not only are you completely right and i had never thought of it in exactly
those terms before, but that also might explain my aversion to the song -
the very fact that the music parallels the sentiment in the exact opposite
vein as "When I'm 64" is what makes it impossible for me to like it.

He did poll more votes than the Liberal party (or whatever name it was
going under at the time) a few years back: undoubtedly his greatest
achievement.

He holds the record, by some considerable distance, of standing at more
elections and by-elections than any other person.

Hey, Chalks:

I can't believe I referred to myself as "Benjy" in front of a few
thousand XTC fans. Please forgive. It was late at night.

I'm going to try to have my California relatives pick me up a can of
"XTC." My young cousin would, I'm sure, drink it, but it seems to be the
equivalent of giving heroin to an eleven-year-old.

I've always thought of "Bungalow" as a fairly cheeseball song (which
isn't to say I don't like it), and I agree with Harrison's observations.
It sounds like the title song of some awful movie with Sally Field and
Hume Cronyn, where Hume ends up in some "bungalow" in Miami with tubes
sticking out of his nose. It might also star Blossom and Screech, but
wait -- they're dead! (Now *that* was bad taste...) It could have
certainly been followed by a new Andy song: "Geriatrics are Burning"?
"Seagulls Screaming Prozac, Prozac"? "I Named One of My Kids After a
Plant"? "Mermaid Sued (Virgin)"? "I Can't Owe Her (Alimony)"?

My roommate has a horrible habit of listening to Mel Torme ("Mel
Torment") on headphones, and randomly singing phrases. It drives me
crazier than a stupid cat in a Skinner box. ("Push the button?! Push the
button?! Aieeeee!!")

Don't forget to respond to the "Great Lines" survey!

To all tradees: It's going to be a bit before I can actually get down to

Someone brought up a good point about the XTC covers, about how the covers
are getting airplay while the original ones are stagnating in a moldy closet
with all the other 45's. It's a shame we in New Orleans don't get to hearXTC
anymore, seeing as that a group of idiots pulled the plug on the best
alternative station we had, turning it into COUNTRY!!!!!

You're thinking of Hawkwind, I believe. Quicksilver, at least in the
USA, was actually Quicksilver Messenger Service, a California band
from the late-60s/early-70s. Hawkwind, the everlasting English band,
featured lyrics by Moorcock. But I am not a Hawkwind expert, by any
means. Someone else care to comment?

I believe The Turtles' record company forbade Flo and Eddie from using
those names when they performed with The Mothers. So they had to use
their real names. But the version of "Happy Together" from Zappa's
_Fillmore East 1971_ live album is a killer.

Hello all,

Well, the local "alternative" radio station has a commercial
out using "Dear God" in it. It is pretty cheesy, somewhere along the
lines of "other radio staions better pray to their maker, because
we're back, better than ever" type of thing....lame. I heard it
only once, driving and was so happy to hear the beginning notes, only
to see it all go up in a fiery crash. The funny (or not so funny) thing
is, I've yet to ever hear an Xtc song played "for real" on the
station.....grumble....grumble.
Also, a couple days ago I dug out Meat Beat Manifestos' "Satyricon",
and while listening thumbed through the cd booklet. I forgot, that
inside in the "thank you/influence"? section, along with many cool
people like the Beatles, Zappa, Captain Beefheart, Cabaret Voltaire,
Eno, Public Enemy etc. we have Xtc. Does anybody know if Xtc had ever
crossed paths with MBM, as they are also from Swindon? Or am I just
trying to connect their paths for my own benefit? The music couldn't
be further apart, but they had to run into each other, hadn't they?
Finally, and I am really late on this one, but: I guess a couple
of months back on 120 Minutes on MTV, they featured Xtc as their
"flashback" of the week, where they talk about the band, play a
video, etc. I missed it, but was told by a friend just this week. Does
anybody know how it was, what video (s) etc? Thanks a lot...

With entirely much too much free time,
Perry

Hey all. Just a couple comments/questions.

First off I'd like to partake in the chat sessions on Buzzcity but call me
lazy or stupid but I don't know how to go about it on a Mac using Netscape.
Anyone out there who could let me know what software I need and where I
might be able to get it? If all goes well I could thank you in real time.

Books are Burning - Always knew the solos were there but after all this
discussion I pulled out the cd and listened again. First time through I
didn't pay enough attention and the song ended before I knew it without me
really listening to those solos (in other words they didn't stand out from
the rest of the song at all. They fit right in.), .... so I hit the replay
and listened through again. This time when the solos came up at the end I
REALLY listened to them for the first time and heard the difference of the
guitar sounds. It doesn't strike me that these guitar parts are in any way
overblown. Guitar solos are a perfect way for good guitarists to introduce
some kind of improvisation into a song. It allows a chance to play around
with and expand on the melody.

