Subject: Happy Harvest Season To All

I just want to say "Happy Holidays" to all Chalkies. Ah shucks, I can't
help turning into a Hallmark card around this time of the year. I know
I can be a brazen, obnoxious handful most of the time, but deep down I'm
a brazen, obnoxious handful that truly appreciates the group that has
formed around a fabulous band.

I'm not always here with a pocket full of witticisms or incredible
earth-shattering news about the boys - but heck, isn't this list more
about socializing with those that share a common thread?

Do you really think that if we were all at a party together, the only
thing we'd talk about is XTC in calm, even tones? Noo, after a while
we'd show our playful, sarcastic, honest, brash sides - telling each
other to "piss off" with the biggest grins on our faces.

________________

On another note:

I just watched the documentary "Modulations" for the second time last
night. It's a film about the history of electronic music - focusing in
on the last few years of the techno scene. You see all of these fast
punks spinning and scratching from New York to London to Tokyo, and what
do I see in the background of one DJ's get-up? Yup, you guessed it - a
big poster of what looked liked the "Mummer" cover with XTC printed down
the side.

OK, so some of you are chuckling - thinking of what it TRULY is alluding
to. I don't know, it would be cool to think that XTC had an influence
on the DJ/electronic music scene - the BAND, not just the DRUG. (grin)

Best, Best To All,

- May O'Mahoney

BTW the show that XTC played acoustically on was AL TV. For a week MTV let
"Weird" Al Yankovic have a show of his own and one day XTC played
"Scarecrow People" on it. I've got it on tape w/ Al's introduction. The
rest of the show was quite forgettable.

It's really difficult to find nowadays - occasionally copies pop up on
eBay. I'd be happy to make anyone a CD-R copy - usually I have qualms
about copying legitimate releases, but Beeswax is really impossible to find.

And Kevin Diamond ventured:

Done! Just fax it over....

And is it just me, or has the list (excepting Dom and Harrison) been kind
of dull lately? Rather light on XTC content, IMHO.

I'll be in line to see Toy Story 2 pretty soon. It says
Randy Newman has some more songs it it. I'm wondering if,
after the Giant Peach debacle, Andy's sworn off that
whole outlet?

Also, after a year in new digs, the LP cleaner has been
found again, in a misplaced box of CDs and tapes. Now I
can use the turntable!

That brings us to our study questions: If one has spent
a year with some recorded music hermetically sealed, and not
turned the house upside down looking for those items,
(1) does that person own enough CDs/tapes already, and
(2) how important are those to have gone missing for a year?

Mad but in miniature,
Karl

I've heard of this great band called XTC. Maybe you are interested...
Anyway, discussions re: whether Dom is a c**t aside, I was intrigued by a
recent post from Iain Murray that stated that "Andy Partridge is an
anagram of Dirty Red Pagan". I came up with a few more.
For Dave Gregory: "O, Very Red Gag!", "Greg or Davey?", "Do Grey Grave"
For Colin Moulding: the very apt "Old Coin Mug Nil" or the more apt
"Mug in Cold Loin"
For Barry Andrews: "Raw Sabre Nyrd" and the extremely apt "Raw Berry Nads"
For Terry Chambers: "Yerr Best Charm", "Met Cherry Bars" and, the best of
all, "Beer Scar Rhytm"
Andy Partridge is either "Partying Dread", "Dead Party Grin" or (my
favorite) "Dead Prying Rat"
Finally, for those in the know, we have the following:
Red Curtain = "Retina Crud"
Dave Cartner = "Rent Cadaver"
and Ian Reid = "i.e. Nadir"
To wrap this up, let me say that Dom is definitely a c**t (though
a very nice one) & I am a vegetarian who is very happy that tofu
tastes nothing like meat.

Happy Thanksgiving!

I went through Swindon on the train from Bath to Oxford, and I

Hey Chalkers,

I occasionally listen to the Spinner Internet music player while I work,
and they have a new channel called "Y1K Rock," which plays a rotation of
songs from a list of the Top 100 Rock Songs of the 20th Century, as
compiled by their "DJs," or whoever. The interesting thing to note is that
upon perusal of said list, it appears that they've chosen "Making Plans for
Nigel" as one of those very same Top 100! Now of course I'm sure many of us
would argue with that choice of XTC song, or more likely the choice of
**only one** XTC song, but nonetheless it's nice to see them not being
overlooked! Viva l'XTC!

I thought "Living Through Another Cuba" was about the Afghanistan
conflict. It does seem like it was written about a current even instead
of looking back on Vietnam, and the Soviets entered Afghanistan late in
the year before Black Sea was released. Another song I know of that
mentions the Afghanistan thing is "Don't Count on Me" by Gruppo Sportivo.

You probably don't have this, but there's a song called "The 'Wish I Had

Metaphysicians. And then there's They Might Be Giants' "Ana Ng", which is
about a girl with a Vietnamese-sounding name who lives on the other side
of the world from New York, e.g. the general vicinity of Vietnam.

I am not poor, I went to college, own my own business, and have a wife and

Actually, most evidence points to Christ being born in july. How do I know
this? I've read to many Tom Robbins books.

you see, Before Christ came into play, Europe had another god, The Horned
One, the Old God. He was described to have Horns and harry, hooved
feet. He was jolly, and danced a lot, and celebrated Fertility and
Joyousness. When Christianity came to town, the christians decided to
sabatoge this god by making their devil, Satan, described the same
way. Eventually, this god became the christian devil, and Christianity
took over many of the Old God's holidays. What we now celebrate as
Christmas was origianlly a winter celebration of the Old God.

Now you're all bored and/or angry, aren't you? Anyway, I didn't explain
this very well. If you want to know more about this, read Even Cowgirls
Get The Blues, by Tom Robbins. T.R. was a Religion major in college before
he became a Novelist, so his novels are packed with religous references
and explinations. Mr. Robbins, like Mr. Partridge, is an Athiest.
