Well, it was just announced here that an 'X.T.C.' nail polish has been spotted (to go with the XTC drink). To further the spread of the name of the best band the world has ever known, the Giant Bicycle company has 4 mountain bikes in their XtC line. (Note: the reversed typography on the bikes name viz a viz the band's. Coincidence, or part of the unexplained?) There's the hard-tail XtC SE1 and SE2. (The SE1, btw, was just named 'Mountain Bike of the Year' by Mountain Biking magazine - and I can see why as it's quite nicely spec'ed for just $1225 US.) And, the hardtails are complemented with two full-suspension rigs, the DS1 and DS2. and translAteds it from Spanish to English. The result? See for
yourself:
Excusadme to speak in espanol. It saddens to me to have to do this, but
it is the unica revenge to which I can choose. It makes 5 or 6 months
envie pieces of XTC to JIM ZITTEL in exchange for others. Since then I
have received about 3 or 4 messages of Jim pidiendome excuses by the
delay. To the day of today I have not received the material that me
prometio and either receipt but messages of excuse. If somebody wants

I'd already bought 11 XTC albums and two 12" singles (for a total of $61, although I didn't get any of the CD bonus tracks) since August '96. Apple Venus cost me $10 (on cassette), which was $4 more than any other XTC album. The main thing I notice, thinking about this album compared to other albums, is that Partridge's songwriting seems to have gotten more mature and sophisticated and restrained and all that sort of stuff, and Moulding's has gotten more juvenile and silly. Well, I know that, but this is my first post, so bear with me, please.
I would like to comment on a few of the issues floating arond the chalkhill:
I met Andy, Colin and Dave when they were here in Austin for their
Oranges and Lemons release interview at Waterloo records, got Andy to sign
a copy for my friend who was in jail at the time for too many traffic
tickets. He wrote" file for me" on the album!!! great sense of humour,
man!! they were all very nice to me, no complaints about that. I also have
a tape of their interview/performance on KGSR radio that day.
AV1 is good, but it aint no Skylarking, folks. I love River of Orchids,
Greenman, and Your Dictionary stikes a special chord in my heart since I
just went through a divorce myself. I know what you mean Andy, I'm all
there with you... has anybody noticed the resemblence to the piano in the
Beatles' "Piggies" there?
A word on the mythological aspects of "Easter theater": The line about "
now the son has died, the father can be born" reminds me of something. I
study anthropology, especially Maya studies, at the University of Texas.
There are myths from Classic Maya times ( 200-900a.d) about the death and
birth of the Maize God. His sons, called the "Hero Twins" had to die a
sacrificial death so their father could be born again as the sustenance for
the Maya people. This theme of the "recycling " of father and son in
relation to maize is the basis of Maya mythology ( did you know that, Mr
Partridge?). This is one of the topics of my thesis, so I found it
interesting in the XTC context. And ya'll thought you had seen XTC
everywhere!!!
On the Sgt Pepper topic, I have to HONESTLY say that the albums that made
me who I am today were "Black Sea" and "More songs about buildings and
food", by the Talking Heads (my favorite band, with XTC a close second). I
remember high school parties in Mexico City in which we would dance
endlessly to "Living through another Cuba", and "Respectable Street". If I
could have the boys perform for me live in my living room, those would be
the songs...
I guess I have given away my age by saying this, but I am glad that I am
a fan still of the band that helped change my life. I sure hope they do the
flatbed truck tour of the USA, I'll travel for that!!!
Let's have another Austin XTC drinking convention, shall we Jill? I
couldn't make the one over SXSW. I was busy making plans to go see Fripp's
Projeckt Three.

