I've waited until nearly the last minute of 1998 to decide on my best
for the past year, but here it is. For what it's worth.
Robert Wegmann: "Red Hair"
Far and away my favourite for 1998. An excellent EP (or
mini-album) in which Mr. Wegmann turns from straight Beach Boys and
Beatles inspired pop to something a little grander. Elements of
King Crimson and Peter Gabriel pop up in these rich tableaux of
sound, with bits of world musicks thrown in as connecting passages.
Mr. Wegmann has taken up the Stick and married a concert
accordionist from Russia, both of which feature prominently in this
recording. Really, I cannot recommend this highly enough. Mail

L'affaire Louis Trio: "Mobilis in Mobile"
Okay, so this one's from 1993, but I didn't discover it until this
year, and I've played it quite a bit. I suppose it would help to
understand French, but so far I've enjoyed the album quite enough in
my ignorance. My sister tells me they sound like XTC. I suppose
they do, in that they mine that vein of power pop, but their
influences are more varied than that. In any case, I have been
playing this one a lot lately.
Brian Wilson: "Imagination"
The production is a bit on the cheesy side, but Mr. Wilson writes
and sings some great songs here. And it's not all nice. He plays
with the production for a bit of the ugly underneath, especially on
the album closer "Happy Days".
Nick Heyward: "The Apple Bed"
Not as good as his previous, "Tangled", this one is still chock full
of Beatles and 80s pop inspired tracks. Mr. Heyward may wear his
influences on his sleeve, so that one can list them easily (The Jam,
The Beatles, XTC, My Bloody Valentine...) but his melodies are
infectious, his performances are convincing, and his lyrics are
never trite, though they may lean that way. Basically a good solid
listen. And this album contains one of my favorite tracks of this
year, "The Man You Used To Be".
"Chalkhills' Children '98"
Perhaps there's a little bias involved, or perhaps it is, as has
been said, that this album is the best we can do until the new XTC
album comes out. In any case, CC98 is the third in a series of XTC
tributes compiled and performed by subscribers to Chalkhills, the
official XTC fans 'net mailing list. And it is by far the best of
the series. This tribute contains some excellent interpretations of
XTC songs. (For ordering details, see

Slapp Happy: "Ca Va"
Yes, it's true. Slapp Happy reunited for an album, after more than
20 years. And it's a good one. Dagmar Krause, Peter Blegvad, and
Anthony Moore have definitely not been sleeping for those
intervening years. And yet they have managed to remain both outside
the mainstream and interesting. Another of my favorite tracks of
this year are on this album ("Scarred for Life").
Yazbek: Tock
This Yazbek guy is a nut. A nut who writes some twisted and
eminently hummable pop. Ya gotta love songs like "Tool Calendar
Girl" and "Here Come The Ducks".
The Negro Problem: "Post Minstrel Syndrome"
Not without its problems, this disc had its share of memorable
melodies. I usually programmed out the "bonus tracks", but
nonetheless this album spent a lot of time in the player.
The Bevis Frond: "North Circular"
This double album has some of Mr. Frond's best work in a few years,
but it's also sprawling and overwhelming. And has one of the best
rants I've heard in ages (since Ice-T's "This One's For Me",
perhaps). And the live gig at the Great American Music Hall in San
Francisco was one of the best of this year. Nick Saloman's electric
dulcimer solo had to be heard (and seen) to be believed. (P.S. I
was joking when I said "Mr. Frond".)

