To give you an idea of my tastes, my favorite 2 songs on the compilation

That's a hell of a range, there, Dominic... pick one! I'd go with
'English Settlement' first, though!

Greetings from Florida! Seems to me that in the last few digests,
chalkhillers are attacking other chalkhillers......wow.....the release
is a few months away....relax a little. On a lighter note, my six year
old son wanted to sing "I'm Bugged" at his school's talent show. He
said that it was his favorite song in the whole wide world. awwwwwww.
Kid's got a good ear, eh?

and for Dominic in Canada................

Welcome to the world of XTC --- Your 2 faves are "Are You Receiving Me"
and "The Ballad of Peter Pumpkinhead"? Wow.....from some early to their
latest (1992, haha). My advice to you is GET THEM ALL!! But I suppose
......if you can't buy them all at once, then go for English Settlement
first...or...just buy them in order of release. My first experience
with XTC was "Drums and Wires" (on 8-track). Hard to pick a fave when
there is not one disliked. I've been a big fan now for 18 years.

Re: Erich Sellheim's posting on Dave Gregory's exit from XTC...

Joachim (JAR Music) told me this about a week ago. Apparently Dave phoned
him up to say he had just quit the band and wasn't sure what he was going
to do in future. From what Joachim said it seemed to be down to "stuff"
with Andy Partridge, including something about not liking AP's increasing
desire to use computers in XTC's music... although on that last point I
might have misunderstood what Joachim was saying. Consequently this could
all be a strange linguisitic misunderstanding which I'm only fuelling by
sending this note. I'm sure Dave will clarify things when he's ready.

This is an unashamed advertisement for a new website called SwindonWeb
at:

   www.swindonweb.com

SwindonWeb is a brand new site covering anything and everything to do
with Swindon. XTC are naturally included in our Hall of Fame, and in a
section called The Swindon Connection:

Click on 'New" at the bottom of the front page and follow the links
to XTC.

You can get some background info on XTC's home town and learn some more
about related topics like Uffington White Horse etc.

SwindonWeb is a brand new venture, and I would be grateful for any
comments.

RRRRRResponse time!

Steven-I think it's so cool that on "Living Through Another Cuba", Andy
sings "If we get through this lot alright we're do for replay 1998.", and
like, their new album is like coming out in like 1998. :)

Misty-Hmmm...Gonna have to go back and watch :Nigel" again, even though
Gregsy isn't featured prominantly in it.

Dominic-and the easiest answer to your question is...buy the lot! But em
all! But I suggest for the mostly uninitiated, Oranges & Lemons is a good
place to start. It's the perfect amalgamation of XTC's many sounds.

Tis all for now!

Sadly the rumor is true. Andy has asked me to say the following: Dave has
left the band. The reason he left is because he felt like he wasn't
contributing enough to the band's music. There was a lot of tension between
he and Andy because of this and Dave became very negative during the
sessions so he decided to leave. The band is not breaking up. The album is
going forward as planned and Dave's playing will be on it.

That's about all I can say at the moment other than I'm sorry to have to
confirm this news.

Dear Chalkers,

Edward Percival worried about XTC not being able to play on the Later
With Jools Holland TV show :
> don't think they will get on here unless the dispute with Difford
> over money is resolved amicably. Why? Because Jools Holland was of
> course the keyboard player and remains a firm friend of Squeeze.
First of all I agree wholeheartedly with you that this program would
indeed be _the_ perfect platform for our Heroes.
But I don't think you should worry too much: Jools Holland also
toured extensively with XTC 'way back' so i think they do know each
other quite well.

And a couple of issues back somebody (Peter?) reported how XTC are
talking about appearing on a special edition of a 'major TV show'.
My guess is that they're talking about "Later..." or The Late Show.
If this does go ahead I'd be in 7th heaven; both shows are of a high
standard and would probably do a great job.

Then Amanda said something about the cover of the new Japanese CD
featuring a picture of a rather cute looking, long-haired Dave G.

> Mark - Yeeeeeeeouch! Beautiful picture! Just when I'm getting ready to
> go to bed I have to see that. Well I'll certainly be having pleasant
> dreams tonight!

I just knew you'd like it, dear...
Just remember to send me an invitation for the wedding :)

But then Erich Selheim (Erich, my email to you gets bounced back)
came and spoiled all our fun :

> sorry for probably spoiling your day, but I've just received the
> latest newsletter by German record label Jarmusic, and it said
> that Dave Gregory is leaving XTC
Could this be the real reason why Mike Batt did all the arrangements
??? Welll, if it's true - and it could be; remember how Dave
hinted that this might happen - it's the end of XTC as we know it...
But then again: why should he leave? It's not like XTC takes up a
huge amount of his time or that he can't do anything else on the side

BTW: if he does decide to leave i suggest we all put the blame on
Amanda - the Yoko that broke up XTC :)

I'm positive that the digest this post appears in will probably be joined
by at least 25 similar messages, but words can't express how dismayed I was
to discover that Dave Gregory is leaving XTC... He's such an integral part
of the band now that I can't imagine XTC without him... The statement that
he doesn't feel that he's contributing enough to the band's music also
strikes me as odd... While I hope that Dave reconsiders, I do wish him the
best in any future projects in which he's involved... You'll be sorely

AP, contributing to duffy's release, was described in one paper as the

A request ; would anybody out there able to tell me about duffy, what to

Having suspected the worst for a few weeks - Andy's description of the
album as the most difficult XTC have ever made, Dave's sudden silence
via Mitch or whoever, his complete absence from Peter Fitzpatrick's
studio report (not even a hint as to where he might be) - I can't say I'm
surprised to read on Chalkhills that Dave has left the band.

