 Hillo,
I put my stereo on "karaoke" and listened to AV1. Pretty cool. It removes
the lead singing & brings everything else up. I always thought XTC's
harmonizing was a highlight, now I get to hear it uninterupted.
Have no fear Garret, there are plenty of MST3K fans out there. I have 3
originals from 1990 on tape.It is truly one of the funniest shows
ever,especially with Joel.

I'm thinking about using a 60-pencil (Prismacolor) colored pencil set that
I've had for ages to do various drawings of XTC, the band's logo, etc.,
cropping, mounting on mat board, and then having a spiffy XTC montage.

I want to use colored paper (Canson, Strathmore). Can any XTC artists give me
some tips on working with these media? Please e-mail me directly. Usually, I
just use black and white media. Tips on doing "color on color" would be
great. Never have done it before.

Thanks!

"Earthling" was very good; I don't know why it got so stepped on by
critics. If they felt he was just jumping on a bandwagon, well, it's not
the first time, and he sounded great at it. And I actually agree that
Gabrels is a very good guitarist, but I wish Bowie wouldn't let him
co-write so many songs, or, in the case of the new album, *all of them*.
I mean, he gets in a few good riffs, but come on. Has Bowie learned
nothing from Tin Machine? (Sorry, Dom.) I know, I know, Gabrels
contributed lots of music to "Earthling", too, and I'm sure he's not
holding a gun up to Bowie's head and saying "You will only use my lamest
chord progressions"; I shouldn't scapegoat. But what the hell, I'm going
to scapegoat him anyway! It's my right as a boorish American.

Same sort of thing happened on They Might Be Giants' "John Henry" album;
the song "Nyquil Driver" was retitled "AKA Driver", and it was the one
song which they didn't include the lyrics to on that album.

Finally, something all the Billy Bragg fans can agree on. (^_^)

French asked:

He plays on "Thrak" (as does Bill Bruford; they do a drum duet that's my
favorite thing on the album), and will appear on the next one in lieu of
Bruford, busy touring with Earthworks.

Chalkclimbers and Hillsliders,

A big thank you to Ian Stewart for: http://listen.to/xtcliveanddirect
It's been great to have a majority of the rarities accessible in one spot!
I've been having a great listen at work where digging out the cassettes has
always been prohibitive. Keep it up mate!

Which reminds me that Fuzzy Warbles will help a lot of us who don't burn our
own cd's to finally bury some old cassettes. Hurrah! Though I doubt anything
really flatulent will be committed to cd so we'll never be rid of those
smelly old tapes.

Beck's "Mutations" has been mentioned enough in recent digests to almost
make this topical. Okay, while listening to my then new cd "Mutations" I had
like a really real sense of deja vu when I heard "Lazy Flies". It sounded
like...an XTC song. But which one?

Ah...I know! It's ****** *****. "Hmm, pretty close", I thought. So just to
compare I placed them end to end on a tape. This was disappointing because
it did reveal them to be fairly different (the lyrics couldn't have been
more different). The songs had some similarities, not copyright infringing
similarities, but some interesting ones none the less.

be my guess,
-Bob

Hi there, you "Kreideberger",

In #301, Travis wrote:
>Subject: Them Colin Moulding Songs- Oh So Good!!!

>I'm in total agreement with what Chris (who digs White
>Music- awesome!) wrote in digest 300...<snip>

This might be a late reply to that post, but the combination of his
mention of "White Music" and Colin's songs must have started something in
my subconscious mind, as, whereas I've always said Colin writes great
songs, it took over a week before I dug out "White Music" again for the
first time in ages.

