predates the Copernican
revolution and the "Scientific" view of the cosmos, but for many
people (yea, even today) astrology holds more meaning as a cosmological
system for the universe. Quite frankly, our current common thinking
of the cosmos leaves me (and I'm sure others) feeling quite cold about
it all. Yes, on one level the sun is just another star in the cosmos,
but of what use would this "truth" have been to an agrarian society
that depended on it for sustinence? Wouldn't it have made more sense
for them to deify it, symbolize it, and worship it?

Until a few years ago, Western medicine scoffed at acupuncture, until
people began getting better from using it. I'm using this as an example
to show that not ONE system provides all the answers. I'd rather leave
myself open to thinking that, although I am not personally interested
in astrology, there are I am sure aspects of it that help people feel
more connected to the cosmos. I'll bet that several hundred years from
now people will be ridiculing our bright and shining scientific "truths."

When Andy says, "I'm like a miniature sun," he's making the star made
from hydrogen gas around which the earth and other entities rotate...
relavant to the way he feels. So which is a better explanation of what
the sun is? Science's definition...or Andy's?

Now, on to another reason for my note - two CDs that XTCers might
want to note are Catherine Wheel's "Adam and Eve" (underrated, that)
and Jesus & Mary Chain's "Monki". Hey! Coupla's religious references
there! Guess that put me officially in the "honest to God" C-hill
debates. :-) X 1,000,000

in the last digest Hank Wirtz asked about the possibility
of Urban Dance Squad being XTC fans. I haven't heard the
song with the NLIOL quote, but I remember that some time

all of this wrongly.

There will be only 100 tapes made this time.

I will start accepting orders on September 1 via acoustic mail. No

before August 31 and orders are heavy (there is usually an initial

Yes, I know the website has ordering information... I will have the

I'm not going to go into a diatribe about Richard's flaming of me
yesterday on the list, but in my defense...

I never committed to provide Richard with a version of "Towers of
London". When he sent out his initial request for submissions, I
"reserved" Towers Of London. This was back in Nov/Dec of 97. Shortly
after reserving the song, I joined a productive original band that took
up 125% of my time. Alas, recording someone else's song (albeit one of my
idols) was of low priority when the record label we were on had paid
thousands of dollars to secure a quality producer, Caram Costanzo (Talk
Show, STP, Matthew Sweet, Pearl Jam), and an expensive recording studio.
So I never got to record that version of Towers Of London. Instead I'm
touring the Southeast United States, and gearing up to tour the rest of
the nation and possibly Europe.

However, I never said I would record it. I only reserved the song.
Richard never received a confirmation from me saying I would get him a
version of Towers of London. For him to delay his compilation on my
behalf is ludicrous. The blame lies solely and squarely on his shoulders.
If he's in charge of this compilation, he should have never banked on my
reservation of the song, especially since he hadn't heard anything from
me since then.

I refuse to be his scapegoat.

And BTW, Richard, if you wish to further discuss this, let's keep it out
of the list. It's between you and I. It was a pretty petty thing for you
to flame me to an entire crowd and make me you scapegoat..

First, I can't agree with Jill's logic, but I certainly wouldn't want
this to appear as some 'assault' on her personally. I'm for everyone
expressing their views , so here is mine.

(minor point)
Andy has stated in interviews that the genesis of the song "This Is Pop"
was due to the repetitive and mind numbing question,
" What do you call what you do?"

Music can be discussed, obviously, but it is an art form which exists
in it's own 'realm'...just as with the visual arts....speaking of it
only takes you to a given threshold, after which there literally is
"no language in our lungs"
Blah blah, huh ?

(MAJOR POINT)
I'd like to suggest this alternative to any chalkhillians who are

'describe' XTC;

remedial intros to in-depth theory (depending on you current literacy
regarding music) It will reward you in exponential and unimaginable
ways.

