There's a lot of stuff on there that I've distantly heard of, but never managed to hear. I'm especially fond of the Jamesy Peachy demos, which I finally get to hear. That URL again: http://www.geocities.com/xtcliveanddirect/ One reason I appreciate it so much is that my cassette collection is an absolute nightmare from years of trading and collecting all sorts of tapes. The cassette format could die once and for all, right now, and I don't think I'd miss it. I imagine that in the near future I'll turn my XTC collection into mp3s and store them all on something the size of a corn flake so I can play them in my car or wherever I happen to be. Or maybe not. Oh, absolutely. The recordings I've done of me playing along with XTC
records are easy to do, and only slightly disconcerting to a listener other
than myself (or so I've been told).
Harrison gave an almost 100% accurate depiction of the events of Saturday,
Oct. 9, hereafter known (with all credit due to Mike Versaci, aka Stormy
Monday) as "Domapalooza." A couple of subtle clarifications:
1) When I first met Dom, fresh off the plane at Dulles Airport with his
far-too-good-for-him fiancee Debs, I immediately thought of the immortal
words of Our Andy in a message of His to Dom: "Go Away, Stinky Longhair."
But Dom's good nature and enormous size ("Don't show fear! Don't show
fear!!") soon overcame any objections I may have had to his piquant aura,
which was actually emanating from the wheel of malodorous Stilton cheese
that he inexplicably carries with him at all times.
2) Dom's tits aren't really _that_ big. But they're really firm and
fragrant, and swell like the ground. I've fallen deeply in love with him,
and I don't care who knows it.

4) I confirm that we all were weeping. I believe it was Dom who eventually
wrestled Harrison to the ground and took away his guitar.
5) We played Mayor of Simpleton, too. Twice. And Nigel. And Love on a
Farmboy's Wages. And Burning with Optimism's Flames. And...
6) As we flailed our way through these instant tunes, I couldn't help
thinking that, somewhere in Swindon, Andy Partridge was tossing and turning
in a cold sweat, plagued by unsettling dreams, vaguely aware that all was
not right in the world. A disturbance in The Force, so to speak. But we
didn't care.

7) His name was Andrew, and he was a scary-good bass player (we had FOUR
bass players at this event, which made me very happy as a drummer -- even
though they never responded to my repeated pleas for a version of "Big
Bottoms").
8) Andrew also referred to Andy Partridge as "Da Bomb," a
right-on-the-money description that will stay with me always.
And finally, John's quote o' the issue in #285:

I tried to find the answer to this on the Voyager CD-ROM of the movie, but couldn't find it. But I was surprised at how much of the dialog I didn't understand without the script. He succeeded in commenting on that which he requested that we all not
comment on. Since HE brought it back into the mix of threads, I think
that his comments about american football are absurd. I used to watch
the NFL quite regularly on Sundays with my family and every
Thanksgiving. I haven't watched it in several years for various reasons
but I defend ANYONE's desire to be a fan. To suggest that watching
american football is "ridiculous and incomprehensible" might be the most
ignorant statement I've heard in years. Who are YOU to determine what
is right for someone to be a fan of? Maybe you could give us a list of
appropriate or "comprehensible" sports to follow? Lastly, thanks for
bringing the issue back up, this one was easy to defend.
Re: Homespun....I received my copy of Homespun in the mail yesterday
(along with the Beatle's Yellow Submarine Songtrack...a real gem) and I
love it! Liner notes are just awesome! The 'first' version of "I'd
Like That" was worth the price of admission to me. As I listened to it,
I considered that the only reason that this CD existed is because of the
groundswell of support by diehard fans of the group who'd circulated the
demos ahead of the release of AV1. As suggested earlier in Chalkhills,
the band probably wanted to put out the "official" bootleg album to
capitalize on this market. It made me proud to consider myself part of
a group of fans who care enough about the band to make them release
their demos at all!!!
Re: XTC in America...Almost everyone in college (Saint Louis University
'93) knew of XTC before I got to school in '89. The strong majority of
them pretty well only knew "Skylarking" but all of my friends could name
two songs by them. I lived in a dormitory whose main focus interest was
music (this may have influenced the knowledge ratio) but liking XTC was
not THAT out of the norm. There were a few CD stores around St. Louis
whose owners liked XTC enough to display posters and T-shirts of XTC
prominently in their stores. West End Wax and Streetside Records are a
few examples. By the time Nonsuch came out, I had purchased every XTC
CD (to date), and I do not recall having to special order any of them
(they were in stock...mostly in West End Wax). So I'm not sure that I
can agree with other's comments that liking XTC in America was weird or
even rare (when I consider my experiences from 89-93).
That being said, I did feel at times that I was the lone XTC
representative for PR in Cleveland (93-95). Few of my peers had heard
of them and getting them hooked was an uphill battle. One success was
when I was playing Skylarking and a friend of mine told me that it
reminded her of a song which she once heard but could not recall. A
full review of XTC's catalog revealed nothing until I remembered the
Dukes CD (filed under "D" of course). The song she had in mind was
"Vanishing Girl" and I was glad to tape it for her (when she promised to
listen to the rest of the tape, an XTC sampler)
Lastly, thanks to May O'Mahoney for her (his?) comments on XTC's
role in the U.S. market. There certainly is an underdog component to my
view of the band's lack of successes.

I can take it back for a full refund if I don't

XTC CONTENT:
A human I know works for a major label (not TVT)
and gives me many CDs to sell (It doesn't want to get
caught and lose it's job) I get to keep what I like,sell
the rest, and split the money with it.
Guess what was in my last shipment (Hint:AV1.)
That's right! An advance copy of AV1. in the red slipcase
with the big green A on the cover. I'm selling it on E-Bay
for $5,000! (cheap if you ask me) But really, the only reason
I mention this is sometimes (60%) advance copies sound better
than other copies (Jitter) When ever I see an 'Advance Copy'
of a CD I love, I buy it (usualy 3-4 bucks) If it doesn't
sound better, I give it to a friend.
Just thought you might like to know.

Several lyrics from great rock'n'roll bands or artists are shown, you just
have to guess who's the band. An example ? "No dark horse like me can cramp
all of your style" ? XTC of course ("Wonderland", in case you don't know) !

I have to warn you : if you're an exclusive XTC fan, you won't be too good at
it, cos there are only non-XTC lyrics ! Since when I made up the game I
didn't even know that hell of a good band !
