hello, chalkheads!
just wanted it known that i was totally psyched to see a
missive in here from an xtc fan (like myself) from north
carolina! man, is this world getting smaller and smaller,
or what??? ("what in the world???....." indeed!!)
i swear, i was beginning to think i was the only one!!
i've been a dedicated fan of these guys now ever since i
first experienced their classic "english settlement" release
and am glad to report that i haven't been the same since!!
my wife actually turned me on to the band by presenting
"english settlement" to me as a b'day present back in '82.
man, i remember playing the grooves slam off that thing!!
there honestly was not a day that went by that i didn't put
it on the old turntable (remember those?) at some particular
point!! then "mummer" came out afterwards and that was it
for me.....HOOKED!!!!!!! partridge's words and message hit
me like a ton of bricks. and colin's melodies soothed the
impact! LOL
god, these guys can do NO WRONG in my book! hell, if they
put out a cd of them singing nothing but the phone book, i'd
be standing in liner to buy it!!
over the years since my introduction to xtc, i've amassed
quite a collection of legitimate releases, of course, along
with other more diverse and rare collections, such as dave
gregory's "remoulds" (on cdr) and andy's "jules verne's
sketchbook" and "the bull with the golden guts" (both of
these on tape). i'd eventually like to get a cdr copy of
the partridge items, but wouldn't even know where to begin
asking -- maybe here?? (hint-hint)
i enjoy trading music with other people, although i know
i'll turn a lot of fans off by stating that currently i do
not have a cd burner, so anything i dub for others would be
to tape...at least until a burner finds its way into my
home. (someday soon hopefully)
i'm just so excited about this band though, people!! they
write the greatest tunes that make you THINK and while
you're thinking, you're tapping your feet! how can any band
top that???
i really enjoy talking GOOD music with other people / fans,
so anyone reading this, please feel free to e-mail me and
let's get some quality talk going about a quality band,
among others, okay?
XTC RULE!!!!!!! :-)

That only took 2 and a half months. Song Stories is finally mine!!! This may not be a big deal to you folks over in the UK, but I have had one hell of a time getting this book. Meanwhile, everyone references it and reviews abound and still I couldn't get it to me. Long story short (or not): Ordered from Amazon on September 15th along with Chalkhills & Children and both Punk Diaries. Next day, Amazon says it might take a little longer for Stories to arrive so they will go ahead and ship the other 3 books. Next email says "You should receive Song Stories on Oct. 19th." October 19th: "Your order cannot be processed as the book cannot be obtained. " Damn IT! A week later, as I was about to throw out some copies of the New Yorker I see an ad from Barnes & Noble: Specializing in hard to find and Out of Print books!" Order placed on Oct. 25th. On-line comments say that it is in stock! Joy! Order confirmed and set to arrive the following Monday (this was when I posted "Guess what I will have in my hands in 3 days?") UPS tracking number says that the manifest has been received. I relax and wait. And wait. This leads to a series of phone calls between me, B&N and UPS to confirm that I haven't received the book. UPS calls 3 times AND stops by my house to ask if I have gotten the book yet. B&N finally says they will put a trace on the package. UPS never picked anything up from the warehouse even though their records had it in the tracking system. B&N cancel my order at my request and offer a $5 (WOW!) coupon for my 2 weeks of playing tag with no negative result. I advise them that they should let their web team know that they might want to change the status of this book to WAAAAAY on back order. Damn, damn IT! My obsession at a peak, I contact Hyperion (the US Distributor). They look. Nope. I finally catch my breath and do more research and circle back around to The Bungalow article on the book (http://www.users.dircon.co.uk/~nonsuch/stuff.htm). I contact Helter Skelter (http://www.skelter.demon.co.uk/index.htm) via email. YES! I place order and receive discount for mentioning Bungalow (Thanks!). Book arrived 1 week (five bus. days) later. Moral for the US citizens wanting to enjoy the book: Go directly to the address above! On-Line retailers have misleading info on their web sites so go to the horse's mouth. B&N still lists this item as in stock. Sigh. ____________________ So, now that I am happier, I will give a little back. I posted about the article in CMJ a few months ago. I have started the bare-bones of a web site and have put the article text and the photo up for everyone who have never seen it.
