As I read this, I could hear Tony Bennett crooning "I own this river, I own
this town.  All of its climbers and its winos sliding down. . . . But I
can't own her, and I never will . . . "   It sent chills up my spine.  Could
this be a timeless classic waiting in the winds that will be done and redone
for ages?  This song was made for the lounge singer.  A love song, or is
it...?

I guess its the versitility of the songs.  I dont know.  This is probably
not my top 5, I mean, how can I think of something like that!?  I listened
to every album for almost, un, damn, 12 years now so the thing I like the
most is how each album triggers the memory of the time when I got the
album.. Anyway, love the list...

Awhile back, I tried to appeal to the musicians out there in Chalkland to send
in their suggestions for a new "best of" list:

While the sheer volume of the response (1) totally bowled me over, I
still refuse to admit defeat.  Because one devoted Colin fan came
through: who else but my favorite bass-playing, Japanese-American,
pseudonym-using, music-loving Chalkhiller Y.Y., aka M.N. (Esq.), who
sent me the following answer which I thought was worth sharing:

Basslines?  Why that's my favorite subject, naturellement!  Ok, my
favorites (6, instead of 5) are as follows: English Roundabout, Roads
Girdle the Globe, Ladybird, Are You Receiving Me, This Is Pop, and
Millions.  "English Roundabout" has really excellent precision and is
very melodic (acts as a sort of countermelody).  Colin's playing is a
good counterpoint to the drums (a solid rhythm section, indeed).
"Roads" has the great slides, which gives the listener the visceral
quality of traveling.  The intro to "Ladybird" is a textbook case of
achieving good tone on the bass.  "Are You Receiving Me" has a
poignantly lovely chorus, which is in due part to Colin favoring the
higher register of the bass.  "This Is Pop's" idiosyncratic bass lines
contribute to the satirical bent of the song.  "Millions" is just pure
genius, but you already know that...

"Greenman" also features some fine playing.  Colin is actually playing
a 60's era Epiphone Newport.  According to Mr. Moulding, "It's an old
'60s-type bass with a damper, which gives it that stringy double-bass
sound."  The aforementioned quote comes from an excellent interview
with him in Bass Player Magazine from April of this year.

As for her choices, I couldn't agree more!  (Well, there are quite a
few others I really like, for no particular reason, such as "One of
the Millions", for instance.)  And as for Bass Player Magazine, I hope
that article gets added to Chalkhills' list asap, I would certainly
love to read it.

Way to go, Tyler!!  *Loved* your ideas!  Dear TVT, hire this person
immediately, pay this person what it takes, I personally cast my vote
for a position of vice president!  I would buy every one of those CDs.
(They could do the JarMusic thing and put out a small edition of them,
just for the fans.)

Ah c'mon, a fair amount of people have come to their defense here. I'm not
crazy about them, but they do have their charms. They're good players with a
good sense of humor.

I like your ideas, Tyler, but why not take this to its logical conclusion?
For instance, let's rename Black Sea and call it Work Under Pressure. Let's
restore Andy's original artwork for Skylarking. And so on...

A lot of interesting stuff has been said on the subject of Fruit Nut, and
I'll add my poisons to the mix by bringing up something someone pointed out
a while back. It could be that there are two separate "benefits" to the
shed:
1) I mix the poisons (insecticides, alcoholic repast, whatever your
interpretation); and
2) The wife don't complain (this could be a reference to Colin escaping from
his wife's complaints and thus keeping his marriage working, as Jim
suggests, or, if the song is indeed about Andy, that he's escaping from his
own marital discord).

Whatever the case may be, one thing is certain: Only Colin knows what he
meant when he wrote it.

Steven Paul asked:

Don't worry about the "She's Having a Baby" soundtrack -- you can find
"Happy Families" on Rag and Bone Buffet, along with the uplifting and
totally fun "Take This Town," which means you don't have to buy the
soundtrack for "Times Square," either.