And what happened? First, listening to "WM" again just reminds me of how
great XTC has/have been right from the start. But more interestingly,
while Andy was already writing real pop gems at that point like "This is
Pop", "Statue of Liberty", and a number of others, Colin was writing new
wave excuses for making goofy noises with his voice and forgetting about
melodies. I mean, I love "I'll Set Myself on Fire" because it's so very
1977 new wave, but it's almost unbelievable to see how far Colin has come.
"Frivolous Tonight" is wonderful, an example of a really great songwriter
-- totally different in his focus and his "endpoints" than his cohort --
showing what he can do. It's melodic, it's lyrical, it's derivative and
at the same time original, it's perfectly arranged, it's...well, it's
great. And then you listen to "do what you do what you do what you do
what you do what you do to me" and think, most of the time, he didn't even
write melodies back then!

Like George Harrison in a way, Colin is an example of someone who needed
to immerse himself in the right atmosphere long enough before the magic
could come out of him. But once he figured it out, he figured it out
good! And I sure am happy I have all those records so I can witness the
development!

I still believe that XTC is/are only XTC because both songwriters
contribute and both write at such a high niveau. As much as I love Andy,
I wish Colin were more prolific -- in my eyes, it would only improve the
band, although they already are the best band going. Otherwise you
wouldn't need "XTC", you could just buy "Andy Partridge". Of course,
that'd be very good, indeed. But not as good as XTC!

And only they can "do what they do" like they do it!

- Jeff

	>Yeah, I love MST3K!!! But, Ithought that they had decided that
	>they had made enogh episodes, sort of like Seinfeld.

They were indeed cancelled. SciFry has decided that they need to be
"serious" and MST3K didn't fit. From what I heard, they were headed up by
someone who dearly loved MST3K and that's why it ended upon SlyFry in the
first place. He recently left/was terminated and was replaced by some
schmuck who absolutely *hated* MST3K, and he killed it off. It's a very
sad thing. They weren't in their prime, but it was still one of the few
consistenly funny shows on TV these days. Hopefully, someone (TNT
perhaps) will pick it up. Go a-searchin' for MST3K sites, you're bound to
find one with the campaign to resurrect the show on a decent network.

	>I agree that "hours..." doesn't sound like it's going to be a

Hmmm, perhaps I'm more of a passerby-fan, but I think "hours . . ." is
great. I love Earthling, as well (more, actually.) But I love the laid
back feel of the "hours . . ."

> >>But come on, isn't it time for Bowie to get rid of
	>Reeves Gabrels already?

Reeves is not in the touring band, if that means anything to you. And NO!
Keep Reeves around, he's a brilliant and emotional guitarist.

	>Don't be so hard on the Squealmeister! Being a big Tin Machine
	>fan - and yes, we do exist - I've always had a soft spot for
	>Gabrels' tuneless squawking. In fact, I'm rather partial to
	>tuneless squawking in general, as anyone who's heard my bands
	>would confirm!

One man's "tuneless squawking" is another man's heart-strings-being
pulled. I think Reeves ranks up there with the few modern guitarists who
can truly play from the heart, and doesn't feel the need to follow some
pre-described playing method. Robert Fripp, David Torn, Trey Gunn, Adrian
Belew and some others I can't think of at the moment are also in that
league.

	>And just about Mastelloto (or elotto ?), on which "King
	>you-know-which-colour" album does he play ? Cos the only ones I
	>got feature Trey Gunn or Bruford or Giles...

Well, first off, Trey Gunn played Stick along with Tony Levin on Thrak -
he doesn't play drums at all. Secondly, Bruford *and* Mastelotto play on
Thrak simultaneously, as well as subsequent live offereings (B'BOOM,
Thrakattak, Cirkus, & Live On Broadway) and Mastelotto is now the *sole*
drummer of King Crimson. Bruford is "temporarily" out because of his
insistence on using acoustic drums, and the new direction of KC is purely
electronic. Pick up the new King Crimson boxset release, The ProjeKcts,
for a glimpse of the future. It's truly amazing improv-based work.

XTC content: Mummer finally clicked with me the other day. Being a fairly
recent XTC-fan, I picked this one up about January or so, and was somewhat
disappointed. It's basically sat ignored for a while, save for the
occasional spin which would make me conclude once again that it didn't do
much for me. However, just the other day, I brought it to work, stuck it
in the CDRom and was prepared to again not like it. Bang! It just made
sense that day. I think it's a problem with the production. It seems to
me to be relatively lifeless among the XTC catalog. And heavy
drum-machine use doesn't help. Give me a live drummer any day over a
machine - or better yet, a live drummer & a drum machine playing together
for some interesting interplay.

