I gather that the majority on this list would rank ENGLISH SETTLEMENT as #1, with SKYLARKING a close second.>> And so I suppose that makes a logical entry to introduce onesself. I just joined up with Chalkhills a week ago and have been lurking waiting for the chance to jump in. But as far as my admiration for XTC goes, that goes back to '79-'80, whenever it was that I heard "Black Sea" on WQDR in Raleigh NC on their "all night albums" feature (sandwiched in between a Pat Benatar and an Al Stewart as I recall) Anyway, from the guitar hook of Respectable Street, I've been hooked! And actually, whether it's a "first love" thing or not, I would still rank that one as my overall fave, with the aforementioned ES & Skylarking right behind, but ranking these kind of things is very difficult for me...I have them all and enjoy them all! As for AV1, it remains at the top of my Best of '99 list, along with Beth Orton, Tom Waits, Ben Folds Five. I am especially fond of MY copy of AV1 as it has Mr. Partridge's autograph on it in gold ink yet! (He signed it at a Borders in Chicago). As far as personal info goes, I'm 41 and live in Greenville, SC at present. I'm also a big fan of Elvis Costello, Joni Mitchell, Bruce Springsteen, and scads of others. Looking forward to being a part of this group! Bob
------------------------------ From: WillJ4comm@aol.com Message-ID: <beb4fd9a.24eb4421@aol.com> Date: Tue, 17 Aug 1999 19:02:57 EDT Subject: upcoming releases, av1, etc. Mitch, anyone, any AV2 news from the front? Are they at least making progress? Anyway, a few new release items: Sept. 7 - New release from Blinker the Star. In CMJ, the leader of the group says his goal is to get his own music back in line with his days as an "XTC fanatic," like when he was 14 and was blown away by the sheer awesomeness of Skylarking. He thinks on this album he's getting closer. I'll likely be picking that one up, though I've never heard anything from them, based on his lofty praise of our boys which I merely paraphrased and condensed here... Sept. 28 - Two releases this day: 1) Matthew Sweet's new one, reunited with his "Girlfriend" band for the first time since that great album; and 2) New Sting, entitled "Brand New Day." I've been listening to the man lately, and I gotta say, the guy is reeeeally good in my book. Secondly, on the "how's AV1 holding up?" thread, my two cents are that it is indeed one of their best, if not maybe their best (though I don't own White Music or Go2, so maybe I'm speaking too soon!). I listen to it at least a few times a week, though I still use the different listening order I sifted out a few months ago: 11, 10, 7, 6, 8, 5, 1, 2, 3, 4, 9 AV1 is EASILY my leading contender for album of the year, and may be in the pole position for album of the decade. Suffice to say, it's holding up very nicely. Is it my favorite XTC album? Whew, that's a toughie -- then you have to try to compare it to Black Sea, English Settlement, Oranges & Lemons, Nonsuch, Mummer (heck, why not just mention all of them?), but I must say it holds a position right at the top -- it's a darn fine piece o work. It may be the best, I'm leaning toward that -- man, it's freekin' awesome, I just get giddy thinking about how great it is. "Your Dictionary" may be the most exquisitely arranged piece of pop music in the decade, unless that award goes to one of the other tracks on this album. Awesome, excellent stuff, I love every bit of it. Ahh, that felt nice. Thanks for the opportunity. Will J

For all of you out there who are sick of paying for the crap Hollywood has been dealing as of late--then, go see Iron Giant (while you still can). The Iron Giant is the really great new film by WB...and, even though it has incredible art & animation, NO stupid songs/sidekicks, has a great message for both kids and adults, AND rave reviews (possible Best Picture nomination)....the film is DYING in the box office....for some reason, people just don't seem to know about it! Does this sound familiar to you? great art--hailed by critics and ignored by the masses? An all too familiar story around here, huh? I am very sorry for taking up space for a non-XTC topic....I have never done this before, and would never have done it had it not been for such a good cause, I swear. I really think Andy & Colin would approve--the movie is right up their alley: cool soldier stuff with an anti-violence message! And, remember how Disney tried to screw Andy over with the whole James and the Giant Peach thing? Now is our chance for revenge--so, support non-Disney animation! Besides, my best friend (a HUGE XTC fan) worked on it! The Iron Giant is a terrific film. You don't even have to be an animation fan to enjoy it. It is not like any other animated movie before--it is more like a live action film that happens to be animated...(and animated well). Please go see it, and, then tell everyone you know how great it was! (and continue to do the same for XTC!) thanks, Kate (the Baltimore one)

So often I read that "N" is heralded as a catalyst in the most recent musical paradigm shift. But, it is not the case that there were only lame heavy metal or glam metal bands, R&B, or vacuous pop bands to listen to before Nirvana. A recent VH1 special contained an interview with the lead guy from Loverboy who lamented over Nirvana's dousing their creative and lucrative flame. What a load! There's always the blues! Bands like The Reverend Horton Heat and other progressively speedy guitar-blues groups sounded great during the "Nirvana shift". And don't forget The Greatful Dead. I'm not embarrassed to admit that I was just in time to catch a few last shows. And from there you could jump to Phish. Sure, Phish is drenched in a psychadelic groove a lot of the time, but you'd be hard pressed to deny their musicianship and composition abilities. I would pay good money to see Phish cover Knights In Shining Karma!

A few more thoughts this Wednesday Morn, 1) I am feeling absolutely great this morning, and I've been blaring XTC from my car and desk all morning. I am in awe of Andy and Colin, particularly struck by Andy's lyrical power, as "Summer's Cauldron" is perfectly reflective of my state of mind today; which leads me to: 2) The one thing I left off the new music bulletin. News from the George Harrison camp: George has completed a brand new solo album, more guitar-based than anything -- excellent. Secondly, Harrison has purchased the rights to all his old solo material AND the Wilburys material, and is re-releasing both catalogs with six to eight demos, b-sides, etc. PER ALBUM -- and that includes the Wilburys stuff. Could be some great unreleased material from those sessions. 3) Andy and Colin rule, if I didn't mention it already. I have a broad musical range and love all kinds of stuff, and album for album, song for song, XTC are in my book the best band in the world today -- I like their catalog more than anyone else's right now, even the Beatles. Heck, I may even have to go pick up White Music and Go2! Just wanted to add those items, Have a great one. Will J

This is just funny to me, because I remember Andy Partridge talking about this phenomenon back in an interview around the time of O&L (hm, may have even been on the radio tour). However, his view seemed to be different. I remember him saying that American audiences were so massive, that releasing a song here was like dropping a pebble into a lake-- the ripples took a long time to reach the fringes (ie, everyone), but it kept going and didn't stop. Britain, on the other hand, he said was like dropping a pebble into a saucer of water-- it had a powerful effect, but the ripples went out and back quickly and then it was gone. He saw Britain as having a lot more one-hit wonders. Does anyone else remember this? wow, actual XTC content, from me... megan.
