Subject: What's New on Chalkhills

Choosers of Chalk,

First, let me announce the new home of Chalkhills!

    http://chalkhills.org/

So please update your web pages and bookmarks today.

Second, numerous new reviews and articles have arrived, including many
reviews of "Apple Venus Volume 1":

The Toledo Blade (thanks to Bill Peschel)
    Amazon.com (thanks to Ben Gott)
USA Today (thanks to Wes Hanks)
    MOJO (thanks to Adrian Ogden)
    Allstar (thanks to Bob O'Bannon)
THe Boston Herald (thanks to Wes Hanks)

Adrian Ogden also contributed part of the very long article in MOJO, called
"The Strike and Rebirth Years: 1993-1999".

Jeffrey Fariello sent in his transcription of the guitar chords to "I'd
Like That".

Our French correspondent Frederic Solans sent in a couple of ads from "Les
Inrockuptibles", including one which announces a new book to be published
in France and in French, called "XTC: Art sonique et vieilles dentelles".
I also must apologise for a mistake I made last week, in which I stated
that Fredo sent in the scan of the cover of the MOJO CD. I was mistaken.
It was Holger Loeschner who scanned the MOJO CD cover, and Fredo scanned
the Les Inrockuptibles Un Hiver 99 CD.

Nishimatu Nisei tells us that there are a number of new Japanese XTC sites,
notably including the "XTC Web Ring Japan":

    http://www.webring.ne.jp/cgi-bin/webring?ring=xtc;random

I'm sure there's more, but you'll have to surf to find it...

Hola Desde Austin, amigos,

I had heard a rumor a week or so back that KGSR in Austin had played
I'd Like That once or twice in the previous week, so I started listening
a bit more often, hoping to catch the song. I've got a good stereo at
work, but I drive an old, noisy truck that you can hardly hear the radio
over, so I promised myself I'd pull over so I could listen if it
happened to come on. Monday, about 10:30, it comes on justy as I'm
looking for a parking place, anyway. What a damn nice song. So, I sit
for a few minutes, no big deal. Back to work. Not two hours later, I'm
out in traffic again, and what should happen? Greenman comes on! Here I
am, marooned on the side of the road for over six minutes. I'll never
get anywhere if this keeps up.

Thanks, Jill.

BTW, I knew instantly it was XTC, because the nice guy at Cheapo disks
let me put his copy of the Demos CD on the headphones for a while when I
was in the store the other day. Don't know if he's on the list, but
thanks. We're All Light struck me the most from that collection, but
apparently, it's not on AV1. Is it going to be on AV2 for sure?

Yes, my copy of PG3 does have a series of characters printed on the
cover, which represent spoken phonemes, but during the recording

No, but they did release the "Compact XTC" in the UK in 1985. The only other

I wonder if Mr Patridge was in any way inspired by Jethro Tull.
Compare the line "said the grass is always greener when it bursts up through
concrete" with the the following from Tull's "Jack In the Green"

"Jack, do you never sleep --- does the green still run deep in your heart?
Or will these changing times, motorways, powerlines, keep us apart?
Well, I don't think so ---
I saw some grass growing through the pavements today."

Similar sentiments, at least.

It's great to see so much coverage, stacks of space in the latest Mojo,
and i wondered whether any of the website meisters or anyone else would
pass on the most interesting. The MOjo article is great dissonance,
mostly plodding history whereas AVI is a wonderful piece of creativity.
I would have preferred more of AP's views on whatever. That said it did
alight briefly upon AP's views on sex, funny stuff which does seem to
contradict the seemingly stage managed comments in Farmer's recent

Does anyone have any thoughts on how NYC's Tower Records might conduct the
Andy/Colin appearance on Feb 23?

I expect autographable items will be limited to those purchased that day at
Tower; is there likely to be a limit on the NUMBER of items one person can
have autographed (would make sense event planning-wise, though not
necessarily business-wise). Or will everything be pre-autographed?

I'm not really a chase-the-celebrity type, but I have to admit that I'll
probably be making the trip up from Philly for THIS.

I'm curious: can anyone tell me why there's no XTC presence on the Usenet
newsgroups? I think the alt.fan.andy-j-partridge thing turned out to be
someone's private joke, right?

Anyway, I've proposed an alt.music.xtc group to the Usenet sys-admin types
at alt.config, and I'm curious to see if any of Chalkhills' readers would
be interested in this forum (certainly as a complement to this excellent
list -- I doubt any mere newsgroup denizens could match the sparkling
quality of the posts we enjoy here). :-) It's a rather convoluted process,
requesting that a new alt. group be created, so if anyone has any
suggestions or experience to share with me regarding this, please do.
Otherwise, please just let me know if you would ever use/post to an
XTC-dedicated newsgroup.

Folxtc,

(Note: I managed to secure a 3rd generation cassette copy of "Apple Venus
Vol. I" under the provisions that I do not reveal its source, that I do not
copy it for anyone, and that I buy at least one copy of the official
release.)