Hey, Dom,

Sometimes you really make me laugh out loud, but then the really ugly,
bullying side of your personality rears to bludgeon any goodwill thus
generated.

You may well exhibit this trait in person, but over the net it just looks
pathetic, and a kind of cowardice.

Either this list is open for the public, or it isn't, and John can close
down the invitation to join the list in "Chalkhills" and keep it an
increasingly inbred and self-congratulatory clique, disdainful of outsiders
and jealously guarding "insider knowledge".

Do you think your supercilious posturing has a place on a list devoted to
the works of artists whose entire careers would indicate contempt for such
nonsense? What would they think?

Hello.

In 1993 the Edge (KDGE Dallas) put out a CD called 'The Adventure Club'.
It was pretty much acoustic songs that bands did while in the radio's
studios. Anyway, it was a limited thing and there were a bunch of cool
bands on it, including The Cranberries, Frank Black, Jellyfish, Blur, and
of course, XTC doing 'Blue Beret'.
A hard to find disc; but I just saw it on eBay. It gets better - the
guy who originally put the thing together, George Gimarc, is the seller and
he is apparently selling off his remaining stock. They are not CDRs.

Find it on eBay by searching for "XTC Blur" and it should pull up.

please note: I am in no way affiliated with KDGE, George, or anything else
- just passing along the info. I got the disc when it came out and it is
cool.

Subject: Dom's Dong! A13 Calling

Chalkpeeps,

In #5-306 James Dignan stated categorically

> the original British lyric sheet to the LP definitely said "Avon Lady" <

In one of several moments of synchronicity over the past few hours (well
come on, what are the chances of the phrase 'Ding Dong! Avon Calling'
appearing in consecutive Chalkhills posts??) I decided to have a little dig
into this one last night (stop yawning at the back) and having checked the
lyric sheet in my vinyl copy I'd have to say that 'definitely' is pushing
the envelope a little here. In fact, on the assumption that the lyric sheet
for the CD version of Black Sea was typed up from the original (pseudo?)
hand-written lyric sheet from the vinyl version, I am not surprised that
someone got it wrong because there is a decided gap between the A and the v
and the final letter could quite reasonably be interpreted as a w rather
than an n. Obviously they could have given the job to someone who knew the
music, and would therefore have realised that 'A vow lady' was utter cack,
but that would have been too easy now, wouldn't it??

and the ever subtle Dom subjectively declared:

> You're all c*nts <

In the words of Derek and Clive: who you calling a carnt, carnt??

> I still reckon you can't beat Bragg's "Peel Session" EP which includes
the legendary "A13, Trunk Road To
The Sea" <

That CD has been on my wish list for ages, but I've never seen it anywhere
(at least, not at a price that I was prepared to pay at the time - mean
bugger that I am). However, I do have the aforementioned 'A13 ...' on a CD
that came with a book called 'In Session Tonight' (which includes a list of
all the Peel sessions - for the anally-retentive like me, obviously), and
it is a cracker. That one and Ian Dury's 'Bus Driver's Prayer' would have
to be my two favourite meaningless-to-anyone-that-doesn't-know-London
tracks ;)

and finally, Ian C Stewart advertised:

> remember, it's free, it's fun and now it's located at
http://listen.to/xtcliveanddirect! <

Anyone else out there having trouble playing files DLed from this site?? I
have a fairly recent version of the RealPlayer (v6.0.5.27) but I've DLed
eight or nine .RM files and the only one I can get to play is Chickenhead,
the rest either produce an error dialog, crash the RealPlayer, or simply
don't produce any noise (ie. the counter and slider move but I don't get
any sounds). I've tried both the single song files and a couple of the
multi-song files without any success.

Cheers, Steve
