Dear Chalkers and Chalkettes,

Our mutual friend, the venerable and slightly Oriental Mr. Sushiman
made a good point:

> You have the CDs , right ?
yes.
and quite frankly: IMHO anyone on this list who doesn't deserves to be shot
on sight.

> Why waste your time listening to radio stations that play stuff
> you can listen to at home ? Seek stations
> that will expand your musical mind ...

Why waste your time with radio at all ?

I just don't bother with radio anymore; i've already passed that
station (pun! pun! pun!) years ago
Why should i ? Those two or three surprising records a day don't
outweigh all the crap, or the pointless phone-ins, or the blabbering
dj's. Honestly, i'd rather play English Settlement for the 11.384th
time.

BTW: all the above applies even more strongly to TV

Dear Chalkers,

Just one more thing and then i'll leave you in peace (promise)

> And "Travels in Nihilon" with cello lines could give a real dark,
> menacing feel! Valkyres move over!!!

Hands off!
All due respect to everybody else but before we go any further i'd
like to claim T.I.N. as mine. i've already been working on a rough,
yet dark and menacing version some time ago and i simply must
have the chance to contribute this one if we go ahead. Yes, i insist!
I never do but now i just have to, capice?

But I'll make up for it and volunteer to take care of one or two
orphans as well, the songs nobody wants (or dares!) to do. My
Weapon, X-Wires or even Bungalow - perish the thought :)

BTW: if we really want to do this, we'll have to set up a web page &
headquarters and appoint an executive producer(s) to oversee the
whole mega-project. Any volunteers? Instant immortality offered for
the right candidates!

Dear Chalkers,

Tom Griffin spotted a train:

> the XTC book "XTC: Chalkhills and
> Children" (I think that's the title - the one by Twomey) was spotted
> on page A26 of today's (10/5/00) NY Times. Apparently Al & Tipper Gore
> were campaigning in a bookstore in Ohio. The picture has them in the
> music book section, and guess which book is being displayed?

Spooky... almost as spooky as Tipper herself.
Where's Frank Zappa now his country really needs him?

But seriously: can someone please scan & archive this picture?
i'd _love_ a copy for my collection of xtc-related oddities

On a similar note: i spotted John Otway, singer on the Johnny
Japes' "Buster Gonad" single, who appeared as a 'Mystery Guest'
on the Beeb's Never Mind The Buzzcocks quiz show, hosted by
former Swindonite (sic!) Mark Lamarr.

The Beeb's also launching a new regional service called BBC
South, targetted at Oxfordshire and Swindon. The introductory
'leader' started off with an aerial view of a familiar hill-side carving
shaped (and hung) like a horse... uncensored this time.
(ref. Chalkhills picture archives to see how Dobbin's "thingy"
disappeared when our Heroes performed Ball & Chain on UK TV)

oh, i'd love to be running up that hill again and bust some clouds!
that place is truly awe-inspiring with a strange sense of magical
timelessness, as if untouched by the herds of sheep and the hordes
of ramblers in their brightly coloured rain garb.

Well, if everything works out as planned i should be able to go and
live there in about 25 years from now (deo volente). But if i win the
Lottery, make an illegal fortune or find a wealthy Swindonite who'd
keep me as her gigolo i'll move there straightaway. Any offers?

I remember hearing that John Lennon had been murdered while driving home
from work at a local repertory theatre. I was in high school at the time,
11th grade, and was participating in a program at the theatre that allowed
us to see the shows free of charge and to interact with the actors, etc.,
in exchange for our work as ushers. That particular night I was
transporting a carful of young ladies, fellow ushers, who were talking and
giggling and enjoying themselves as the news came over the radio. The loss
of someone like John Lennon is incalculable to some of us, where it barely
scratches the surface for others. As I pulled the car over to the curb
with tears in my eyes, the young women in my car, while concerned about me
and my state of mind, weren't particulary affected by the fact that this
particular person had been eliminated from their lives. The laughing, the
giggling, the talking continued, and I stared blankly through my
rain-spattered windshield as pain, grief, loss, rage, irritation, and
understanding all simultaneously vied for my emotional attention. I've
never forgotten that feeling...........

I find myself already wanting more new XTC music. AV1 was nourishment for
a racked and ravaged XTC-seeking beast. AV2 was a wafer-thin mint.

Please sirs, I want some more.............

Okay; this has nothing to do with the aforementioned song. I just wanted
to contribute to the Futurama thread. I watched the very first episode,
and did an ROTFLMAO at one scene-- where the robot lifts his arms skyward
in response to having a weapon aimed at him, and a brick falls from his
nether region. *Great* visual joke!

