Here's a fuller version of my "notes." August 7-9 I had been putting together the drum tracks on a thing called "HammerHead" (shareware for incipient techo-DJs..strangely enough, all share/freeware of this type seems to be based in Scandavia) over a couple of days, cutting and pasting measure by measure. Eventually, I got a passable drum track with the most vanilla samples I could find. The plan for my cover is: uncover Motorhead as a secret XTC influence. August 10 6:45pm Make coffee. 7pm Fiddled with drum track, trying to transfer it to tape via patch cable. No luck. I play the track through my PC speakers and stick the microphone (Radio Shack _Universal Dynamic Some- thing_) at them while the tape rolls. (A vintage 1990 4-track.) 8pm Do bass track my sticking said microphone at my 2X15 Peavey cabinet (relic from 1970s), playing Yamaha bass. 8:10pm I realize I can't hear out of the left ear of my headphones, so I twist some pots all the way over to the left side so I can hear myself through the monitor. (Note: this detail will become very important later on.) Coffee. 8:30pm Try to set up my electric guitar (a Telecaster). I haven't played it in a few months, so I go hunting for my distorto-box and found the battery had leaked so as to make it unusable for the night's session. I patch it line-in raw, but I don't like the sound, so I wave the mic at it instead for that ambient vibe. My 30-watt amp's still not satisfying me, so I use the little Dean Markley 12 watt practice amp I've had since I was a kid. An unvarnished Tele + undistorted amp = country music, so I then decide it's gonna be a cowbilly-style cover. 9-12pm Try like hell getting guitar tracks done. Coffee. Something's not right. Coffee. 12:05pm Bed. August 11 8-8:58pm Erase previous day's work, save drum track. 8:59pm Coffee. 9pm-9:58pm Rebuild instrumental tracks one by one. 9:59pm Coffee. Spiked with cinnamon. 10pm -10:58pm Vocals. Read actual lyrics for probably the first time.Practice doing Texas-style drawl, which I steeled myself against having, being born here and all. 10:59pm Coffee. Spiked with gin. 11pm - 12pm Dinking around with guitar fills on the second track. Punch in, punch out. 12pm "Mixdown." Remember those pots I twisted in such a devil-may- care fashion yesterday? Well, what they did was specify WHICH CHANNEL EACH TRACK RECORDED ON. YES, MY WHOLE TRACK WAS ON THE LEFT SIDE, AND THE RIGHT NOTHING BUT WHISTLING SILENCE. Stunned, I sit back in my chair... 12pm - 12:10pm Gin. 12:10pm - 12:30pm Mull options...lessee, stab myself with 1/4" adapter, call Richard Pedretti-Allen at this very instant gargling the _Liebestod_ from _Tristan und Isolde_... 12:30pm - 1:00pm Quake deathmatch, while listening to Iggy and the Stooges' remixed _Raw Power_. 1:00pm The solution: Play 4-track tape through some little speakers, pointed at the by-now overused microphone, run through a boom box. 1:02pm Mixdown complete. Date: Thu, 12 Mar 1998 17:11:25 -0600 I'm sad to announce that #Buzzcity (our XTC chat room on irc.alternatech.net) is, at least for the time being, defunct. About two months ago we upgraded our Internet Server, and at that point our IRC server software stopped working. We'll probably replace it, but maybe not - #Buzzcity was the only permanent channel we had, and after the initial novelty wore off, usage pretty much dropped to zero. I blame myself though, for not setting up regularly-scheduled listening parties and hosted sessions. Still, I guess it was nice to have the channel on a mostly-unused chat server, because it nearly eliminated interference from trollers, pedophiles, and "XTC? - you mean the drug?" types. I, for one, had some wonderful chats with some very nice people. Maybe by the time the new album comes out, we'll have it back up and running again... As for other projects, I'm currently trying to create a dead-accurate vector graphic file of the "Oranges & Lemons" album cover. It seems that bitmap-tracing programs such as Adobe Streamline and CorelTrace are pretty much useless for the kind of accuracy and fully-layered editability I'm trying to achieve here - the idea being that the results would be used to create animated GIF's and a screen saver, as well as the usual T-shirt iron-ons and such. But I haven't got a lot of time on my hands these days. If anyone wants to help with it, e-mail me (jh3@netins.net) - it would entail reproducing each object in a given section of the drawing manually, in a vector illustration program, using the most efficient number of path nodes possible. Also filling in objects that are obscured by other parts of the drawing. (I've got the background and most of Andy finished already, along with about 75% of Dave's guitar.) Finally, I wanted to congratulate everyone involved in the CC97 project for doing such a great job! The results are much more polished-sounding than the first tape, though I have to admit that Marshall Armintor's rather polish-free version of "Traffic Light Rock" is probably my favorite thing on it. Just recently I had a death in my family, and I started playing The Big
Express and Mummer, and their music made me feel better. Those albums are
so great, and the music is uplifting to me at least. If I could meet the
guys I would thank them for having such great music. I don't know I would
have done if I didn't have those albums. Thank you Andy, Colin and Dave for
all of your music.

