Subject: Transcriptions?

Hello, XTC enthusiasts,

I am not a regular reader/participant of this list-serve, so perhaps I'm
asking a question that you receive all too frequently, but I wonder if
there is any source of published transcriptions (or even arrangements) of
XTC songs? I would settle for simple lead sheets, but of course something
that more accurately and precisely reflects the recordings would be great.
I've never even found an XTC songbook among those often badly-arranged
piano/vocal scores that one finds in music shops. Is any of their music
available in printed/notated form?

Barring that, does anyone have a handy list of the chord changes to some of
the songs on "Apple Venus"?

Thanks for your help,
David Carson Berry

P.S. I recently racked up another XTC convert: for a friend's birthday I
gave him CDs of AV1 and Skylarking; he now sits at home each day, listening
to "Easter Theatre" over and over again.

Subject: Boingo & things

Chillers,
A quick story. In 1988 , I saw Oingo Boingo when they opened for Squeeze
at the Spectrum in Philly. I happened to be wearing a Drums & Wires
T-shirt. I tried moving towards the front , to no avail until 3 guys
screamed "Nice shirt " and literally picked me up and put me in the front
row ( Im 6' 3", 185). I saw the entire Boingo show from 5 ft away.They
FUCKIN' ROCKED! The Seagrams 7 helped a bit. Their roadie was a knockout,
to boot. She blew me off, though. In case you 've never seen it ,their
"Little Girls" video is one for the books. A classic.
Christopher Coolidge mentioned "Autumn Almanac" by the Kinks as a cover
tune. I believe Colin used that song as inspiration for "Frivolous Tonight".
Anyone who listens to Howard Stern knows of a completely tasteless X-Mas
song done in the early 80's by the late ,great Tiny Tim. About Santa
getting ill & not showing up that year. Quite humorous.
Hey Karl, Youre a good man..... Wheres my bonus points?
  The ramble is over. Roger

Xmas song - 'The Little Boy That Santa Claus Forgot' - excellent version by
Billy MacKenzie, (I think!). If it is Billy MacKenzie, it's also kind of
poignant considering later events. Available on tha CD 'Cool Christmas',
along with a lot of others featured in this list so far and an excellent
song by Stina Nordenstam that I forget the title of.

Recommendation - for those looking for non-XTC material to buy, you won't
go far wrong with 'The Fragile', the new album from Nine Inch Nails (no,
really, don't run away). It's a major advancement on 'The Downward Spiral'
and features some brilliant instrumental tracks.

As I believe Steaua Bucharest discovered last night. You wouldn't suffer
this sort of disappointment if you had the good sense to support a team of
persistent underacheivers such as the Seagulls

XTC content : Um..... Oh yeah, I managed to get a copy of 'Fossil Fuel' for
#8.99 in the HMV sale in Brighton. Bargain!

I'm not the oldest, but I was also born on April 1 (1970). I look on it as
a badge of honor.

Hearing all those reports of crankiness in the ranks of They Might Be Giants
saddens me, but it also makes me relieved I never worked up the nerve to
say, "Hey, John, have a good show tonight!" the two times I've seen
Flansburgh walking or getting in a cab to go to concerts at Irving Plaza,
NY. But I'm still enjoying John Linnell's new "State Songs" release. (And
they'd still go on my 5-favorite-lyricists list, along with XTC [I can count
them as a unit, right?], Aimee Mann, Elvis Costello, and, um...one other
person, depending on the mood I'm in that day.)

I'm new to the list, so forgive me for butting in:

> >I have not bought the Transistor Box set yet, thats next. What
> >did everyone think of that? Is it worth the money?

Yeah, I think it is. I bought it not even knowing most of the early music,
but have since grown to really enjoy it all. I still find the line-up on
the first two discs questionable (why not in chronoligical order, to both
maintain continuity and to keep the sound-quality even? I find it
distracting because tracks recorded late in their career sound dozens of
times better are plopped down next to tracks recorded with lower quality.
They're all good sounding, but they do fluctuate. Maybe I'm just picky.)

> Subject: re: "Homespun" -- to own or not to own...

