I've been searching day and night for more than a week and have never found a single WS track. And yes, I swear on a stack of Song Stories that I will buy the real thing, probably several times, as soon as TVT lets me. But I can no longer bring myself to plow through another Chalkhills clogged with descriptions and discussions of a record I won't be able to hear for another month and a half. And it's not the "spoiler" aspect that's been discussed here -- the written word is simply not capable of "spoiling" the auditory experience -- it's just that every word devoted to Wasp Star is meaningless to those of us who haven't heard it. For us, this list is becoming a waste of time. At this rate, by the time the record actually comes out, you'll probably be "all talked out" on the damn thing! So goodbye for now, Chalkhills. I will be archiving all Digests, unread, until a kind soul zaps me a digitized preview of Wasp Star or until I obtain the disc version itself. Then I can feel like I belong here again. On another more depressing note, that show on that station used to be called the Retro Hour. All they played was music I listened to in college back in the early and mid 80's. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 13 Apr 2000 01:22:35 EDT From: WTDK@aol.com Subject: Wasp Star where is thy sting? (why right here). Message-ID: <4b.2959463.2626b39b@aol.com> Actually it didn't bother me much to hear about the new album as long as it was fairly general (after all, I had been listening to the demos for quite some time). What did bug me was the really negative review. I'm personally not that interested in the harsh reviews (if I were I'd pick up Spin magazine). I don't mind a fair assessment of the album overall, but I'd still like that chance to discover the magic for myself. The best reviews tend to cover the highlights of something and leave the magic that makes it tick (or not) intact. To me it's like when the films The Sixth Sense or The Crying Game first came out. While you might want to hear about them you still want the chance to discover the twists and turns yourself. While Wasp Star isn't an unknown I'wanted to be surprised by some of the changes from the demos to the final version. I was. It's still in the CD player and alternates with a couple of other new purchases. The really cool thing was to listen to Wasp Star and then listen to the last five albums. It puts the album's qualities into perspective and gives you a greater appreciation for the songwriting on Wasp Star. Having heard the album (courtesy of Vee Tube) I like it a lot. I'm probably going to do like last time and buy four or five copies to give to friends. I'd probably do that even if it wasn't that great. It's well worth picking up. I personally feel it's one of Andy and Colin's best efforts. Although I have to admit it sounds different since Dave's departure (just as Mummer did after Terry left). The dynamic isn't the same but it allows both guys to grow as songwriters and performers. Besides, it sounds like they're getting along better. As to where it will fit in their catalog in terms of quality, well, that's something only time (and personal taste) will tell. All's fair in love and music. I can't I hate any of the band's albums. I like some less than others but all have their moments. Love Playground, Stupidly Happy, In Another Life, My Brown Guitar, Boarded Up. I'm The Man Who Murdered love is an improvement on the demo. Still waiting for The Wounded Horse to grow on me. You and the Clouds Will Still Be Beautiful demonstrates that Andy should write love songs more often. Did anybody expect a huge departure after so many years? I didn't and am thankful that the skills that have made so many of the band's albums so stunning are still sharp. Both Andy and Colin introduce a wide variety of subtle changes to their sound.

Now usually the music that comes to pass time in hockey stadiums reads like a laundry list of late 70's-early 80's schlock rock (Styx, REO Speedwagon, Twisted Sister - Pardon to any fans of these bands, but that's a whole other story). Anyway, I am suddenly hit with the realization that the music that's playing is none other than "Life Begins at the Hop"! Amazing for two reasons: 1) This is a hockey game (see above argument unless someone thinks XTC and Night Ranger would appeal to the same demographic) and 2) this is Dallas. Maybe there is hope here after all, I think to myself! Maybe they'll play a little Jellyfish next! But no, of course the next song is "Rock You Like a Hurricane" by The Scorpions. Oh well, I can dream. --Marg. Proud reader of Chalkhills since '91!

