I waited until I had a few things, so there! Some minor xtc stuff first. In the past, some few chalkhillers have mentioned hearing a bit of Generals & Majors on Limbaugh. Well, I recently heard the same on the Dr. Dean Edell radio show... I wonder if they share producers or something... Just 6 nights ago my wife and I were eating out at a restaurant that has the NTN trivia game on the big screen. The last question was (basically) which college radio favorites scored a hit with Mayor of Simpleton? only me and one other person (out of 25 or so) got it right (for 1000 points) and yes, that was enough to win it for me! I won the next game, too! Hmmm... I often have thought, while listening to or thinking of " Down in the Cockpit" about an old, cheesy movie I vaguely remember from when I was young...which, as part of the plot had some dude or dudes kept in a pit by some tribe of women...maybe 'Amazons' or some similar group. It starred an actor I couldn't remember by name, but I think he was in a lot of sci-fi made for tv movies. ...occasionally , over the years, I would see him, and recently decided his name is John Saxon. Figured that out while watching a Bruce Lee movie. I did a search online and I think the movie "Planet Earth" is the one which has Down In The Cockpit type theme. I too just purchased a couple of the re-masters -- Black Sea and English Settlement -- probably at the same place as Rob ($16.69...odd price...), and here are my observations (as if anyone cared...). -Black Sea sounds absolutely AMAZING!!! NOTE... no break between Language and Towers...love it! Most noticeable improvement... Travels In Nihilon....bloody fantastic! -English Settlement sounds great, but so did the earlier version (mine is a German Import), and, if I have any complaint, it's that it sounds rather BASS-y to me. Not that I don't like bass, it just sounds on the verge of muddy. Maybe I'm just too used to the original. -Why didn't they put the Cd's IN the paper lyric sheets (as in the vinyl) in BS? Those little plastic bags are annoying! Yet they DID make one of the lyric sheets able to hold a disc in ES...PLUS included the CD in the little plastic bag... very strange... Wasn't ES a gatefold...? Can't remember... -How would all of you Hillians have felt if ES had been re-issued as a DOUBLE CD in the paper sleeve format (if price hadn't been affected...)? I think it would have made for a nice package. -Does anyone out there remember the track listing for the SINGLE LP version of ES? And has it ever been released on CD? I doubt it, but....worth asking... And finally... -I noticed the puke-green paper 'bag' that BS has been re-issued in. I know that is how the original vinyl was released, but when I bought my vinyl, back in '84 or so, it was issued in a BLACK PLASTIC bag, complete with carrying handles! Also...the actual album sleeve did NOT say XTC-BLACK SEA up in the right hand corner! Does anyone else remember this? Is my mind going??? Anyway... Agreed, my memory isn't that accurate! However, you miss the
point. If you re-read my posting you'll find I was replying to someone who
perceived AP as extremely articulate, and I recalled this episode
(incorrectly) to illustrate how inarticulately articulate he could be, if you
see what I mean. The whole gist of it was the rendition of Happy Birthday was
unique, bizarre and typically AP, and telling the story was purely to get to
this truth. If the incorrect telling of the story was offensive to you, I
apologise, but surely you can appreciate the point of the thing?
I appreciate that being part of this digest is an exercise in
one-upmanship for some people (note the posts about musical integrity) in
order to elevate themselves to the status of 'true fan,' a situation I find
quite sad. As the constant bickering unfolds about who did what when and how,
my eyes glaze over. So you've got the video and all power to you, but do you
have the German version or the extended, picture sleeve, 3D Martian
collectors limited edition. Excuse my sarcasm, but do you feel it? At all?

Our Fulfillment team will ship the CDs to you immediately when they become available. It will be worth the wait, if the first batch is any indication. By the way, I ordered from HMV because they were CHEAP there. So cheap that I'm getting all 5 cd's for less than I paid for 4 ordering from Siren Disc. Siren Disc were pretty good service wise, though. We'll see how HMV works out.