It's not that Andy isn't a good guitarist, he's probably better than most out there, but my humble opinion is that he can't hold a candle to Dave. I can tell you that I identify a lot of their songs as much by the guitar riffs as the melody lines. This has been reinforced listening to 'Transistor Blast' and noticing that, in my humble opinion, they sound a hell of a lot better with Dave than with Barry. Speaking of his reconstructions, I had almost forgotten that I had this (It's on vinyl and I haven't had a turntable for quite a while now), but is anyone familiar with the compilation 'Through The Looking Glass'? Under the name 'Colin's Hermits', they did a version of 'Strawberry Fields Forever' that sounds exactly like the original, with the exception that it's Andy singing and not John Lennon. Even moreso around Christmas. And of course, she did escape from the world where they make beautiful girls, but you knew that already, didn't you ? Swindon sighting - an unexpected one. I was making a CDr for a friend that is a huge Moody Blues fan of the Justin Hayward solo album - Songwriter. I had never got around to reading the liner notes, I assumed that they would be the same as on the vinyl release. New liner notes ! What is this, Christmas ? So I quote from page 8 (page 8 of 11 ! in a CD !) : "Going back to basics, Justin Hayward was born in Dean Street, Swindon, Wiltshire, on October 14th, 1946, just a stone's throw from the magnificence which was the works of the Great Western Railway. It wasn't long, however, before the family moved to a Berkshire village. ...... stuff edited ..... Shortly after his tenth birthday, the Haywards returned, lock, stock, and barrel to Swindon where Justin attended Commonweal Grammar. ...... Parthenon Huxley is joining ELO Part II as guitarist, staring in mid-January 1999 (http://www.elopart2.demon.co.uk/phux.html). He's replacing the outgoing Phil Bates (and why the hell I know anything about ELO Part II is, a pal at work is a ridiculously big ELO fan and I have to admit a great fondness for ELO up through "Out Of The Blue", and so I went with him up to Wilmington DE to see them play, and they were amazing (if you like ELO, that is)). ELO Part II has three original members of ELO plus the original orchestrator, and does put out an album of originals (which mostly suck bags in my opinion) every few years. Could the involvement of P. Hux actually lead to some good new ELO songs? I for one am metaphorically holding my breath. C. Andy is a great, great guitarist, and so I don't think XTC needs any help in that department for Apple Venus II. I am expecting the major effect of Dave's absence to be felt in the arrangements. When I was at Rockfield I was pleasantly surprised to find Colin extremely involved in the mixing of each song . . . even Andy's songs. He was very attentive to details and made numerous good suggestions on how to improve things as the mixes progressed. I'd even say that he was sometimes more present and involved in Andy's songs than Andy was (at least while I was there.) Recently, the Wall of Sound website (http://www.wallofsound.com) ran a "Top 100 albums of the 60s-90s" poll, where readers got to vote for their favorite albums. Some folks on the usenet group rec.music.classical.recordings got wind of it, and wanted to get some classical representation on the list. I'm not sure how they came up with the final result, but they all agreed on the Bernstein/NY Philharmonic recording of Mahler's 9th Symphony, recorded in the 60s. So they all did it as a write-in vote, and voila, it made #6 on the write-in portion of the tally. The moral: a concerted effort CAN make a difference. While TVT and Cooking Vinyl might not be releasing singles, they might "work" an individual song to radio to promote the album. It would be interesting to find out if there is such a track. And if there is, it will be easy to choose which one to request from your local radio station. Is there any way we can find out? (Cooking Vinyl, are you listening?) Note that radio play is treated separately from sales--for the Soundscan sales chart, check out Billboard (http://www.billboard.com) and for radio play in the USA, there's the Gavin report (http://www.gavin.com). When you look at the Gavin report, you'll see that the top songs or albums (depending on the format) are judged by the volume of "spins"--and the way we'll get XTC on the list is to all request a single track. If Idea and its distributors aren't going to promote an individual track to radio, I'll volunteer to run a survey to get a Chalkhills consensus on which Apple Venus song has the most commercial potential. What we're after here friends is not the song we as individuals like the best, but which one will suck the most radio listeners into liking XTC and rushing out to buy the album. At this point, I envision a selection process like the one used to elect a political party leader here in Canada--there are any number of candidates on the first ballot, and then only the top vote-getters survive to the second ballot, and on until a single candidate has a clear majority. I just bought two albums that have quickly slipped into my "Best of 1998" list: Babybird's "There's Something Going On" (available in the UK only, but I got it at the Virgin Megastore), and Tori Amos's "From the Choirgirl Hotel." Babybird's album is astonishingly good -- quick, witty, "urbanpop," with a hint of sarcasm holding the album together. He does the alternative thing ten times better than Beck, in my opinion, because his stripped down songs remain incredibly interesting *and* inventive at the same time. Truly, folks: this is some of the best stuff I have ever heard. The Tori album is, thank God, her best thing since "Little Earthquakes." "Jackie's Strength" is great, as is "Spark." In fact, the whole thing rocks. Try 'em out, and let me know what you think. And don't forget: a month and a few weeks to AV! -Ben

I haven't heard anything as yet, but Triple J Radio have started playing a few XTC tracks. Since the week before Christmas, I've heard "Ball & Chain", "Love At First Sight", and Primus' cover of "Scissor Man" (and the DJ actually knew it was a cover of an XTC track!). No prizes for guessing what I got from my beloved this Christmas. A lovely shiny copy of TB and the new Busta Rhymes album. Fantastic. And what a treat-fest TB turned out to be. Superb versions of many of my favourite XTC tunes (a special thumbs aloft for "I'm Bugged" and "Roads..."), and two live CDs of such undeniable excellence that I am now officially VERY DEPRESSED at never having seen the band live. Apart from Gang Of Four, I can't think of another band from that period that kicked anywhere near as much buttola. The Black Sea-era gig is particularly arse-widening in its toe-tapping glory. Also, thanks to Sue & Don Parker - guardians & supervisors of the unruly Dom muse - Song Stories has been inwardly digested and thoroughly enjoyed, despite the author's claim that the British "deserved Margaret Thatcher". Er, no, I don't think so Mr. Farmer. No one deserved that, stupid & apathetic though "we" may have been... Cracking book though, and yet another reason to drag my crusty vinyl LPs from my silver wardrobe of delights.... Anyway, mere weeks until the rebirth of our favourite plank-spanking heroes, who are the lucky sods who'll have early access to the new masterpiece? No gloating allowed! Just give us the lowdown......and make it snappy! Somehow I suspect that most of us will have the same Album Of The Year this time around..... Cheers & here's to more Chalkhills escapades in 1999.
