Yes, there was, and still IS (as far as I know) a band called LMNOP, and they're from Atlanta, GA. The same guys who do the notorious, hilarious and wicked sick-humor zine "Baby Sue" (and Baby Sue's sister zine "Baby Sue Review," which always gives good reviews to local pop bands such as Kenny Howes and the YEAH!) are also the guys behind the band LMNOP. They have been putting out records since about the mid-80's, and probably have more than 3 albums. The music, from what I've heard of it, is pretty straightforward happy-pop stuff with some off-kilter lyrical themes. Not quite as extreme as "Baby Sue" though. As far as XTC is concerned...this may just be me, but I think Apple Venus is going to be one of the most critically acclaimed new releases of this year. Hopefully it will also sell well, but judging from the average listener's average tastes...eh, I guess the Offspring's new cd will still be flying off the shelves. But, those of us in the know KNOW what XTC are doing, and it's irrevelant whether they achieve material success or not. If they do, it can't be said that they're "selling out"--it should rather be marvelous to see average listeners actually recognizing greatness. Mozart was not appreciated by the masses in his day. However, he WAS greatness, and it took the world years to fully comprehend exactly what he was doing. Just like with XTC--I can't recall EVER listening to an XTC record for the first time and going, "WOW, this is GREAT!"--I had to listen to it a few more times, let it slowly seep its way into my brain, not just hit me all at once with a blunt and brutal blow to my brain's pleasure-receptors. Often, music that I LOVE the first time I hear gets old quickly. However, there are exceptions (the Zombies' "Odessey and Oracle" being the most obvious example that springs to mind--I've had this cd since last summer and can't stop listening to it). But, although I like to think of XTC as a "pop" band, they are NOT the "traditional" sort of "pop" band (there's pop and then there's pop). They don't write catchy singles that fly up the charts and then are instantly forgotten. XTC's music transcends time and space, yeah!!! I've been reading too much "Cosmic Trigger" lately (hey, any more Wilson freaks out there?). As I say I'm getting little joy out of him about the demos; he keeps telling me what he's got but not what he'd like to see done with them (I expect he's interested in trading, but whether for other tapes or for cash I simply don't know). I just got the Sound & Vision article and it is finally sinking in that a new XTC album will be here. Why is everyone so angry at Andy about his Dave comments in Raygun? They didn't seem that unreasonable to me with the exception of not working with Dave again. The man is entitled to his opinion. Besides the key comment in that article, to me, came from Colin. When Colin said that Dave was negative towards everything, that attitude must have been putting a damper on the proceedings. Dave's gone, Andy and Colin are continuing to make great music, this is the present state of XTC and they've weather so many storms before, I can't wait to see the outcome of this one. Harry

I have a copy of the demos (thanks again for insisting, Kate!), which I
haven't listened to since Halloween. I was one of those who did not want
to spoil the enjoyment of the finished product by hearing the beta
versions. However, I bit the bullet, and was glad I did. At the same
time, I decided not to over-listen and to enforce a moratorium on them
so that my memory wouldn't get in the way. I still remember my
impressions of the songs, though, and I'm not sure if "Your Dictionary"
or "I'd Like That" would be the best choices. "Dictionary" would
generate press, of course, with the "Beavis & Butthead" factor, ("Heh,
heh, he spelled '"fuck"'), but it's not real catchy. "I'd Like That" is
sweet, appealing to the "nice" crowd, but not a real grabber, either. We
need a song that will grab and not let go! In terms of popularity/album
sales, a great hook is more important than clever lyrics. Don't get me
wrong! I'm not talking about what is "better," I'm talking about Elvis
P. selling more albums than Elvis C., about Lenny Kravitz, for chrissake
("Wish I could fly/like a dragonfly/up in the sky/so very high" - Oh
brother! And the hook is OK, but just repeats ad nauseum - but people
are lapping it up!). God forbid Andy/Colin ever write to pander to this
mentality. I'm talking about choosing from the existing body of work.
First impressions, ya know? "River of Orchids" or "Green Man" would seem
like a more infectous introduction for the deprived. While it seems to
defy what I just said, if a song is brilliant enough, it can't help but
sell (not always, I know). So if "Easter Theater" is as good (or better)
than the demos, that may be a good one. As a band that has begun to get
the "where are they now" label, XTC may only get one shot at
recognition. Let's make sure this one sticks!
Band names: I used to (used to?) fantasize about forming a band, but
never was able to make it a reality. However, in Geography class, I read
about two places in (at that time) the USSR that sounded like they'd
make great band names. For a heavy metal band, "Krivoy Rog," and for a
more psychodelic combo, "The Kirsk Magnetic Anomaly." Don't know if
you'd have to get permission/pay royalties or something, but there you
go...
nross - You're an HFS listener, too? Were you at the Mike Keneally event
last Oct? I was... The morning guy is Lou Brutus ("ha, ha"), and I've
previously posted about his promo w/Andy & Colin and TB. I still need to
send them e-mails on AV1.

