The Daily Telegraph's TV supplement has 'Andy Partridge of XTC' down as one
of the guests on Never Mind the Buzzcocks (BBC2 9.30pm, Monday 5th) along
with Chrissie Hynde, Tony Hadley and Josie Lawrence. Unfortunately, both
the Radio Times and the BBC website reckon Bobby Davro, rather than AP, is
the other guest. Probably is too...ho-hum

Right, I've kind of asked this before but I don't think I got a response. I
have a copy of the Nonesuch demos, and there is a Moulding composition that
I don't know the name of and I can't find in the archives. Does anyone
recognise the following? Can you put me out of my misery? What's the song
called?

"Am I on a trip to nowhere
Madcap taxi on fire (?)
Got no brakes, got no signposts
Waiting for the big bump
And it's getting too late to jump
Look out, car out of control
Look out, man out of control"

Is there anyone among us Chalkids who became turned on to XTC because they
liked one of the artists who performed on Testimonial Dinner, bought the
album, and then wanted to hear more XTC?

I read, in Digest 2-11, an excerpt of David Yazbek's liner notes in which
he welcomes/encourages such folks; it would be neat to know that at least
one of us became an XTC fan in this manner. If you don't want to de-lurk,
email me privately.

Hoping to satisfy my curiosity,

I saw a video on public access cable once by a band called Seagulls
Screaming Kiss Her Kiss Her. Seeing the name I was intrigued enough to
watch it. They were a Japanese female trio, and aside from the name, I
could discern no XTC similarities. They played ragged "alternative" rock
with a fair amount of dissonance and distortion. Not offensive, but also
not as interesting as their name. Sort of along the Sonic Youth lines,
but not a huge lot.
A little searching turned up the following references:

"cute Japanese pop")

Dear Belinda - Enjoyed your ruminations on the
(motor)cycle. The bit about cyclists not being in
therapy is great, bet the book you mentioned is
interesting. As a former (motor)cyclist, and now a
(human-powered)cyclist, I can safely say that both are
exhilarating, and yes, wonderful therapy in this crazy
world. One advantage you guys have though is
solidarity. I used to love how most bikers wave at

some reason, boo hoo.

Back when I should've been a punk teen like many here, I was
listening to big-band music and show tunes thanks to WNEW-AM
in New York. (Now *that's* alienated!) That station is gone,
and its successor WQEW has been replaced by Radio Disney.

So it was some interest I read about how the latest Gap ads
don't have those jitterbuggers in khaki, in an article with
two of my fave subjects: Social/marketing/advert crit and
XTC relevance. For example,

"The most remarkable thing about the New Swing is how
untransformed it is by contemporary experience, how
unreflective it is of anyone's real life. Those who have
adopted it have done so wholesale, resolutely determined not
to make it their own; the New Swing's allure is how it never
threatens to reveal the feelings or values of the times. The
New Swing doesn't have even the honesty of vulgar nostalgia.
If people were actually sitting around playing Duke
Ellington's Blanton-Webster records, that would be one thing...

"If there are still examples of true oddball genius out there...
they don't exist as part of the mass culture anymore, at the
intersection of vision and Zeitgeist. They struggle for oxygen
somewhere off to the side, because more and more a '90s
media-culture that "swings" has no room for such visions; both
the culture and the media are now almost completely about affect."

Quite arguably. I would say that Brian Wilson preceded the Beatles in
that respect. Today!, Pet Sounds, and Good Vibrations were a lot more
than just a record of a performance. In fact, "treating the magnetic tape
itself as a canvas" is a perfect description of Brian's production of Good
Vibrations, if we can also insert "and the studio" after "magnetic tape".

I think Sgt. Pepper's place in the cultural pantheon should be secure, but
I don't believe it's revisionist history to suggest that it wasn't such a
pioneering work in terms of engineering and production and even
arrangement. What it is is a great album, one that I think hangs together
much better than Pet Sounds, even though I think that the production and
arrangement of the individual songs are much better on the latter. For
that matter, "Wouldn't It Be Nice?" and "God Only Knows" blow much of Sgt.
Pepper's, if not all of it, out of the water in terms of songwriting.

Dear Chalkers,

Recently there has been some discussion here if the design of the
original Go 2 cassette release just replicated the text found on the
album cover or not.

