I'll pay ya for your time, and for the drink. I'm down in the dumps with an ear infection. Oh, well -- some say I look like Andy; now, if my eardrum ruptures (which we hope it won't), I'll be able to tell my children the "banging my head on the wall" story. Next time, someone should tell Andy to either sleep on the opposite side (to let the gross stuff drain the other way), or to sleep with his head on a heating pad (which will expedite the inevitable). Hello! Been fun reading the many new developments with the band; like D. Gershman, am looking forward to next Spring (?) when the new (what do we call it now? CD? album? record? how about...) XTC Masterpiece will be out and ready for ravenous consumption by all! Hard to believe its been 20 years since the XTC 3 SINGLE....you know, I think I saw one of these rare items in a used record shop here in Osaka...I'm gonna go back and check it out this week! I think it was, like, 6000 yen ($50 bucks) or something like that...I'll keep ya posted! On Thursday, October 9th, we XTC fans and Chalkies here in Osaka are going to get together for a little party, so if there are any Chalkies who just happen to be in the Osaka/Kansai, Japan area this week, be sure and e-mail either myself (mikewix@japan.co.jp) or Naoyuking (b9400863@cc.mita.keio.ac.jp) Perhaps someone will bring a camera, digital or otherwise, and we'll put them on the net (no promises here, but, you never know!) Though there is not yes, i have no doubt that that is what they were *intended* to invoke, but they hardly live up to that standard IMO - where JL and GH's solos were totally on, AP's and DG's are flat and lifeless. again i lay a lot of the blame on Gus Dudgeon, who makes this song sound more like a weak Beatles _ripoff_ (c.f. Don Was' watering-down of the eponymous Mommyheads album) instead of an excellent song in and of itself as well as a worthy tribute. AMANDA - don't they have Xerox machines in New Orleans (or in Canada, for that matter)? maybe you should look into that. and furthermore, when are you going to get it through your head that no one gives a rat's about Crash Test Dummies? because believe me, we don't. Harrison "And get that man some sodium bicarbonate" Sherwood - without resorting to cheesy acronyms, i'll just mention that i greatly enjoyed your analysis of "Bung-holio", although i still can't abide the actual song. I wasn't there (the BASTARDS didn't invite me, I was just sitting around in my crib that day, doing NOTHING!) so I ain't sure. Whichever the case may be, I'd lay serious money on it being Lennon who closes the trade-offs. And that last riff, in my humbop, says it all about rock and roll, and blows away the other two guys. Anyway, the point I was attempting to make was that was Andy P. may have been influenced by the books of Moorcock, not his music. Jon

I was listening to CH's strawberry field forever and thought of Jorge Luis Borges and one of the short stories in his Labrynths collection. It's about a French guy who decided to rewrite Cervante's Don Quixote and tries to work out how best to approach it. As for the turtles, well ! Happy Together was the second LP i had , 'please please me' being the first, and the first i bought having saved my pocket money for a couple of months. I still love it ; harmonies, humour and arrangements . Battle of the Bands is great as well as it includes Surfer Dan, Elenore, 'Buzzsaw', a killer instrumental, as well as that Gene Clark song 'you showed me' which gets you back to the Byrds (who don't get much mention here sadly). Gene Clark , together with Doug Dillard recorded my all time favourite LP, the Fantastic Expedition of Dillard & Clark, a scorcher. The Turtles had Ray Davies as producer on one album ; any good? I should be in Vienna next Wednesday so if anybody has any recommendations for places to eat/drink i'd appreciate it . enjoyed the weekend Jon *---------------------------------------------------------------- The views expressed are of the individual, and do not necessarily reflect the views of The United Bank of Kuwait PLC. *----------------------------------------------------------------