I just got my Japanese re-master copies of WHITE MUSIC, GO 2 and BLACK SEA
(still waiting on DRUMS AND WIRES and ENGLISH SETTLEMENT, curses!).
So far, I've only had time to listen to WHITE MUSIC in depth. My reactions:
(1) I'm surprised at how much I really *like* having the extra tracks
located *after* the album rather than tucked in between sides A and B. I
wouldn't have expected this to make that much of a difference, but the
album just seems to flow better this way.
(2) The re-mastering is *very* nice: unlike, say, some of the recent King
Crimson re-masters, the sound doesn't seem so much drastically altered as
*restored*, as if I'm hearing information/frequencies that I always knew
were missing. Compared to the older CD, the drums have more of a "thwack"
to them and the bass is much more prominent -- but the guitars and
keyboards and vocals aren't obscured. Well done, IMHO.
(3) The irritating "pop" noise found on the old Geffen/Virgin CD at 2.45
into "Radios In Motion" -- in the "move" of Andy's final "when we move then
so do you'se" -- also appears on the new CD, though it's at 2.46 owing to
differing amounts of silence at track start. I assume this means it's
present on the original master tape. I apologise to Geffen/Virgin for
silently blaming them all these years. :-)
(4) The five photos -- one band photo, one smaller photo of each band
member -- which appeared inside the old Geffen/Virgin booklet don't appear
on the new edition (though it, in turn, restores the back cover art, which
the older CD omitted). Guess I'll have to hold on to both CDs after all.
(5) My only real gripe about the packaging: I wish they'd included proper
plastic-lined paper sleeves instead of the "elephant condom"-style U-shaped
plastic ones. The paper ones don't wrinkle and slip down the way the
plastic ones do. Ah well: I can buy these myself.
So far, I'm very happy indeed with the re-issues. More to come after I have
a chance to listen to GO 2 and BLACK SEA...

This included Thomas Dolby, Brave Combo and Sean Altman who cannot contribute due to time constraints and other conflicts. Any rumors that The Foo Fighters and Shebodah were contributing were wholly unfounded (though a member of Shebodah was interested but I haven't received anything). I was never able to find Andy Sturmer. The Paperboys and Shawn Colvin were unable to contribute due to their recording contract. So most of the people on the tribute are "reg-lur foke." A "FRIEND" OF A FRIEND OF A FRIEND The second-hand contact who approached Bill Nelson probably phrased the question poorly as Bill's response was that he hadn't heard anything about the tribute. Subsequent contact was routed through his management. THIS BUSINESS OF MUSIC Management companies always ask how much money is involved. When they find out that there is no compensation it pretty much means that the artist will never hear about the project. (Tuck Andress' management hustled me off of the phone when I stated that there was no planned compensation). WILDFIRE RUMORS The rumor that the Fire Department of Tracy, CA wants to record "Great Fire" is not totally untrue, it's not the entire department and they are lacking some the necessary musicians to complete their vision. Maybe Anton Barbeau, Khoi Huynh, Becki di Gregorio, John Wedemeyer, Endre Tarczy, Randy Hayes, John Relph and Bundy Brown could help out? ...just thinking out loud. MAYBE IF I JUST IGNORE HIM, HE'LL GO AWAY I've also had a surprising amount of artists express interest only to bail out without any notice. I've followed up with many of them only to get no reply. By now, I guess I should count them out (and maybe publish a list of names!) DISEASE AND THE DIAMOND BLUE Beyond that I have some grand interpretations of XTC songs, plenty of tracks worth hearing (at least once), a few that I dare you to try to make it through ...and just wait until you hear Mitch's latest! DANGLING CHADS For those who have never heard the Chalkhills' Children series, there will be at least 20 songs from that series. The selected songs are based on responses that I recieved from Chalkhillbillies, in case anyone thinks I'm playing favorites for including or not including any particular track. NEEDLE TRACKS At this moment, I am nine tracks shy of my minimum target so if you know anyone who has an XTC cover that they can send, I'd appreciate it. If I get more than that, I'll simply start removing some of the less favorite tracks from the Chalkhills Children series. REALITY CHECK This is not a suggestion that you START working on an XTC cover unless you can get it to me FAST. I seek any