After listening to Andy's '95 Demo Tape for three years, I don't think the songs on AV1 hold a candle to the genius he displayed on the aforementioned tape. I find the songs on AV1 very overproduced and sorta like the muzak/elevator- music version of the songs on the tape. Personally, I think the songs on the '95 demo tape were in their most pristine, perfect form and shouldn't have been tinkered with. I know this is heresy and sacrilegious, but I had to be true to myself and my feelings on this one. I must say, however, that I am looking forward to AV2. I invite all comments and ridicule. - Dave in San Francisco P.S. I find the melodrama on Chalkhills regarding AV1 quite hilarious. Did someone actually say he/she cried when he/she first listened to it?

"Eight words the Wiccan Rede fulfill: If it harm none, do as you will". I stared at the back of the CD for a long time this afternoon as I sat in the car outside the record shop. It was so fitting, so perfect, to see those words there. I knew in my heart (and from the lyrics to songs such as "Greenman") that Andy Partridge, as a songwriter at least, was possessed of certain pagan sensibilities, despite (or perhaps in accordance with) what he has said in the past about religion in general. But it was certainly an epiphany for me to see something so... I dunno...dogmatic? (that's not the right word, but I'm at a loss.. "direct", I guess) printed on the CD case. I'm delighted, personally, being wiccan myself. It lends further and deeper meaning to the already rich and gorgeous songs for me. I've only heard the demos and the snippets from the web so far; I won't be playing the actual CD until this weekend, when I've arranged a private listening party with my beloved (hi, John love!). (Actually bought 3 copies, but I digress). Traffic was HORRIBLE! Right after Andy sang "push your car from the road . . ." the guy I carpool with said, "sounds like a damn good idea to me right about now." What's usually about a 20 minute commute stretched out to about 1 and a half hours! Enough time to listen to AV1 a few times and form a few preliminary opinions . . .Molly and others can page down if you please. Having heard the demos I was very impressed with how River of Orchids, Easter Theatre, Greenman and I Can't Own Her turned out--the vocals sound much richer and the orchestra adds a definite dimension that wasn't on the demos . . .kind of like watching TV on a scratchy old B&W set then suddenly seeing the same program in 70mm Panavision. Personally, I think Colin's AV1 contributions are WAY better than his songs on Nonsuch. "Frivolous" grabbed me on the first listen, "Fruit Nut" took a little more time but is damned catchy. Production-wise this album also blows the last couple away as far as mixing and mastering . . .definitely the most "thematically complete" album since Skylarking, by that I mean the entire album has a feel,mood and flow to it so that one song flows seamlessly to the next. Hats off to Andy, Colin, Dave, Prairie, Haydn, Nick and everyone else involved for a job well done. Looking forward to other chalk-comments! Chalksters and Chalkettes; I will start with a warning: if you don't want to hear about Andy and Colin being in NYC last night, or if you don't have AV1 yet, or if you think you'll get disturbed because I'm going to tell you how happy I am, then PAGE DOWN!! There, that's better, now I can continue. I was one of probably 250 people standing on line in the windy, 20 degree New York City weather last night waiting to see and talk to our heroes. Since the signing was scheduled to start at 6 pm, I got there at about 4:30, went inside and bought my copy of AV1 (list price $17.98, on sale for $13.98) and went back outside as per the store's policy for signings and got on line; there were about 30 people ahead of me at this point. To pass the time, I chatted with those near me and it was an interesting mix of fans. The guy behind me didn't know about Dave's leaving or even the Virgin strike, so he was a bundle of questions. In front of me was a very knowledgeable guy who turned out to be Tom Chao, a former member of this list and a journalist. I believe that a "quiz" on the Chalkhills archives was written by Tom. He hasn't been on Chalkhills for a few years, but he remembered a few names. In fact, he asked if I was Harrison Sherwood. I assured him that I was not but that I would pass on his good wishes. I also spoke with listmember Stephanie Takeshita, who ventured down the street to the TVT offices to see if the boys were holed up there, but to no avail. She said that she had encountered some other list members on the line but I didn't have a chance to roam and find others. We found out that Andy and Colin had been on WNEW-FM with Vin Scelsa on Sunday night, and I missed it! I didn't hear about it in time. I want a tape of the show; can anyone help me with this? Andy and Colin got there a little late (about 6:10) and immediately went to another area of the store and disappeared for a while. They reappeared with a small TVT entourage and the signing began about 6:40 or so. The problem with this was that we were all still outside and freezing. I got into the store about 7:00 and finally got up near Andy and Colin about 7:15. I noticed that they seemed happy and enjoying each other's company greatly as they bantered about some quiet thought they shared. Also, AV1 was playing on the in-store sound system. The person immediately in front of me, Tom Chao's friend, shook hands with Colin so hard that Colin visibly winced and stared at this guy as he walked away. So then it was my turn! I spent my precious moments telling them how much their music had meant to me over the years and they seemed genuinely pleased. I told them that they ranked right up there with the Beatles and Kinks and Andy said, "That's high praise, indeed." I also thanked them for doing the autograph tour and then I moved on to let some other happy souls have their turn. I wasn't able to stick around and join other Chalksters in an after-hours celebration because I had another commitment, but I must assure you that it was a great way to spend my birthday. I now am the proud owner of an autographed copy of "Song Stories" as well as the "real" AV1 release. What a great album!! Before I close, I suggest that you listen closely to Colin's bass playing on "Greenman". It is fantastic. I don't mean to get into another long debate over the best bass players in the world, but this piece reveals his technique to be tasty and melodic. Got to go now, Mike