I have a long standing (and winded) theory that the tragic state of
current 'pop' music owes to the decline in the general publics 'hands
on' knowledge of music. Up until the not-too-distant past, if you
wanted to hear music, you made it yourself.
Blah-blah, huh ?....
if it sounds simple it's because I wouldn't expect you to page down 5 times
for one post

For Chalkhills vinyl hounds... I found the following 45s available at

Generals And Majors / same DJ RSO 300 NM $5

Supposedly a carton or two of the Adventure Club CDs were found in a
warehouse. This CD contains songs by XTC [Blue Beret], Frank Black,
Jellyfish, Catherine Wheel, James, Cranberries, Blur, His Name Is Alive,
Lilac Time, Trash Can Sinatras, Lemonheads, Posies and a few others for
$15 postpaid.

...and in the fiercely contested cupholder wars, the new Honda Odyssey
will hold its own with a total of nine libation stations.

TO ORDER ANY OF THESE RECORDS, SEND CASH, CHECK OR MONEY ORDER TO:
Reel George Productions
P.O. Box 280173
Dallas Texas 75228.

inquiries to: gimarc@nstar.net

I am not affiliated in any way with the above offer but in the Six (or
less) Degrees Of Seperation Dept. ("Mom! He's starting it again!")...

I got drunk with Becki DiGregario (one) on red wine after she saw my
name in the Mix Music Resources Directory (two) which lists Planet
Dallas Recording Studios (three) which recorded XTC playing Blue Beret
and was released by George Gimarc (four) on the Adventure Club CD (five)
which leaves me somewhere between PFM and BFD (sick).

Cheers, Richard "Closer to the latter" Pedretti-Allen

p.s. ya know... I have one of the XTC 45s of "Ten Feet Tall" (with the
rulers on the cover) around somewhere... is anyone really willing to pay
me money for that?

Subject: Funk Pop A Roll Seduced My Vole....

To all those who told me to perservere with FPAR because it would
eventually grow on me - you were (almost) 100% correct. I was listening to
"Mummer" again last night, and this time the last track just *hit* me
(rather than sliding past virtually unnoticed). My first thought was "How
the hell did I miss this before?"
Rather than growing on me eventually, it stuck itself in my head very
suddenly (and, it seems, very deeply - I've been humming the damn thing for
16 hours straight). I figure it's about time I figured out what everyone
else already knew about this song. Now if I could just get my ears around
"Wonderland".... (sorry Molly, it *still* sounds a bit wet - each to
his/her own, I guess).
Again, to those of you who said it was just a matter of time, thanks a
heap. To those of you who E-Mailed me privately and, based on my original
dislike of FPAR, saw fit to question my heritage (and you know who you are)
: get nicked.

While I'm here, I want to thank Richard P-A for his swift reply to my
CC98 question. Pencil me in for CC99....

XTC Song Of The Day : Funk Pop A Roll (haha! what else?)
Non-XTC Song Of The Day : What I Don't Know About You - You Am I (they're
an Australian band
who cite XTC as a major influence)

I apologise for my last entry it appears that I offended at least one
person and possibly more. I had originally intended to email our fine
organiser and ask him not to enter it. But when I read the information
regarding the stopping of the religious entries I stupidly assumed that
it would not me entered so laziness took over and there it was. I am not
an idiot and I do know my history. I thank you all for some great
conversation and some wonderfully polite and friendly emails.

<One of the things I loved the most about Chalkhills before my absence was
<the references to less known bands and musicians that I might not have
<heard about. Some great examples are Jason Faulkner, Poundcake, The Lilic
<Time, Spooky Reuben, St. Surreal, Sugarplastic, Eric Matthews, and many
<many others.

<Is this now a taboo thread to pursue?

<I sure hope not.

<Who else are you folks listening to that bring these artists to mind?

I've got two words for anyone who is a lover of smart, melodic songwriting at
its finest - CANDY BUTCHERS. Lead singer Mike Viola sang (although didn't
write) "That Thing You Do" from the movie of the same name and not only has an
amazing pop voice but writes the best songs of anyone I've heard in quite a
long while. Although still unsigned I believe, they did have an EP on Blue
Thumb which is absolutely perfect and they also tour quite a bit so if you
have a chance...

I get nothing out of this other than to turn you on to America's best unsigned
band.

Regards to all