Finally, Charlie Buck told us:

Songs?!? On an album? Jesus, what is this world coming to? But, just to make

the only xtc i've listened to in the last 2 weeks is the jv sketchbook
demo (thanx nicole).

Now , why would an XTC fan who is obviously NOT short of cash ( and
who was lucky enough to get their hands on a GREEN MAN promo for $ 1 )
buy a rare XTC item to " flip it on ebay " - and then have the gall to
tell US about it ? This reminds me of the so-called " fans " who had
Andy and Colin sign bags full of stuff only to put all of it up for
auction on Ebay . Sick stuff . It takes all kinds as they say but this
sort of mega-capitalist braggadoccio horseshit goes against the spirit
of not only this list , but the band we all love XTC . Any voiced
support would help lower my blood pressure .

Just wanted to drop a quick mini-review of the remixed Yellow Submarine, for
those contemplating a purchase.

Leaving aside the question as to whether remixing the Beatles constitutes
"heresy" (or blasphemy, profanity, treason, sedition, defamation, regicide,
or whatever), the new tracks sound good; in some cases, damn good.  In
general they sound very spacious, suggesting that working from 4-track
masters wasn't a great hindrance after all; in fact, I might suggest that a
few tracks are a bit *too* spacious: the engineers pulled the instruments so
far apart the tracks feel a little barren.  (Lucy in the Sky is an example
of this.)  Maybe it just comes from knowing how tight the songs used to
sound; I don't know.

That's not meant as a serious criticism, though; these mixes are still a
treat to listen to.  Eleanor Rigby alone is worth the price of the disk: the
backing tracks are detailed and rich and the vocals pristine, especially the
harmonies in the chorus.  The sloppy double-tracking at the top of the first
verse is fixed, and the main vocals (on this track and the rest) are mixed
in the middle rather than off to one side.  Any Beatles fan will want to
hear this.

Other things of note:

* On Yellow Submarine, John now sings "a life of ease!" in his funny
admiral's voice
* I noticed an electric guitar in Love You To for the first time
* The backing tracks are particularly subtle in With a Little Help From My
Friends (I almost didn't recognize the opening guitar phrase)
* The bad vocal edit on Lucy in the Sky has been fixed, and the track in
general seems a little less echoey
* All You Need Is Love sounds almost suspiciously clear, with no trace of
lo-fi ambience

In sum, a very good effort.  Let's hope it sells a lot of copies and EMI
gets the hint and moves on to the rest of the catalog.

Great to see some talk concerning Colin's "Fruit Nut". While I don't see the
"poisoning of the wife" angle at all, I do quite enjoy the song. Remember
when AV1 first came out? Comment after comment about how Colin's two
offerings weren't up to Andy's brilliance? Bah! In my mind, these are two of
the best tracks on the CD. "Frivolous Tonight" would easily make my all-time
top XTC song list. It's just perfect.

Speaking of Colin, here are some other songs of his I think may not get
enough accolades:

"The World Is Full Of Angry Young Men"
"One Of the Millions"
"Cynical Days"
"In Loving Memory Of A Name"
"Big Day"
"Bungalow" (musically, a brilliant companion piece to 'Frivolous')
"The Affiliated"

Not many bands have 2 GREAT songwriters. Luckily, XTC is an exception.

"Happy Families" is an okay song with great lyrics.  You should get
"Rag & Bone Buffet", which has that and 23 other XTC songs of various
types most of which you also haven't heard.

Well there's me for example, and just so you know, Phish has the biggest
cult following since The Grateful Dead.  I used to hate Phish until my
brother convinced me to buy their album "A Picture of Nectar"
and it's probably one of the best albums i own(Not better then any of my xtc
albums, but still very, VERY, VERY good).