As "I'd Like That" boomed from the kitchen...uh, boom box, in the co-op I used to live at, a house member who was reclining on the couch in the living room offered, "that's some shitty music you're listening to there." My response was an enthusiastic, "Thanks!!" Upon finding that THIS was XTC's new album, he added, "how the mighty fall hard." Ouch. Of course, this was the guy who chastised me for being a big R.E.M. fan and not owning a single Wire album, so I decided to ignore his opinion. That said, AV1 is definitely not for everyone, but, well, I like that. A few things struck me as I was listening to it (alone): 1) I'm not upset that I heard most of these songs in demo form already. Sure, it takes some of the surprise away, but you feel like you've been a friend of these songs for years and it's nice to finally see them on a released record. 2) I think most of my favorites are either on AV2 or will not be recorded. This is unfortunate, but in light of that... 3) Some of the songs I didn't really care for before are growing on me now, like "I'd Like That". Always thought that was a bit of fluff, but in the context of the album it's a bit of fluff that makes sense as the second song. The ending of the demo was better though. I like the high harmonies he did in the demo at the end, the "iiiiiiiiii'd liiiiiiiike thaaaaaaaaat..." (and the bass playing was better !) 4) "I Can't Own Her" has a LOT more dynamic now. The demo was a wash of drippy sentimentality, and I was glad to hear it tightened up a little. 5) "Fruit Nut" is really nice. I have to listen to that and "Frivolous Tonight" (which I don't like as much yet) a bit more. 6) I was glad that "River of Orchids" was left pretty much unchanged save for the gradual intro and the pile-up at the end. His vocals sound good all over the stereo picture. 7) The repeated last chorus of "Easter Theatre" has an acoustic guitar that I don't remember hearing in the demo and is eerily similar to the part I played on my cover of "Easter Theatre" on CC97. Could he have...? 8) Volumes one and two shouldn't have been one album, but it would have been nice to have both of them at the same time, because this album definitely feels like there's another part to it. It leaves me wanting more. 9) Ben, the feather sparkles. All in all, an album with a nice summery feel, kind of like "Skylarking" in that regard (thanks, Prairie!). I'm glad Andy realizes now that albums don't have to have 17 songs to be good! WHOA! I've never had a peice of music do that to me. also, bare it in
mind this is a second, if not third generation tape. ie the sound
quality is really bad. Okay, when I heard it off a cover CD my dad
brought home I was amazed to hear new material and yeah I did feel kinda
warm an' fuzzy inside. but hey, It's just what I think. and I really
like 'your dictionary'

I got them from the links Mark or some one wonderful person put on these very listings for all of us to download and copy. I printed all 12 pages of them out and put them in the lovely huge album folder. Having said that this album is the easiest for to pick up and understand clearly the lyrics! Did my two copies I bought direct from the Cooking Vinyl's offices in Acton W3 count towards the position of the guys in the charts? Do I have to buy two more from WH Smiths or something? But I'm broke! I am here to tell you that in my humble opinion (and I preferred to spell that out in full!) my appreciation of the album was not in anyway ruined by having heard the demos. Like licking the icing from the bowl then being presented with the cake and the extra cherries on top - like being allowed to ride your Dad's scooter when you were a teenager then being able to buy a big proper motorbike for yourself. This went for having got the Nonsuch and various other demos in the past too before the album proper came out. I can understand AP's anxiety about this but he is to be pacified. Thanks by the way to the person who prefers to be anonymous who kindly sent me the demos for AV1 and 2. I did appreciate it. Who is the person and what does he do and what are his contacts whereby he can casually write to us that he happened to have dinner with AP in Bourbon Street New Orleans without ANY explanation of how that came about! It is fun to read all the pleas for lifts and meeting ideas for the mad dash across USA. I do wish you all well and hope you all meet up with each other and have lots of fun! I have never seen Space Ghost and to my knowledge we do not get it in UK. (Do we? Any obscure Cable Channel?) If they appear on Letterman again can we be told immediately as some of us get that on Cable here the night after USA sees it. That's it for now! The main difference, as per your argument, is that musically the presenters wouldn't know diamonds from dog turds. I'll keep the rest of my points about Triple J to email.
