I've been encouraged by the many spontaneous de-lurkings recently to take the frightful plunge myself (lurking for over three years now, in anticipation of finding something worthwhile to say. Oh well, still hasn't happened.....here goes anyway). Just had to report that in Eugene OR, (the land of rain/the land of really bad radio), fans listening to KRVM (a public radio station) Friday, around 12:15 pm, got to hear XTC (I'd Like That). Many of the DJ's on KRVM are local high school kids getting their "broadcast" feet wet. Unfortunately, they frequently stumble over the pronunciations of band and artist's names (I once heard one of them say David Boughie and have heard much worse). So needless to say, my elation at hearing XTC was tarnished by the fumbling DJ's announcement that we had just heard Ecstasy. In the land of meth labs, I guess the kid had something else on his mind. Oh well. In Eugene, we are thankful for whatever scrap of XTC we might get around here. All you folks who live in (or close to) those places were bands and/or bandmembers actually go, gawk at Andy for me. In guarded jealousy, Lisa Pee

I managed to get my copy on Friday thanks to a very understanding record store owner ( I said I would kill myself if he didn't sell it to me ). He eventually agreed to sell it to me mail order, but I couldn't wait, so I sent a courier to his store to pick it up (some 60 miles away, costing me #40, but I just don't care anymore). Anyway, the CD has been on my Arcam plaver all weekend. I've cried, laughed and sucked my thumb like a baby, it's fabulous and awesome. But what is this feeling I am getting - I don't want to go to work tomorrow because no one will understand how I'm feeling at this special time. And most people on this list seem to be over the pond in the great U S of A arranging XTC get togethers and stuff - I FEEL BLOODY LONELY IN ENGLAND. It doesn't help when the band are not even in the country (do i smell or something) - are we going to get a promo tour or what? And that we have crap radio stations that will not play XTC. On another note, How many of you out there have joined the Cooking Vinyl Club and ordered AV1 from them direct - I did it a couple of weeks ago and was told I was one of the first 100, so I would get a signed copy - spiffing good show !! So to conclude, are we all really that anal in the UK (on second thoughts - don't answer that). This is a rally cry - lets sort something out. I am now going to return to the fetal position. He also flamed him for his WWW published metal opinions and then feels free to publish his own views on an album on, wait for it, the WWW. Where's the logic? And another thing (I won't rant for very much longer), if you feel that you are "supposed to be impressed" by the Barenaked Ladies' vocal talents, are you also as unimpressed by Andy's vocals on "Snowman"? It is arse-clenchingly awful for me to read this stuff (I acknowledge that I don't have to read it) from a man who, it seems, is unable to accept the fact that people have musical tastes which differ from his own. Hate to nitpick but Detroit has a south side like every other city in the
world. And California has an eastern border like every other state in
America. The above lame-ass phrases might be oddly worded and seldom used,
but they do refer to actual places. But does anyone remember the original
title of the movie "Volcano"? 20 points to the first person who can recall
this glaring geographical mixup (one of the reasons the film's title was
changed).

