By God, this is one of the best poems I have ever read on the topic!

Todd recommended the PBS radio show, "Hot Jazz Saturday Night," and I'll
bonk my head on the ceiling jumping up & down seconding his
recommendation. It sometimes goes overboard with irritatingly contemporary
live Trad recordings of Riverwalks from various decrepit Midwestern riverine
cities, but when Rob Bamberger deigns to spin the Beiderbecke in the
original shellac vernacular, he shucketh you not, Jaxon. What's that you
say? Stuck in Patagonia with the No-Local-DC-Radio-Access Blues Again? They
do Real Audio feeds, live and archived, and that ain't no jive! Off you go:
http://www.wamu.org/schedule.html.

(Ho-lee shit! I just found a live WFMU feed! I'm in My Blue Heaven!
http://www.wfmu.org/ssaudionet.shtml)

And while we're on the radio-recommending right-of-way, may I put in a word
for "American Routes," Nick Spitzer's show, which is naturally syndicated
and also RealAudio-fied at http://www.americanroutes.org/ ? Everything from
Cajun to Klezmer, with stops at Albert Collins, Sonny Rollins, Marty
Robbins, and Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown, yas yas... Close yo eyes and let
that suburban white-boy ennui wash out you system, getchoo a high colonic
dose of the Music That Made America Great, buckaroo--no furriners aloud,
even thems as deserves it.

Hi, I'm a new subscriber to Chalkhills, so this may
have been said before: there is a strong tradition of
English (sub)urban bands which stretches back to the
Beatles and earlier, and who's current manifestation
is, in my opinion, Blur, which involves lyrics of
imaginative quality, social commentary and the origins
of what it means to be English, whether in an urban or
rural environment. Compare/contrast Blur's "Parklife"
and "English Settlement", "The Great Escape" and "The
Big Express", "13" and "Skylarking". Incidentally, I
seem to recall way back when "English Settlement" was
released there being comparisons to "The White Album"
(one journalist referring it as their "Green Album").
But my memory's not what it used to be, and it was a
long time ago.

Hope this helps

oh yes we do!

Just take a listen, it's dead easy.
If you hear a guitar, that's Andy.

I admit that this album is not on high rotation on my personal station
so i don't know the relevant tracks by heart. I know, i know... i should
but contrary to popular belief I _do_ have another life as well.
Several actually...

BTW: to call this euh... experi-mental album a "gem" is stretching it
a bit IMHO. One or two decent tunes perhaps but the rest is
electronic self-indulgence to the extreme. Not my cuppa at all

If you are looking for a real and relatively unknown gem perhaps
you should try the Harold Budd / Andy P. collaboration Through The
Hill instead. A bit arty-farty perhaps but the music is excellent.

PS: Many thanks must go to my new Japanese friend Nishimatu for
her awesome work on Virtual Terry. I love him to bits (pun intended)

Ed, I loved seeing Robyn! He was great, and yes, had a recurring story
throughout the long 3 hour show. You could tell that he came up with the
story on the spot, which made it more interesting. I picked up a bit of
memorabilia that I am selling on ebay now, including his new CD Star For
Bram, which is great. He is playing again this Saturday and I might go see
the show if I have time :)

I loved Camper's whole career in music. They are just one of those groups
that speak with their music. Anyway, they broke up shortly after Key Lime,
but they are somewhat back together; at least in a different form. Victor,
Jonathan and Greg all have been on the Cracker tour and they have sort of
dubbed a joke name "Cracker Van Beethoven." They have been playing botch
Cracker/Camper songs. In fact, I missed them 2 weeks ago because I was
really ill, which is always a nice time to be ill (when your fav. band is in
town)! Oh yeah, I know of Monks. The members have worked on SEVERAL
projects together over the years. Each time I think I have everything
interesting, something else pops up.

XTC Content of the day: Stop talking about AV2!!! I am already dying in
anticipation for it to come out. I have not even heard the demo's yet! No,
really, I wish it would come out already. Especially because there is not
much new stuff coming out that is worth buying. I already curious of their
future plans after AV2. I wonder what they have planned. We all know AV2
was written a few years ago. Really, all they are doing now is the final
mixes. They must have done some other stuff the past few years!

