By quite a long shot. Still all the positives about it have made me keep my operatives in the field out and looking. A quick question. I am by nature rather perverse and tend to appreciate alternative takes on classic songs (hence my acceptance of Tall Tales and True's cover of the Doors' Peace Frog and my chuckling delight in the disturbing White Music version of All Along). I've played it for quite a number of non-fans and most everyone seems to hate it. Anyone else have any luck? (that was a quick question???) I'm rather partial to the Transgender Flask version as well... Dave Dobbyn. Now there's a name to conjure with (OK, OK Mr P Dant, "with which to conjure"). I'm not sure I've ever seen his name mentioned between these screens, at least not in the few years I've been reading. Dave Dobbyn. There he is again! Incredible...and I was just talking about him! In any case he's most (in) famous in some circles for a little ditty called "Slice of Heaven" in 1987 (fer crissakes it's 12 years old. Give the man a break) which was overplayed and not terribly interesting after the 407th time. Still, he's one of NZ's treasures and had a superlative album out last year called the Islander (a reference to his discovering his roots). I was lucky enough to see him play 2 sets at a recent Womad festival and he's a crack live performer too with a strong voice, fine pianist and tasteful if unspectacular guitarist. The songs fall undeniably on the pop side of the business but his distinctive voice and choice of melody/harmony echo certain other elements of the music biz I like so much (cue animal references-finn and partridge). I now own 3 albums and recommend them (Lament for the Numb and Twist are the other 2) with most of my heart (keeping something for myself for that blood pumping function it seems to perform so well) Duffy: can anyone explain why I like his solo stuff, his co-written stuff (eg Stunt by BNL) but Lilac Time's 3 albums do very close to sweet FA for me?? It's a true quandary which I'd like to remedy. Maybe I disfigured a folk singer in a former existence or something. Um, people are *surprised* that there exist people in the world (and on this list too...shhh...don't tell anyone) who DON'T GIVE A FUCK ABOUT MOTOR RACING? Which is not to say the death of a person, whoever they may be, is to be sneered at. But I can guarantee Dunks was not sneering (knowing him as I do), it was a simple reaction to what he felt was an irrelevance. And yes, there are many cross-pollinating links on this list and not all of them are interesting. In fact some of them suck. There are people reading -this- saying something along those lines. But I'm damned if we're a)going to limit content b) refrain from pointing out when someone's being as fascinating as an Ozu film (that one's for you Dunks!). I mean I found the lists of (yawn) gear a tad dullish and keyed down. Dunks probably should've done the same, but judging by the reaction to gear posts...and more gear posts...and a couple more...given that this does touch on music related issues-funnily enough-people are generally more interested in it than say, fishing (god), God (jesus), cars or baseball. Still go ahead and say what you will. I merely point out probable interest here. Gary Hooper: thanks for your stellar input into proceedings. Your wit is matched only by your intelligence and capacity for irony. I look forward to many more diatribes. Still I'd hate to limit conversation. But I happen to like Dom's schtick. And if you don't well there's really not a lot you can do about it. Oh dear, this e-mail started out so pleasantly. I think the Fountains of Wayne are making me feisty. Seb.

