not only are you completely right and i had never thought of it in exactly
those terms before, but that also might explain my aversion to the song -
the very fact that the music parallels the sentiment in the exact opposite
vein as "When I'm 64" is what makes it impossible for me to like it.

actually i think it sounds kind of great - in that excellently tacky aussie

Hey, Chalks:
I can't believe I referred to myself as "Benjy" in front of a few
thousand XTC fans. Please forgive. It was late at night.
I'm going to try to have my California relatives pick me up a can of
"XTC." My young cousin would, I'm sure, drink it, but it seems to be the
equivalent of giving heroin to an eleven-year-old.
I've always thought of "Bungalow" as a fairly cheeseball song (which
isn't to say I don't like it), and I agree with Harrison's observations.
It sounds like the title song of some awful movie with Sally Field and
Hume Cronyn, where Hume ends up in some "bungalow" in Miami with tubes
sticking out of his nose. It might also star Blossom and Screech, but
wait -- they're dead! (Now *that* was bad taste...) It could have
certainly been followed by a new Andy song: "Geriatrics are Burning"?
"Seagulls Screaming Prozac, Prozac"? "I Named One of My Kids After a
Plant"? "Mermaid Sued (Virgin)"? "I Can't Owe Her (Alimony)"?
My roommate has a horrible habit of listening to Mel Torme ("Mel
Torment") on headphones, and randomly singing phrases. It drives me
crazier than a stupid cat in a Skinner box. ("Push the button?! Push the
button?! Aieeeee!!")

Also, a couple days ago I dug out Meat Beat Manifestos' "Satyricon", and while listening thumbed through the cd booklet. I forgot, that inside in the "thank you/influence"? section, along with many cool people like the Beatles, Zappa, Captain Beefheart, Cabaret Voltaire, Eno, Public Enemy etc. we have Xtc. Does anybody know if Xtc had ever crossed paths with MBM, as they are also from Swindon? Or am I just trying to connect their paths for my own benefit? The music couldn't be further apart, but they had to run into each other, hadn't they? Finally, and I am really late on this one, but: I guess a couple of months back on 120 Minutes on MTV, they featured Xtc as their "flashback" of the week, where they talk about the band, play a video, etc. I missed it, but was told by a friend just this week. First off I'd like to partake in the chat sessions on Buzzcity but call me lazy or stupid but I don't know how to go about it on a Mac using Netscape. Books are Burning - Always knew the solos were there but after all this discussion I pulled out the cd and listened again. First time through I didn't pay enough attention and the song ended before I knew it without me really listening to those solos (in other words they didn't stand out from the rest of the song at all. They fit right in.), .... so I hit the replay and listened through again. This time when the solos came up at the end I REALLY listened to them for the first time and heard the difference of the guitar sounds. It doesn't strike me that these guitar parts are in any way overblown. Guitar solos are a perfect way for good guitarists to introduce some kind of improvisation into a song. It allows a chance to play around with and expand on the melody. Re: Producers. I'd love to think that the Dust Brothers or any other producers that are considered "hot" right now in the music press would jump at the chance of producing the boys, but I'd say more realistically that they will be lucky to find someone who is good who will be willing to tangle with Andy...what with his reputation in the studio and all. That said, if they are able to get someone (like the Dust Brothers) who get press about who they happen to be producing next, it sure would give a boost to exposure for a new album...... This just in... "We really liked the sound of the Beck album, but we're having a difficult time getting a hold of the Dust Brothers." Ugh! Don't sound so desperate! .... Gee, I really like the look of Cindy Crawford, but I'm having a tough time getting a hold of her. Ouch! Here's a question.....if the band hates doing videos so much, and they never made any money for so long because they had to pay for all their recording expenses, promotion including VIDEO's.....then why the heck did they make so many of them for Mummer. What were they/the record label/their management thinking??? I could be wrong (I'm sure someone will let me know if I am :), but I think they made videos for Great Fire, Love on a Farm Boy's Wages, In Loving Memory of a Name, Human Alchemy, Wonderland, and Funk, Pop and Roll. No wonder they were in debt so long. For any of you Elvis Costello fan's out there I can get my hands on new copies of the Ryko release of King of America with the bonus disc "Live on Broadway, 1986" and the cd of Blood and Chocolate with the bonus "Overview disc". Mail me if your interested. I just remembered to tell people that the day after we heard about the press release for the Idea label and it's deal with Cooking Vinyl that the web's entertainment super-page Mr. Showbiz (owned by ABC/Disney) had it as a LEAD music story on it's start up page! Someone there must be a fan?! Jon Holden-Dye mentioned Rory McLeod, a Cooking Vinyl artist. I would like to recommend him also. Jump at the chance of seeing him live. He's a world travelling busker with great lyrics. Some think of him as a folkier Billy Bragg (but that's probably more to do with the accent.) I remember one song I heard him sing live about when he was busking around Mexico and one night was approached by a man who asked him if he would come to his house and play for his family for a very small sum of money. When Rory arrived at the one room house the man drew back a curtain and there was one bed about ten feet wide with his wife and six (?) children all sleeping in a row..... Rory played for them and the lyrics say how being close with these people and sharing their house he felt like a father, brother and son all at the same time. It's one of those magical songs that bring tears of emotion to your eyes. A beautiful image. Well that's my post for the month. fact, he'd wished he'd written it. He

However, listening to it again after a gap of a few months I have noticed one or two things that I haven't noticed previously: 1) of course, this could be a dialectic thing about the West VCoutry area the lads are from, but I noticed for the first time that Colin is not "Lying here..." at the beginning of "Grass". He is "Laying here...". Yet another sexual connotation to what is, already a sexy little song? 2) "Ballet for a rainy day" has always reminded me of an earlier song, but I'vew never been able to put my finger on exactly which one before. The opening bars sound so... familiar. However, playing the song yesterday, I suddenly found my self humming the sixties song "Everyone's gone to the moon"! Same few opening notes, I think. Anyone else notice this? 3) Suddenly, after listening to the song for years, "Season's Cycle" really hit me as being VERY Beach Boys. I've only ever really listened to the bouncy fast chorus before, but the middle section's intricacies are a delight! 4) "Earn enough for us" also reminds me very strongly of a much earlier song, probably sixties.