Which track should I be pestering my local radio

haven't heard the demos.

My vote is for "We're All Light". I'm sure I've
metioned it before, but it sounds really radio
friendly to my ears. Then again, I'm blissfully out of
touch with top 40 music, and have been for at least 10 years...

I think that the Beatles analogy is a pretty predictable trap for anyone to
fall into as we tend to compare things that aren't as familiar to things that
are overly familiar. It provides context. In defense of most critics (and
those that believe the Sky-Pepper comparison is apt), I believe the
comparison stems from both the way the songs run together, production touches
and the fact that it's a concept album.

You could probably compare it just as readily to Pet Sounds as to Pepper.
Regardless, it's a great album. I know that McCartney tends to keep up with
the music scene and wonder if anyone has read any interviews where he has
mentioned Sky or Xtc?

Hi everyone,

Just some words about amazing releases I've caught this winter:

- The Drunken jam sessions by XTC (very funny)
- Storefront Hitchcock by R.H. ( welcome Ed Kedzierski !) this
soundtrack is simply gorgeous!
- Melancholy Sun by Jeff Kelly (4 CD compilation from solo works by the
-underrated-frontman of the Seattle's combo Green Pajamas) great bunch
of -mainly introspective- songs, previously released as cassettes.
- Glass Flesh,a tribute to Robyn Hitchcock performed by fans
(interesting)
-Malcolm Scarpa, Dakota Suite, Silvio Rodriguez, Red House Painters,
They Might Be Giants continually being revisited, and many more...

I decided not to listen to the Apple Venus 2 demos till the final
product comes out, but I'm very intrigued about the guitar solo on
Church of Women, I 'm totally in love with that demo's part,
mmmhhhh.....

Finally, excuse my language mistakes, and a message to some members of
this list: I've changed my e-mail address .

Waiting for positive AV2 vibrations

William " Naked Lunch " Burroughs built himself one of Reich's Orgone
Accumulators : an experimental device to collect orgone energy , the natural
life force which Reich believed circulated in the atmosphere and which could
be concentrated using a simple box made from layers of organic material and
metal . He built a wooden box 8 feet high , lined with galvanized iron .
Inside was an old icebox , which in theory doubled the effect . The box was
supposed to boost your orgone level , tone you up and get your sexuality
flowing again , and Burroughhs was convinced of its efficacy . " The Orgone
box does have a definite sexual effect " , Burroughs wrote later . He made a
little portable one from a gasoline can wrapped in organic material . " The
orgones would stream out of the nozzle of the gas can . One day I got into
the big accumulator and held the little one over my joint and came right off
" .

Only 18 days to go until AV 2 is in my hands ...

Hello to all,

I got this little tidbit from alt.music.tmbg. The original poster got it
from the AOL TMBG board, and *that* info came from another board. Now I can
share it with you. Note that the letters XTC *do* appear in the following:

>>Hi all,

It looks like TMBG is gonna be contributing a track--"Ram On"--to an upcoming
Sir Paul McCartney tribute album, along with a whole bunch of other awesome
artists, including Sloan, Ben Folds Five, Fountains of Wayne, Barenaked Ladies
and Owsley. I got this info from the Owsley Onelist, straight from Owsley's
brother's mouth, so it's accurate! Here's a tentative lineup of the
artists/bands slated to participate in the project:

Owsley: Band on the Run
Foo Fighters: Jet
Neil Finn: (track is TBD)
XTC: Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey
Ben Folds Five: Listen to What the Man Said
Fountains of Wayne: Baby's Request
Squeeze: Junior's Farm
Brian Wilson w/The Wondermints: Dear Boy
Barenaked Ladies: Junk
Matthew Sweet: Every Night
The Merrymakers: No More Lonely Nights
Sloan: Waterfalls
John Faye Power Trip: Coming Up or World Tonight
They Might Be Giants: Ram On
The Interpreters: Maybe I'm Amazed
Echo and the Bunnymen: My Love
Robyn Hitchcock: Goodbye (prev. unreleased McCartney track)

i'm not trying to honk my own horn here, just simply informing anyone who
is interested that there are several new xtc articles on the chalkhills web
site.