I recently read the "Dudley" interview with Andy Partridge, and as many of
you know, Andy discusses what is said about XTC on the internet and his
reactions to our little community. He admits that he ignores the
"hyperbole".

I ran this by the hyperbole police, and at first I think they were ready to
arrest me; but after they heard the album they declared that there were no
violations or even any indiscretions. I advised them to go to Holland to
interview Mr. Stribjos but they said that he was out of their jurisdiction.
Not that it would have mattered; they would have had to clear him of all
suspicion as well.

Sometimes superlatives apply.

"Apple Venus Vol. I" is absolutely flawless. Some people (myself included)
have been impressed with the Trevor Horn produced Seal albums. The word
"seamless" comes to mind. This can only begin to describe why this album is
so special. Each song is a fully realized work of art. Brilliantly
arranged. Rife with musical sounds as fresh as wind chimes in a gentle
breeze. And, Andy and Colin are singing better than ever.

Some people (including Andy Partridge) have voiced some misgivings regarding
our familiarity with the demos. A few have gone so far as to publicly
announce their refusal to listen to them explaining that they preferred to
hear the final product first. The feeling was that we might be
disappointed due to unreasonably high expectations or because certain
favorite passages / arrangements might be changed or discarded in the
"official" versions of the songs.

They needn't have worried.

I was familiar with all of the "Andy Songs". I have to say that each of the
songs are superior to the demos. On first listen, "Greenman" raised a
virtual eyebrow due to some changes in the instrumentation and the addition
of some classic XTC flourishes not present in the demo version. On second
listen, it picked me up and juggled me over its head in circles, much in
the same way that an Italian muscle bound circus performer does with one of
his unfortunate younger brothers.

The "Colin Songs" are great. They are easy to like the first time, and
continue to grow on you with subsequent auditions. They feel something like
late 60's Kinks/Beatles/Beach Boys/Pink Floyd records, in other words,
classic XTC.

Whether you have heard the demos or not is irrelevant. You are in for a
rare treat. I can't wait to get my hands on the first generation
shrink-wrapped compact disc version of "Apple Venus Volume I" so I can feed
it to my too_long_deprived_of_new_XTC_music ears.

Subject: Spoonman vs. Greenman
Date: Wed, 17 Feb 1999 13:53:24 -0600

THE SPOONMAN: Aggressive, brilliant, in-your-face,
wearing all black except for some heavy metal studs
impaled through his toughened skin

THE GREENMAN: Peace-loving, tripped-out, yet calculated,
wearing nothing at all except a tie-dyed aura, like the
kind of circular rainbows you can only see from a plane

Their eyes meet across the small square ring. There
is no referee, no one to ensure the fight is fair or follows
the rules of the match. A strong blast of light signals the
start of the fight. Immediately Spoonman races toward the
Greenman. His fists are tight and ready on his piston arms.
The crowd goes wild and the roar is deafening. We're in for
quite a show tonight Ladies and Gentlemen!

But wait! Spoonman's blows keep bouncing off the Greenman's
crazy rainbow protective device. He can't touch the Greenman.
The Greenman doesn't move. He doesn't seem to care at all.
It's as if he's in another world. It seems as if he's in the ring,
but perhaps he's really not. Perhaps it's just an illusion. We
thought he was going to participate in the fight. What a let-down!

Spoonman is really angry now, frustrated by his thwarted attempts
to engage the Greenman in the "Performance of the Century."
But Greenman won't perform. He yawns. He takes his pencil
and makes some notes on a piece of paper. Greenman holds
the paper up for all to see.

"I am the true Leadite!" he states. "No one is better than me.
I do not have to perform for you people, you sycophants!"
He pats his sides, his heavily padded sides, and says
"I already have your money in my pockets! Now go home,
people, go home and leave me alone!"

The crowd gasps. Some rub their eyes as if really seeing the
Greenman for the first time. Yet they understand. They are
in awe at the depths of his powers. Greenman wins the fight
because he refuses to take part in the show.

THE END.

    Dear Peter,

Mitch kindly forwarded your CD "modern Time Neros", for which much
thanks. I'm always fascinated by the alternative spin other
artists put on the songs, and I've enjoyed listening to all three
of the discs so far. Yes, there are many talented folks out there,
and it's great that our music has left the sort of impression with
    them that inspires these tributes.

It would be inappropriate to single out any one artist or
performance - they are ALL wonderful! - so please keep 'em coming,
as it looks like this is turning into an annual event. The giant
technological steps in home recording equipment development,
together with ever-decreasing prices, is gradually moving
professional quality studio great into the garrets of aspiring
artists everywhere; this can only be a good thing, and I look
forward to hearing how the "Children" mature in future
compilations. Already I can hear some spectacular interpretations
    of "The Last Ballon".

Congratulations on shifting all the tapes, and hats off to you,
and to Richard, for putting it all together and helping to keep
the buzz going. Thanks too for your kind invitation; if I'm ever
in Dublin again I'll give you a call!