Smudgeboy wanted to know what "classic" dance floor fillers we would NOT
allow the DJ to play. Having just been wed, I can answer this easily.
We told our DJ not to play the Hokey-Pokey, the Bunny Hop, the Chicken
dance, nor ANY Frank Sinatra.

Come on gentle Chalk Folk - there's so much talent out there that we
could fill a couple of web sites. I'm ready to give it a go and if
anyone
decides to do it I'm willing to help.

Or if Harrison's original idea takes off, I'll give my best on a

Or even Dear God.

Brian keeps it going:

<< We're all atheists.
There are about 2500 deities of some sort that we know of that have been
believed in during recorded human history. And I'd bet the vast majority of
you believers out there don't believe in 2499 of them. The only difference
between you and me is that I don't believe in 2500 of them.
I think you probably get my point. >>

I get what you're trying to say, but I don't agree, and here's why:

1. According to the dictionary, an atheist is "one who disbelieves in or
denies the existence of God or gods." Therefore, anyone who believes in ANY
God or gods cannot truly be an atheist, because he believes in at least one
God or set of gods. My feeling is an atheist believes in no God or gods at
all. Other religions may call me agnostic or an infidel because I don't
believe in God in the way they have chosen to understand it, but I don't see
how I can be called an atheist if I have at least some kind of belief in a
higher power.

2. Actually, the difference between you and me is I believe in one of the
2,500 concepts of a higher power, and you don't believe in any higher power.
Those 2,500 labels for a supreme being are all human ways of trying to grasp
the same thing, in my opinion.

Religion is a personal thing, and I don't care what you believe, and I'm not
out to convert anybody. I just don't appreciate being called nonsensical
(which is why I responded in the first place ) or an atheist (which is why
I'm responding now) or in some way considered inferior to you in intelligence
(yes, I noticed you labeled your post "the thinking side." )

>Nonsense means to me that it makes no sense. But who's to say for sure?
I direct your attention to "The Fire From Within" by Carlos Casteneda.
Whether there is truth to it or not, it does offer tantalizing
possibilities outside of the rigid Judeo-Christian framework. There is
definitely a lot we do not know, we are just infants spiritually. And
tales of heaven and hell are just our children's fairy tales. And Castenda
is NOT new age! The booksellers just don't know where else to put his

Seesh y'self, cack-face! I'm just a-lurkin' and a-smirkin' over here in this
dark, squalid corner of the world...obviously I've been keeping up to date
with the digests, but I've been otherwise engaged in an almost offensively
intense fashion recently. If anyone cares, I just got a new job as News
Editor at Kerrang Magazine...OK, not standard reading matter for XTC fans,
but at least three of you will have heard of it I'm sure...and have been
fairly hysterical for the last couple of weeks. I don't start for another
fortnight, but it's all a bit exciting so forgive me if I talk even more
bollocks than usual.

Anyway, for what it's worth, I loathe commercial radio with a passion. Any
attempts to justify its vile and caca-flecked vapidity will be treated with
contempt. Brighton (centre of the universe, fact fans) has its own radio
station - Surf FM - which has its moments...there's a cool, eclectic show
called Totally Wired which plays everything from indie nonsense & dance
music through to Beefheart and Sly Stone, and there was a cracking world
music show on Sunday afternoons (although it seems to have vanished)...loads
of Cuban & African tunes - ideal for a spliff & a sunny day...on the whole
though, it's the same ads-interspersed-with-shit-chart-music formula which
people seem to like to so much. Personally, I think the whole point of being
a passionate music fan is that you need not rely on radio & TV for new
artists and music...get off your fat, scabby arse and do some
scouting...commercial radio is for people who want to drown out the tedium
of their lives with some inoffensive, meaningless, background chuntering,
always played at a volume somewhere between barely audible and non-existent.
It's for people who hear, but don't listen. For fuck's sake, why bother with
your CD collection if you're happy with a medley of arse-candy prescribed by
some numb-nuts with eighteen different PR todgers jammed up his holiest of
holes? Eh? EH????

>>XTC's one of my alltime favorite bands.

Name, Tom Kingston. Specialist subject, stating the bleedin' obvious. Mind
you, the man has taste.

>>But nothing this year I've heard is
as gorgeous as "A Long Day's Life" by Kevin Gilbert.

I refer the honourable wind-bag to my previous response. Again, you can't
fault his logic...of course, the most KICK-ARSE thing I've heard this year
is "Ad Astra" by Spiritual Beggars, quite possibly the best hard rock/heavy
metal album of the last twenty years. No shit - it's a stormer! And quite
gorgeous, in a funny kind of way...