Well, think of it this way. You went to the trouble to get a hold of the
demos, right? Why not give the band a little money for professional quality
versions of them? I'm not saying that it's okay for a band to release
*anything* and expect die-hard to pay for it because they've got bootlegs,
etc. What I'm saying is, if the demos were so important that you went to
the trouble of tracking down a trader or, worse, *paying* a bootlegger for
them, then how is spending $15 for Homespun a bad choice? You get great
liner notes to accompany a nice package, too. :-)

And as for whether Homespun is "confusing" people, I say, yes, it is. I
went out the day Homespun was supposed to be released, and found only the
Japanese version. I passed on it, but I took it to the guy at the counter
and asked if he'd gotten the US version yet. He said, "Yeah, that's been
out for a long time." Of course, I had to spend a few minutes explaining
that it wasn't AV1, but was a Japanese version of Homespun, "which is a
collection of demos for AV1." This seemed to thoroughly confuse him. He
looked it up, and there were none ordered. So, yes, TVT is right, this
release is confusing the *casual* listener, not the die-hard fans.

Anyway, if any of you out there would like to help out a relative newbie,
I'd love to get copies of the other demos (on CDR.) I have a list of my
unusual collection of bootlegs available for trade at
<http://members.home.com/signals2000>. I'd love to get some of this
unusual stuff I keep hearing about!

I, too, have no kids! And, I, too, notice the parent/child theme in some
xtc songs. In fact, when I listened to Then She Appeared I got the mental
picture of one of those underwater births! I thought it odd that I would
get this imagery since I don't really feel any clocks ticking. I mean, I
don't usually sit around and envision childbirth! Thanks, Melissa, for
bringing it up. And thanks, Janis, for including TSA in your list. I was
about to conduct some heavy introspection to see if I had hidden desires to
procreate! Now I can honestly say "Whew! That was close!"

Just thought I'd stick my nose in where it doesn't belong:

1) Melissa (I think that was the name) wrote:

"I want songs that will mean something to them with their new perspective as
parents. Something they can listen to late at night when they're up with
Mr. and Ms. Fussy-Pants, and possibly that the little ones themselves will
groove to when they're big enough to groove. I want songs that have to do
with children and childhood and parenting and the parent-child relationship
and growing up. Any more suggestions?"

Well, it's a bit off-the-course, but how about "Happy Families"?

2) Every other post around here mentions Ann Arbor. I'm beginning to wonder
if that city has the highest per-capita total of XTC fans. (Along with the
highest per-capita totals of bookstores, cafes and soccer fields)

3) Finally, and sorry to prolong the "football" listings (but my parts 1 and
2 WERE about XTC), but I must reply to Mud Shark. I cannot agree with you
less re: Glasgow Rangers. I know that this is largely ancient history, but
for years they discriminated against Catholic players. That is why Celtic
was able to so-thoroughly dominate the league back when. So, I must put my
support in for now-second-place Glasgow Celtic. But, to each his own.

Sorry for the "football" everyone!

Daiblo stated: I'm guessing that the Homespun thing is a rumor. I just
don't believe they would do that. AV1 has been out for a while and I don't
think its confusing people at all.

It's not likely to confuse a hardcore fan but the concern is about the
interested but less avid fan.

One aspect is that the uninformed consumer may buy Homespun AND Apple
Venus, Volume 1 without reading the package information and be disappointed
with the seeming redundancy. Conversely, one might buy Homespun INSTEAD of
AVv1, hurting AVv1 sales and getting what is considered to be less than the
optimum presentation of that particular music. Yeah, yeah, yeah... Caveat
Emptor and all that but there is little justification in frustrating a
consumer when Homespun is truly a "fan" thing and much less of a general
consumer product.

Additionally, there is the business side of things that the public doesn't
typically see or realize...

If a record retailer or distributor is prompted to take some stock of Apple
Venus Volume 2 and, without a real understanding of what Homespun actually
IS, orders AVv2 stock based on Homespun's market volume (and other data
indicating that it received zero radio play, zero advertising, etc.), the
initial volume of AVv2 will be VERY low. EVERY artist and record label
LOVES to be able to trumpet figures about initial volume shipped. It can
really hurt their sales momentum when the volume is low... radio program
directors take less notice and devote less airtime, record companies can't
rationalize allocating advertising money, promoters are less interested in
appearances (touring, radio station visits, talk shows, signings), et
cetera. There is a very real concern about hurting sales before the
release has even left the gate.

