I'm having a panic attack knowing you're going to bring up the damn political
belief thread.
Look, it's very simple:
Political beliefs do not necessarily have anything to do with one's enjoyment
of music either way!!!!
Why must you waste bandwidth being so damn narrow-minded? I have listened to
Mr. Limbaugh for years; in that time he has played XTC,Squeeze,Talking Heads,
Dave Brubeck,Miles Davis, James Brown, Led Zeppelin, The Beatles and about a
zillion other things that might surprise you.(James Brown, for instance is a
lifelong member of the Republican party). Maybe there's other who don't
conform to your world/social view. I guess we should make sure they're not
buying anything by XTC (never mind their money is the same color as everyone
else's, the band, I'm sure wouldn't want tainted conservative money)!
Anyway, that's my rant for the day, please, feel free to go back to discussing
produced vs. overproduced.

>I've just read a lot of the stuff about XTC's drummers over the years
>and there seems to be one other element about a drummer that defines
>their 'quality': their selection of drums/cymbals. Selecting
>distinctive drum tunings and cymbal types is halfway to getting your
>style. Dave Mattacks will tell you that any day (he's a very rigid
>methodist in the way he tunes his drums

The following quotes are from an article in DIRTY LINEN :

. "When people ask me what I do, I always say, `musician.' That's not to say
that I'm not proud of being a drummer. But, I'd like to consider myself, for
all my lack of ability on the instrument, as a musician first, somebody who
has a certain amount of knowledge about music."

"I'm more concerned with tone and sound and cymbals and response and that
whole side of the instrument than I am with any abilities or any kind of
facility on the kit. I'm very interested in the drums. I concentrate a lot."

Each song on the album uses a different snare drum and cymbal set-up. "They
all sound different," Mattacks said. "I love to pick the tone colors. I
picked the cymbals and snare drum to suit each track."

Fairport provided an entry into a much different world. "This was a real
turnaround for me," Mattacks said. "I knew that there was an alternative
type of music and I wanted to be involved. It was almost like a light bulb
going on," he recalled. "It had quite an effect on how I saw and listened to
music. It really changed how I played and how I wanted to play. I started
listening to songs and not to licks and technique. I started becoming much
more aware of form and lyrics."

Mattacks' moment of enlightenment was reflected in his approach to the
drums. "It made me appreciate even more straight-forward drummers who swung.
I became less concerned with trying to show everybody how clever I thought I
was and more concerned with trying to support the song and the singer."

Jazz has been a constant source of inspiration. "I've heard all the rock
drummers I need," Mattacks said. "I get more inspiration from listening to
Paul Motian, Jack DeJohnette and Tony Williams. There's a lot of great cats
coming up. That's what I'm listening to these days. It satisfies me more. I
really like to play it. I'm trying to get better."

Not that I'd take anything with the words "News of the World" in
it seriously (those of you not in the UK need not ask), but this
article contains so many inaccuracies it's almost unreal. I give
the person who typed it the benefit of the doubt.

>From today's "Music News of the World" (in the online magazine Addicted to
>Noise):
>
>XTC End Silence With New Label Deal And Box Set
>Transistor Blast is the group's first album since 1992's Nonsuch.

Well, it's not a studio album, and much of it has been out before,
and if such things count then what about 'Fossil Fuel' or 'The
Greatest' or whatever that other one was called. For that matter,
what about 'Drums And Wireless'?

>XTC, which had been with Virgin UK since 1977, haven't released any new
>material since 1992's Nonsuch.

Apart from 'Cherry In Your Tree' etc.

>The band signed with TVT in the summer, and TVT released a live XTC box set,
>Transistor Blast, on Dec. 8. Three of the box's four discs feature
>performances recorded for the BBC in 1977 and 1989; the fourth captures a
>1980 performance at London's Hammersmith Palais.

Clearly didn't listen to disc 3 very carefully.

>The band stopped touring in 1992 because of Partridge's stage
>fright.

They toured in 1992? Damn!