Incidentally, any Cheryl fans out there will be interested to know that I'll
be having lunch with the poor, unfortunate woman tomorrow...I will,
naturally, be bringing chloroform and gaffa tape with me. Cackle.

>>Who's been telling you about my dietary habits, Mr. Watt?

Oh come on! Everyone knows you're Virginia's most notorious coprophage, and
don't you deny it, Mr Poopy!

>>Can anyone give me a condensed list of Prefab Sprout dos and don'ts?

Yes. Buy "Swoon", "Steve McQueen" (or whatever it's called outside the
UK...you know, the one with "When Love Breaks Down" on it), "Protest Songs"
and "Jordan The Comeback". The greatest of these is "Swoon", although there
will be those who bemoan the lack of straightforward tunage. Ignore such
nonsense, for 'tis a classic. There is no Cost me |2.99 on vinyl from
Woolworths, back in 198cough and worth every penny. As far as don'ts are
concerned, I wouldn't worry...it's all good. I didn't get the most recent
album...my heavy metal licence would be revoked forthwith...but I hear good
things about it. Besides, apart from an unfortunate incident involving Jimmy
Nail and a crocodile (at least I think that's what it was), Paddy McAloon is
an astonishingly consistent songwriter. Find me another Napalm Death fan who
agrees and I'll buy you a hand shandy.

[collaboration]
>>Frank Black & David J

I want some of your drugs. They must be ever so good. A surf version of
"She's In Parties" anyone? A Bowie-fied trot through "Bone Machine"???
Actually, now I think of it, Frank Black would have made a great
Bubbleman...(come on pop kids, keep up!).

>>Robert Smith & Andy (my wife said that one, she thinks Robert tries to
sound

No offence to your esteemed superior segment, but Robert Smith sounds
nothing like Andy. For a start, Robert Smith can't sing (all part of his
charm...see also John Lydon, Mark E Smith, Joe Strummer etc etc) but also
Andy could never be accused of doing the whiny, sub-goth warbling thing that
financed Smith's hairspray habit for all those years...of course, Robert
Smith did save the world once - 'nuff respect!

..and finally, from the day before my birthday (where's my card? my gifts?
flamboyant displays of affection?? Pah!)...

To us Philadelphians, Mummers' Day will always be January 1.

..Philly..hmmm... home of the famous cream cheese, right? <G>
..spread it thick, kids!

Hope you all have made plans to celebrate The Day of Mummer (October 17)..
Me? I have invited the neighbors over to pop the cork on a fine bottle of
wine, and a liberal helping of that master work, Mummer!! .."Hark, the
herald Mummers sing.. listen to the Wiltshire kings!.."

Today, boys and girls, we will learn about the region of Wiltshire-

A mainly agricultural county in the South of England, Wiltshire covers an
area of 1,343 square miles and has a population of 555,000.

It has its administrative headquarters at Trowbridge with the cathedral city
of Salisbury, and the towns of Swindon and Wilton, famous for its carpets,
being other major centres.

Wiltshire has, in Stonehenge, probably the most famous prehistoric site in
Britain. Said by many to have originally been built for long forgotten
mystical ceremonies Stonehenge graces the Salisbury Plain. The Plain itself
has been a training ground for the British Army since the Napoleonic Wars.

Along with this scenically beautiful area Wiltshire also offers Marlborough
Downs, Savernake Forest and the rivers Kennet and the Salisbury and Bristol
Avons as other physically attractive locations.

The county lists as its main products, wheat, cattle, carpets, rubber and
engineering... AND LAST BUT CERTAINLY NOT LEAST, XTC!..

Because Andy P. himself is purportedly a non-believer, I think a certain
amout of discussion in this area IS on-topic... I mean, I've read talk of
all sorts of other XTC arcana that has little to do with music-making (such
as Andy's soldier collecting). If John R. e-mails me personally and tells me
to shut up, I will, but until then...

Brian,

does this we can also talk about citizen disarmament and abolishment of
voting, as well as the insignificance of democracy, all of which AP has
either advocated or espoused in interviews in the past? In our lovely,
happy, diverse world, no solution or value is equally valid in every
situation or place. Our ideas and beliefs may work fine for us where we
might live, but not for others in the UK, where he is from, or elsewhere.
And vice versa.

Fair's fair. Or- as John Relph has already mentioned to us, we'd best leave
the political stuff at the door. Or is some (political) animals more equal
than otherz?
