There are still some ignorent people on this list who wont quit, but I
will try and put that behind me. Anyone a fan of Boingo? Just getting
your perspective on the group, who I feel is the best group of this era.
Yes, in my oppinion, Danny and the boys rip XTC. Not saying they are
better, but they are really good in what they do. I am asking because
very early Boingo had a very similar sound to XTC. Anyway, let me know
what your thoughts are on this. Oh, I read somewhere on one of the old
posts that a lot of people rip "Officer Blue." I love that song! God
bless you all...

Three cheers for Ian for putting up his very cool site for rare XTC related
sounds, and even movies. There's a lot of stuff on there that I've
distantly heard of, but never managed to hear. I'm especially fond of the
Jamesy Peachy demos, which I finally get to hear.

That URL again: http://www.geocities.com/xtcliveanddirect/

One reason I appreciate it so much is that my cassette collection is an
absolute nightmare from years of trading and collecting all sorts of
tapes. The cassette format could die once and for all, right now, and I
don't think I'd miss it.

I imagine that in the near future I'll turn my XTC collection into mp3s and
store them all on something the size of a corn flake so I can play them in
my car or wherever I happen to be.

Or maybe not. Either way, thanks Ian!

Hey Chalk-kids,

Just wondering if anyone has a General Midi version of the "Then She
Appeared" midi file available on this site, or could replace the
instruments used with ones from the general midi format? It comes out as
all pianos for me, so ends up too 'Aladdin Sane' for my liking! Crikey! I
would really like to use it as backing for a webpage, (busy trying to
spread the gospel according to XtC).

Subject: What if?

I'm not sure if this subject has come up, I have a
feeling it has, so bare with me here. :) Okay, what
if XTC did a cover album, what songs would you like to
see on them. The only thing is that it can only be 12
songs. I know this is going to be tough for some of
you, including me, but put your thinking caps on. If
you want to you can add The Dukes on a couple of
tracks.
Okay, there are my picks, please no flamage (hey, I
made a new word).

1. Baby, Your a Rich Man - The Beatles
2. Comfortably Numb - Pink Floyd
3. My Generation - The Who
4. Avalon - Roxy Music
5. I'm Not Your Steppin' Stone - The Monkees
6. Good Vibrations - The Beach Boys (the Dukes
could sing this one)
7. All Together Now - The Beatles
8. Don't Stop - Fleetwood Mac (with special guest
vocalist, Christine McVie)
9. Bohemian Rhapsady - Queen (Ha, I would love to
see The Dukes do this song)
10. Tommy's Holiday Camp - The Who
11. Circle Sky - The Monkees
12. The End - The Beatles

I know this might start a little battle, but remember
this is MY opinion and you can't change it. Now let's
see if you can do any better. (Bwahahahahahaha)

Subject: Domapalooza

Hi:

Oh, absolutely. The recordings I've done of me playing along with XTC
records are easy to do, and only slightly disconcerting to a listener other
than myself (or so I've been told).

Harrison gave an almost 100% accurate depiction of the events of Saturday,
Oct. 9, hereafter known (with all credit due to Mike Versaci, aka Stormy
Monday) as "Domapalooza." A couple of subtle clarifications:

1) When I first met Dom, fresh off the plane at Dulles Airport with his
far-too-good-for-him fiancee Debs, I immediately thought of the immortal
words of Our Andy in a message of His to Dom: "Go Away, Stinky Longhair."
But Dom's good nature and enormous size ("Don't show fear! Don't show
fear!!") soon overcame any objections I may have had to his piquant aura,
which was actually emanating from the wheel of malodorous Stilton cheese
that he inexplicably carries with him at all times.

2) Dom's tits aren't really _that_ big. But they're really firm and
fragrant, and swell like the ground. I've fallen deeply in love with him,
and I don't care who knows it.

> "I-I'm the Empress Dowager of China," I stammered, but Bernhardt smacked
> me on the back of the head, hard. "None of your crap, Sherwood," he said
> in a steely tone. "You know what happened...last time." Indeed I did
> remember, and impulsively touched the burn scars on my lower back.

3) Call 1-800-SHOCKEM (http://www.shockem.com) for more information.

> And so that's what we did. All night. And partied ev-er-y day. Pretty
> much covered the Catalog, we did, from "Science Friction" to "I'd Like
> That," with stops along the way at Towers of London, Senses Working
> Overtime, Earn Enough for Us, and Books Are Burning (Oh, the solo I
> played on that one! Oh my! Forty, no FIFTY minutes long, really
> *exploring* it, *working* it, *featuring* my pain, dive-bombing and
> controlled-feedbacking until there wasn't a dry eye in the basement!)

4) I confirm that we all were weeping. I believe it was Dom who eventually
wrestled Harrison to the ground and took away his guitar.

5) We played Mayor of Simpleton, too. Twice. And Nigel. And Love on a
Farmboy's Wages. And Burning with Optimism's Flames. And...