Dom and Harrison occasionally fall from that tightrope, as do we all, but that's a small price to pay for maintaining the health of this incredibly lively, erudite forum we allshare. Hear hear. I'm with you, you lovely man. Yes, I often talk a load of bollocks but unlike certain people I regularly take the piss out of myself, not just other people. It's the idea that somehow I (and this applies to Harrison and others as well) am trying to score points by being nasty, or by waving my ego in the air like a surrogate tadger, when in fact all I'm doing is writing stuff that I think is quite funny. Most of it is relevant, believe it or not, to this forum and the things we discuss and, as the man says, the occasional faux pas should not be a green light to the Seriousness Police to start pontificating about how we should all just love each other, man, and so on. There's enough dull-but-worthy bilge spouted on other chatlists.....somehow Chalkhills transcends all that, which is precisely why I read it and participate when, in truth, there are many bands that I like just as much as, if not more than, XTC. Honestly, check out a couple of Metal chatlists and you'll see what I mean! I need you people for my sanity!!!! >>since there is far too much phony niceness in the world and so it's kind of a relief to run across phony misanthropy once in a while. Exactly. Apart from the obvious fact that my more stroppy posts are obviously tongue-in-cheek - for a start, why would I want to piss you all off? - it needs restating that a lot of people actually enjoy a bit of gratuitous outrage and belligerence. Anyone who has ever laughed at Monty Python should see the value in that. Obviously I'm not that funny, and I wouldn't claim to be, but then judging by the reactions I get I'm clearly doing something right and some people are being entertained, in much the same way as Harrison's posts, although occasionally bewildering, are not designed to make anyone else feel stupid but are a genuine expression of his scary, twisted mind (he eats children you know.......) and therefore are far more believable and sincere than a lot of this "I dreamt about XTC last night" bollocks. Yes, I know the dreams are "real", before anyone pisses their pants, but as with my posts it makes sense to not take them too (or at all) seriously. Or something. Oh, and please leave Mr Hooper alone. I can fight my own battles - in fact, it's a hobby! - and off-list flaming is a bit lame (as I have discovered on numerous occasions.......that "delete" button is getting worn out!). Anyway, the nurses have upped his medication until he calms down.... >>This list has been funny, annoying, interesting, intelligent, idiotic, useless, and invaluable. It keeps us guessing, and that's why I'm still here. Exactly - well said. Quite why this has to be pointed out time and time again is anyone's guess, but if you find me or anyone else objectionable in some way, DON'T READ THE POSTS!!! SCROLL THE F*CK DOWN!!!!! I won't pretend that I'm not occasionally annoyed by some of the oh-so-worthy outbursts that appear on Chalkhills from time to time, but why get mad? Get even or get silly, that's my motto. Silly is best. >>I suppose it comes down to songs like "The Loving." While we may chose to hate things within our society, we're still supposed to try to love the people. It pains me to admit it, but I agree with William on this one. Of course sport doesn't suck and, of course, greedy people do. But in a broader sense this "loving" thing is relevant to Chalkhills in general...it should be taken as read that we all love XTC and are therefore a "community" of sorts, however keen you might be to stove my head in with a rusty spanner, and so it should also be assumed that despite our many differences, no one on the list is trying to make anyone else miserable or spoil anyone else's fun. It's incredibly arrogant to assume that I'm an arsehole just because I'm not scared to be a bit over-the-top and hyperbolous in my defence of certain things. Nor is it reasonable to berate me (or anyone else) for swearing or being disparaging about someone else's taste in music (or whatever).......fight back, by all means, but don't fall into the trap of taking yourself too seriously because I don't, Harrison doesn't, "Barking" Bob Crain doesn't, Ms Heller doesn't and nor, I suspect, do Andy or Colin (although they'd clearly be scared shitless by the level of devotion on display....I bet they don't have discussions about alternate track listings on import CDs when they're down the Kebab & Calculator of an evening!!!). >>And I don't mean to make light of your discomfort at the word "cunt," but you should bear in mind that the word is less of a taboo in British slang than in American I, on the other hand, do mean to make light of your discomfort at the word "cunt". It's a word. Get over it. You ****. He's right though, it's a perfectly normal term of abuse, particularly (I suspect) among "young males" (whatever that means) in the UK. Why, only last night Lodger No.1 called me a cunt for using all the hot water. He was right, it was a cunty thing to do. But I'm the landlord, so tough shit buddy. Incidentally, I'm writing some sleevenotes for an Earache Records triple-CD compilation thing (called "Immortalised"), due for release early next year and I've managed to get a mention for XTC in there! Coolio. Basically one of Earache's bands, Misery Loves Co. (a Swedish Industrial/Metal type thing), covered "Complicated Game" on their second album, so I have used this fact as an example of the record label's open-minded attitude, and the broad musical church they preside over. Obviously the real reason is that I wanted to plug the band (and you never know, there might be a couple of Morbid Angel fans who suddenly find themselves in need of a quality pop fix!), albeit in a very minor way. Just thought I'd mention it! I hereby predict a victory for England at Wembley tonight. COME ON ENGERLAND!!!!!!! Cheers, Dom "You always were a headache and you always were a bore" Lawson.

(Hey, Brit-speakers! Is this what you guys call 'trainspotting'?) I was watching a special on PBS (the US public broadcasting system) called New York: A Documentary Film. They used Frost Circus as the background music for a scene where images of late-ninetenth century NYC architecture were shown while a poem by Walt Whitman was read in a voice-over. I thought, that's a pretty obscure little piece of incidental music. I wondered how the music editor of the film came into contact with the song. Anyway, just thought if anybody would care, it would be some the folks on this list.

Sounds like HERESY, but I have to agree with Dan. I was surprised, while reading Song Stories, to hear Andy describe Funk Pop a Roll as "...very Tamla/Motown." It doesnt sound a thing like that to me! Thank god for confusion! These are excellent examples that illustrate how beneficial the cross-pollination of American and British music has been. The Beatles, and Cream, heard Muddy Waters, and Little Richard, and emulated them, creating: She's a Woman, and Sunshine of your Love. Americans heard these (and many others) and created: "You're gonna Miss Me (13th fl Elevators), and Purple Haze (Hendrix) , and on and on and on... to this day. XTC, of course have used the Beatles, Beach Boys et al for inspiration, and they in turn, have been a wonderful inspiration to bands on both shores. With so many benefits to Anglo/American cultural cross-pollination, it seems that a few ruffled feathers from the use of the word cunt, seems a small price to pay! ;-) Steve "Hands Across the Water" Oleson Austin, TX

In fact, however, upon listening to the entire album, it's actually a very interesting work, and quite cohesive in a very unusual way. Plus "Coffee and TV" is a fabulous and cool single, one of my favorite of the year. Sting, Brand New Day - The album is spotty, but for me the price is worth it just for the title track, one of my favorites of the year. I wouldn't be too insulted by this statement because, in reality, regardless of whether you like and/or create electronic music - it really isn't the same as collaborating with other musicicans on live instruments. Example: One night my drummer boyfriend, his guitarist and I got to drinking and hours later switched on a Roland 505 AKA the Groove Box and starting running pre-programs and tweaking them.