Re: Producers. I'd love to think that the Dust Brothers or any other
producers that are considered "hot" right now in the music press would jump
at the chance of producing the boys, but I'd say more realistically that
they will be lucky to find someone who is good who will be willing to tangle
with Andy...what with his reputation in the studio and all. That said, if
they are able to get someone (like the Dust Brothers) who get press about
who they happen to be producing next, it sure would give a boost to exposure
for a new album...... This just in... "We really liked the sound of the
Beck album, but we're having a difficult time getting a hold of the Dust
Brothers." Ugh! Don't sound so desperate! .... Gee, I really like the look
of Cindy Crawford, but I'm having a tough time getting a hold of her. Ouch!

Here's a question.....if the band hates doing videos so much, and they never
made any money for so long because they had to pay for all their recording
expenses, promotion including VIDEO's.....then why the heck did they make so
many of them for Mummer. What were they/the record label/their management
thinking??? I could be wrong (I'm sure someone will let me know if I am :),
but I think they made videos for Great Fire, Love on a Farm Boy's Wages, In
Loving Memory of a Name, Human Alchemy, Wonderland, and Funk, Pop and Roll.
No wonder they were in debt so long.

For any of you Elvis Costello fan's out there I can get my hands on new
copies of the Ryko release of King of America with the bonus disc "Live on
Broadway, 1986" and the cd of Blood and Chocolate with the bonus "Overview
disc". Mail me if your interested.

I just remembered to tell people that the day after we heard about the press
release for the Idea label and it's deal with Cooking Vinyl that the web's
entertainment super-page Mr. Showbiz (owned by ABC/Disney) had it as a LEAD
music story on it's start up page! Someone there must be a fan?!

Jon Holden-Dye mentioned Rory McLeod, a Cooking Vinyl artist. I would like
to recommend him also. Jump at the chance of seeing him live. He's a world
travelling busker with great lyrics. Some think of him as a folkier Billy
Bragg (but that's probably more to do with the accent.) I remember one song
I heard him sing live about when he was busking around Mexico and one night
was approached by a man who asked him if he would come to his house and play
for his family for a very small sum of money. When Rory arrived at the one
room house the man drew back a curtain and there was one bed about ten feet
wide with his wife and six (?) children all sleeping in a row..... Rory
played for them and the lyrics say how being close with these people and
sharing their house he felt like a father, brother and son all at the same
time. It's one of those magical songs that bring tears of emotion to your
eyes. A beautiful image.

Well that's my post for the month. Someday I'll try and comment on topics
when they are still actively being discussed. Until then you can just
ignore me like old news.

Ciao, Rob.

Lately I've noticed Andy's "bak[ing] beautiful girls" and

WHile I am at it, I think the lead for Church of Women has to rate among
Andy's best. I hope it makes it unaltered onto the cd although I would love
to hear a Gregorian response to it, set my knees a'quivering even more.

My fantasy meeting with Andy:

It's in an elevator in Puerto Rico where Andy had been taking a vacation and
for days has been totally free from anyone recognizing him (I think I am the
only fan on the island). So he walks into the elevator with his kids, and
amid our upwards rise I hum......"Caaape Canveral, FLorida". Well, he is so
impressed with my reference that we strike up a conversation and have a
lovely afternoon that ends with a small jam session where he shows me ALL
the chords for Love on a Farmboy's Wages.

I would love to hear about YOUR fantasy meeting with Andy.

Good Evening Chalkhillians From A Baby Chalkhillian,
(Don't mind the grease spots..it was not KFC!)

 To Martin Bell:

Masterpiece theater! (Southern Californian myself and would've loved to
have heard the "embarrassing approximation of an American accent".) All I
have to say is, "I'm sorry, so sorry". (Still chuckling.)
One time that I had gone into 'chat' I met up with this person who had XTC
as his/her handle. I asked them, "Nice name..are you a fan?" and "XTC"
replied, "Fan of what?". It was probably one of the scantily clad bimbos
from the commercial.

OK, here I go again with another one of my questions. (Sorry if it's
starting to sound like a record is skipping on some remote corner of the
earth.) Anyone heard the CD DEMOS 5 "The Big Express and Various Demos"?
(Ducking from the pies that might be thrown.)

Strange, surreal, and er...skeletal! Hearing "Bike Ride To The Moon" and
"Seagulls Screaming..." so stripped down was (imagine at this point the
accent of an acid-casualty cali surfer) like a total trip, man! And at
least I got the accent right! <s>

Cordially,

Spleen. Now there is a word you don't hear much on this list.