Someone else wrote: > ====radio airplay is NOT the same as listening to MP3's, since artists earn > royalties from having their music played on the radio. The royalties paid for this are minimal. I believe they are less than $10 per year for even the biggest hits. I believe Tom Verlaine (Television) gets payed something like 96 cents per year for Television's classic Marquee Moon record. What happens is that radio stations pay ASCAP/BMI, and this money is distributed to the artists. It isn't based on how often it gets played, because I've never heard of a radio station reporting its playlist to either of the two companies. The MP3 and artist compensation issues are valid, but not from the point of view of radio play royalties! ====================================================================== Joe Hartley - UNIX/network Consultant - jh@brainiac.com Without deviation from the norm, "progress" is not possible. - FZappa

Message-ID: <000101bfa4f3$c2ebba60$3744b5cf@default> Let's get ahead of ourselves for a moment here and ask those who are in touch with the band... what is likely to happen next on the XTC front? Have Andy and Colin written any new songs in the past couple of years? It seems like all the songs on the Apple Venus albums are between 3-7 years old... with that backlog taken care of, is there now another backlog of material, or have they been too busy to write? As much as I'd like to know what is happening on that front, I feel we should declare a moratorium on trading demos for future albums. I would like to hear the next XTC album with completely fresh ears - but if the demos are out there I am powerless to resist their lure! Hopefully there won't be another 7 year gap so temptation won't get the better of us all... :)