This would be of tantamount interest to the Shriekback mailing list

Okay, I have a theoretical question here.  You know how the film
industry has, over the past few years, made 'biographical' movies on
the likes of the Doors, the Beatles (sort of), Loretta Lynn, etc.?  I,
personally, think that the XTC story would make a wonderful cinema
experience.  Should the powers that be ever decide to make such a film,
whom do you think should play the band members?

HELP! I haven't been able to listen to XTC for over two weeks now! I've
tried, but I don't enjoy. it! I'm hoping it's just a phase, cause I love
their music, but I'm just not in the right mood, or something. I had been
listening to Mummer for about three days straight because it had suddenly
clicked with me, and I was really enjoying it. then, I put Heaven and Hell
by Joe Jackson on, an album I hadn't listened to since the day I bought it,
and I loved it. I listened to nothing but that for about a week. Then I
bought Feelings by David Byrne, which I had only previously had on tape, and
that's all I've een listening too for the past week. Now I'm listening to
the commercial album by the Residents. All these albums are great, but I
want to listen to XTC> How can I get back into the mood? Please Help Me!

I've just placed one of the biz graffiti Apple Venus 1 & 2 boot demo cd's on
ebay, www.ebay.com  Feel free to run the bid up, all proceeds go towards the
purchase of a new(old) acoustic for me(wes).  This is the only copy of this
cd that I've ever laid eyes on.

I'm going to be out of town for the next week or so & won't be able to return
email until then.

Some discussion about Fruit Nut (Hi Olof).  The thought that Fruit Nut
might be about Andy occured to me as well.  It just happened to occur to
me while waiting in line to talk to him as Borders blasted AV1 over their
speakers.  Our dialogue went something like this.

Me: Would you say that this song, Fruit Nut, is about you?
Andy: (while signing my Skylarking record jacket, laughs a little) No.
It's about Colin's love for fruits and vegetables of all kinds.

I think it's pretty clear that it is about Andy at least partly.  Does he
just not get it or is he in denial?

Not a very detailed description, is it Charlie? Can you feed us a few more
freeform memories?

I could suggest a few possibilities, in increasing likelihood:

1) You *thought* you have all albums available, but in fact you don't -
after all, those 3 must've been available at some point in the history of
rock and roll.

2) You hallucinated and thought those records by the California band "X"
were really by XTC. ;-)

3) Those were import albums, yet I don't know of any non-US XTC albums that
contain *only* original songs (i.e. not found anywhere else).

4) The shop-owner had made a mock-XTC cover and tried to sell a [insert
name of other band] album to unsuspecting XTC fans, knowing full well that
we'd jump at "anything with XTC written on it".

5) There is another band called XTC.

6) While keeping us waiting 7 years for each new "official" album, XTC have
recorded 26 albums in the last 13 years for the underground Chinese market,
where they have a huge following.

7) An astral connection has created a space-time continuum warp which has
allowed 3 XTC album to seep in from a parallel universe where XTC are
popular with teenyboppers, play live, wear metalhead wigs, and release more
albums than rabbits make children.

8) You hadn't eaten well, you passed out onto the record shop floor and
dreamt of 3 unknown XTC albums (it happens to me all the time, don't worry).

9) You were chosen by the Gods to witness the epiphany of more XTC albums.

10) You *are* God and you just created the albums on a whim -- not
forgetting the Bible reference, of course.

A sad piece of news:

A few years back, a good friend had bought me a can of a herbal energy
drink called "XTC", knowing I'd keep it on the shelf as a collector's item.

Yesterday, I recovered my stuff from my ex-house (where my ex-wife lives -
humpf), and someone had opened the can and drunk it! Now all I have is a
none-too-impressive empty can.

My vinyl XTC survived unscathed.

today I added the following to the site, all in streaming Real Audio:

2 versions of R STEVIE MOORE's song "Dates": one with guitar by Dave
Gregory, and the other with Dave Gregory on guitar AND vocals! Both
rule. I'm not kidding. I don't recall the last time I listened to a song
12 times in a row and STILL WANTED TO HEAR IT MORE afterwards.