Thanks again to you, and to all the contributors,

    With best wishes,

In each of the following passages, the word (or phrase) in *asterisks*
causes the statement to be false. Immediately following the passage is a

JOHN CAGE:
"I don't myself use records, and I give the example of
someone who lives happily without records. But I notice
that no one pays any attention to me. Or maybe a few
pay attention but most people use records."

ANDY PARTRIDGE:
"The magic -- the good thing that I do is a record. The
crap thing that I do is reluctantly going onstage and going,
"Okay. We'll run through this one for the five-millionth time
for you." I don't want to do that. I'll leave that to young kids
who need to kind of get that out of their system."

JOHN CAGE:
"No, (recording is) really not useful at all. It merely destroys
one's need for real music. It substitutes artificial music for real
music and it makes people think that they're engaging in a
musical activity when they're actually not. And it has
completely distorted and turned upside-down the function
of music in anyone's experience. "For instance, if you don't
believe what I said, I was present at a concert, conducted by
Stravinsky, of one of his own works. I was sitting behind a
ten-year-old child and his father, and after the performance
was finished, the child turned to his father and said,
'That's isn't the way it goes.' "

ANDY PARTRIDGE:
I don't enjoy touring. I don't enjoy the whole show sensation.
I never really did. You know, I went to see bands when I was
younger. And I was always disappointed by them. But I was
rarely disappointed by their records. For me, the magic is the
record. The record is what hits you. The record is what gets
in -- you know, why do you want to go and see somebody's
flabby stomach when you can have a slice of their soul on
the record?

Could we please try to not say too much about AV until the release date?
I don't mean to be a party pooper, but some of us haven't gotten a copy
yet, and knowing Music Boulevard not until two weeks. So please I ask
you wait until the people get it.

This is kind of a functionless post...but I just have to say....I am always
paranoid / skeptical when a band that I live and breathe, is about to put
out a new record, especially after a long absence. And this is totally due
to my high expectations! But I can safely say, that having heard the mp3's
and other audio snippets of the AV material (unfortunately, not one of the
lucky demo bootleg owners...), that this is going to be an XTC masterpiece!
I already know that I will not even need the typical time for the record to
grow on me. Nonesuch...took awhile for me to really groove on it. Oranges
and Lemons...took me a very long time to really appreciate (now I love it).
But this is a different animal...hearing what ive heard, I already love it,
and can only imagine the electric stuff of AV2! In fact im glad I was not
blessed with an illicit demo, for the surprise will be golden!! So, with
this spam said...

CHEERS TO THE BOYS FROM SWINDON !

greetings chalkurians,

further to a previous posting about the state of radio in the vicinity of
toronto, canada, i bring you the following update...

oh boy, we've had a radio station change their format recently! can you
imagine? what was once ciss-fm (pronounced kiss), a "new country" format,
it has become power-92, another middle-of-the-road (mor) pop station. why,
their adverts claim to be "the new power" of toronto's radio, all the while
playing clips of britney spears, whitney huston, celine dion, shania twain,
pill collins! y-e-e-e-e-e-e-c-c-c-c-h-h-h! that's 5 "mor" radio stations in
the toronto area alone (chfi-fm 98.1, mix 99.9, ezy-rock 95, 104.5 chum-fm
& now power-92)! as you can see, radio hasn't improved much since my last
report...

to (another one named) andrea [AThorstein@aol.com], welcome aboard! you asked:
>Why isn't XTC doing an in-store appearance in Canada????
hang onto your hat, andrea, because andy is supposed to be (according to
http://www.tvtrecords.com/xtc/xtcactivities.html) in toronto sat feb. 27
for an in-store signing at tower records, 2 pm. i assume that they mean the
tower store downtown at the eaton centre on the corner of yonge & queen
streets. you can bet your ass that i'll be there...

in a few recent digests, the subject of the age of xtc fans has been
raised, by a thirteen year old at that! another piped in that he was 15.
all i can say about that is, to an xtc fan since 1979, that there is hope
this world over for our future generations & for andy & colin as well! keep
listening, katy & rich, your taste in music is impecable!

peace & xtc

Television is a good example. Tele is Latin, Vision Greek . The weirdest
example I know is a placename about 40 miles from here - Strathtaieri.
Strath is Scottish (a broad valley); Taieri is Maori (spring tide - the
lower reaches of the Taieri river regularly flood at spring tide - it
rhymes with diary, BTW).

Personally, I'd use vaginal as the opposite of phallic and yonic as the
opposite of priapic. I don't think the original language that the word came
from has much relevance in English - it is a wonderful bastard language
that takes in words from all sources and gives them subtle changes of
meaning (what, for example, is the difference between know-how and savoir
faire? A saint and a martyr? Or beer and ale? They are all the same
original word from different original languages!)

>Too, -ic isn't an "English" suffix anyway (not like -wise, -ble, and -ment
>are)

nitpicker that I am, I would claim that -ment (and possibly also -ble)
actually comes from French.

>But just to make me a true hypocrite, I really, really hate "impact" as a
>verb. It's "affect", dammit!

hear hear! The only thing that 'impacts' is a tooth!

James (who is fighting a losing battle against people using adjectives as
adverbs... it's quickLY dammit!)
