Speaking of great 80s bands that disappeared... Does anybody remeber The Nails? They had a song called "88 Lines About 44 Women" that was a minor college radio hit. The singer had a very Lou Reedesque delivery. I think they were perhaps the only New Wave band to surface from the Sunshine State of Florida. I don't personally count Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers as being anything but pop. Anyways, the song "88 Lines About 44 Women" was lifted with new words for a car ad on televsision recently which amused me to no end because the original lyrics were quite raunchy and because someone besides myself actually still remembers it and appreciates it enough to bastardize it for the auto industry! The Nails actually had a couple of good albums with the songs "Janine" and "Things You Left Behind" being among the standout cuts. IN OTHER NEWS: Here in Western North Carolina we have exactly one good radio station, WNCW from Isothermal Community College in Spindale, NC. They have played two of the Wasp Star cuts lately, one of them being "I'm the Man Who Murdered Love". The electricity of this song makes it hard to wait for the official release date of the whole album. It will no doubt replace my favorite new album: Neko Case & Her Boyfriends' "Furnace Room Lullaby". Neko sounds like a cross between Patsy Cline and Chrissy Hynde. Good stuff. While we're on the parental reaction thread i'll make a few comments.
First off my parents seem to appreciate that I like different music than my
little brother, which is almost nothing but Death Metal (though I convinced
him King Crimson were cool because they too could be heavy)..with XTC my dad
has seemed the most perplexed saying "who do these guys sound like?". One of
the people he nominated was Todd Rundgren, at which I just nodded, thankful
he actually picked someone cool. He also thought the ending to Easter
Theatre sounded like something YES would do. I guess the ending vocal
"Doo-Doos etc" reminded him of vintage YES (he's a true man of Vinyl.)
Someone mentioned Kate Bush and her whereabouts. It seems both her
and Peter Gabriel have become anti-workaholics spending more time doing
strange "art" projects than music. Though both are supposedly gathering
material for albums (Peter's been working a long time so I would'nt be
surprised if its a double)..The rumor is that Kate is secretly (maybe!)
working on a new album. Or maybe your right about Tori Amos and her evil
elves kidnapping Kate. I've noticed that most hard-core Tori fans don't like
to be told how similar Kate and Tori are. Some even claim they don't hear
the similarity (creepy!)..Tori also claims she didn't hear Kate until later
in her career(although before her first album)..
On a similar note Stuart Murdoch of Belle and Sebastian claims that
Nick Drake is not a true inspiration because he only heard Nick about two
years ago! I have a friend who dislike B&S for this claim..although Belle &
Sebastian could be telling the truth; with them possibly crafting their
sound from Nick's contemporary cosmic folkie Donovan. This they don't deny
(that I know of)..It could be similar to Andy claiming that not all their
inspiration comes from the Beatles but also from the Kinks and
others(disproving lazy critics!)
Had a great XTC moment at 2:00 in the morning. I was driving when
ITMWML came on..! and not only that but someone was spoon feeding me
Ben&Jerry's Chocolate Fudge Brownie Ice cream! No I didn't dream this..It
Happened! It was also the third XTC song I heard on the radio that Day! I
requested ITMWMl earlier in the day (they eventually consented to play
it)...let's all make sure this song gets requested often! I also heard My
Bird Performs, which I actually hear every once in a while..That's it for
me...back to the gutter..Sploosh!

P.s. Has anyone noticed that if you erase one letter from the Incredible
String Band they become the Incredible STING band? I think some people would
be upset about this..though of course not Sting!

In the Hall of Terror that lurks in back of my brain, the honors for
"migraine soundtrack" falls to the hellish Christmas carol "Ring Out the
Bells," which gnaws at my medulla oblongata like a slavering wolverine until
I want to chase my children around with an axe, yelling, "Heeeeere's Johnny!"
(Or maybe it's just Christmas in general that does that....)
I know what you mean: Techno holds no fascination for me either, and my
dislike makes me feel like a 1954 Rotarian watching Elvis on TV and railing
against jungle music. Is it so terribly *unhip* to feel contempt for such
apparently lazy music? Am I to be drum-machined out of the Corps of the Cool
for thinking that a *chord change* every once in a while might liven things
up? I suppose it had to happen, Old Farthood catches up with everybody and
he's coming for YOU next...