>The live music compiled on Transistor Blast represents "songs we did from
>'77 to '89 and it was the best of the stuff they didn't erase," Partridge
>said. "They're not too different from the record[s], although they're played
>with a bit more fire."

Didn't hear many 1989 songs in the 1980 concert. OK, I suppose the
session tracks were sort of live-(ish)-in-studio. Perhaps I'm being
somewhat picky here.

>XTC were formed in 1977 in Swindon, an industrial town in Northern England.

Weird. It was in Wiltshire a couple of weeks ago when I went from London
to Swansea on the train. It was still there when I came back too.
Atlases aren't too expensive, are they?

>Partridge, for his part, said he couldn't care less what fans might think of
>the new records.

Can we quote him on that? There's a world of difference between the
above statement and what they actually quoted him as saying:

>"I'm not interested in winning back old fans," he said. "I don't care if the
>devil is stoking their asses in hell. I'm just interested in making music. I
>suppose I'll panic if nobody buys it. But if people like it, they like it.
>I'm not going to ram it down anybody's throat."

Well, sorry about that. I nearly resisted but it was that bit about
Swindon being in the north that finally did it.

As for the best of '98, I've come up with a list of 10 albums but have
yet to pick an overall winner. Hopefully next weekend. BTW, to the
person who picked Alain Bashung's album, did you realise that Martyn
Barker of Shriekback (Barry Andrews' band post-XTC) played on it? Oh
yes, and to the person who picked the Luka Bloom album, I'm very
jealous - it's not out yet in the UK.

It's very similar, and might even be a different mix of the same
session, but it's not identical. At least on my copy of TBE, TWO
starts off with two a capella lines which aren't on the TB version.

Actually I had an impression that ``Poor Skeleton'' might be the album
version 'cause it sounded so familiar, so I put it on one CD player and
the O&L version on another, and switched back and forth. They're not
the same -- it probably just seemed familiar from Drums & Wireless --
but what was interesting was how faithful the performance was to the
original recording in tempo and structure. I could just cut back and
forth and be in the same part of the recording I switched to as the one
I'd left. Oh, this one has a backing vocal or a sound not on the other,
but what really comes across is the raw energy (and higher dynamic
level overall) of the TB version.

You'll notice that there's other BBC stuff here that wasn't included with
TB & the 'Acoustical Oranges & Lemons' section is excellent quality &
features Andy in typically humorous form! Odd how they do several
medley's of older songs, even though their promoting Oranges & Lemons!
(Chalk-Head Jeff Ogata points out)

I wouldn't let it go for any less than $20 though...
Highest bid by the end of next Saturday gets it.

I'm happy to trade a cd-r or tape version if you have something that
interests me.

Offers?

Thanks!

And if there was so much stuff from the interviews left out, how about

happy to donate some transcription time so we could all read just what

Yeah, i know, dream on mate. Ah well, not long till the apple lands!

BTW, i used to have a couple of lovely xtc videos which have been

someone would return them to me one of these days....

Well ladies and gentlemen,

What can I say? It's been a long time but the time has come again! The
Nigels, America's finest musical tribute to XTC is back
with a vengence. We are planning shows for early spring, and we won't stop
until we see you all! XTC,XTC, and nothing but XTC!! Yes, we did take a
long break since 1994, but it was time to get some affairs in order.
Drummer Tommy Joyner opened a new recording studio in Philadelphia called
Milkboy. GuitaristVocalist Timothy O'Byrne recorded an album with his band
the Hunt Club at Tommy's studio. Bassist/vocalist Kieran Mulvaney recorded
albums with Spite and Malice and joined the Hunt Club too. And
Guitarist/vocalist Kevin Cavanaugh did anything he damn well pleased!! The
Nigels have their own website where you can follow their whereabouts, as
well as contact them about playing your favourite songs live! Please tell
us where you are from and any info you'd like to pass on, and we'll keep you
abreast of the dates. Looking forward to hearing from you, Cheers, Timothy

Chalkies,

I just saw a TV spot for the new Virgin Records 25th Anniversary
collection, and our boys are prominently mentioned in the voice-over! Of
course, so are about 40 other artists, but at least they made the cut.
The song included on the comp is "Making Plans for Nigel."