i am pleased, however, that i've been able to make several contributions
(including 5 or so other articles posted previously) to the xtc database of
information here in cyberspace. it's just my little way of sharing the
information i have collected over the years with everyone else around the
world.

it is due to all of the hard work done by john relphs that i've been able
to do so, so i want to thank him (again) here on the digest.

thanks john; my life would be a lot less interesting if there wasn't the
chalkhills site and the digest. i always look forward to finding a digest
in my inbox and i'm greatly disappointed when there isn't one! please keep
up the great work!

 peace & xtc,

Hi Y'all

Just got this off the Fountains Of Wayne list which got it from the Owsley

skimmed the titles and didn't see anything that looked relevant.

I absolutely love the song XTC are mooted to be doing, and can someone

the song with the upper class twit accent. Anyway here's what I'm excited
about

===========================================================

I recently received a confirmation that Owsley will be participating
on the upcoming Paul McCartney Tribute CD (I believe that it's some sort
of charitable benefit for cancer research). This is excellent news!
Owsley, himself, is quite over the moon about the opportunity to pay
homage to one of his biggest heroes! What's also nice, is that Owsley will
be producing/recording/performing one of Sir Paul's most popular songs,
"Band on the Run!" This is so cool! What an honour for Owsley! Below,
please find a tentative line-up of other artists/bands slated to
participate in this project:

Owsley: Band on the Run

Nobody seems to have mentioned this. I do wish that XTC were doing a
better song.

from squeezefan:

Some of you may recall the McCartney Tribute CD that's been bandied about
during this past year (especially you Pat!), and I don't remember whether
I told you that I was asked to get involved in it as a co-producer
responsible for solidifying the artists and the label deal. Not clear
yet whether Todd will make the time to contribute a track, but I'm
working on him about it! Meanwhile, thought you'd enjoy being among the
first to hear about the current line-up of artists who have committed to
the project so far:

*Echo and the Bunnymen: My Love (unless a larger name act insists on it)
*Barenaked Ladies: Junk
*Squeeze: Junior's Farm (unless they pick another before recording)
*The Merrymakers: No More Lonely Nights
*John Faye Power Trip: Coming Up or World Tonight (if Coming Up doesn't
*Sloan: Waterfalls
*Foo Fighters: Jet
*The Interpreters: Maybe I'm Amazed (unless a larger name act insists on
*Fountains of Wayne: Baby's Request
*Owsley: Band on the Run
*XTC: Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey (suggested)
*Ben Folds Five: Listen to What the Man Said
*Robyn Hitchcock: Goodbye (previously unreleased McCartney track)
*Brian Wilson w/The Wondermints: Dear Boy
*Matthew Sweet: Every Night
*They Might Be Giants: Ram On
*World Party: Teddy Boy
*Neil Finn: (track is TBD)

We hope to nail a label deal for the project soon (all the majors have
been pitched) and there will likely be a downloadable online deal as
well. Target release date is Fall.

FYI,

I had an xtc related dream last night and it was by far one of the weirdest
dreams i've ever had. What happened was I was in a strange house
baby-sitting some kids, when suddenly Andy, Colin, and Dave were there.
Eventually Terry apperared and started shooting a gun at us. We all ran
into the house and thought we were finished...until out of nowhere Joe Don
Baker saves us by shooting at Terry until he ran away(Incase your wondering,
Joe Don Baker is a B-movie star from the 80's. MST3K fans will know him

Subject: Me, Myself, Irene and XTC?

Someone questioned this before, but I am questioning
it again....is XTC still slated to be on the
soundtrack to the Jim Carrey movie Me Myself and
Irene? It was brought up recently that this album
would feature Ben Folds Five, Smashmouth and others
doing covers of Steely Dan songs. This was confirmed
by the newest issue of Entertainment Weekly. Thanks. Travis.

Subject: my trade list

Hi
As promised a couple of digests ago, here's a link to
my tradelist:

http://www.mindspring.com/~t.hewitt/tradelist.html

AS you'll see, there's a bunch of XTC on it, as well
as some other stuff as well.
I'm in the process of finishing up a few trades, so
check back, in a couple of weeks there should be close
to a dozen more titles.

Tyler
