I thought the stumpy sweaty (hairy) one was leaving the UK if Labour came to power, I'd even pay for the ticket. Anyway, Paul Hogan had a character called Leo Wanker (but then that's Austrailian humour for you). John Wayne uttered the word bollocks in one of his films, it was actually pronounced 'ballicks', which if anybody has visited the North of Ireland they will hear that pronnounciation. I have the vision of a (Northern) Irish born member of the film crew laughing his balls off at Big John, ad-libbing using a phrase he has heard on set (the phrase was "your bollocks"). Although I have enjoyed hearing Andy and Colin's demos before the final album versions, I too have noticed the all too frequent lack of differentiation between the demo and the final version. Messrs.. Partridge and Moulding appear to be too good at crafting their musical visions in demo form, applying only minor musical nuances and the polish of the recording studio to the final version. Which leaves us to ponder: Apart from songs that haven't been officially recorded, what appeal would a CD of XTC demos have for the non-rabid fan? And would the existing fan base (that has to have everything) be sufficient to make such an effort profitable for the band, Idea, Cooking Vinyl, and TVT? Not to say that I wouldn't run out and snap it up if it were released (since I certainly don't have all the demos), but has Andy or Colin ever produced a demo that went through major revisions in the studio and emerged substantially different from it's original idea?! An example might be to compare the progression of "Strawberry Fields" on the Beatles' Anthology series to the demo and final version of "Peter Pumpkinhead". Perhaps a CD of XTC studio outtakes would be more revealing. Is the true enjoyment of a demo the ability to trace the musical evolution and creative birthing of a song rather than listen to the musical equivalent of a pencil sketch verses its full color rendering? - John

Hi, my name is Steven and this is my first posting to Chalkhills. Here's a question I've had for years and I think a Chalkhill member may be able to help me. Former XTC drummer Terry Chambers played in a group called Random Hold at one point. I think he joined after English Settlement following his departure from XTC. All I know about Random Hold is I think they are English and they must have been recording around the late 70s early 80s. Also, Peter Gabriel's guitarist David Rhodes played in Random Hold at one point. On Gabriel's third solo album (Rhodes' first) Rhodes is listed as "courtesey of Random Hold." Anyway, here's my questions: Who played in Random Hold? How many albums did they record and is there anything available on CD right now? What kind of music was it? If anyone out there has ANY information (bio or otherwise) on Random Hold, I sure would appreciate if you email me or post it on the list. With players from XTC and Peter Gabriel's band, the music must have been interesting to say the least. Thank you very much, Adios, Steven