Mike Oldfield's "Tubular Bells III" has been living in my car for the
past week. It's amazing.

Is anyone else watching the M-TV video cliche thing? "Weird Al" is

doesn't that new Sheryl Crow song sound like Aimee Mann?

Per asked in 5-53...

>> Since CDs sounds so bad, I really hope that Apple Venus will be released
on vinyl. Is there anyone out there that have any information from the
record company? <<

I *do* have that information and sadly, it's bad news. I actually e-mailed
Cooking Vinyl and asked them whether they'd be releasing AV on vinyl and I
received a reply that there were no plans to.

It was actually very good of them to reply, most record companies wouldn't
bother. They did day that if there was enough interest they might do a vinyl
release but I have to agree with them that that's pretty unlikely.

I have to agree with Per, listening to CDs is a pretty grim experience.
There are over 100 albums that I would have bought over the last few years
had they been released on vinyl. An album has to be exceptional for me to
purchase it on CD. CDs are great if you're one of these people who has music
on as a background thing but if you actual sit down and *listen* to music
they're truly horrendous. CDs, along with the awful production techniques of
the 90s, have massively reduced the amount of time I spend listening to
music. In the sales after Christmas I was far more interested in going to
the video section of HMV than going to look round the music to see what was
about.

If only people listened to good hi-fi, and didn't believe the marketing hype
that the record companies put out to brainwash people into believing CD was
a viable way of listening to music, we'd still be able to listen to music in
the analogue domain instead of having our ears blown off by the harsh pap
that is digital audio.

Ah well, that's "progress".

Subject: A little clarification about Andy's "stage fright"?

Okay, I've been confused for years over the references to Andy's supposed
breakdown when XTC was on tour in the 80's.

I remember reading in "Chalkhills & Children" (by Chris Twomey), that Andy
started having panic attacks on stage due to "fatigue and road weariness",
not due to some extreme aversion to performing itself. My take on his
avoidance of touring today is that he's painfully aware of the effects that
the road has on his mental health, and he doesn't want a repeat episode.

This interpretation makes plenty of sense to me, because if you've ever
spent time on the road you know how distorted your sleeping/eating/thinking
patterns can become. This has been pretty thoroughly researched over the
years by the US military [big surprise!] in order to minimize the effects of
jet lag on troops being sent across the world to combat situations. I
remember reading that ordinary jet lag can cause extreme reactions in
certain people including panic attacks, hallucinations, and extreme mood
shifts. I myself experienced a humiliating, all-consuming panic attack after
landing in New Delhi after not sleeping for two days. I got the shakes,
starting seeing floating geometric patterns and fireworks bursts, and became
nauseated and completely disoriented. I could barely walk, and my cognitive
abilities almost shut down. It was like having the world's worst acid trip.

While I've seen no reference to Andy experiencing symptoms like these,
everything I've read about his episodes points to extreme fatigue rather
than some kind of phobia.

What do you think?

I heard it too, I'll take my XTC any way I can get it. Rush also
uses the intros to several Todd Rundgren/Utopia songs; so far I've
heard "Itch In My Brain," "Too Much Water," "Zen Machine," and
"Princess Of The Universe," all from their out of print albums on the
defunct Network and Passport labels in the early to mid-80's. Great
albums and worth picking up if you find them used or remaindered. I
used to listen to Rush a lot more than I do now; I still tune in when
I'm working but I don't find him as interesting now that it's pretty
much a forgone conclusion that we'll either have a lame duck Bill
Clinton in office until next year or AlGore. Either way we'll have a
centrist Democrat in office, only in Gore's case he's sort of the
Democrat answer to Ronald Reagan, his environment fixation aside. In
other words, a decent enough guy but about as dumb as a bag of
rocks. I'm still in hysterics over Dee Snider of Twisted Sister saying
to him at the PMRC hearings(after he told Frank Zappa what a big fan
of his work he was)"So Al, you gonna tell me what a big fan of my work
you are too?" Personally I prefer some of Rush's replacements,
especially Walter Williams and Tony Snow, both of whom are very
intelligent and fair-minded. MIchael Medved should still with being a
film critic though. What a sourpuss. "Beavis and friend" indeed. Can't
bring himself to say butthead on the air.

