I was just listening to my favorite side-project this
week and thought I'd mention the greatly under-rated
MR. Bungle (Faith No More) -Perfectly demented music.
I highly recommend their last one "California".
"Disco Volante" is the album to get last and their
first one has a couple of the most obscene songs ever
recorded on it and you might be scared away.

I should say that I think of The Dukes as being more
of a concept band than a side project, like Ziggy
Stardust to Bowie. The people are the same only the
names have changed. Otherwise the Dukes would reign

find Grant Lee Buffalo's FIRST album "Mighty Joe Moon"
NOW! I have not heard "Mobilize" yet but I find it
hard to believe it could be as good as this brilliant
album. Most of the songs Grant Lee performs as the
street troubador on the TV show "The Gilmore Girls"
(yes, the same show XTC music has been featured in)
are from this one.

Having been mauled within an inch of my life on the Kinks list I'm not going to go there (well, not without provocation) other than to offer sincere comiserations and condolences to all affected by this, and to say how impressed I have been by the quiet courage of thos dealing with the dreadful task of cleaning up, and indeed with the restraint being displayed by whoever is pulling Dubya's strings. On Wed. 12 I was expecting This World Over, but I'm starting to relax ... a little. Besides that ... a fair old shit of a time, to be honest. Over the last few weeks we in Oz have lost many leading lights of our local music/cultural scene. The great Graeme "Shirley" Strachan, former lead singer of Skyhooks, latterday TV/radio personality and all-round good guy, was killed in a 'copter crash. Beloved 70s rocker, singer and songwriter Ted Mulry (leader of TMG, whose 70s hit "Jump In My Car" was covered by the illustrious Chris Spedding) died of cancer only days later. Overshadowed by the events of Sept. 11, the equally beloved poet, raconteur, Dylanologist and ratbag and all-round hip[ indentity Adrian Rawlins passed away, also from cancer. On a more personal note, Yvonne Kennedy, who was a longtime friend of my mum's, was killed in the Pentagon attack, which is still kind of hard to believe. She was travlling in America to celebrate her retirement from the Red Cross :( ... A friend at work just lost her partner to a stroke, and another longtime work colleague and friend just lost his 25yo daughter, who had just qualified as a doctor, to pancreatic cancer. "And I think to myself, what a wonderful woooild" ... NOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! On a happier note, I was pleased to drop in on fellow Chalker Brian Last (who loaned me some nifty XTC vids) and I gotts say: this boy can REALLY sing. Brian played me some of his home recordings, and I'll tell you now, if anyone is planning another Chalkhills Children -- you'd better talk to this chap. He can really cut the mustard. Most impressive. XTC related news? Jesus, nothing really, although I did have a dream recently about visiting Terry and playing bass with him. In a moment of weakness, Monsieur Culnane, who actually DID visit him not long back, revealed that our Tezza's personal fave XTC performance is "Rocket In A Bottle". :) Bloody GREAT song to play bass to. One day maybe ... In other news I exhort all and sundry to seek out the new, fabulous, wonderful, moving, funny, beautiful Ben Folds album "Rocking The Suburbs". If proof be needed that there is life after Ben Folds Five, here be it. 10/10 and some of Ben's best songs yet. "Still Fighting It" and "Not The Same" are KILLER. Little else to say other than to reassure Michael Versaci that I haven't forgotten him, and just to say hi to everyone and send love to you all and all that kind of schmookie stuff you can't help thinking about when life isn't going quite as well as you planned. Rupert Hine was a very popular producer in the 80's, best known for his work with The Fixx, who Amanda mixed up with Styx in the previous digest, among many others(a few tracks on Tina Turner's Private Dancer album come to mind, I know there were lots of others, but I'm drawing a blank now). He's done very little lately that I can think of; I guess he needed a job, he was available, and all Suzanne could afford. Maybe Mitch forgot to send the child support check. I don't think Tears for Fears was one of the bands Hine produced though.

The gallery is located in the Crown Center for the Arts on Loyola's campus, Loyola Ave. at the lake. I am also one of several artists in 'New Faces', at DeCaprio Gallery at Moraine Valley Community College in Palos Hills, IL. The show runs Oct. 2-31. Opening reception this Thursday, Oct 11. This is a faculty show (I teach at MVCC). There are more people involved and its a smallish space, so I only have two pieces in this show, but they're new works different from my usual work. The gallery is in the Fine and Performing Arts Center atrium. The campus is at 88th ave and 111th st. in Palos Hills. And, as long as I have your attention, a couple of upcoming shows: Sheetz Gallery at Penn State Altoona is doing a solo show of my work. Show dates are November 7 to Dec. 14. Christopher Art Gallery at Prairie State College in Chicago Heights,IL, is doing a show of work by faculty at several area community colleges. that show runs Dec. 7-Jan. 17. But I did. The Rupert Hine fansite (only saying good things of course) have some Suzanne fans very happy indeed with what was made. But then, what would you expect... By the way, I don't know if this is evil, but I've downloaded about 100 XTC demos from those places you're not supposed to. In the real world I've got almost everything legally (ie I own them on cd, lp, ep, 45 etc) but I still managed to find about 50 tracks I'd never heard of (ie not demos that made it onto albums). Lately I've taken over the job of deciding what music plays in the bar between sets at my band's shows. Some of you will remember that I am in a Beatle tribute band here in Hawaii called the Daytrippers (www.hawaiidaytrippers.com). The bars we play in put on the worst imaginable shit between sets. So I've taken to burning my own CDs and putting them on when we stop. First I made one of other sixties groups from Britain, like the Kinks, Who, Zombies, etc. Then I made one of solo Beatle stuff. My latest (and the XTC bit is coming, really!) is a mix of 80s and 90s pop, things like the Clash, XTC, Elvis Costello, XTC, Blur, XTC....well,you get the idea. So it is with great pleasure that I describe the following scene: The bar is full (between 50-100 people). The Daytrippers have just finished their big bang ending of A Day in the Life. Just after one Daytripper says, "thanks folks, don't go away, we'll be right back", the PA gushes forth with the glorious opening riff to "Playground". I like to think of it as a clandestine mission to force exposure to XTC on the world. Jim PS My CD also including Sense Working Overtime, Mayor of Simpleton, and my personal fave, Towers of London. Is it just me, or does Towers of London carry shades of "Listen to What the Man Says" by Wings?

Anyone who shops at Barnes and Noble for CDs, I bought a copy of White Music back in Feb (a title that they always had in stock) and there was major skipping on the second song. Anyway, they have not been able to get me a new copy after trying four times! They say the warehouse is out of stock and they have to contact the publisher. Am I insane, or are they the worst fucking company on earth? I am going to the store manager and demanding my money back and they can go to hell. I am NEVER shopping for CDs there again. Whew! Ralph

And most importantly, if we all remember to spin this strangely beautiful little gem of an album on the 17th.. well by all the goddesses on Mt. Olympus, I just know it's going to be a resounding success! Perhaps now more than ever we need a reason to be absurd, dear friends.. So instead of wasting your hard earned cash on some meaningless gift for a co-worker, invite them to join you, as I invite you to join me in celebrating all that Does Not Suck In This World.. let's immerse ourselves in the intoxicating aural wonder that is Mummer.. even if it is just for this one day.. I can tell by the way that some of you are smiling, especially that oddly dressed fellow in the third row, that you do share my vision..