It's too sad - nearly twenty years in a band, the last five of which have
been an enforced silence, and Dave leaves just as the new album is
nearing completion and release. I hope it's an amicable split, I hope it's not
permanent, and I hope the decision makes Dave happy. We should all
wish him luck.

One thing - those of you on the list who've known about this and kept
quiet, would you mind letting the rest of us know what's been going on?

Subject: Well, strike me senseless!

A mate and i were both talking about our collections of bad 80's
sheet music recently. He liked the fact i had the sheet music for
"Hungry like the wolf" and "Life in a northern town", and i was
impressed that someone would even own up to having "The Riddle" and
"Doctor! Doctor!" We made plans to compare collections last
Saturday and play through them and see who had the worst stuff.

I was worried that someone who owned a Complete Howard Jones
songbook might have some real dodgy rubbish, but his collection
turned out to be really good. We jammed for ages on songs like "She
Bop", "View to a kill" and "Raspberry beret" and were gradually
working through the books. I'd just finished a vampish "Like a
virgin" that scared away the neighbourhood cats, when my eye fell on
the next book in the pile: "Virgin Megahits".

I flipped through, groaning in recognition. "The look of love",
"Sign your name", "Everybody wants to rule the world", "Karma
Chameleon", "Senses working overtime", "Sonic boom boy" etc.

Duh! My brain registered what i'd just flipped past. A big full
page blurb on XTC, then the sheet music for "Senses working
overtime"! I was so speechless i didn't even notice my mate playing
"Walk like an egyptian".

XTC sheet music! My brain was reeling in shock. I slammed the book
down. "Forget the Bangles, we're playing this".

"Who's xtc?"

Hmm, where to start? I wanted to say they were the most interesting
intelligent consistent band i've ever heard who challenged my
ideas about music and opened my horizons up to a whole spectrum of
more exciting and demanding music than i'd ever though possible and
that was why i wasn't still listening to my old Dead or Alive albums
ten years later.

What i actually said: "They're really great".

So we start playing. "Are you sure this is right? It sounds weird."

I tell him it's all right and will make more sense once i start doing
my Andy impersonation on the vocals.

They've simplified the music a lot - the bass especially, but still,
it was odd enough for him to ask if it was wrong. "But those notes
aren't even in that key".

"Yeah, isn't it great?"

I'm singing my guts out now, having a ball, tripping over the chords
- i know how the song goes and it STILL confuses me. What weird
ideas in the music? How did Andy write this??? I stomp out the
12345's... i croon the do do do do's, i even do the "England's
glory!" parts.

We reach the end and as the last chord dies out i just swoon. I turn
to him to say that was really bloody exciting. Before i can he picks
up the next book and says "Well that was weird. Oooh, Kylie Minogue".

Oh well, i'm hoping you'll all understand...

BTW, For all those who are still wondering, the "All the world is
football shaped" is denoted in the sheet music as the "MIDDLE
SECTION". The "And birds might fall..." bit is the BRIDGE.

ONE LAST SAD PLEA:
If anyone owns a copy of the 1987 Westworld album "Where the
action is" on CD they're willing to trade, get in touch.

What do you mean, Dave Gregory quit the band? We just get a two line
announcement? Please say there is more news on the way!

I don't know how much more of this darkness I can take.

Why does this kind of shit have to happen all the time? I mean, I have
hung on for 6 years, like a thirsty man waiting for a cool drink of
water only to have it turn out to be a mirage! I am really upset.

I hope that we get some sort of message or something. How can a band(?)
go on like this and not have their spirits totally crushed into little
shards? I know mine is.

How do you quit the band when they really don't have a band. So Dave
Gregory has stopped collaborating with Andy Partridge and Colin
Moulding. XTC is a name and a spirit I guess instead of a band.

If I am not making any sense, it's because neither does this new bit of
information.
I am sorry I am babbling, the shock is starting to set in.

How about a little more info around here! This is the official
sight....let's get some damned official news!

>I settled down to enjoy 'Later with Jools Holland'- the UKs only quality

>made of and promote the new album. But an awful though struck me. I
don't
Not only is Later the "only quality live music show" I think it's actually
the only "live music show".

As far as I am aware (and I'm sure I will be put right on the matter), Mr
Holland is a fairly good mate of Mssrs Gregory, Moulding and Partridge
(well I'm tired of Mr P ALWAYS being the 1st name out of the hat).

Hence the video for The Meeting Place (as far as my poor memory serves) was
filmed in Portmerrion (of the Prisoner fame), for a Jools Holland BBC
special, though personally it would have been more suited to a Dukes video.

