[insert laughter hear]. A few brief points: 1). Boarded Up actually sounds great as the opener. 2). Might I humbly suggest that Standing in for Joe & We're All Light be removed (the former is just too damn pedestrian to wear the label XTC with any distinction, and the latter conjures images of Paul Simon at his most grating). 3). Wounded Horse t'aint so bad (as Linus said: "All it needs is a little love"). 4). Church of Women's solo sounded retarded on the first pass, and sublime on all subsequent listenings. The song should definitely be THE single. Besides, religion & XTC make for better market shares. 10 outta 12 tunes rates pretty damn fine with me. Bring on the Definitive Collection, Fuzzy Warbles, & the bubblegum project! Thomas & his Amazingly Deep Pockets.

I think the three songs that should be chosen first as singles are "I'm the Man...", "Standing In For Joe", and "Playground". These three have all the writing, playing, and production values that are needed for radio play -- catchy as hell, fun, and "schnoerkellos" (let's see, the dictionary says: without frills), at least for XTC. I guess what I'm trying to say is they have the hooks without too much of the XTC phlegmaticism or quirkiness. Now I love that quirkiness as much as the next guy, but I don't think it helps them in this "sound-bite" world. If they want to have a hit, they have got to think in these terms. I mean, "Easter Theatre" is really great, but it's only for the fans. If the goal is to establish XTC on a solid market basis, they should have been thinking "Greenman" then, and they should follow "ITMWML" with "Joe" or "Playground". If one of them catches fire, they can put out a quirkier number later. One I *don't* think should be a single, despite some popular support, is "Stupidly Happy". I don't think it'd go anywhere. UK RADIO PLAY SHOCK - Nice to here from Huw WS gettting a R2 play, in terms of national radio R2 is definitely XTC 's only hope, perhaps with the lovely Janice Long having a show their she could re-ignite "Agony Andy". London Live (formally GLR - "The Greatest Station In The World.....ever) has had a few mentions recently. Gary Crowley not only played ITMWML last night but then called the album the best release of the week with 12 singles on it and choruses to die for. Of more interest he went on to say that they would have an interview with Andy and Colin soon with copies of the CD to give away. This will be no less than the 5th appearance of XTC on the station since Andy co-hosted and took musical control over the full two hours of Gary's show back in 96 as part of the Fossil Fuel promotion. Must get my trusty tape recorder warmed up. Regarding recent comments on Robert Elms (and forgetting for a moment his Genesis reference!*#$%) at least the guy is passionate not just about London but also music and the music he plays on his show - how many other DJ'son other stations in England can you say that about? Sadly not many. Back to Huw's post, Leyton Orient living in Cardiff - bet you keep that quiet!! I share Huw's thoughts on Swindon more than most being a Wimbledon supporter (what is it about London clubs and 'hillers?) i saw my beloved club conspire to send themselves out of the premier league on the last afternoon of the season. Received my WS from Cooking Vinyl Monday morning, how come some have their signed copy already? Mine arrived with no sleeve with an explanation that due to the US promo tour they have'nt managed to get the signed copies back. I therefore have to wait for their return till i get the sleeve - arghhhhh!!! First thoughts the second six songs better than first six, Colins songs better than AV but have to admit to a slight feeling of disapointment. Not too concerned though as i had same feeling with last four releases on first play but soon changed my mind. Last point before i go "Radios" mentions Lene Lovich good, I say LL great. I picked up a 2CD Stifff years compilation in Germany recently which contains the whole of her first album which is simply superb, quality dips a little on the second CD though. Yes, exactly. Not only that, but the difference between synesthesia and
other similar things (like wild imagination, drugs, or metaphor) is that
it's involuntary and arbitrary. I don't know *why* different letters are
different colors. And I can't help it. And different contexts still produce
the same connection. "A" is *always* yellow. I've been told many times that
it's just that I'm imaginative, and at some point in infancy I must have
associated some colored blocks or a picture book with the letters. If the
letter/color and number/color association were the only varieties of
synesthesia, that *might* make sense, but the music/color, music/shape,
shape/taste, and pain/sound varieties would be difficult to explain by the
same method. At the same time, there is a fair amount of consensus amongst
researchers that synesthesia is somehow connected with the development and
refinement of the senses in infancy and childhood. But whether the
synesthetes fail to make some sort of cognitive distinction that others
navigate successfully or that it's everyone else who fails to retain a more
integrated sensory perception that synesthetes carry on into adulthood,
well, I couldn't venture any guesses. (And I'm certainly misspeaking by even
using terms like "fail" or "successfully".)