6) As we flailed our way through these instant tunes, I couldn't help
thinking that, somewhere in Swindon, Andy Partridge was tossing and turning
in a cold sweat, plagued by unsettling dreams, vaguely aware that all was
not right in the world. A disturbance in The Force, so to speak. But we
didn't care.

> Damn yeah, that was a good time. Jeff Ogata & Pia, Dom & Debs, Rob
> Cosentino and friend-whose-name-I-didn't-catch,

7) His name was Andrew, and he was a scary-good bass player (we had FOUR
bass players at this event, which made me very happy as a drummer -- even
though they never responded to my repeated pleas for a version of "Big
Bottoms").

8) Andrew also referred to Andy Partridge as "Da Bomb," a
right-on-the-money description that will stay with me always.

And finally, John's quote o' the issue in #285:

> He must have dropped it after too much beer!

I assume you're referring to Domapalooza, Mr. Relph. Well, I'd like to
point out that I held on to mine all night long.

Subject: A Nation Once Again

Hi, everyone--

This has nothing to do with XTC, but I don't know who else to ask and I'm
sure someone on this list knows the answer to my question.

In A Hard Day's Night (the movie), in the scene where Ringo and Wilfred
Brambell (playing Paul's grandfather) are in the police station, Wilfred
defies the police sergeant, and sings "A nation once again" at him. Can
someone enlighten me about the song this line is from? I assume it's an
Irish separatist anthem. Anyone know all the words? Is A Nation Once
Again the title or just the beginning of the chorus?

I tried to find the answer to this on the Voyager CD-ROM of the movie, but
couldn't find it. But I was surprised at how much of the dialog I didn't
understand without the script.

Thanks for any assistance any of you can give me on this one. Sorry for
the lack of XTC content.

Jason K.

I'd go with the likes of "Roads Girdle The Globe," "Travels In Nihilon,"
"Train Running Low On Soul Coal," then wash it all down with "Funk Pop A
Roll." Of course, XTC has their poppy side, but maybe by then she'll
concede that XTC does GOOD pop. If all else fails, lay the Dub Experiments
on her.

I couldn't agree more! It's perfect music for when you really need to
jump up and down in your living room! This album was re-released on
CD a few years back with several new and/or hard to find tracks (like
"Office Girls"). If you like XTC's first three albums (the "This Is
Pop" and "Helicopter" type songs), you'd enjoy this mostly
undiscovered post-punk gem. But you must be prepared to bounce around
and laugh a lot.

Apparently David Oh's not reading his own posts before sending them

....but he didn't stop there folks!.....

american football is the most over-rated of all sports and its fans'
worship of, and devotion to, the "sport" is the most ridiculous and
incomprehensible thing i think one can do... next to joining the kkk,
that is.

good, well timed comparison, and then....

the discussion of football (american or otherwise), or any other sport
for
that matter, really has no place here at chalkhills. can we stick to the

music, please?

He succeeded in commenting on that which he requested that we all not
comment on. Since HE brought it back into the mix of threads, I think
that his comments about american football are absurd. I used to watch
the NFL quite regularly on Sundays with my family and every
Thanksgiving. I haven't watched it in several years for various reasons
but I defend ANYONE's desire to be a fan. To suggest that watching
american football is "ridiculous and incomprehensible" might be the most
ignorant statement I've heard in years. Who are YOU to determine what
is right for someone to be a fan of? Maybe you could give us a list of
appropriate or "comprehensible" sports to follow? Lastly, thanks for
bringing the issue back up, this one was easy to defend.

Re: Homespun....I received my copy of Homespun in the mail yesterday
(along with the Beatle's Yellow Submarine Songtrack...a real gem) and I
love it! Liner notes are just awesome! The 'first' version of "I'd
Like That" was worth the price of admission to me. As I listened to it,
I considered that the only reason that this CD existed is because of the
groundswell of support by diehard fans of the group who'd circulated the
demos ahead of the release of AV1. As suggested earlier in Chalkhills,
the band probably wanted to put out the "official" bootleg album to
capitalize on this market. It made me proud to consider myself part of
a group of fans who care enough about the band to make them release
their demos at all!!!

Re: XTC in America...Almost everyone in college (Saint Louis University
'93) knew of XTC before I got to school in '89. The strong majority of
them pretty well only knew "Skylarking" but all of my friends could name
two songs by them. I lived in a dormitory whose main focus interest was
music (this may have influenced the knowledge ratio) but liking XTC was
not THAT out of the norm. There were a few CD stores around St. Louis
whose owners liked XTC enough to display posters and T-shirts of XTC
prominently in their stores. West End Wax and Streetside Records are a
few examples. By the time Nonsuch came out, I had purchased every XTC
CD (to date), and I do not recall having to special order any of them
(they were in stock...mostly in West End Wax). So I'm not sure that I
can agree with other's comments that liking XTC in America was weird or
even rare (when I consider my experiences from 89-93).
That being said, I did feel at times that I was the lone XTC
representative for PR in Cleveland (93-95). Few of my peers had heard
of them and getting them hooked was an uphill battle. One success was
when I was playing Skylarking and a friend of mine told me that it
reminded her of a song which she once heard but could not recall. A
full review of XTC's catalog revealed nothing until I remembered the
Dukes CD (filed under "D" of course). The song she had in mind was
"Vanishing Girl" and I was glad to tape it for her (when she promised to
listen to the rest of the tape, an XTC sampler)

Lastly, thanks to May O'Mahoney for her (his?) comments on XTC's
role in the U.S. market. There certainly is an underdog component to my
view of the band's lack of successes.