It's left me baffled and just *dying* to hear the album. It will be a sweet day indeed hearing this album. It was exciting finally hearing the polished version of AV1 but THIS experience will be like no other. Small question that has popped into my head....XTC have gone the route of sixties throwbacks with the Dukes, an orchestral album and then back to a jangly guitar fest, any thoughts on what sort of avenues any of you would like to see the band explore for the next album? I tend to be partial to their jazzy explorations such as "Miniature Sun" and would like to hear more in this direction. Thoughts? Anyone............ Anyone? ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 13 Apr 2000 02:50:30 -0700 From: Herne <herne@earthlink.net> Subject: Freaks and Geeks,XTC, Macy Gray, Giant Peach connections Message-ID: <38F59865.78E39B61@earthlink.net> More from me... Remember a couple of months ago when "No Language in Our Lungs" was played in an episode("The Diary") of the FREAKS AND GEEKS tv show? Remember wondering why? Well...I think I have a good idea. One of the writer/producers of the show is a guy named Judd Apatow. I went to film school with him at USC. Although I wasn't in the same class as him, I was acquainted with him. We were at USC between 1983 and 1987, which was a time when XTC was pretty happening college radio-wize. The Dukes/Skylarking period especially. KROQ played a lot of Psonic Sunspot. "Vanishing Girl, Albert Brown and You're My Drug" in particular. And Skylarking...well "Dear God" was all over the place. The particular major I was in was called the Filmic Writing Major. It was an attempt to raise the profile of the writer in the "film" industry (Filmic? Get it?...don't worry, few did). It didn't really work but it did start to churn out some writers who have done some things like John Singleton(Boyz in the Hood etc.), Helen Childress(Reality Bites), Tim Doyle(Rosanne, Dinosaurs, Ellen), Elisa Bell(Vegas Vacation), Scott Alexander and Larry Karasweski(Man on the Moon)...actually Scott and Larry weren't Filmic Writers but they dated some of them! A lot of people in the major were into XTC. And I mean A LOT. Never before or since have I been in an environment where so many people were into the same music I was...especially XTC. One girl who I was madly in love with, worshipped them. Alas she always had a boyfriend. I never told her I liked because she was always seeing somebody. Later she dated Jeff Barry's(Be My Baby, Do Wah Diddy Diddy, Sugar, Sugar...etc. etc. etc) son who was a genius in his own right. He was really into XTC as well. His musical career hasn't really gone anywhere. Too many demons I guess. Can't help having a father who was a song writing legend. Anyway...XTC was often played at parties. I remember being at a party with my friend Todd Slavkin who had the US cd of English Settlement and us both moaning about how it was missing "Fly on the Wall." Anyway, as so many of the people in my major were into XTC, I'll have to assume that was where Judd picked up on it. One guy in my major named David Goyer actually clued me in to the LITTLE EXPRESS. I borrowed his copies and then promptly signed up to get it. I have almost all of them. David went on to become the most successful graduate of the FMWR program. He wrote the script to BLADE and recently MISSION TO MARS. His name is always attached to comic movie projects. He is a huge comic book fan. Although the lads' music has yet to pop up in any of his stuff... you never know. Another classmate of ours was Carey Kirkpatrick. His relevance here is that he was obsessed with Roald Dahl and always wanted to write the sequel to WILLY WONKA. Well he came close by getting to adapt another work...JAMES AND THE GIANT PEACH. Sound familiar? I don't know if he was the one that tipped Disney to Mister Partridge but it seems a logical theory given the XTC passions of us Filmic Writers. I haven't seen him in forever but I did see a mutual friend recently at Disney so maybe I'll see him again to ask him about it. At the same event I also saw Bob Farrelly, one half of the Farrelly Brothers(Something About Mary) but didn't think till after he left to ask him about Peter Pumpkinhead in DUMB IN DUMBER of the rumored "I'd Like That" in "Me, Myself and Irene." One more bit of randomness...another classmate in the Filmic Writing Major...Class of '89...was a girl named Natalie. I barely remember her now. Last year she reappeared with a new name....Macy Gray. That's right, the MACY GRAY. Whether she has anything for the lads is unknown. Boy all these happening people I've crossed paths with...why can't I get my sh** together? I mean my cousin was married to one of the Coen brothers(FARGO, RAISING ARIZONA) for Christ sake! I was in a comedy group with Michael Boatman(Spin City, Arliss)! Damn! I've got to stop thinking about WASP STAR and get back into the loop and start taking over this town!! It's weird to live down the street from the Hollywood sign and two blocks from the Capitol Records building and yet be so NOWHERE in showbiz. My career path has been skirting randomly along the edge of the fringe of nowheresville out here. Pissing time away working in dead end Hollywood corporate wastelands... pausing to write an unproduced script once every three years...not very prolific. I'd have to say that I was one of those "slackers" that my generation was named for. I suppose my only truly crowning success was stockpiling so many movie posters and promo items over the years that when ebay appeared, I had quite an inventory to sell. Recently I've been working really hard to change from a dreamer to a do-er with some success. Written some short films, did a few pilots for the internet, that sort of thing. I can't wait for the day when I have my own tv shows like Judd so that I can sneak some XTC into the soundtrack...if only cause I could get them to release more stuff! So there's my theory...the USC Cinema School of the mid 80's connection....as Jack Palance used to say on Ripley's Believe it Or Not..."BELIEVE IT...gasp...or NOT!" Apologies for all the name dropping, Ken L aka Herne p.s. If you want to check out one of my short films go to NETFEST.COM. Sometimes my stuff is up there. Be on the lookout for "Did She Say Boy?" if you go there. Or go to ATOM FILMS.com and check out FAST FOOD...a Scorcese parody which I didn't write but it's really good....and really in focus(I was the A.C.) See...I'm really famous in my apartment;).

NO AMOUNT OF REVIEWING IS GOING TO SPOIL THE ALBUM! It's that simple << Well, Ed, Maybe from *your* perspective that's true, but whether you like it or not, it *can* happen. Some people find that, and whether you understand it or not, it's out there. What are we gonna do? Call the cops? To those people whose enjoyment of the album would be spoiled by reading a review of it - use a little common sense, skip past the reveiw for goodness' sake. To those who post review, use a bit of common courtesy, warn the readers of an impending review. My enjoyment of AV1 was greatly reduced because people on Chalkhills hyped it out if all proportions. When it came to it, I was very disappointed, 'cos it's a very ordinary album, especially by XTC's standards. Ed is right that it's very, very tedious reading people whinge on and on about certain postings. Remember, you can always switch with TV off and you can always press the page down key.