The strange thing is that one programme by the BBC that may have suited the
band before recording even started was Video Nation (explination for non UK
readers will follow), as they could have made a pretty interesting
documentry from their own viewpoint, and had some of the BBC production
facilitys available to them (may have got them enough equipment together to
produce some sort of promo video together on their budget).

Video Nation explination:

The BBC (Dog <sic> bless em), have a Community/Education branch that lends
professional quality video equipment to (potentially) interesting members
of the public to document a year of their lives.

I'm not sure wether they are paid or not but it would be interesting to see
a XTC at the Manor or Play at Home completely from the bands perspective
(and Diffords face when the husk of a recording studio was shown and
followed by him attempting to charge for it).

The trials and tribulations from raising the capital to fial release would
be truely interesting (and give a little of the much needed exposure too).

>think they will get on here unless the dispute with Difford over money is
>resolved amicably. Why? Because Jools Holland was of course the keyboard
>player and remains a firm friend of Squeeze. The money must be paid!!
Friends are friends, but as Jools is the producer of the show, money is
also money (as Chris Difford or rather his brother inlaw) proved), and if
it is commercially wise for Jools to have XTC on the show then I really
don't think the Difford question would come into it.

Anyway on the matter of moving images what are the promotional plans,
videos are ridiculously expensive, and to be honest I have only ever seen
three or four promos that have enhanced the tracks they are attached to.

Anyway I was wondering considering there are a couple of individuals out
there attached to companys with serious CGI rendering hardware/software,
possibly their employers could be persuaided to donate some time on a
render farm to a worthy cause ?

(well it's worth a try anyway)

Love 'N Hisses Rob...

Anyway those tracks are:

Arnold Layne & See Emily Play. : Floyd
Don't come around here no more. : Tom Petty

Chalkdusters,

<<After a few minutes I pulled out a copy of Chalkhills Children 97 (on CD)...
I handed one to Colin who was (as I expected...) very quiet and reserved.>>
...snippety doo dah...
<<"Down A Peg ? ? ? " he says with a smile. "I dont' suppose you've got
something I can play this on ? I'm really curious to hear this".
Of course I don't, and it's not like we're about to waste hundreds of pounds
of valuable XTC recording time to listen to that when there's an orchestra
outside going through "GREEN MAN".>>

A note to Peter and Richard: should this situation arise again, you are hereby
authorized to nip out and purchase a discman for Colin, and to send me the
bill.

I am kinda bummed I didn't make the CC98 list, but, hey, I've had two shots at
it. How selfish can I be? I look forward to hearing CC98, and you who made
the list, be careful: you never know who'll be listening.

Someone I used to know introduced me to XTC not too long ago. The first
song I heard of theirs was "Dear God". This same person also recommended I
listen to WLIR (92.3) in New York.

I listen to this station all the time, at work and at home. So, today while
working late on a miserable Monday, with no end to my day in sight, I hear a
familiar song - yes, "Dear God". It's the first XTC song I've heard on this
station since I started listening to it. Needless to say, this song is
somewhat sentimental as it was the start of something good and I was
thrilled to hear it. Thankfully, no one was around when I turned the volume
up as loud as it could go!!!!!!

It made a miserable Monday a bit less miserable!!!!! Let's hope they play
more and more XTC!!!!!!

FYI "chuffed" is British for "stoked" or simply "thrilled". Might as well
clear up little confusions lest false impressions be formed. Dave.

Hi,
They just blew up the Aladdin Hotel here in fabulous Las Vegas. My best
memory was playing pre-gig roulette with Martin Chambers (drummer for the
Pretenders). He was surprised that any one knew who he was. Elvis and
Pricilla were married in the Aladdin.
Somewhat chuffed,
Wes

um, xtc content, Dave leaving wasn't truly a surprise.

The man Partridge wrote "Bumper Cars" for is leaving? Why now?
Get together once every six years to record an album - not
a major time-suck there. Tour with Aimee Mann and guest on
other people's albums - okay - so, that's one way to
get out in public. But to record his own music? What's been
keeping him from doing that until now? And especially now,
when they just got some semblance of control on their destiny
with Idea/Cooking Vinyl. They could conceivably tour, sell more
records and _make_ money now - as opposed to the day when they
toured and _owed_ money to Virgin or some vile, crooked manager.

Maybe it's a gambit to get Andy to cede some control, or at
least tour - which would help three men and their families
(at least A.P.'s got to pay child support, right?)
put some more cake in the bank. Geez - I don't think Dave's
timing is the best, but if that's what he really wants -
I'll certainly buy his product.

Hi there everyone,

I know you are all in a bit of shock and feeling a bit depressed about
Dave's departure. Believe me, I'm not happy about it either. It's a shame.

You all know that there is more to the story. I am in the unfortunate and
somewhat tricky place of being friendly with both Andy and Dave. I am sure
you all have questions and concerns about this which you'd like me to answer
or elaborate on. I ask that you consider my position and don't put me in an
even more uncomfortable spot by expecting me to be the one who explains it
further. I think it's more appropriate to wait for Andy and/or Dave to do
that in the near future.

Thanks,
Mitch
