It's great to see so much coverage, stacks of space in the latest Mojo,
and i wondered whether any of the website meisters or anyone else would
pass on the most interesting. The MOjo article is great dissonance,
mostly plodding history whereas AVI is a wonderful piece of creativity.
I would have preferred more of AP's views on whatever. That said it did
alight briefly upon AP's views on sex, funny stuff which does seem to
contradict the seemingly stage managed comments in Farmer's recent
book.

Are these all the official cd versions or are there any different
versions/mixes ?

I recently read the "Dudley" interview with Andy Partridge, and as many of you know, Andy discusses what is said about XTC on the internet and his reactions to our little community. He admits that he ignores the "hyperbole". I ran this by the hyperbole police, and at first I think they were ready to arrest me; but after they heard the album they declared that there were no violations or even any indiscretions. I advised them to go to Holland to interview Mr. Stribjos but they said that he was out of their jurisdiction. Not that it would have mattered; they would have had to clear him of all suspicion as well. Sometimes superlatives apply. "Apple Venus Vol. I" is absolutely flawless. Some people (myself included) have been impressed with the Trevor Horn produced Seal albums. The word "seamless" comes to mind. This can only begin to describe why this album is so special. Each song is a fully realized work of art. Brilliantly arranged. Rife with musical sounds as fresh as wind chimes in a gentle breeze. And, Andy and Colin are singing better than ever. Some people (including Andy Partridge) have voiced some misgivings regarding our familiarity with the demos. A few have gone so far as to publicly announce their refusal to listen to them explaining that they preferred to hear the final product first. The feeling was that we might be disappointed due to unreasonably high expectations or because certain favorite passages / arrangements might be changed or discarded in the "official" versions of the songs. They needn't have worried. I was familiar with all of the "Andy Songs". I have to say that each of the songs are superior to the demos. On first listen, "Greenman" raised a virtual eyebrow due to some changes in the instrumentation and the addition of some classic XTC flourishes not present in the demo version. On second listen, it picked me up and juggled me over its head in circles, much in the same way that an Italian muscle bound circus performer does with one of his unfortunate younger brothers. The "Colin Songs" are great. They are easy to like the first time, and continue to grow on you with subsequent auditions. They feel something like late 60's Kinks/Beatles/Beach Boys/Pink Floyd records, in other words, classic XTC. Whether you have heard the demos or not is irrelevant. You are in for a rare treat. I can't wait to get my hands on the first generation shrink-wrapped compact disc version of "Apple Venus Volume I" so I can feed it to my too_long_deprived_of_new_XTC_music ears. Michael Versaci

Spoonman's blows keep bouncing off the Greenman's crazy rainbow protective device. He can't touch the Greenman. The Greenman doesn't move. He doesn't seem to care at all. It's as if he's in another world. It seems as if he's in the ring, but perhaps he's really not. Perhaps it's just an illusion. We thought he was going to participate in the fight. What a let-down! Spoonman is really angry now, frustrated by his thwarted attempts to engage the Greenman in the "Performance of the Century." But Greenman won't perform. He yawns. He takes his pencil and makes some notes on a piece of paper. Greenman holds the paper up for all to see. "I am the true Leadite!" he states. "No one is better than me. I do not have to perform for you people, you sycophants!" He pats his sides, his heavily padded sides, and says "I already have your money in my pockets! Now go home, people, go home and leave me alone!" The crowd gasps. Some rub their eyes as if really seeing the Greenman for the first time. Yet they understand. They are in awe at the depths of his powers. Greenman wins the fight because he refuses to take part in the show. THE END.

Mitch kindly forwarded your CD "modern Time Neros", for which much
thanks. I'm always fascinated by the alternative spin other
artists put on the songs, and I've enjoyed listening to all three
of the discs so far. Yes, there are many talented folks out there,
and it's great that our music has left the sort of impression with
them that inspires these tributes.
It would be inappropriate to single out any one artist or
performance - they are ALL wonderful! - so please keep 'em coming,
as it looks like this is turning into an annual event. The giant
technological steps in home recording equipment development,
together with ever-decreasing prices, is gradually moving
professional quality studio great into the garrets of aspiring
artists everywhere; this can only be a good thing, and I look
forward to hearing how the "Children" mature in future
compilations. Already I can hear some spectacular interpretations
of "The Last Ballon".
Congratulations on shifting all the tapes, and hats off to you,
and to Richard, for putting it all together and helping to keep
the buzz going. Thanks too for your kind invitation; if I'm ever
in Dublin again I'll give you a call!

And this is totally due to my high expectations! But I can safely say, that having heard the mp3's and other audio snippets of the AV material (unfortunately, not one of the lucky demo bootleg owners...), that this is going to be an XTC masterpiece! I already know that I will not even need the typical time for the record to grow on me. Nonesuch...took awhile for me to really groove on it. Oranges and Lemons...took me a very long time to really appreciate (now I love it). But this is a different animal...hearing what ive heard, I already love it, and can only imagine the electric stuff of AV2! Television is a good example. Tele is Latin, Vision Greek . The weirdest example I know is a placename about 40 miles from here - Strathtaieri. Strath is Scottish (a broad valley); Taieri is Maori (spring tide - the lower reaches of the Taieri river regularly flood at spring tide - it rhymes with diary, BTW). Personally, I'd use vaginal as the opposite of phallic and yonic as the opposite of priapic. I don't think the original language that the word came from has much relevance in English - it is a wonderful bastard language that takes in words from all sources and gives them subtle changes of meaning (what, for example, is the difference between know-how and savoir faire? A saint and a martyr? Or beer and ale?
