Alright...
So, did y'all read my post about seeing "Senses Working Overtime" on MTV2?
It's probably, like, two posts above this one? Well, actually, what
happened was that ANDY AND COLIN WERE FEATURED ON MTV2 AND WERE BEING
INTERVIEWED AND WERE PICKING ALL THE VIDEOS FOR A WHOLE HOUR AND ANDY WAS
WEARING A LAVENDER SHIRT AND THEY HAD TO TURN UP THE MICS WHEN COLIN WAS ON
AND AAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!
I taped part of it, but only the end part, so there's not much else to say.
Andy & Colin picked a few Aphex Twin videos, "Coffee & TV," and
"Sledgehammer." Andy told a great story about talking to the same
production company that made "Sledgehammer" about making the video for
"Shake You Donkey Up," but then Virgin scrapped the single and, according to
Andy, some of his ideas for "Donkey" went into "Sledgehammer." Does that
make any sense? Sorry if it doesn't, I'm tired and elated!
MTV2 also played some other XTC videos during their "hand-picked" segment;
the only ones I caught were the aforementioned "Senses," and "Dear God."
Aren't we all psyched?

I used to be able to rely on 120 Minutes to find out about new music-- hell, Postmodern MTV was half the reason I found out about XTC (I'd seen them on the Letterman appearance in 1989, loved them, forgot the name, then turned on MTV late at night the next week and stumbled upon Andy's week of hosting). I still have copies of hour-long interviews with Johnny Marr and Peter Murphy... sigh. I've seen a little bit of MTV2-- they had a sample on my old cable system, and I got quite hooked. They show videos and everything! I was pretty lucky with radio stations for many years-- when I lived in Atlanta, we had WRAS, Album 88, the Georgia State Universtiy radio station. It was the largest college-only station in the country, at 100,000 watts. When I was just getting into XTC, and trying to decide which album to buy next (since I was 12 and didn't know anyone else who had heard any more than I had), I would memorize the name of a song when I looked at a tape at the store and then request it at some point. A couple years after that, I would request songs just to hear them, and the djs would get into conversations with me about them-- I remember one guy arguing with me that he wanted to play "My Bird Performs" instead of "Dear Madam Barnum." To my knowledge, it's still good radio, but quite a rarity. When I lived in Denver, there was KTCL, which occasionally played promos recorded by Andy and Colin when they did the O&L promo tour. Great, great station. Unfortunately, I hear it's gone to hell-- I was talking to my friend John the other night (who I met a dog's age ago through the LE), who moved to Denver last year, and he said it was still great until late last year, when it switched to the sort of generic "alternative" crap. Even WHFS in DC was decent when I moved to the area in 1993, although my friends said it was going downhill; it's plummeted since then. My father used a woman who worked there for voice talent, and she said that the numbers for HFS were terrible, and they were just clutching at straws, trying to find something that worked. Bah. kids today. I feel old. m.

Well, I tuned in to my local alternative station on the way home from a gig
the other night to find them playing "I Like" by Brak, from Space Ghost
Coast-To-Coast, which is an eminently amusing little tune, so a diamond in
the rough will occasionally turn up. Perhaps all is not lost...

You should hear my redo of the Polices' "Every Little Thing She Does Is
Magic" gearded toward STAR TREK fanatics ("Every Little Thing We Do Is STAR
TREK")... I found it quite interesting that I could work the little original
STAR TREK theme four-note chime from the very beginning of the credits into
the beginning of the Police tune, and that the ST fanfare worked itself into
the song quite well at one point. I now know why "Weird " Al gets his
jollies doing this when this kind of stuff falls into place.