First off, to add to the Christmas List

Santa's Beard-They Might Be Giants
Careless Santa-Mono Puff

Now, here's a thought I had (I have these from time to time)

You know that movie "The Sixth Senses?" I was thinking, they should of
remixed "Senses Working Overtime" for the soundtrack. Just add a "Six" over
the pause between "five" and "senses," and change the versus like so:

Here it is: "(Six) Senses Working Overtime"

Oh Dread,
I can see the dead
like flesh for the zombies, and living can all die slowely
all do slowely
My My
They eat this guy
like a George Romaro movie, and the dead are all walking slowely
walking slowely

And all the Psycic Friends will talk
and all the other folk will gawk
and the dead the all will talk

'cause I've got
One, Two, Three, Four, Five, Six
senses working overtime
I see the dead folk walkin, I've got
One Two Three Four Five Six
senses working overtime
I've got ESP I can read your mind
your thoughts and wishes
and the dead talk all the time

What do you think?

I liked it, anyway

Kevin "Baseball" diamond (Get it?... oh, nevermind)

P.S. I saw Steven Tyler today. He was walking down the streat, smoking a
cigar. Thought you might want to know. You probably don't. (that's my

I agree! Actually very few people in my corner of the

As for it being weird to listen to XTC in the US, no I
don't think so. I personally believe it's a sign of
mature musical taste, given the hoo-yah that is
belched out via the radio waves for everyone's rabid

         To whom ever posted the
La's/Cast info. I was out selling CDs
today and looked for Munster Hull and,Cast.

I didn't see Mustard Dill but, I did see
  Cast/All Change. I thought the La's was/were
a wonderful band (only one U.S. release that
I know of) and because of the info you posted
on the 'Hill I bought the Cast CD (used $6.99)
I can take it back for a full refund if I don't
          like it.(I do/I won't)

      Mini review: }}} out of }}}}}

                 XTC CONTENT:

A human I know works for a major label (not TVT)
and gives me many CDs to sell (It doesn't want to get
caught and lose it's job) I get to keep what I like, sell
the rest, and split the money with it.

Guess what was in my last shipment (Hint:AV1.)
That's right! An advance copy of AV1. in the red slipcase
with the big green A on the cover. I'm selling it on E-Bay
for $5,000! (cheap if you ask me) But really, the only reason
I mention this is sometimes (60%) advance copies sound better
than other copies (Jitter) When ever I see an 'Advance Copy'
of a CD I love, I buy it (usualy 3-4 bucks) If it doesn't
sound better, I give it to a friend.

Just thought you might like to know.

                      }---:)

P.S. no,I haven't listened to it yet,too busy listening to
a whole bunch of new CDs

Subject: A rock and pop game

Bless you bless you all of you Chalk Hillbillies !
I've made up a little game on my site : since everything's on it is in French
(fuckin'not rock'n'roll language, I must admit...), I'll explain the rules to
you all :
Several lyrics from great rock'n'roll bands or artists are shown, you just
have to guess who's the band. An example ? "No dark horse like me can cramp
all of your style" ? XTC of course ("Wonderland", in case you don't know) !
There are 20 difficult of them on
http://www.multimania.com/martincarayol/rock.htm
and 10 very easy ones on http://www.multimania.com/martincarayol/rock2.htm
I have to warn you : if you're an exclusive XTC fan, you won't be too good at
it, cos there are only non-XTC lyrics ! Since when I made up the game I
didn't even know that hell of a good band !
Hope it will please many of you great wisemen of rock'n'roll !
French Martin

Thats funny, how can you have a logical debate online, especially with
someone who referes to their opponant as a Hamster? Real smart...

Second, regarding that Christian fellow. Settle down. What are you going
on about? I brought up how Christains threaten to bomb a radio station
acording to Andy in the book Song Stories and you say I am being anti
Christian? So, I guess by stating my oppinion I am anti Christian? Also
very smart...

Food for thought:

World Party
Aztec Camera
Howard Jones
Housemartins

Where are they now?!

I have Stewarts Vinyl! I never knew it was that rare. I just have it
sitting in my garage.

Stand on your own head for a change... TMBG

What happened to U2? Is it me or did they go from being a historical band
to being the worst group in history?

Last point. Why does everything I say on this list tend to piss so many
off? Can I state my oppinion or are we all so close minded that I have to
agree with everything that everyone else says? About XTC. I just ordered
Homespun this week and got my CDNow letter "This item was shipped..." Lets
just see when it gets here! Cant wait to hear it...

Ba ba ba ba batery brides... Am I cool now? In? Hip? What is Hip anyway?
God. This could go on forever...