tracks that people have completed or can complete it VERY SOON (and I've already received the obligatory stinko track, so if you can't do something good, save your Dictaphone from the needless wear-and-tear of recording your little piece of "art.") It seems Kabel Media agreed to do it for a certain price and then most recently changed their mind and more than tripled what they originally agreed upon. So Andy and Colin are shopping around for someone else to do it. A few weeks ago they spent about two weeks in Idea Studios finishing off the Nonsuch abandoned studio version of Colin's "It Didn't Hurt a Bit". Apparently it sounds great now and will be in the boxed set. At this point most of the boxed set will be unreleased material including things like a slower version of "Towers of London" that would have been the original single but it was ruled out for a faster version we all know. This slow version has never been properly mixed before but it will be this week. Mitch

I was notified by HMV that The Big Express remaster (don't know about the others after it as I'm not going to order Skylarking or O&L since I have the MFSL versions) has been delayed. While I appreciate Virgin Japan going to the trouble of recreating the original artwork (and what a terrific job they've done!), I'm disappointed that Virgin chose not to include any bonus tracks on O&L and Nonesuch. The bonus track of Dear God on Skylarking is nice (and I'm thrilled that they've restored it to the original LP/CD running order with Mermaid Smiled in its proper place) but I would have also liked to have seen a couple of the demos for the SL sessions (yes, I know they're probably saving them for the boxed set but they don't need to be so cheap). NON XTC NEWS: By the way, King Crimson's Discipline, Beat and Three of a Perfect Pair have all been re-leased in gatefold sleeves with a terrific booklet for each. The sound quality is outstanding (although there isn't a huge difference it is noticeable on a good system). Discipline has an alternate version of Matte Kudasani. It doesn't sound that different from the album version but I appreciate that Fripp has finally begun adding bonus tracks to the albums. Now if David Byrne would finish the remastering of all the Talking Heads CDs I'd be a happy camper! Maybe he'd also consider finally releasing The Name of This Band Is Talking Heads on CD with bonus tracks. Until then I'll have to be happy with my bootleg CD copy.... I doubt that Andy and Colin would want to do a Behind the Music special for Vh1 but maybe we can persuade VH1 to at least contact them about doing one. It would a great chance to promote their next album for 2002 (and the boxed set, Fuzzy, etc.) It would also be a great bonanza for fans as we might be able to see some rare live footage, videos, etc. I guess I'll just have to keep wishing.. Because of the alphabetical nature of the English language, "musicforthemorningafter" will be placed near XTC in your record stores. It will also be placed near "Weird Al" Yankovic. And recent Drama Desk Award winner "Yazbek." At first listen, I was convinced that the album was nothing special -- just a bunch of pop hooks, tasteful guitar bits (that sound very much like Johnny Marr and/or Peter Buck), and Jason Falkner-esque production. At seventh listen, I can't stop humming, even though I'm still not convinced that the album is anything special. The songs are perfect pieces of pop perfection, though, and Mr. Yorn sounds like a cross between Eddie Vedder, Mike Stipe, and Morrissey. I think you'd like it. (And Columbia has priced at "The Discovery Price," which means that it retails for $9.95...Sweet!) I like XTC, too. And I have five days until graduation! Not for the first time, the duo have hit on the wheeze of compiling an album of demo recordings, and Homegrown comprises early versions of the songs which were released in completed form on last year's Wasp Star album. Given that this procedure is roughly the equivalent of me submitting for publication the various rough notes and doodles which went into the writing of this article, you have to wonder at the sheer chutzpah involved. After all, this isn't Elvis Presley or the Beatles we're talking about, but XTC, a band who may enjoy national treasure status but these days would count themselves lucky to sell 20,000 copies of a "proper" album in this country. Sounding at times like lost fragments of old Beatles songs and at others like a fully completed Keith Richards album, it is a collection that is likely to be of limited interest to even the most hardcore XTC completist.