On August 7, 1997, a local (the SF Bay Area in California, US of A) free magazine called BAM featured an interview with Andy in which they discussed such things as Dear God, Upsy Daisy, Testimonial Dinner, and Xtc's future. If anyone failed to put this interview on the web, then please email me and let me know, and I'll try to put it on the web and send the link out through this mailing list. Also, I just got a Promo only 12" vinyl that says on the cardboard sleeve, Live! Warner Bros. Radio Show. It's Skylarking, with some guy interviewing Andy between every couple songs, making comments on the meanings and recording of all the songs. It's in excellent to mint condition, and has the original packaging and letter from Geffen Records advertising Skylarking. I looked through the discography on the Chalkhills site, and I couldn't find any mention of a Warner Bros. Records Show record, though I did find a reference to a record that is Skylarking with interview with Andy, but with so many versions of so many records or CDs that perhaps this isn't on the discography? I agree that there should be more XTC web sites, but having more sites probably isn't going to increase the size of their fan base. For that you need advertising, airplay, videos, etc. If people are just looking for information about the band, there's enough out there right now. (Which isn't to say there shouldn't be more.) If you ask me, the main reason there aren't more XTC web sites is because the band members themselves aren't active online. If there were a chance that by building an XTC shrine on the web, you might get an e-mail or (better yet) a handwritten note from Andy, Dave, or Colin thanking you for the effort, I suspect there would be a whole lot more sites. I don't blame them for that; it's just my opinion. (And it didn't stop *me*...) That reminds me - Bob Estus' "Roundabout" site (http://www.znet.com/~bobestus/index.htm) is TOTALLY AWESOME. Gave it a bit of a test listen and figured that it was worth exploring for the price. I wouldn't buy it without being able to hear it. I don't buy stuff JUST BECAUSE so-n-so might be on it unless it comes highly recommended from a realiable source (If there is one thing that I have learned from Robert Fripp, it is that he doesn't have the best judgement in choosing his projects, not that that would stop an unscrupulous record company from releasing the product.) Okay, Andy seems to have done a fair amount of things on this disc. In many instances, the CD reminds me of Rubber Soul / Revolver era Beatles. Andy was Producer, Engineer, did some guitar work, keyboards, string arrangements and "very clever stuff on the computer." but this particular issue (on Pipeline Records under license of Humbug Records) has Andy's name in the same huge type as Martin Newell's. It says... MARTIN NEWELL featuring the new improved ANDY PARTRIDGE Having said that (which is essentially nothing at all), what was "new and improved" about Andy in 1993? Cheers, Richard

Subject: XTC snippets
Hello fellow XTC fanatics--how is everyone? I have been reading this venue for
about two months now, and this is my first posting (I am no longer a virgin).
Everyone remembers their first time, right? Back to reality..... I agree with
a few of the postings lately that this venue should be only for the
celebration, accomplishments, and talents of the fab 3. I ignore the
negativity and the occasional bickering that I read. I subscribed to this
because I love XTC, I appreciate their talents (when are they going to get the
respect they deserve? Hopefully this year), and I can never get enough of this
band. What a band they are--people that haven't listened to them are really
missing out on a great experience. That's what I tell friends anyway. (Trying
to sell records for the boys--the best thing we can do is try to influence
people to listen to them and buy their records, not take up a collection and
send them $$$$).
Couple of quick comments. First, is it possible to find copies of the
"look look" video anywhere? Or if someone has it, do they make copies for
members? Dying to see this sometime. Also I just talked to someone across the
pond who went to an XTC convention in England. He said there were about 50
people there. 50? It was disappointing to hear that only 50 people went to a
gathering in their own country. Too bad--no respect for the lads over there
either, it seems. Are there ever any gatherings in America? If I had the
resources, I'd consider doing it. I would love to go to an XTC convention over
here. Please, if there is one, someone let me know. Thanks.
