Dear Chalksters,

As Mr Wilsher rightly pointed out in the previous posting, I am indeed the
proud owner of SYPTYRP and if I remember rightly it was the cuddly Wes Long
who called me that after we had a spat about whether all xtc songs were the
result of genius. I tended to think not....woe betide me.

Anyway, back to Mr Wilsher. I just find your paeans to xtc songs and song
titles so toe curlingly embarrassing that it amuses me. That's all.

ps. Do you have a lot of time on your hands?

If this has been said before so bear with me.

I just recently got into The Barenaked Ladies, and I noticed how much
they sound like XTC. I love how their lyrics meld together. Their
lyrics to me are similar to XTC, they're very quirky, yet thoughtful.
Take their latest single, "Pinch Me". This song has XTC written all
over it, at least to me. I could picture Andy singing this song for
some reason.

CNN's Headline News reported on their headline ticker that they've broken up

David Bowie - Lodger
Talking Heads - Remain in Light
Joe Jackson - Blaze of Glory
Peter Gabriel - So
Randy Newman - Good Old Boys
Round the Bend - Dark Wood Traveller

You haven't heard that last one. But you will.

Ah, c'mon, Mark -- Andy's not wrong, Dave's not wrong ... they just
parted ways. They had a long, productive run together, and made some
great music. Then they both decided to move on. That happens. Didn't
somebody in the last issue mention "all the split-ups and moves and

John Gardner, in #6-292, re-told the classic story,
which he credits to Thomas Krause, of the Dead Chicken
Launcher ...

"The [American Federal Aviation Administration] uses
the launcher to test windshields of planes to make
sure
they won't break if they hit a bird (in flight).

"The contraption works well. Which is why British Rail
decided to borrow the contraption to make sure
railroad cars had strong windshields too.

"Workers at British Rail launched a chicken, but it
crashed through the windshield and an electrical panel
before coming embedded in a wall inside the train's
cockpit.

"Surprised, BR asked the FAA to investigate what had
gone wrong.

"The FAA wrote up a report in one sentence: 'Always
thaw the chicken!'"

Two thoughts: How come there isn't one of these
devices pictured on the cover of *The Big Express*?
And can we add Dead Chicken Launcher to the list of
band names no one has used yet?

Note to self: Must take out registered trademark on
"Hamster Cannon," the operation of which requires one
cardboard tube from a roll of paper towels, one
hamster of the proper ballistic characteristics (read:
really fat), one pair of strong lungs, and one comfy
chair.

I agree this is a music posting and should be for fun. But music is not life
or death either and if someone wants to go off topic or rave about religion
let them. This is an outlet to relax
And Kierkegaard would approve of the religious utterings since his 'leap of
faith' is central to his understanding of the universe and the 'religious'
man is one of its noblest creatures.(philosophy major flashback, too much
70's acid, system overload)

By the way - I am not religious at all - just like the music. I'm on a
couple music lists (kinks, bowie, spirit) and this is the most fun list
specifically because of the different rants by folks

So ramble on and if you bore me I'll just page down......

I'm the man who purchased stuff
Sir, how do you want that wrapped?

She was sitting on Santa's bended knee
for him to put gifts 'neath her tree
She was asking for a Buick Century

I wrote a check at the department store
Clerk thanked me sweetly with a sugary grin
Phoney courtesy blossomed through the place
while all the sneering temps took my check and said

He's the man who purchased stuff

Oh! its a naughty thong!
I'm guilty! I'm guilty!

And then I turned and said
There will be no more credit to this account
And no more gift wrap to be torn apart

Before I stand in your return queue long,
Your Honour, they'll be increasing my credit line at K Mart.

So dear children I'm here to digress

A quick question, and my apologies if this has been covered, since my
reading over the past couple months has been sporadic--

I went into a record store here in New Brunswick last week and, checking the
XTC section (as I always do, just to rate the store), found a copy of the
Geffen release of "White Music" for $10.99. Is it true that this is out of
print now? I bought it, both because I had heard that, and I'm still
replacing my stolen cds, so I was happy to find it. I'm just curious to
know how lucky a find it was.