The All-Music Guide (http://allmusic.com -- fast becoming *the* go-to
educational tool for music of all sorts) has a fascinating approach to the
problem of characterizing music without using value judgments like "better"
or "worse" -- an approach we all could learn from, us with our "my group's
great, yours sucks" arguments... Through the technique of collaborative
filtering, they ask visitors to fill out a small, eight-question radio-button
list, asking you to rate artists using pairs of non-judgmental
characteristics like "warm" versus "cold"; "energizing" versus "soothing";
"simple" versus "elaborate." This information is then codified in a database
that places the artist on a continuum of similar artists: If You Like these
Guys, You'll Also Like...
Tried it on XTC and the results are quite uncanny.... Odd thing: The better
known the group, the better the filtering results. Of course this follows:
the greater the statistical sampling, the more accurate the data.

....All declarative sentences form the logical statement "A equals B" --
"Billy is a mountain." What's missing from this construction is the notion
that Billy may be hundreds or thousands of things *other* than a mountain, he
may also be a father, a lover, a drunk, an awesome snowboarder. By using that
pesky little verb "to be" we *force* things to be what we declare them to be,
and nothing else. How about if we had recast "Billy is a mountain" to "Billy
has all the characteristics of a mountain," thus removing that "A equals B"
construction: Doesn't that free Billy from the artificial strictures of
mountainhood?
The E-Prime movement--the "extremists" Rob alludes to--advocates the removal
of the verb "to be" from the language. They're not nuts, they're not
Esperanto cultists or one-worlders, they're theoretical linguists who have a
truly valid point about the nature of logic and language.
I'd recommend two articles if you're interested: Robert Anton Wilson's
"Toward Understanding E-Prime"

I have NOTHING from Beefheart (what's will all the talking about him on this list anyway?). Not sure why I have not bought nothing. I have only the stuff he did with Zappa but plan on picking up something soon. I just bought a pretty expensive Digital Video Camera so I am not ready to spend any more money right now. Speaking of Videos, I will be making a video for "You & The Clouds..." using footage of my daughter (8 months and she already loves XTC... Well, really she loves any stimuli presented, but nonetheless, she can distinguish XTC from other music I listen to) Does anyone know where I could send it so it would get to our boys in Swindon? I am only making this for me, but I figured, if its good enough, it would be nice to hear what Andy & Collin have to say about it. Its not going to be anything too elaborate, but it will be fun watching any video to XTC music for me; especially when its my daughter in the video!

Vivid memory of doing the horizontal mambo on the bathroom floor with a certain Laura W. and praying my parents wouldn't come home from work early and walk in on us - all the while - Melt the Guns is blaring in the background. (Probably shoulda married that girl!) Moved into my first 1 room apartment in 1983 to the sounds of Mummer. Began working extensively as a musician in a popular local "classic rock" cover band around the time of O&L and we would periodically drop Mayor of Simpleton into the middle of a set - much to the dismay and confusion of our loyal followers. Toured northern Ontario with an original R&B/Roots/Alternative band called Monkeywalk (they later changed their name to Driving Blind - anyone out there ever heard of them?). Spent the better part of two weeks curled up in a ball in the back of dilapidated van, blissfully soaking in my brand new cassette copy of Nonsuch under headphones. Finally learned to drive (at 35!!!) last winter, and AVI kept me awake on many late night long drives homes from gigs. I would also play it occasionally in the car in the morning while driving my 2 1/2 year old to preschool (if she wanted a break from Sharon, Lois and Bram) and SHE loved it. Her favorites - by request - were "The Water Song" "The Sunflower Song" and "Climy Bored" (You'll figure it out.) Does this kid have taste or what. And last but not least, we bought our first home this month, and spent two weeks renovating and painting. I managed to download from Napster and for 14 days I drove the contractors crazy blasting Wasp Star from sun up to sun down. thanks for drudging up all those wonderful memories, Jen! Damn right it would...and despite what Ol' Pa Kingston would tell you, Black
Sabbath had/have some splendid pop tunes in amongst the references to Satan
