First of all, I'd like to say that the Minister of Propaganda is a SHE, not a HE. Secondly, I was not criticising Swindon in the slightest, nor were the members of my family, really. In all reality, they were criticising ME in this farce more than they were badmouthing Swindon! I was merely providing what I thought was a humourous anecdote in response to Ira Lieman's post. I'm not sure if my family has been to Swindon, but it's all in good fun when they tease me about my wanting to visit. It's not everyday that an American would excitedly ask to go to Swindon, now is it? They found it very odd that I even knew such a place existed. In conclusion, I say I haven't made it to Swindon because I haven't the resources (namely money) to return to England, not because I have "naively accepted the misinformed views" of my English family. - Piriya Minister of Propaganda http://www.lfc.edu/~vongkpp "And praise will come to those whose kindness leaves you without debt, and bends the shape of things to come that haven't happened yet." -- Neil Finn

Christ, everyone has a guilty pleasure, let me have mine! I REALIZE the songs don't have depth, I go to other singers and bands for that. Duran Duran is only what I listen to for mindless fun, and yes, I know, for many, many of you it doesn't even amount up to that. Regarding the whole Dexy's mess, I shouldn't have referred to the entire band as crap when I've only heard one song by them (Come On Eileen, of course). Therefore I don't think Dexy's Midnight Runners suck, but the song IMHO, does. It just sounds like a bunch of hillbillies pounding a piano to me. The rest of their songs I have not heard, and therefore can't, and shouldn't, have given an opinion on. Oookay, enough of that. Responding to the "Opinions on your favorite XTC album" post, considering that I'm pretty new and haven't responded to such a post as of yet, I'll reply to it this time. I'd have to go with the Big Express. Every XTC album I've listened to has had to grow on me in some way, I've just recently warmed up to Oranges & Lemons, still warming up to Drums & Wires, and remember that period of time when I thought Skylarking was "boring." Not with the Big Express -- all of the songs immediately caught on to me. Smalltown, This World Over, Wake Up(now one of my favorite songs ever), You're The Wish You Are I Had, All You Pretty Girls, Seagulls Screaming, Shake You Donkey Up, and ESPECIALLY the climactic Train Running Low On Soul Coal were ALL instant musical classics to me. Plus, it's pretty much XTC's only hard-edged, jerky-guitar album from their later period; most of their later albums are full of slower songs. Why am I telling you this? Anyway, just thought I'd share a few opinions. Let sleeping dogs lie and don't touch the whole Duran/Dexy controversy again -- musical taste wars are extremely hard to "win." * ---------------------------------------------- Rich Bunnell or "Metal Man," whichever sounds more insane http://members.xoom.com/taoster/ * ----------------------------------------------

First, are you absolutely POSITIVE that the way YOU pronoun the name Ralph is the correct way? The orginal way? The English language is a funny thing you know. And, if you wanted to make your point about spelling the name correctly you could have at least spelt Raif right. It's RAEF, by the way. How do you know that Ralph is not some middle English name pronounced Raef? Just some things to think about... And OKAY! I CAN'T TAKE IT ANY LONGER! I MUST COME FORWARD.... I was once a complete and utter hopeless Duranie. Posters galore adorned my walls and the stack of pin-ups was inches tall. I STILL own all the 12"s and albums I bought. I can't part with them. In this day and age they do not fit, but at the time I really enjoyed them and was really into their music. They were fun! And that is why I liked them. I don't care what any of you yahoos think! Every now and then it is a blast to get the old albums out and dance my little heart out. Now I must bid farewell for a short time. It's not in anger that I have to unsubscribe but good fortune! I have landed a job I love in one of my favourite cities...Boston! This Tuesday, August 25th, I start a cross-country trek to my new home. I hope it won't be too long before I am back online. Mr. Showbiz, an entertainment-based site, is having a "Vote for the best album of the decade" contest. They have done the 60s and 70s, and are now on the 80s. I feel there is nothing wrong with trying to stuff the ballot box in Swindon's favor. There is only one album on the list from XTC (ES), which does not mean you cannot write in albums-you can. So, I urge everyone this week to go to this site: http://www.wallofsound.com/features/stories/top_100_albums/80s/ and at least hit English Settlement as one choice. Also, tell everyone you know to do the same. It requires an e-mail address to vote, so if you have more than one, use it. Maybe we can spread the word about XTC this way-who knows? Jeff said: >XTC won't make it here simply because they don't sound like anyone else and try to challenge the listener with each record (well, up to O&L at least). It's too much work for the average Joe to get into.< THIS is a subject of interest for me... First off, if the vast majority of the generic public is overwhelmed by the music that XTC provides, O&L and Nonesuch aren't any different that they'll suddenly be able to relate to them, and I tire of all the O&L/Nonesuch naysaying that goes on around here. The music on these two STILL blow away the incredibly vast majority of the rest of what's out there for us to buy, so raspberries to the lot of ya... ;-) Now, WHY IS XTC's music so hard for the generic public to fathom? I don't know if it's just me, but from the moment I put my first XTC album on ("ES", on Rolling Stone Magazines' recommendation, lo these many years past), I never had the first lick of trouble relating. In fact, it was a revelation. A revelation that I have attempted to share with a lot of people who JUST DON'T GET IT! Why?!? It's music... it has a beat... time signatures aren't all that out there... much of the music follows basic song structure rules... there's hugely competent playing going on... but WHY, because I like XTC, do a lot of the people that I've associated with since think I'm some kind of nutcase for digging it? I've always tried to put my finger on this... why doesn't a cool little pop tune like "Mayor Of Simpleton" just get overplayed to hell on the radio? There's a radio station locally that I would consider a great candidate for playing XTC (particularly the new stuff WHEN IT GETS HERE), but I somehow get the feeling it won't happen. -Brian