Well, you asked for it so here's the full text:

"THIS IS THE CASSETTE INLAY CARD FOR XTC'S GO 2. NORMALLY A COLOUR
REPRODUCTION OF THE FRONT COVER OF THE ALBUM WOULD BE SHOWN HERE!
BUT AS THE ALBUM ONLY HAD WRITING ON THE FRONT COVER, WE, VIRGIN
RECORDS, THOUGHT WE WOULD DO THE SAME FOR THE CASSETTE. THIS IS
CALLED BEING CONSISTENT. THE AIM OF THIS WRITING IS TO INTEREST YOU,
THE CONSUMER, SUFFICIENTLY SO YOU WILL COUGH UP THE READIES NEEDED TO
BUY THIS PRODUCT. AND IT IS A GOOD PRODUCT WELL WORTH BUYING."

BTW: the inlay card lists the band members as follows:

ANDY PARTRIDGE - Guitar
BARRY ANDREWS - Organ
COLIN CHAMBERS - Drums

Well, I just bought my third copy and ordered my fourth copy of Apple
Venus 1 over the weekend. It is the perfect gift.

I also "forced" a good friend to listen to AV1 while we sat around in
the spring sunshine, drinking beer. The only comment that he made was
that the vocals on "River of Orchids" reminded him of (in a good way)
Yes. This comparison had never occurred to me, and I'm not sure I agree.
Has anyone else heard or made that comparison? I've always been a
borderline fan of Yes, sometimes they're great, others merely annoying.
I think it's Jon Anderson's voice that causes me irritation, much like
Geddy Lee.

A quick "thank you" to those who mentioned Martin Newell's "Greatest
Living Englishman" on the list. It's a fantastic disc that I would've
never heard otherwise. "Before the Hurricane" seems to be a glimpse in
the direction that Andy Partridge was headed for AV1. "Thank you" also
to Keith Sawyer for pointing me toward Mark Eitzel; I'm hooked. "60 Watt
Silver Lining," along with Newell's "G.L.E." and the "Buddy Holly
Collection" are the only discs of late that press AV1 for time in the
player.

my 'Sgt. Pepper' would be just that. I just got myself a more serious

For those with a few extra $, my band, Plum, just released our 3rd CD.
It's distributed nationwide or can be ordered through w3cd.com for about
$11.US.
Also, this Friday we start a 3 week tour. Plum's dates:
F Apr 9 the Hurricane in KC
S Apr 10 People's in Ames, Iowa
Sn Apr 11 Duffy's in Lincoln, Neb
W Apr 14 The Fine Line Minneapolis, Minn.

W Apr 21 Luna Lounge NYC (10 pm)
F Apr 23 Arlene's Grocery NYC (7pm)
M Apr 26 The Sutler Nashville, Tenn.
 - then back home to Austin.

A recent review placed us next to Jellyfish, Crowded House, and The Posies
- and as I am a memeber of this list. . . .

So please come out. We've been known to play a song or two from the XCT
catalog including: Respectable St., Everything, Snowman, Earn Enough For
Us, and others. Perhaps we'll sprinkle some in if, say, I spot a
chalkhills shirt or something else likewise noticable.

Subject: ROO, AV in general and various other naughty bits

Greetings and welcome to a very eclectic post:

Regarding the ongoing discussion of the musical arrangement of ROO.
I think most of the intricacies of the rhythmic structure arise
From the fact that this song is basically built on counterpoint. I
wouldn't go so far as to say it is a "fugue" or "canon" in a pure sense
but it definitely has elements thereof. I find the use of counterpoint
in a "pop" song to be both amazing and enjoyable. I refuse to classify
ROO as a "stunt song" precisely because it is quite complex but still
accessible. XTC has been playing with counterpoint structure for a
while (ex... the trumpets in Omnibus)

Regarding non directly XTC posts: I think it is a great thing that
eloquent people post their opinions regarding such things as the evils
of automobiles to this group. It is indeed relevant because it
elucidates an element of life that clearly has an impact upon the
music of XTC. I would argue that there has been a healthy distrust of
technology in XTC's music for quite a while (RBR on Drums and Wires comes
immediately to mind). I will add a loud and hearty "ME TOO!" to
Duncan's post regarding cars. I do not drive, never have... and it
heartens me to read an intelligent critique of the culture of
automobiles.

Regarding spelling and grammar in posts: Yes it is nice to read a
well constructed post with immaculate grammar and spelling. However,
I think it would do us all good to remember that posting to this group is a
recreational activity, not an attempt at a doctoral dissertation.
Not only that, but attacking grammar, spelling, etc.. is a rather
transparently irrelevant to debate on the content of any post.