At that point, they should have said: Ron, you fool. You don't want OUR
cheezy version...why have skim milk when you can have the milk shake? WE
REFUSE TO RECORD THIS GREAT SONG THAT STIL HAS BITS OF THE WRAPPING PAPER ON
IT IT'S SO NEW. CALL XTC RIGHT NOW AND BEG THEM IN FRONT OF GOD AND

Yes, they do dress like DUmmies, my error.

OH, so THAT is the way it works. The next thing you are going to tell me is

Regarding the song, 'Bungalow': I read an article wherein Andy said it was
one of his favorite Colin songs, and in
fact, he'd wished he'd written it. He
very much appreciated the idea of writing
                                a song for his parents.

XTC deal: Finally. I'll see you guys in May.

No, Chalkengrubbers, it's not a typo. The favourite XTC lyrics that
you've submitted (and, hopefully, will continue to submit) are collected

No way. That is a piece of understated brilliance. Any of you guitar
heroes attempt to work out the guitar chords for that one? If you should
happen to try to play along, you will be dazzled by the way Mr. P has
managed to make very major chords sound minor. And who's "we"? Let's
not start to think "we" have too much of a hand in this. Remember, it's
XTC's album, not ours. "We" are just the consumers.

Dear Chalkers,

[1] I taped the excellent 1982 Rockpalast live show that was repeated
on German TV at 4.30 last night(!)
This is the only English Settlement tour concert that was
filmed (almost) entirely. So, if anybody is interested in :

- the audio recorded on stereo cassette or
- the video in mono VHS (EuroPAL system)

... they should email me privately at mmello@knoware.nl

If you want the video in NTSC you'll have to transfer it yourself...

[2] Tonight I have seen the light; David Gregory is God
- and AMANDA is His Prophet ;)

[3] Pretty soon it will be twenty years ago...
(answers before the end of this week please)

Actually, now I think of it, Michael Moorcock himself used to be in a band
(was it Quicksilver?), so if the boys are fans then maybe a future
collaboration wouldn't be entirely out of the question. From what I
remember of Quicksilver the results might not be to everybody's taste.<

Don't know about whether XTC are influenced by Moorcock, but MM's band was
called Deep Fixx. He was also involved with both Hawkwind (featured in
Moorcock's novel "The time of the Hawklords") and Blue Oyster Cult,
primarily as lyricist (songs like BOC's "Great Sun Jester") but also
occasionally as bassist.

our own, our very own Joshua Hall-Bachner sighes:

I'd have guessed toys and nursery rhymes, or comic book superheroes. But
then again, how many XTC songs mention birds? Rook, Liarbird (and cuckoo),
Seagulls, My Bird Performs plus Scarecrow People, "She has six swans...",
"...shiny things just like a magpie", the sound of crows in Senses..., the
"blue birds" in That Wave and Blue Overall, the parrots of Wrapped in Grey,
The cuckoos of Grass, Gaddafy Duck in Merely a Man, Gulls in Across this
Antheap. You could also make a case for the kite in Miniature Sun, although
that's probably a reference to the toy. Probably someone will mention the
ladybird, although this is almost certainly a reference to the insect -
called ladybugs in the US IIRC (And to the nursery rhyme). No chickens,
Martin - sorry! Any I've missed?

Heh! Almost missed "Skaylarking"!

Subject: Skylarking revisited

Well, Summer approaches here in the sunny south, and as always, this means
a time that Skylarking gets into high rotation. However, listening to it
again after a gap of a few months I have noticed one or two things that I
haven't noticed previously:

1) of course, this could be a dialectic thing about the West VCoutry area
the lads are from, but I noticed for the first time that Colin is not
"Lying here..." at the beginning of "Grass". He is "Laying here...". Yet
another sexual connotation to what is, already a sexy little song?

2) "Ballet for a rainy day" has always reminded me of an earlier song, but
I'vew never been able to put my finger on exactly which one before. The
opening bars sound so... familiar. However, playing the song yesterday, I
suddenly found my self humming the sixties song "Everyone's gone to the
moon"! Same few opening notes, I think. Anyone else notice this?

3) Suddenly, after listening to the song for years, "Season's Cycle" really
hit me as being VERY Beach Boys. I've only ever really listened to the
bouncy fast chorus before, but the middle section's intricacies are a
delight!

4) "Earn enough for us" also reminds me very strongly of a much earlier
song, probably sixties. But can I think of which one???

on an unrelated note - is the ship's horn between tracks on the Dukes album
(?from memory, before Brainiac's Daughter) the same one as on Madness's
"Night Boat to Cairo"

It all goes back to Screaming Jay Hawkins. There is none higher.(typical
that with every good idea in rock and roll it usually originates with a
Southern black person who sold the rights for his songs for a few dollars)