(Over time, however, XTC waged a successful campaign to overthrow the Jam as my favorite band). I've always been somewhat surprised by the relative obscurity into which the Jam seems to have fallen. I don't see them cited much as influences among groups today, even though much of the alternative scene, from Green Day to Blur to Oasis, owes a lot to them. Do you ever see Jam flashbacks on MTV? And how 'bout a Jam tribute album? That's a project that is long overdue. It's amazing how well the old Jam albums have aged over time -- put on "Setting Sons" or "All Mod Cons" and notice how fresh, invigorating and current they still sound (even our beloved XTC have dated themselves in some places). And you have to respect Mr. Weller for not manufacturing a shameless Jam Reunion Tour, which has had to be a temptation for him. But while we're on the subject, I wonder what Rick Buckler and Bruce Foxton are up to these days? Hey, anybody know what's going on with Elvis Costello? Seems he's been silent longer than usual. I say, "Vominos la playa! Ole!" Next, saw Neil Finn last night at La Zona Rosa here in Austin. He was wonderful. Had a terrific backup band which included his sixteen year old (Danny-Partridge-lookalike) son. I love the fact that, intermittently, everyone in the band would jump up and trade instruments -- and they played their instruments convincingly. Now that's musicianship! Any dawdlers out there need to pick up Finn's "Try Whistling This." It's a tremendous album. Are there any Blue Nile fans among you Chalkhillians? BN is an amazing Scottish band who've put out only three albums in 14 years. Moody. Surreal. And powerfully quiet. "A Walk Across The Rooftops" is one of my favorite albums of all time. "Hats" is a particularly moving album as well. Also, those of you in the UK should check out a band called Rialto. I'm really impressed with their recent eponymous effort. Any band who lists John Barry as a primary influence peeks my attention. Unfortunately the disc has not yet been released here in the U.S. (Keep your eyes peeled.) Not sure why, but they kind of remind me of the Liverpudlian band, The Real People, an outstanding group that's largely unknown here in the states. In my opinion, their only U.S. release "The Real People", is one of the best albums of the early nineties. You can probably find this disk in a cutout or 99-cent pile somewhere. Such a shame. No marketing. Typical. There just don't seem to be that many bands, in recent memory, who regularly give me goose bumps -- but all of these bands do. You should give them a listen. Thanks all. The CD-ROM portion of the new one is pretty cute too. Recommended. ~p@ul __________________________________ Scissorman - XTC "Scissorman" is from the album Drums and Wires. It is the second tune we've covered from this particular album, the first being "Making Plans for Nigel" which appeared on the Miscellaneous Debris album. Ironically, when we toured with U2 a few years ago Bono told me that PRIMUS reminded him of XTC. I took it as a large compliment. (bassist Les Claypool)

I love this book. I've found some interesting things about them. The only thing I need to know is, is this book acuate, or is it full of lies? I don't think it's full of lies, but I'm not sure. I second the motion about VH1 here in America doing a Behind the Music show on them. I think we should all write to VH1 about the idea. Just go to www.vh1.com or AOL keyword VH1. NON XTC CONTENT If anyone wants to join my newwave2 mailing list check out my web page at www.trpod.com/~MollyFa/index.html. I'm looking for new people. Molly

Big block letters and claiming to be a carbonated slap in the face. "Please note XTC's stimulating effect if consumed in the evening". There is a phone number on it for those interested. (Question is, is the Scott Thunes in the credits of Skylarking the same as the bassist who played with Zappa?) > - Funny story about Frank Zappa: a few years ago Scott Thunes and Mike > McNealy (sp?) Just in case there wasn't enough dilatory grabassing going on, I fed that last sentence to the Babelfish (http://babelfish.altavista.digital.com), went from English to Spanish and back again, and got, "'Mup' is a Californian meaning 'ampere hour of the term, hello Dave and Andy of XTC. I have admired of length XTC and is a great pleasure to satisfy him.'" WHOOO! "Download SYSTRAN Personal," guilelessly urge the cheerful thimbleriggers at Alta Vista, butter completely failing to melt in their mouths, "Translate your private documents in seconds!" And I am absolutely *melting* the UUNET East Coast Backbone doing just that, thinking of the joyful Jarry-esque jumble of sexy double-entendres, misaligned antecedents, and irrelevant units of measurement I can introduce into my will, my mortgage agreement, and my voluminous personal correspondence. I sure hope them embassy-hating terrorist guys with the incompetent beards and closely-knit eyebrows don't figure out how easy it is to induce a matter/antimatter reaction in San Mateo, CA. All they gotta do is feed the first few pages of Finnegans Wake (http://www.trentu.ca/faculty/jjoyce/fw.htm) to the Babelfish. And how's this for a Degree of Bacon (Grado de Tocino) to bring the whole business full circle (para traer al negocio entero completo el circulo)? Check http://www.erols.com/fiction-net/pix_bob_and_keneally.htm. On the left, there, massaging his eyeball with the vocal microphone and evidently receiving great satisfaction from it is my worthless little brother Bob, Fiction frontman who once posted something funny on Chalkhills. And over there on the right, doing a pretty bang-up Yazbek impression, is Steve Vai's Mike Keneally. Harrison "polyglot, drunken sot, bet you have to pee a lot" Sherwood Pee Est: From the Q&A portion of Keneally's website: Q:4. Does Scott Thunes have his own website yet? What is he doing now? A: No website to my knowledge (you might try searching "Thunes" [it doesn't get you anything--HS]), and he's currently playing with Lee Ving's band Fear. He's done work with Lee on and off for a few years, so I guess they've finally made their association official. Scott lives up in Marin County now, we've lost contact.