First, let me start with a non-XTC note on an artist that was mentioned here recently, Nick Drake. Now, I don't watch much TV, maybe 2-3 hours a week on average, but I had seen this new Volkswagen commercial and heard this song that I just loved, but had no idea who it was. So, I'm in Aaron's records here in L.A. about two weeks ago and I'm in the checkout line and see this "Way to Blue - An Introduction to Nick Drake" CD and I notice it has this sticker on it saying it features "Pink Moon" from the new VW commercial. But, then it's my turn at the register and I'm running late so I don't get it. But I keep thinking about it and a few hours later I'm at Virgin Records and they don't have it. In fact, they don't have any Nick Drake - not even a slot for him. Well, too make an already too long story shorter, the next week I went back to Aaron's and bought it. What a wonderful, amazing artist he was. I'm now in search of this box set someone on this or another list mentioned. I missed him entirely while he was alive and thank God that I can now add him to my list of favorite artists of all time. A beautiful record for those who haven't heard it or Nick. Now, back to XTC. First off, like I was telling someone recently, I've been listening to XTC ever since "Black Sea" came out, and while I've always been a fanatic about the music, I never got into collecting stuff (although I wish I still had my original "English Settlement" T-shirt and all the buttons I used to have) or joined any of the fan clubs, so outside of what came out on vinyl/CD, I didn't own anything else. Of course, hearing all these people who have the "AV" demos, among other items and reading "Song Stories" I'm realizing how much else is out there. So, now when I go to used shops, I check out the bins. Yesterday, out of the blue, I find a copy of the "XTC 3D-EP" in really good shape, 12" singles for "Grass", "Great Fire", "All You Pretty Girls" and a Geffen promo 12" with three different mixes of "King for a Day" plus two B-sides. All at one store! Then I go to another store in Venice and find a 7" picture disc single of "Wonderland" with "Jump" on the B-side. What a day! Oh, and who in the hell was it that didn't like "Roads Girdle The Globe"? Are you insane?!? While my top 3 XTC songs might change from day to day, I would have to only change two at any given time since "RGTG" never leaves that list. Terry Chamber's drumming on that tracks gives me the chills every time. I'm always willing to let others have their own opinion, but I can't let this one slide (or the mention that "The Wheel and the Maypole" isn't the perfect close for "WSAV2"). Sorry. And, finally, re: Andy on "The List". Okay, I don't have cable, so I've never seen this show. Maybe it is lame. You know what? WHO CARES? I think you're missing the point. ANY exposure for XTC, especially now that such a radio/audience-friendly album is coming out, is welcome. I don't disagree with some of the criticism of TVT's dissemination of info (especially to those of us who would gladly spread the word for them ) as to what and where Andy and/or Colin are doing for publicity, but they get points for bringing them over to do whatever it is that they're doing. Andy - I would imagine - can make any appearance memorable, just by being Andy, so maybe people who aren't as familiar with XTC's work as we are, will seek them out after watching "The List". Isn't that what we really want and all that really matters? Of course, I'm just excited since I get to go to the taping and I'll be sure to file a post immediately upon my return -as will a lot of others I hope. Sorry I took so long. Thanks for listening! I guess these are the kind of people who save up for those cruddy Greatest Hits packages of which so many artistes (including XTC although I guess its not entirely their doing) are fond of issuing not once, not twice, in some cases not even three times with those "bonus unreleased" tracks which upon hearing become obvious why they were unreleased. Whilst I'm ranting I am sure that half the band names chucked about by the listees on here are for trend value only, the "I'm an individual" set (yes, we are all individuals). i listen to pretty much everything, and have been an XTC listener since Making Plans.. back in 1979, and I like most stuff from XTC to Metallica and back again. That is definitely an elitist point of view. Number one, not everybody has a G4, not everybody has a T1. Most people are still running on older machines with either 28.8 or 56kb modem connections. A lucky few have DSL or cable modems. What you are basically saying is that all you poor people who can't afford to upgrade your computer to the latest and greatest, well, shove off. (But that's basically what Harrison said, isn't it?) The other problem is although 90% percent of the people on the web are using Windows boxes (the great unwashed) or Macs, some people are using Linux or, dog forbid, some other OS. Not everybody wants to wait while the Shockwave plugin eventually loads the page. On my platform, the Shockwave plugin is very slow, and Netscape isn't much better. Oh, yeah, I can eventually load the page, but even waiting for the bus to drive up takes five minutes or more. Let me put it this way: I would rather drive for an hour in bumper to bumper traffic to go to work than surf the TVT website on my normal machine. I wait until I have access to a machine which likes the site. Oddly enough, that machine is in the minority. (See "elitist", above.) On the other hand, the Cooking Vinyl site is basically ugly, untested, poorly laid out, and out of date. And it flies. I can surf the entire site in a few minutes. No flash, some content. But most of all, it's usable. >>PS. I've heard "The Ballad Of Peter Pumpkinhead" here once.>> I, too, am among the lucky ones - though I don't give my community radio station the support I probably should. Here in Bloomington, we have a phenomenon called "Community Radio." It is run on a fully volunteer basis. It is NOT an NPR affiliate, nor is it college or "public broadcasting." It's a purely local phenomenon, and I understand that WFHB has won awards for it's community focus. The DJ of the hour gets the program. There are bunches of different types of programs, from "Radio Gnome" (Gong-esque material - probably where Gentle Giant would be played) to newage to bluegrass to local artists. Anyhowe, because of the large heathen contingent here in Bloomington Indiana, "Green Man" got extensive play on WFHB when it came out. And I expect there will be good coverage of Wasp Star. I did hear "River of Orchids" maybe twice on another local station, "Indiana's only Alternative, WTTS 92.3" But they are as likely to play "Dismember You," and Barenaked Ladies in and among the "Thong Song." Anyhowe - it is possible to take the power away from commerce and put it in the hands of the people - it's an extensive effort, and I'm not sure howe long it will last, but www.wfhb.org is giving it a swing. You can (theoretically) hear anything on this station. I noticed by looking at their playlist: http://www.wfhb.org/playlist.html that there is a label called "Nonesuch" represented on this playlist by an artist named Bill Frisell, who seems to have 3-4 numbers on the list.