Seems like a difficult mishearing... hmm. About a month ago, me & my girl were in the local independent record shop. Nothing had caught my eye, but she'd found a few things of interest. As we were waiting at the counter, the owner was on the phone, and I happened to overhear something like "... and you've got to hear the new XTC demos!" Not to excite you, but this disc did have some stuff I hadn't yet heard, and I plunked down $20 without a second's thought. (Moralists fear not; I have preordered FOUR copies of AV1 against the day it should eventually ship. They'll make good gifts; and I want this baby to chart.) Many of these demos I already had, either through Hello Recording Club, or others from a tape sent me by a chalker so long ago I no longer remember at all who it was, but some of these new-to-me songs are fantastic. "Church of Women" in particular does not want to exit my synapses, and unlike lesser music, I'm glad rather than irritated to have it stuck in my brain. Whaddya mean it's not on AV1? - oh, well, I'm still looking forward to perfected production on 9 of the 11 tunes, and will get to hear "Harvest Festival" and "Fruit Nut" with fresh ears. "Greenman" is wonderful, too, though I don't know that I know why. For the record, the boot's called "In the sidings and by the rails". CDNOW still has Feb 23 as the AV1 release date, but what do they know? Oh, the agony of waiting... Enough bandwidth for me, Dave

Hey Steve -
I have been a big Kinks fan for ages and have just about everything
they ever recorded ( almost all on vinyl ) . I recommend you pick up " Face
To Face " , " Something Else By The Kinks " , " Muswell Hillbillies " ; and
a compilation CD that includes all the early hit singles ( " You Really Got
Me " ; " All Day and All of The Night " ; " Tired Of Waiting For You " ; "
Dedicated Follower Of Fashion " ; " A Well Respected Man " ; etc. ) plus
stuff like " See My Friends " ; " Dead End Street " ; " Autumn Almanac " ;
and " Days " . I have a copy of the doube LP compilation entitled " The
Kinks Kronikles " on Reprise that I would highly recommend . Don't know if
it is available on CD , though . I would be more than happy to put a "
sampler " cassette together for you or anyone else on the list who is
interested . As most of us know , The Kinks were one of AP's fave groups
when he was a young lad .

Seriously though, these are most encouraging developments, since it suggests that Cooking Vinyl are pitching their promotion to the correct area of the market; UK mailers would probably agree that it wouldn't have the same effect to stick such a track on an NME giveaway..... Has this project been confirmed, the box set of XTC demos that Andy is
supposedly working on? Can we assume that this will be available in wide
release and available at reputable music stores? This project has me really
psyched. I have some of the demos on CD, but a box set would just be too
cool.
Also, do you all think that Apple Venus Vol. 2 will come to fruition?
Knowing how Andy is, I can see the whole project changing as it evolves. I
LOVE the stuff on AV1, but always like to hear Andy and Colin rock out a
bit. If AV2 is completed as planned, what demo songs do you thnk will make
the final cut? The only one I would say that is guarenteed to be on the
record is "Playground." I'd love to see "I Don't Want To Be Here" and "Chuch
of Women" as well. Do any of you insiders have any info on what is to be
recorded for AV2? I'd sure love to hear what the plans are...

