First to The Skylar King: Amen

I hate waiting for good albums to come out. I have to wait to April to get
the new (greatest hits) Cracker CD, and I have been waiting impatiently for
my copy of the Storefront Hitchcock video, the new Devo release, as well as
AV2. Is there anything new that XTC fans would recommend? My tastes vary,
but overall, my favorite groups are the above mentioned and groups like
TMBG, Costello and the Pixies.

Any help would be appreciated!

since it couldn't be his actual racial category, what makes wayne newton
a WASP star, his fan base? i don't know about that. las vegas itself
was founded by a certain overly-famous sicilian group of murderous
gangsters (with a couple of east coast/midwest jewish gangsters) who
came out west via new york and chicago. the people who see shows there
come from all over the country and world and span a wide variety of
genetic pools.

you may think that wayne "mr. las vegas" newton to be the all american
bullet-headed saxon mother's son but he's actually half native american
(and looks it!) and doesn't keep it a secret. he describes his on-stage
costuming as "the indian wedding cake." his act is not to be missed. i
like wayne. he's got a rehab center for snakes at his house as well as
albino peacocks running around. he associates himself with native
symbology like eagles and a single feather.

i think wayne would do a great version of "river of orchids."

let's face it, the biggest WASP star was elvis presley and he's
definitely "around."

MY favorite WASP star would have to be lee hazlewood (who looks like he
could be wayne newton's sinister-looking older brother) especially his
albums "love and other crimes" and "40."

i take it back, the best contribution to WASP-ness would have to be
brian wilson and his band the beach boys, especially the albums that
span from "pet sounds" through "sunflower." brian and the boys win the
WASP star award.

i bet andy, colin and dave would agree with that.

Tschalkgerz!

With the right kind of software, music scores for songs can be generated
from MIDI files.
Several MIDI files of XTC songs exist on the Chalkhills site (including a
few from yours truly), so this is one avenue.
I, too, have looked for XTC sheet music.
I became instead a MIDI maker.
Good luck to you.

Me, too. If that happens, our collective good taste will be vindicated, our
favorite artists will pocket a ton of well-earned cash, quality pop music in
general may regain a higher public profile, and best of all: we'll get to
read posts to Chalkhills about how terrible it is that the boys have "sold
out."

John Lerfald wondered:
"What the hell is Monday-morning quarterbacking??"

As others have probably pointed out by now, American professional football
games have traditionally been held on Sunday, and the team is led by the
quarterback. "Monday-morning quarterbacking" refers to the inevitable
practice of second-guessing the strategic decisions that were made during a
game that is now past.

Um, I don't mean to be difficult, but it seems to have a lot more to do
with the planet Venus than the goddess. The Mayans would have had no way of
knowing who the goddess Venus was. I like their name for the 2nd planet
rather better than the Western one which has come into modern usage. More

I've heard it but didn't consider it essential enough to get it when I
could have found it used or cut-out back in the 80's. It's also notable for
the very first recorded cover of Ian Hunter's "Once Bitten Twice Shy," at a
time when the members of Great White were still in high school, no doubt.
The Talking Heads song in question is "The Book I Read," which is the main
reason I considered getting it, being that Talking Heads '77 was the first
punk/new wave album I brought, after swooning to Elton John and Queen at
thirteen and fourteen respectively.

CAUTION...NOT MUCH XTC HERE...(nothing to see here...move along)

Molly asked what was in our disc players.....I rather like this question.

I drive my car so infrequently that it's always interesting for me to check
what's in my car changer...so I dashed out to do so and found these discs:

The Hang Ups ~ So We Go
Kronos Quartet ~ Black Angels
Brazil Classics (compiled by David Byrne)
Prefab Sprout ~ Swoon
Eric Matthews ~ It's Heavy In Here
Jaco Pastorius ~ Live in NYC Volume 1 (no, volume 2 isn't titled WASP STAR)
Stevie Wonder ~ Innervisions
The Blue Nile ~ A Walk Across The Rooftops
David Mead ~ The Luxury Of Time
Allan Holdsworth ~ Metal Fatigue

I'm listening to the Hang Ups cd now...I'd forgotten how perfect it was.

My home player's full o XTC at the moment.

What are all you freaks listenin' to?

Hi Chalkaholics,

I know the connection "Wasp" = White Anglo etc. has already been done to
death, as regards the title of the new album. I'm wondering, on the other
hand, if it's been suggested that "Wasp Star" might refer to those
euphemistic asterisks that find their way in print in "family papers" and
the like (for such loaded words as "sh*t", "f*ck" or "Dear G*d", fer
exemple).

That would seem like a very Partridge-like play on words to me (and a
sneaky way to mock every "League of D*c*nc*" still lurking about in
those not-so-remote regions of the Wasp Nebulae ; hey, how about a
"League of XTC" as a counterweight?).