Having just received a postcard from Cooking Vinyl promoting AV, and therefore having the image in front of me as I type, I'd say that 'vaginal' is not an appropriate adjective, and that the only suitable terms are those related to vulva and yoni, with perhaps the latter winning out because of the additional definition as 'an image of [the female genitalia] as an object of worship' > The only thing that 'impacts' is a tooth! < Since we're being picky (although I'm not picky, I'm pedantic) 'impacts' is not a valid form, even for a tooth. Perhaps instead of dogging your place of residence you should try visiting local music venues or visit an art gallery. Being from the South I can assure you that there are plenty of worthwhile places that meet those descriptions. An area is only as good as it's citizens are wiling to make it and you are hardly doing your part. Playing the occasional track, maybe. The occasional XTC oldie when selected by one of the afternoon or weekend DJs, sure. As far as I can see, the only things JJJ 'plays to death' are the tracks that on the compulsory playlist (YES they do have one) which comprises their dumbass "alternative Top-40", or the VERY occasional left-field track that someone at the station (usually Arnold Frolows) likes, or horrific novelty items like 'Asshole', or any song with the word 'fuck' in it (e.g Liz Phair). Now this, as Adam rightly points out, ought to give 'Your Dictionary' a guernsey - except that the F-word is spelled out, making it way too difficult for Assistant Program Director Michael Tunn (yes it's true) to comprehend. There was a time when JJJ led the field. Now they cling to the pathetic pseudo-image of being a "yoof" network - even though their manager, their program director and at least half their audience are at least as old as me. And they are *still* obsessed with getting ratings, instead of doing what they were put there for in the first place - providing an alternative to the mindless dross of commercial radio. They have lost the plot. They have no sense of history, and no sense of where they are going. Even ten years ago they led the way, not by running stupid competitions but by DOING NEW THINGS; not just in music but in areas like comedy. Where is the new "Off The Record"? Where is the new "This Sporting Life"? (come to that - where is the old one??). Where is their commitment to new radio comedy? Gone, daddy, gone. Now bands like XTC are relegated to shows like Richard Kingsmill's sad old "Where are they now" late-night dumper-bin, or ignored completely. Now it's no new phenomenon for JJJ to be obsessed with one particular trend or style; those of you old enough may rememeber with a shudder the dreaded (sorry) approach of "The Dogs Of Babylon" (3 hours of hardcore dub) every Sunday night, but they also opened doors with great stuff like "Live At The Wireless" and The Nippy Rock Shop". Who else in Australia was playing Japanese pop? Who else in the late 70s was playing British and American New wave, or reggae? Who else played XTC? ot Television? or pre-'Stop Making Sense' Talking Heads? Or Kraftwerk? Or even silverchair....Who was the first station to play "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" and groundbreaking radio works like Russell Guy's classic "What's Grafton to you is Rangoon to me"? Who launched the careers of people like Doug Mulray, Roy & HG, Johnathan Coleman, Club Veg ....? But what do we get in their place. Michael Tunn. Quintin the Dream Lady. Moronic exercises like the Hottest 100, or any of their other promotional gags, where we are invited to pay out our hard earned readies for the supposed privelege of ringing them on a 1900 number (and making Kerry Packer and his mates even richer in the process) to win a prize other stations wouldn't give away. It's too sad. OK, I hear you - I'm getting old, you say... Technically, yes. Musically - no. I crave the new as much - if not more - than I did when I first began listening to Double Jay. BUT - those were the days when you could be The Jays were a real challenge - where you could be guaranteed to hear something you've never heard before almost any time of day; where they went out of their way to break NEW music, not be a mouthpiece for the majors and some sad synthesis of Rolling Stone and MTV; where you could tune in and hear 40-minute non-stop segues of all NEW tracks, without any interruption, not even for station IDs. I'm bored with a station who pretends that listeners don't exist unless they are 17, inarticulate, and so dumb that they wouldn't know their asses from a hole in the ground. I'm tired of being insulted by a station that I have loyally followed and supported for 25 years, and which has totally betrayed its original intentions. I'm not saying they don't have it tough - being a public braodcaster these days ain't easy. But hey, they could fight a *little* harder. Having just read Paul Culnane's post on #5-92 regarding the release date
being set at Mon 22nd Feb:
I just called the Festival Records line and asked about a new album due out
today. The lady instantly said 'Would that be the XTC one?' I almost
cacked myself laughing, before she explained that several people had said
they saw it announced on a 'web site or something', and that the official
release date was *originally* Monday March 22nd, but because of the 'huge
demand' they've had for it, it's being RUSH RELEASED and will be in
Australian stores [in capital cities, I'm assuming] on Monday the 29th!
The lady was extremely helpful; she told me both HMV and JB Hi-Fi are due
to have the album in copious stock on Monday. She was referring to
Melbourne CBD store locations, but I'm assuming this will apply to all the
branches.
I'm not denying or countering Paul Culnane's report, just iterating what
I've been told. It's happening, kiddies!

Don't know if there are any decent bars/pubs in that part of town. We could all meet in the Borders's cafe immediately after the signing, and perhaps go someplace after that. There's good pizza close to Border's (Gino's on Superior St.). Or, we could stick to the cafe. Don't know yet if I can stay after the signing, I have family coming into town on Thurs. eve or Fri. morning. But I probably could sneak in a quick hello. Chalkfolk.
Got an advance copy of AV1 at my college's station last week, and
have pretty much hoarded it for myself. It's been a cathartic experience.
I don't want to stray into 'review' territory, lest I offend Molly.
But I am kind of interested about the band's choice of "Greenman" as their
second single. I'm just personally not really into the song, which is
irrelevant, but I don't believe something so bombastic and well, reminiscent
of white middle-age western guys sounding leaden whilst attempting African
rhythms (Phil Collins anyone?Flame away.), will sway anyone over to XTC. I
would think that "Easter Theatre," or even "Your Dictionary" would be the
more obvious choices. I'm really not certain of the FCC problems radio would
face if they played "Your Dictionary,"even though Chalkhills has wore this
thread to the bone before. So I don't know.
At any rate, just two other quick things: "Last Balloon"="Chalkhills
and Children", in both terms of track placement, similarity of sound, and
sheer gorgeousness.
Also, do any trainspotters out there notice the opening strains of an
ES song in the final notes of one of the last tracks of AV1. I want to be
vague so as not to spoil the fun, although I may just be hearing things as
well.

So listen between 3 & 6 (I'm told). And if they come to your town, they might be on the radio too. So keep your ears open. Parking around Borders is nearly impossible, so use the public trasportation advise given in a previous post. That post stated that Borders is across the street from Water Tower Place which is absolutely correct. Great interview, it was, it was. Getting to hear some of the material (not being privy to all the demos floating around) was tre' cool. They played "Your Dictionary", so I guess you can spell that stuff on the radio, albeit at 11:00 at night. Tomorrow, it's off to Tower Records ... can't wait!