In other news.... apparently Dave Davies is going to be giving a philosophy
lecture on aesthetics here next week. Yay.

Thanks to Harrison Sherwood, Rich Hamilton and Bodd Ternhardt for their
recent comments on "Harvest Festival". This song is quite simply a pop
masterpiece.

I thoroughly enjoyed these comments although I cannot agree with Rich's, nor
completely with Harrison's (wonderful fellow though he most certainly is),
analyses. As for Bodd, I suggest you stick to abusing BM. In the
circumstances I thought I'd offer my interpretation of this wonderful song.

The way I see it, the narrator is your eternal under-achiever, looking back
wistfully on one of his few "successes": the fact that the school's star
pupil may once have (perhaps) secretly fancied him. (As an aside, I'm fairly
sure that he wasn't one of "the two who [had] been chosen" - they're
referred to in the third person as if he's watching from the congregation.)
He _may_ have debated whether or not that longing look was a figment of his
imagination; it _may_ not have even been reciprocated by him - cf. "there's
no way I'm going to go out with that toffee-nosed snob". What's for sure is
that the look was never "consummated" - he had to make do with it for the
rest of the year; and it was possibly one of his few claims to fame - see
above ("the school's star pupil fancies me even though I'm bottom of the
class"), something to be (possibly secretly) proud of.

Time goes by and, predictably, she succeeds and moves on and he fails and
stays in his home town in a dead-end job. Then "out of nowhere" the wedding
invitation. It is two things at once: vindication - "that really was a
longing look and she remembered me after all this time"; but also a reminder
of his own failure. And those 5 words which for me transform the song from
merely remarkable to something truly sublime "...and I wish you well". I
find these words almost impossibly moving whenever I listen to the song.
One can imagine the emotions of the narrator as he sits in church watching
the same two from all those years ago getting married, of what might have
been, but in the end he wishes them well, resigned to his own fate but
big-hearted enough ultimately to feel nothing but goodwill. One not only
admires this poor guy but also sympathises with him. Those 5 words are
invested with so much meaning that, as Todd and Harrison have already
remarked, one can only wonder at the genius of the writer - he only needed
5, short, simple words to say all that?

And having said all that, in the words of Chris Conroy, I really like the
tune too.

All the best!
Simon Deane

Hi all:

First, thanks to those of you who've been recommending Nick Drake. I've had
Five Leaves Left and Pink Moon on heavy rotation. What great music for these
dreary, chilly fall days.

Second, I'm looking to buy a CD burner, and I know absolutely zero about
them. I'd appreciate your advice (off-list, of course) on features to look
for, what to avoid, what I can expect to pay, etc. My main reason for wanting
one is to make CD copies of my albums, if that's even possible. I'd also like
to use it for burning MP3s onto CD, which is really new territory for me.
Thanks in advance for your help.

XTC content: I'm a little late with this vote, but (seeing how it's election
day and all) I like Wasp Star far better than Apple Venus I. Very simply, AVI
has a few tracks I tend to skip over, but I don't want to skip anything on WS.

Hi folx,

Don't know how many of you read the Classifieds on the Chalkhills site.
There has been an interesting artefact advertised there for the last couple
of weeks, which is well worth the price of entry.

It being the 3DCD. This comprises a couple of gigs from the Andrews (and
pre-White Music) era, an assortment of early demos and an amusing Partridge
recollection of the early days to round out proceedings.

I am in no way affiliated with this project (I merely read the ad and duly
responded) but....this is quite possibly the most elaborate bootleg I have
ever seen, XtC or otherwise. The quality is astounding, particularly the
packaging which is almost of a calibre to convince you it's an official
release. It even comes with its own pair of 3D glasses ferchrissakes!!!

As well, the gigs themselves shed a new light on the Andrews era XtC. This
is definitely not my favourite line-up, but the gigs demonstrate their
anarchic energy perfectly, which was never fully captured on record to my
thinking.

If you're at all interested, get in contact with the affable Sam
(samspam@supanet.com). I get the distinct impression this bootleg is a real
labour of love for him, and you can certainly tell.

Cheers,
Dom