Just my two cents (1,20 something up North),

Hello Chalksters:

Thought you'd all be interested in the article about Wasp Star
that appears as part of the cover story in April's ICE. In it, besides a
blurb about Andy's feeling that it's one of the best albums he's been
associated with, is the following song sequence:

                             Playground
                             Stupidly Happy
                             In Another Life
                             Some Lovely (My Brown Guitar)
                             Boarded Up
I'm the Man Who Murdered Love
                             We're All Light
                             Standing in for Joe
                             Wounded Horse
You and the Clouds Will Still Be Beautiful
                             Church of Women
                             The Wheel and the Maypole

Since the first three songs' and the last song's placements
have been previously mentioned in an earlier Andy comment, the
above looks suspiciously like the official running order of the album.
To quote Mr. Partridge: "What d'ya think t'that?"

Cheers,
F.A.

Chalkfolks,

In #6-45 Richard Pedretti 'hyphen hyphen' Allen reported that:

> Andy added '...or maybe call it "Red Lorry, Yellow Lorry!"' ...um ...I
don't think so <

Me neither :)) Besides there was an English band of that name, once upon a
while back (mid Eighties??). Although I've no recollection of any of their
stuff, I believe that they released several albums

John Lerfald asked:

> What the hell is Monday-morning quarterbacking?? <

Blimey, and this from someone with (what appears on the surface to be) a
Stateside email address!!

(The answer?? Oh, you know, the sort of person who dissects their teams'
performance the day after a game explaining fulsomely how they (the team or
the person, your pick) could, and perhaps should, have done much better -
ie. most any of us with an interest in sports of one sort or another, I
guess. Oh, and FWIW, it is also the title of a (very) old computer
(American) football game)

and the inimitable Molly Fanton pleaded:

> I hope even more people show up <

At three o'clock in the morning?? Not a hope ;)

> I was wondering what you people have in your CD players <

(I know I shouldn't, but I just can't resist. Sorry folks) Well, the CD
drive in the PC currently holds Steve Hillage's Motivation Radio, the most
recent visitor to the hi-fi in the lounge was Joe Jackson's Blaze Of Glory
and the autochanger in the car (where I get to do most of my listening)
holds Another Music In A Different Kitchen / Love Bites - The Buzzcocks,
Feelings - David Byrne, Way Beyond Blue and Internation Velvet - Catatonia,
The Best Of The Waitresses, and Help Save The Youth Of America - Billy
Bragg. The latter two are new arrivals, thanks to the wonders of Internet
shopping. Although I was a little disappointed that a couple of my
favourite Waitresses' tracks from Wasn't Tomorrow Wonderful aren't on this
compilation it is nevertheless a little gem and will probably stay in the
car CD player for the next couple of weeks whilst other albums rotate
around it. No XTC this time out, but Apple Venus is still a regular request
from my bairns

It's been close to two months now that I've been a subscriber to Chalkhills
Digest. As a 36 year old, American, sometime tie-wearing, cubicle-dwelling
professional with a lovely wife and two little kids I find myself curiously
anticipating what I'll read each time I'm sent new postings. XTC has been a
part of my life now since around 1984. Why? Maybe it's the lyrical poetry
and nice sounds they make so well.

In 1984, at Kent State University in Ohio, they were hip to listen to.
Anyone remember the Minute Men or Husker Du or Talking Heads? Those bands
faded away. XTC has lasted.

I'm saying nothing new here, but I'm sure you Chalkhillians understand.

Thanks.

Yes, it's a bad pun, but it fits...

Okay, here's my story. So there's this girl I like, right? And I'm trying to
gather the courage to ask her out. I'm sitting by the phone, and I can't
make myself pick it up and dial. I'm just so nervous, I know she's going to
say no, I know I'll be humiliated and have my heart broken.

That's when I break out the XTC

I put on Was a Yes, from Bull with the Golden Guts. I don't know what it
was, but the verse perfectly captured how I felt about the whole situation.
I was nodding my head slowely... I felt like MY head was on a choppin block.
and then I got to the chorus, and It made me realize that, yes, the process
of being 16 years old and trying to ask a girl out may be horrible, but it's
worth it if the answer is a yes.

and it is. and it was. and I have a date this weekend.

I was thinking about what the Mayans must have thought about planets like
Venus. Most pagan societies knew more about the stars than folks
today. It was the only show in town at night. Without knowing that Venus
was a planet, they knew it sure as hell didn't behave like the other
stars. It looks like a star, but it doesn't act like one. It doesn't move
the same way, or follow the same rules. Reminds me of XTC.

they split up to persue solo careers, and although i was saddened by the