Regarding censorship: Ok, this thread has been spun out far too long but
I can't resist making a comment: A polite request for a certain amount
of discretion has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with censorship. Why?
Because we foul mouth bastard can still say whatever the fuck we want.

Enjoy

Dear Mr Chalkhills

Had Mr Partridge written a song called "River of Lettuce" where he
instructs us all to '..push the steak from your plate.." no doubt this
mailing list would be chock full of earnest 5-page dissertations
about the merits of vegetarianism.<<<<<<<<<<<<<

Or it could be "Toilet of Shit, flushing away" where our instruction
would be to "push that poop from your colon". (wait... did I get
the area right... wasn't there the argument before... damn WHY
did I not listen???)

Or it could be "Page of Crap" where our instructions, then, would
be "delete the words from the screen"?

... What's the point... you don't the little debate... make
yourself a new one! ;-)

I wouldn't give a 5-page dissertation on the merits of vegetarianism.
I like my meat. Steak, my lord, you can't beat. Pig or cow
you must eat... is that short and sweet?

Fearing that we might actually launch into the topic hinted at above, I
would respectfully ask: What would be wrong with that?

If people want to comment intelligently regarding the statements made in
XTC's music, isn't that what this list is all about? I think the argument
for/against motorized individual transportation is certainly valid,
considering Andy's alreay-voiced views on the subject. The arguments so
far have been quite compelling, even though they are not always realistic
for all parts of the world.

That said, I do enjoy my car. I'm a bit of a gearhead, so I tend to
gravitate towards high-tech contraptions that I can tinker with.
(although calling my Honda Civic Si "high-tech" may be stretching things
a bit.)

What I'd like to see pushed from road are these idiotic Sport Utility
Vehicles. These vehicles have virtually no purpose, are a danger to other
vehicles, get lousy gas mileage, and handle like, well, trucks. Dave
Barry wrote an excellent send-up on these ridiculous vehicles a few weeks
ago. Check it out here:

Anyway, I think the discussion of transportation as it relates to River
of Orchids is a good one, and has been quite interesting thus far. One of
the more civil arguments of late, as well.

I think I'm reaching my limits on the time-sig debate, but that's just
because I'm not into music theory.

Subject: Martin Newell, Andy and sctuff...

Hello Chalk-ettes!

Last Friday, I was listening to Martin Newell's *The Greatest Living
Englishman,* Featuring the New Improved * Andy Partridge and could not find
a date this album was produced or recorded.

Any one know?

Why does Martin suggest that Andy is "New Improved?" What connection does
Martin have with Andy? And, is there a correlation with the Dukes and
Martin's psychedelic (Shaggo-delic baby) sound? Sounds like it was
recorded on an 8 track too.

Also, considering Andy's brilliance and gift at songwriting, tone poems,
use of puns, idiosynchratic lyrics, and the like, what was "Through the
Hill," by Andy and Harold Budd meant to achieve? I did not understand this
production! Or, quoting from *Song Stories,* was Andy just 'dicking
around'?

Is there a statement about this album?

Hello All

I found the following listed at CDnow. Has anyone purchased this version?
If so, what do you think/was it worth it ($30.00 at CDnow)? Since there are
no additional tracks on this version, is the packaging so deluxe as to
warrant the extra cost?

Thanks

HM

The XTC songbook, "Eleven Different Animals" also mistakenly has Andy down
as the author of "Nigel." Somebody wasn't doing their homework, obviously!

Chalk alongs

I apologize that my little diagram of the RoO pizz strings phrase in #161
came out all mangled. It looked good when I sent it. Oh well. I'll post
it again when I figure out how to get it to Chalkhills intact.

People,
The Unabomber was a cold-blooded MURDERER. Who the fuck cares how he
spells his name?!?! He should be removed from this planet, forthwith.
Better yet, he should be pithed like a frog and subjected to live medical
experiments.

Right-to-lifers please feel free to flame me offline. Can we return to the
music now?

Dear Chalkers,

Heaps of thanks to Paul Henly who alerted us all to this:

Me too! This could be just the perfect vehicle for his wit and banter
I wonder who he will be teamed up with. Couple of weeks ago fellow
teen idol and Swindonian singer Billy (no last name) was on the show
and i reckon she'd be a great teammate for the old goat :)