With Homspun being primarily a "fan" thing, it makes very good sense to
only offer it through a catalog or website. With those media vehicles they
have the capability to explain what the product actually is.

It is not simply a "rumor." It is being considered but, true, it may not
happen. While we may not like the action, it should help to have a little
understanding of why it would be done.

Cheers,
Richard Pedretti-Allen

Did anyone notice that our own Dave Mattocks appears on the drums on
Paul McCartney's new album? Well, on a couple of the songs. The rest of
the songs have the drummer from Deep Purple.

I've enjoyed the lists about people's music equipment. If you don't like
'em, just page down, don't bitch!

My list (you'll notice I'm terrible at remembering brand and model
names):

-1965 Hofner violin shaped bass, like Sir Paul's
-a red electric guitar by Hamer...it's a strat copy
-a black electric guitar (can't remember what kind) with Floyd Rose
tremolo (avoid this at all costs)
-a nice acoustic guitar signed by Ray Davies "To Jim -Ray Davies"
-a crappy acoustic guitar that I'd smash on the stage if I ever had the
chance....right now my son gets to play it
-speaking of my son, he lets me use his ukulele on some recordings
-two Costco guitars, one nylon string, one steel. Nice Yamaha guitars
that play well but won't win any "oh wow" awards
-A Washburn acoustic that I keep in California (I live in Hawaii)
-Boss GT 3 guitar effects board. This is SO cool.
-Roland XP 50 keyboard that is awesome
-Midiverb
-a delay
-a bunch of other effects
-a bunch of microphones and preamps, some of them quite pricey
-and, best of all, the Akai DPS 12, which allows me to put all the
instruments to use. This is the tool that enabled me to play a few
things on Mitch Friedman's "The Importance of Sauce" album. It will also
enable me to contribute a song to the upcoming Orien and Lemonaid
tribute album made by us Chalkadores.

After a recording session in San Francisco, I went to the Magnolia Brewing
Company on Haight Street for lunch. Great beer! ...oh yeah, and I ate
lunch too.

They have a Swindon Golden Bitter on the handpump and I was lucky enough to
be able to talk to the brewer. He recently returned from England and had
visited the Archer Brewery in Swindon. His Swindon Golden Bitter was his
attempt at recreating Archers Golden Bitter (but I would guess it has a bit
more hops than Archers).

I felt that Chalkhills should know that there is no XTC connection with
Magnolia's Swindon Golden Bitter and if you need a reason to go there, it
will have to be purely for love of beer.

Howdy all!

The O&L project sounds like a winner, given the line up, you rascals you ;-)

As for a title, may I float "Some of the Millions - A fan's Tribute to XTC"
You can explain the 'concept' of doing O&L on the back or inside or
somesuch, but the cover art should give it away (that 'groovy' thing
baby!); perhaps a psychodelic Uffington horse.

Equipment (sung to the tune of 12 Days of Christmas)

5 broken turntables
4 old receivers
3 8 track tapes
2 reel to reels
And an 8 track recording machine

Oh yeah, some guitars and stuff.

Does anyone out there know where to get 8 tracks?

Anyone interested at all in Captain Beefheart or perhaps the opportunity of
listening to the original Ella Guru and anyone else for that matter should
RUN out and buy 'The Dust Blows Forward', a 2-CD package that sums up all
mutations of the Magic band. My only 'beef' with it is that there's only
one track with him blowing his horn (as close as it gets to a french
trombone) - lots of harp though.

Unfortunately, they broke up. They have a total of 4 albums and some
imports. They are a great group and after the grunge thing of 91, all
groups like them disappeared. Now, everyone wants to sound like Beck or Mr.
Veder of Pearl Jam (though I like both groups, just the copy cats I don't
like!)

Anyone ever hear Felt? Genius! He is kind of like Robyn Hitchcock with a
touch of Beck's quirkiness and some 60's acousticisms.