What a remarkable notion. If we pick a quiet song: "I Only Want To Say" without a doubt. Just imagine Andy singing over that lonely piano "then...I was inspired now...I'm sad and tired listen surely I've exceeded...expectations tried for three years...seems like ninety..." If we pick a loud song: "Judas' Death" Imagine Andy screaming "My God I saw him!..." and then later, going all misty and poignant for that brief heartbreaking reprise of "I Don't Know How To Love Him", his voice cracking wonderfully with the sorrow and emotion of the moment... Heck with it, *I'd* like to hear them do the whole album. BTW IMESHO YDHTAWM: only the *original* opera, featuring Ian Gillan as Jesus, should be listened to. All later versions are suspect. A weird and excellent idea. That's IDEA to you chalksters. ZAPPA CORNER: ...and to John Relph: just so long as you are not hopping into the trunk of a Gremlin, I will know all is well. It's just like A BIG ROCK SHOW.... All for knot, dave at studio seventeen

Date: Mon, 6 Oct 1997 17:04:04 +0100 Until it was mentioned, I don't think I'd ever had a Partridge fantasy in the way you lot meant it to mean. But having introduced the topic, this is the best I could do. Oh hello, Andy, nice to see you've brought Colin n' Dave. Here's 20 quid, now nip out to the offy, will you, and get some beer in. Polly Harvey and Julian Cope are also here for the evening, so get some for them whilst you're about it. We're going to watch my favourite videos and then Julian is going to talk about pagan fertility rites, so hurry up, mate, I'm gasping. Don't forget the Pringles. And no, you can't bring Dave with you.

Message-id: <01IOHBMA8H4E8X0ORV@jazz.ucc.uno.edu> I'll get to that in a minute, but first...... FS-:P TTTTTHHHHHPPPPPPTTTTTT!!!!!!! (Raspberry in your direction.) And a general plea to DROP THE DUMMYBASHING ALREADY!!!!! Jason-Well, if you want a copy of my fantasy meeting with Gregsy, you can ask mygood friend Matt Kaden.....but make sure you can stomach such extremes of mushiness first.....(this is rated TVM, R, whatever your rating is.) Fantasy meeting with Andy......browsing through the XTC section in the store and hear a heavy Swindon accent tell me to "put that God-awful crap down", whirl around, come face to face with the Great One himself and proceed to spend an afternoon at his house munching sarnies and drinking Pimms. That's good enough for me. Alright, on to my desperate plea...... Saturday night a show aired on PBS entitled "Sessions At West 54th". The featured artist was Joe Jackson, playing his new album. I was all excited because I knew Brad Roberts was going to be on, and since I hvaen't heard anything remotely Dummy-related of late, I jumped to my VCR. HOWEVER, I got the wrong time and ended up missing the first half hour of the show, which just happened to include Brad's performance. Much pillow throwing and primal screaming ensued. So this is my question... Did any of you tape the show, or did you know anyone who did? I will give ANYTHING for a copy of this show!!!!!!! I finally got my stuff from vinyl vendors. I LOVE the dance mixes of "King For a Day", and the inside picture on Skylarking. I can now see why some people thought they were dressing like schoolgirls. (Never realised Dave had such skinny legs either......) I am nowq off to order some more stuff.... Hello all believers. Sgt Rock recruited me back in 1980 and I've bought everything which I can get legally, so can anyone help me out with the demos? I'm a new recruit to chalkhills. The strange thing about following XTC all these years is that almost everyone I know has met Andy Partridge- Dentist's waiting rooms, gigs etc. You talk about fantasy meetings, the meeting I want involves the boys and a stage.. Sad but true, but if they ever toured again I would have to be a nationwide (UK) stalker. And what would I want the set list to be? Peter Pumpkinhead/ mayor of simpleton/ Grass/ meeting place/ All you pretty girls/ Great Fire/ Dear God/ Love on a Farmboy's Wages/ Earn Enough For Us/ Towers of London/ Generals and Majors/ Respectable Street/ Chalkhills & Children/ World Wrapped in Grey/Books are burning /Encores: Nigel/ Senses working overtime/ the Dissappointed I'm sure I would include some new songs, but I guess I need to wait for the demos.