This past christmas, while shopping at Marshalls (a cheap, discount
clothing store), I was perusing the sweaters when I heard on their speakers
what was undoubtedly Andy Partridge's voice. I stopped and listened and it

was a very strange experience

Try this: beginning with the second woodwind phrase, go taptap-tap-tap-tap-tap- tap-tap...Our taps should line up with the drums when they come in. It feels like we're tapping upbeats(2nd part of the beat), but they're actually downbeats. For next week, read chapters 34 through 38, when we'll be discussing how to juggle 3 running chainsaws while doing the Twist and simultaneously singing all 29 verses of "She Got the Goldmine(I Got the Shaft)". Well Y'all I'm sad to say, but me ears have worn thin with AV1- hey
hey now... don't get me wrong, loved it from the get-go, but I know
my limits and before I burn out on it better to move on...so I went
over to my friend Tommys today and started recording Transisitor
Blaster- I have been unemployed for some time now, hence no kala ($
in Hawaiian) and various other XTC treasures that I somehow lost
along the way. Sorry to see David Oh go-hurry back. IMHO I think we
can dispense with the Sgt.Pepe's theme, mine was so long ago I'm
trying to remember Which time What album REAllY blew my mind. Though
it is nice to here refreshing talk about music that really mattered
to you at a time. A couple people mentioned 'Talk Talk' and I was
wondering if they'd ever heard of "Spirit of Eded"- a beautifully
layered and very dark album, I had heard that it was due to a band
members death..Any comments? Mary Beth- Orange,Green and White are
lovely nail colors (at least now). As for the tit-a-tat stuff, I think
Kurt Vonnegut put it best "what the world could use more of is a

I don't know John Gardner's situation, but in what sense does he *need* a car? The car creates its own demand. You need it to travel a greater distance to reach the out-of-town supermarkets that wouldn't have existed were it not for the car. You need it to live further and further from your neighbours, and then wonder why there's no sense of community any more. Were once you would have sent 15 minutes walking to the shops, you now send 30 minutes driving there. And you call it freedom. The other day I overheard someone saying that she *needed* her mobile phone. These things didn't even exist until a couple of years ago. Now she needs it. It's fascinating to see how a want or a desire so quickly becomes a need. It's exactly the same with the car. People are unprepared to let go of their shiny and expensive toys even when they can see it is for the greater good. Everyone go and look at the street outside. Me too, even though I discovered it about five years too late. All the
classic punk albums (and if you don't know them, you don't deserve to)
became firm favourites with me, but sadly not my Dad (a die-hard Gilbert &
Sullivan fan) who spent most of the 80s sighing loudly and closing doors
behind him in a "you & your pop music" kind of way. When I brought home
"Never Mind The Bollocks", my parents' both looked mortified. Likewise my
first Iron Maiden album, my first Jesus & Mary Chain record (blasphemy!!!)
and the first Napalm Death album ("...and you call this music, do you?"). By
the time I reached sixteen my parents had given up altogether. I managed to
get my Mum into The Smiths, The Cure and XTC, but that's about as far as I
got. I tried with the Dead Kennedys, but I think "I Kill Children" might
have upset her somewhat. Funny that....
...but the amount of stuff I got into via punk is incalculable. Apart from
the obvious things like PiL, Gang Of Four, Joy Division etc there's so much
stuff that I definitely would have missed out on had I not delved into our
punkular musical past. Swans, Foetus, Nick Cave, Godflesh, Digital Hardcore,
grindcore, Death Metal, noise, gabba etc etc etc - it all stems from hearing
a few shouty, three-chord anthems at an early age. And don't you just love
those Ramones? "It's Alive" kicks the saggy arse of any live album I've ever
heard (except "Live Seeds", natch).
My love of XTC, on the other hand, comes mainly from seeing them perform
"Sgt Rock" on TOTP in, I presume, 1980. Not sure why it had such an effect,
but along with (blush) Tenpole Tudor and Adam Ant, XTC gave me a sense of
being an individual for the first time, as after a while my school "friends"
were all into either Duran Duran or Spindly Ballet (and to think punk & new
wave ended up sounding like that....I could spit!). Being unpopular is
character building you know......sob.

Maybe they'll all go wild at the blue light discos to the sounds of "River of orchards". Anyway, here it is.