People love talking about me. Grow up and let me talk about music! All
you keep doing is dwealing on stuff I said a long time ago! Some of you
just wont fu%&!N@ quit! Get over it and move on. I made that comment in
reference to a comment made by Andy Partridge of the group XTC. I thought
the fans of all people would get it, but I guess not. He explained, as I
said before, in Their Book "Song Stories" availible in your local book
stores that someone threatened to blow up a radio station in Florida here
in the US if they played the XTC song, Dear God. I would consider that a
little screwed up! So, making a funny little joke in reference to the

all the noise about lyricists has been interesting reading and, as usual, i
agree with some and disagree with others. however, i'm not about to start
a(nother) debate over who's right or who's wrong, but to point out a
discrepancy. am i right when i say that no one has mentioned frank zappa as
a great lyricist?

frank wrote some of the most interesting and poignant lyrics ever written
in the rock format, and i'm not (just) talking about his
scatological/sexual themes, but about his social commentary.

just listen to "dumb all over", "the meek shall inherit nothing", "heavenly
bank account", "trouble every day", "hungry freaks, daddy", "we're turning
again", etc, etc. there's always a mixture of sarcasm, cynicism, humour,
pathos, poignancy and/or absurdity in all of his lyrics.

the closest, i believe, that anyone gets to his depth as a writer - for the
layers of meaning and the mixture of humour and poignancy - is the one
called partridge.

oh, and i just love "dinah-moe hum" and "titties and beer", too!

- let me assure that it's indeed a great band. Keywords: Dambuilders,
Mommyheads, and some "quirky" English band I can't quite remember the name
off. (Thanks for the tape, Max, I'll get around to buying the CD soon, I
promise!)

So you're saying you condone those bombings?:) And by the way, any
metaphysical belief deserves to be mocked, whether it is New Age,
astrology, Christianity, or Dom's unwavering devotion to ever more
obscure metal genres and bands.

Fair enough.

Neither would I, until I bought Aphex Twin's "51/13 - The Singles
Collection" - one of the tracks is a Philip Glass orchestration of AT's
"ICCT Hedral". But I'll admit that describing Aphex Twin as "British Pop"
is a bit of a stretch.

And on that trainspotting note,

Martin

PS Mark, your three CD-Rs arrived - thanks a lot! (Your server bounced my
emails a couple of times.)

like, ok. like, totally, fer sure, fer sure!

ok, that's enough of that...

well, since jimi hendrix, john lennon and frank zappa are dead, and seeing
as i have met andy partridge and all of the red hot chili peppers (both
meetings happened this year (1999) in toronto, approximately 1 mile and 5
months apart, btw) my list has been parred down somewhat, but there are a
few musicians left i'd like to meet. they are:

peter townshend - because "tommy" had such a profound effect on me in my
formative years, just as "live at leeds", "who's next" and "quadrophenia"
also did over the following years.

peter gabriel - because a lot of his music makes me feel very emotional and
it gives me chill-bumps when i hear it, such as "san jacinto",
"wallflower", "in your eyes" and many others.

brian eno - because he's a genius, pure and simple. i'd like to ask him
about certain productions he has worked on, both on his own albums and on
other people's albums.

david gilmour - because he's my favourite guitar player. i'd like to know
the technical aspects about the equipment he used on certain songs, how he
got those sounds.

keef riffhard - well, because he's keef. also because he should've been
dead 20 times over and can rock 'n' roll better than any kid 1/4th his age!

anybody else care to follow this thread?

>-With respect, Nicole "Obviously, a huge friggin football fan (American)"
Ross

with respect, david "obviously, couldn't care any less about frickin'
football (american)" oh :-)

 peace & xtc,

I got three Prefab Sprout CD's Today! I couldn't believe it!! They were
right there, in the used section. I had never heard them before, but knew a
lot of people here liked them. At any rate, they're awsome. I got Swoon, Two
Wheels Good, and a four song Picture Disc EP called Cars and Girls. They are
awsome. Thanks to everyone who said to buy them. They sound like a mix of
XTC, Squeeze, TMBG, Thomas Dolby, joe jackson, and his voice sounds like
Frank Zappa every now and then. The lyrics are so quirky. Well, anyone who
hasen't bought something by these guys, please do.

That's all,

Kevin Diamond.

What's WRONG WITH PEOPLE!!

A few weeks ago I had the mixed emotional painpleasure of having to
inform the House that I had come across some XTC rarities in a second
hand shop in London.

Well I am having to further report that last week I was back in the
aforementioned Reckless Records Berwick Street London W1 branch, and
there are STILL a LOT of XTC old rarities for sale but THIS time - and I
nearly had to sit down on my helmet - THIS TIME there was a copy of
HOMESPUN for sale. And this is a second hand store!!!!

What the blinking flip is going on???

Get down there and spend money!