Sorry if most of you have no interest in the above, but I mostly
listen to talk radio on the job these days, though if Rush starts
boring me I prefer an XTC cassette...

Do you think that vinyllovers live in the past?

Well, some seems to think so. All I say is - listen. Your ears will hear
the difference.

So use your turntable and spin some LP:s. It will make your CD-player
live in the past. Right before writing this I enjoyed Englist Settlement.
I bought it 1982 and it still sounds great. The CD-version is not even
close.

But I agree with Jill Oelsen that vinyl has a nostalgic feeling. I think
it has to do with that an LP has greater looks...

One more thing. Someone asked if the orginal Jules Verne's Sketchbook has
a blank cassette. The answer is no. The title and the songs are printed
on the cassette.

Isn't it time for an XTC interview on VH-1's "Behind the Music"?
Either that, or a "Whatever Happened To?" segment. Their story has
as much pathos, if not the usual drug habits (if you don't count Valium)
as any of the other sad sacks they put on there. The "stage fright" angle
hasn't really been covered on the show yet - now's their chance!
Also, since XTC actually pioneered the "Unplugged" format for
sister network MTV, they owe our remaining two blokes some air-time
for that.

Cheers-

Will

Hi Chalkfellows!

Happy New Year to all of you, first of all.
I've just sent dear Mr Relph a new pic for the Archives, which I took
from "The Cartoon History of Rock'n'Roll", you should be finding it in
the galleries under Miscallenous in a couple of days.
What's more, regarding the Top albums in 98, I just have to add one more
to my list, which I bought a couple of days ago for a friend and
promptly fell in love with:
Refused - The Shape Of Punk To Come
Anyone out there who likes a bit of hardcore as well as drum and bass as
well as complicated song structures should check these guys from Sweden
out, it's a terrific album. Anyone who likes Thought Industry (though I
guess I'm the only Chalkster who does) will love it.
So, that's all for now, there's more news to come, but I'm not quite
ready with it, so that has to wait. (Mysterious, innit ?!)
Bye everyone !

Now you have done it.

"Chalkers, Some of you disappoint me."

Stop it you are killing me! Who are you my mother?

"I mean you would rather buy a Japanese import than the US version."

Nope! I plan on buying both and the UK and the French and the Italian
and any other country they deem to sell it in. I am a collector I will
add them to my collection. If I don't have a collection then what kind
of a collector does that make me? Some people collect baseball cards,
I happen to enjoy searching for and trading or buying XTC albums. Does
this make me a bad person? Could I get twenty years for excessive
purchasing of the Drums and Wires LP? Get real!!

"I think most Japanese imports are too expensive."

Cheaper than a night out at the bar and alot of other things, but you
are entitled to your opinion.

"I know yeah they would have extra tracks, but I can't afford
Japanese imports."

Yeah extra tracks which justifys the additional cost. Just because you
cannot afford it how dare you be disapponted in me because I can.

"Man, you people just don't get it."

No Molly you don't get it. I am getting it. I may even buy two!!

I thank you for your opinions, but I would never be self righteous
enough to tell others how to spend they're hard earned money.

Just saw the XTC / 3 Wise Men 45 - Thanks for Christmas posted on the Ebay
Auction website for a starting bid of $45.00 (youch!) but there hasn't been
any takers. It was first posted on 28dec98 and nobody has upped the bid.

There were 54 items found with "xtc" in them.

Hello Chalkies

Rogerio of Brazil writes: "I completely fell in love with those melodies
and sounds all over the record [oranges and lemons]. I also bought the Nonsuch
CD..." Well, Rogerio, welcome to a great adventure, and be happy because you
can only go up from there!
