The appearance will be by ANDY PARTRIDGE, rather than XTC, so perhaps that explains the confusion that Joel got from the employees. Of course, perhaps too the employees are just idiots, which happened to me once when I was looking for some Plato, and the salesclerk had never heard of him. This information came from TVT records to the record store here in town, so it's official information. Perhaps the TVT dude on the list can say more about it? The event is billed as "some songs with a question-and-answer period"--definitely a MUST-ATTEND event. I cannot say how much it sucks that I can't go. Fucking obligations. This spoof was recorded on October the 8th, 1979 at BBC's Maida Vale
Studio 4. Produced by Tony Wilson and engineered by Dave Dade and
first broadcast on the John Peel Show exactly one week later on the
15th.
They also taped Real By Reel, Scissor Man, Ten Feet Tall,
and Roads Girdle The Globe.

Thanks for the tip, I downloaded "I'd Like That" from TVT. It sounded,
on first listen, very similar to the demo version, but then again, it's
a pretty spare song. I STILL think "Greenman" would make a better
single. How do you figure "ILT" would be better for the US market? The
alterna-rock crowd (despite anyone's feelings about the genre/radio,
etc. - it's still XTC's market) isn't into the "sweet" stuff that much,
and all the lyrics about Hector, Albert & Nelson are WAY too Brit for
this side of the pond. I also don't think "Greenman" should be counted
out for length. Maybe on top 40 radio where anything over 3 min. is
edited down to fit, but 5 min. isn't unheard of anymore.
Yonic? How about Yanni-ick?
Now that the subject of cartoons has been brought up (one of my other
passions), who here is a Tex Avery fan? Anyone remember "The New
Adventures of Mighty Mouse" (Ralph "Fritz the Cat" [that is, the X-Rated
animated film version, not the original character by R. Crumb] Bakshi's
short-lived tribute/satire of the classic)? And let's hear it for
"Danger Mouse"!
Peter Mullin: Yes, that is Barry on Iggy's "Soldier," as well as Ivan
Kraal (?) from Patti Smith. Personally, I didn't like the album much,
esp. compared to "New Values" ("I'm the Chairman of the Bored").
Ben Gott: Yes, I've been corrected. I had the right song in mind (though
the lyrics I quoted were fuzzy), but it WAS the Sugarhill Gang (thanks
Marshall). When you hit your 40s the brain cells start to go (or maybe
it was the acid?)
Good idea - AV1 for Valentine's Day. Too bad it's a week off. Well,
better late than never. I was wondering what I was going to do with that
extra copy I was going to buy (for the cause!).

A CD single has been issued of "I'd Like That" (TVT 3251-2P). It was
issued for promotional purposes only and sent primarily to radio
stations. The cover has an orange background and green type that reads
"i'd like that" with "i'd" consuming a vast majority of the cover. It
comes in a jewel box and doesn't say "xtc" on the front. The CD design
is essentially the same design. The back and inside show a close-up
partial of Colin (which makes his nose look huge) and a full picture of
Andy with hat.
The full Apple Venus Volume 1 promo (TVT 3250-2A) has the same kind of
design motif as the single and reads "a is for..." It comes in a
cardboard sleeve. The design on the CD and back of the jacket is
essentially text that reads ("Q" is used to designate a silhouette of
an apple - ...flip it)

It lists the actual release date as 3/2/99 but don't panic, you've
already heard otherwise from John Hammond of TVT.
So... the posts indicating that "...'I'd Like That', XTC's first
single in nearly seven years will be added to rock radio on February
16." and "The first single from Apple Venus Vol. I, "I'd Like That,"
hits radio on Feb. 15." is a bit off the mark as the disc is already in
the hands of many radio stations as witnessed by many Chalkers who have
actually _heard_ it. KFOG in S.F. has it and has played it but I've
never heard it (they state that it's not in heavy rotation).

XTC album. Not the advance cd, but the real finished product as it

The package is dead gorgeous but, as far as i can tell, no lyrics!

In fact we met in part because she heard me playing "Snowman" on my college radio show, figured I must be pretty groovy (I probably am) and decided to join the station too. We both attended the recent Sunnyvale gathering and met some nice folks. Fave XTC: Black Sea (without the bonus trax). Still miles ahead of their other stuff, IMO. Nobody dis "Living Through Another Cuba" any more okay? You have no soul if that song doesn't have you bouncing around the room. I have never misspelled XTC to the best of my knowledge. If I were to guess which U.S. tv shows XTC would enjoy, I'd say something like: Mr. Show; Space Ghost; Mad TV; The Daily Show; The Tick; The Critic; Dr. Katz; The Simpsons; King of the Hill... - and perhaps "South Park" - (which I did not jump on the bandwagon over), and perhaps reruns (if it was still showing) of "Duckman" and "Kids in the Hall" (Canadian, yes - I know). I'm not sure XTC will be performing-I assumed that they (just Andy?)
would be signing stuff and chatting with fans. I could be wrong-a
performance would be beyond my wildest wishes. But given their
attitude towards playing live...
A note to all those planning to attend the appearance in Chicago-I
know from past experience that Border's can be a little picky about
in-store appearances. They may, among other things, insist that only
copies of Apple Venus (no back catalog) purchased from Borders AT THE
TIME OF THE APPEARANCE BY THE BAND will be signed. They may also limit
signed items to one per customer. This may be dependant on the size
of the crowd in attendance, or on the wishes of XTC. They could
actually be really nice about it, after all, it's hard to police what
people bring into the store, and XTC know how loyal their fans are.
This puts me in a bit of a quandary-I was planning on running out to
buy AV1 on the 23rd, but will be at Border's anyways on the 25th, and
could buy it there, avoiding any potential conflicts with them. If I
do that, however, I'll have to read through two days of gushy postings
from all of you before I get to actually hear it myself. What to do,
what to do...

You mean there are radio stations out there with 4 songs in rotation? ;-)
As of late, I've come to the mostly-uninformed conclusion that the opposite
is true, for the most part -- if a song is getting a lot of play on the
radio, MTV will air it no matter how bad the video is. As great as the
songs on AV1 almost certainly are, I have a hard time imagining a video off
of it airing at anytime other than 120 Minutes, which has massively dropped
in quality over the past year or so, but remains the best programming on
MTV. Amazing. Whatever happened to Matt Pinfield anyway?

At least you have Tuscadero, Hot Pursuit, and the Rondelles, among others,
to keep you entertained. :-) Are any of the other stations up there
playing XTC? XTC doesn't really fit the format of any of the stations in
listening distance around here aside from Clemson's WSBF, where I'm hoping
it'll be added... It wasn't there 2 weeks ago, at least, although we're
having trouble with the transmitter, resulting in a lot of shows not
airing, so I wasn't able to get in during my normal time slot and dig
through everything this past week. :-p