It is not unusual (though it is very sad) for me to dream about XTC. In this dream I was at a small retail music place and I picked up AV and brought it very close to my face to inspect it in full detail. The jewel box was a similar glowiness to the box set ones, but more of a yellow color. And down the spine it said "XTC APPLE VENUS SQUEEZE" which I read out loud. Dear Chalkers,
Here's the result of my XTC mini-compo...
The only correct answer was, of course, Go 2
By far the most noticeable and peculiar XTC sleeve design because it
doesn't show any pictures. And that is _very_ unusual for a record
sleeve (go on, check your collection).
Anyway, a copy of the new Apple Venus Vol. I cd is now on it's way to
the winner, Steve McAllister who mailed me the first correct answer.

Fox Family cable channel in the U.S. has been running old episodes (4:30 p.m. weekdays Central time), and watching a few, it struck me how consistantly excellant that show was. I was a huge fan during the initial run, but had pretty much forgotten about it. Speaking of Danny Elfman- Did anyone watch that new Dilbert cartoon? I missed it, but saw a couple commercials for it, enough to recognize the music as being from the film Forbidden Zone, made in the early '80's by Richard Elfman (Danny's Brother). Danny did the music for Forbidden Zone-this was back in the early days of Oingo Boingo. The music in the Dilbert commercial was unmistakably from Forbidden Zone, so I have to wonder if Mr. Elfman is repeating himself, or if the Dilbert people got permission to use old music. Forbidden Zone stars Herve Villachaise-Tattoo on the original Fantasy Island tv show, and Susan Tyrell plays his wife (she was also in Big Top Pee-Wee). There's also a brief appearance by the Kipper Kids, a performance art duo, one of whom later married Bette Midler. I feel like I'm playing a twisted version of Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon here...How does this all tie in to XTC? Well...hmmm.. Oh Yeah-Todd Rundgren wrote music for Pee-Wee's Playhouse, and Andy Partridge worked with the Residents on the Commercial Album-one of several guests on that record uncredited except for being noted as "Special Secret Appearences-?" (by the way, does anyone know of any others? The only one I know except for Andy is 80's New Wave diva Lene Lovitch singing on one track). Haven't figured a direct link between XTC and Danny Elfman. It frightens me how huch of our minds are occupied with trivial information like this... Tyler

Heya Pete, that was me...He did a few solo albums "Virtuoso" and "Virtuso #2" that I like; also one (at least) with Ella (how can you go wrong?). I find him a bit predictable after awhile, but an excellent player anyway. Django never recorded a bad track, and there are dozens of sessions out there. Try finding the Rome sessions from 1949; he had been playing electric for a few years but went back to acoustic, some fantastic playing (particulary After You've Gone, my all time favorite of his). Another good bet is the mid-30's sessions with Grapelli (especially Honeysuckle Rose, a hilarious, excellent piece of fearless guitar improvisation). Can't let a jazz guitar discussion go by without mentioning Wes Montgomery (get "Full House" with Miles' rhythm section+ Johnny Griffin), Tal Farlow (a good Verve collection is out on CD) and Charlie Christian (one of the very 1st electric guitarists, died in 1942 at the age of 23, recorded with Benny Goodman Sextet, a huge influence on later jazz players). What's up with Chalkhills? The posts have been two to three days behind
lately. I had to wait half a week to get blasted for my sarcastic Rush
Limbaugh comments.

A "dweeb"? That's it? I got off easy there. Probably because Amanda
knew that I was JOKING. Unlike our next contestant...

don't think he's a racist. My dad listens to him, but he isn't a member
of the KKK, so I'd better watch it if I were you. Not all Rush Limbaugh

Was that a threat? Really Molly! It was a JOKE. I don't know how more
obvious I could have been. I wasn't "generalizing". I was making a
wise ass comment which I don't feel like wasting time explaining any
further. Sorry that you missed the point. And how you translated that
into an insult against your father is way beyond me. Unless it's that
old SAT logic. If A makes fun of C, and B likes C, then A is making fun
of B or something like that. My dad thinks Don Imus is funny, but if
someone bagged on Imus, I wouldn't get all upset at them. And believe
me, Don Imus deserves to get bagged on.
I am weary of all this vitriol. From now on I will only say nice things
I think...Nice things about nothing but XTC. Like that "Holly up on
Poppy" song. That's a NICE song. I like it. It's about a cute girl
who rides on a NEAT wooden horse. I love HORSES. Animals are our
friends. I love everything in the whole world!