I agree. And Harrison pointed out awhile back that All Music
(http://allmusic.com) offers a questionnaire in which you evaluate a band
not in terms of whether you "like" them or not (which is fairly useless
information, most of the time) but rather where their music falls on a
series of descriptive scales. Dense and thick or light and free; cold or
warm; and so on. Because then we can really start getting somewhere. I'm
pleased that people have occasionally been offering colorized impressions of
various songs and albums, even if we can't be sure how many are synesthetic
and how many are value-associated reactions.
Also, Jill asked the other day about specific chords, and how (and whether)
they carry color signatures. I'd like to address that a bit at some point in
the near future, and I'd like to hear other folks' impressions, but frankly,
I'm a little distracted: you see, I just got a new album by a very talented
band you may have heard of, so if you'll excuse me . . .

I told my cousin who works for a library in Michigan about Wasp Star and she is purchasing a copy for the library as well. They already have Nonsuch and AV1. Anyway back to Wasp Star. I listened to it all night and it kept growing on me. I really love Colin's "Boarded Up" and "Standing In For Joe". I was skeptical about Colin's stuff because of AV1 but man I am a true believer once again. I think SIFJ is one of the best songs on the CD. I personally think the 1st single should be "Playground" although I do like "The Man Who Murdered Love" and "We Are All Light". This whole CD is awesome. For me it is in the class of Skylarking and O&L. I was spoiled a little by the demos on "My Brown Guitar" but I got over it. Oh, and the lead on "Church of Women" blew me away and I am an avid fan of the demo lead. Andy starts that lead out with so much feeling. My chin drops every time I hear it. This was well worth the wait. I hope this CD does well for them. I know I am doing everything I can to push it in my neighborhood. "On my mountain Preaching" Jim

I've been reading and enjoying this group for months but I've never dared to post anything, but I'm bubbling tonight, so please bear with me while I crawl out of my cave for a few moments... I just want to say that I'm in my 40's and I was seriously "out of place" standing in line on Tuesday night, waiting for midnight to come so I could purchase Wasp Star. There were several hundred kids buying "m'n m" (I don't know how he spells his name!), along with two or three other artists. A few of the young people noticed that I had two copies of Wasp Star along with a poster and an album size cover, (which I was stupidly happy to accept) . Maybe the struck up a conversation with me because they felt sorry for me...Nevertheless, While in line, a group of the "young people" inquired about XTC and before I knew it, I had several groups of boys & girls wanting to hear a cut or two. Out to my BMW, (which didn't fit in either), and I fired up Playground, I'm the Man who Murdered Love and The Wheel and the Maypole. Before I knew it, I had at least 10 "kids" around. I listened to a couple of "m'n m" tunes and a splendid time was really had by all. I wouldn't have expected something like this to happen in a million years. The final outcome: 3 guys and two girls went back into Media Play and each purchased Wasp Star! Score 5 for our team. I only wanted to share this because I haven't had much faith in the younger generation for a while. XTC touched something with these kids, not to mention myself, (who has been playing the CD over and over all day). It's incredible music and tonight I called at least 5 friends to make sure that they didn't delay in picking up the CD. I'll shut up now, but one more thing... There really isn't a bad cut anywhere on this CD. I know some have slammed Wounded Horse and/or My Brown Guitar, but after multiple plays, they too are growing on me. Was flipping channels last night and on the local CBC news I came across a story on MP3's and Napster etc. I came in half way thru the story. They showed this guy searching and finding MP3's using Napster ( I believe) and lo and behold the computer screen was full of XTC tracks. Then they went to a close up of the PC screen showing the downloading of one of the songs and it was XTC 'Love On A Farmboys Wages'. Wish I saw the whole news story. Went to buy Wasp Star yesterday at HMV. Got there and they had one copy priced at $24.99. No promotion at all at this HMV location. I told the twee people at the cash register, who were wearing big HMV.COM buttons, that XTC were 'Artist Of The Month' on the HMV.com website. They had no clue at all. I'm sure they had never heard of XTC before. This HMV location is located in one of the biggest malls in the Vancouver area. I'm sure the downtown location is a bit more up on things. I ended buying my single CD copy at A&B Sound for $15.79 + tax. In Canadian funds.... We got cheap CD's in these parts......... Will try to get the two CD copy from TVT today. Wouldn't order it on-line as their site is not secure... I'll keep trying the toll free number. Oh Wasp Star..... Haven't heard it yet. I made a nice new C-100 cassette with Apple Venus Vol.1 on side A and Wasp Star on side B. Having a one year old means not blaring new music loud at home at night. Brent in Sunny Vancouver.

There is absolutely nothing to add to the song to make it better, and nothing to take away. My favorite thing is definitely the "Everything decays" section. It is so beautiful and true that you want to smile and cry at the same time! I love that complex feeling of beautiful sadness and joy. In fact, I would say that TWATM is so perfect as to be absolutely timeless. The song will hold true wherever, whenever it is played! So, is Wasp Star XTC's finest album?
