Recordings XTCfans interview with Andy Partridge Art Lyrics Chords and Tablature |

This song is also known as "Meccanic Dancing".
Andy: “A song about kids in England going to dance halls. People would get very drunk and then attempt to dance like robots to stuff like Kraftwerk.”
Andy: “Our first trip down under and jet lag hell. After a twenty three hour flight, then, on arriving in Sydney, being kept awake all that day to do press and radio interviews culminating in falling asleep live on air (between records) on Triple J, the next evening's gig with rented gear, at the Marconi Club, seemed like a night off. I felt a little sorry for Dave Gregory as ‘The Prince Phillip of Pop’ was finding it tough fitting into the Doc Martens of a recently departed Barry Andrews. Live anyway, Dave was obliged to play the older material with at least a nod in Barry's sonic direction, trussing him up between a Korg (monophonic) keyboard and guitar duties. Despite this, the lag and unfamiliar amps and drums, we turn loose a pretty hairy rendition of this Go 2 opener.”

Woolworth beauty
Factory beau
Arm in arm
They must go
To the church of dance with the light on low
Meccanic dancing oh we go
Can't wait until the weekend comes
I want to be with all my chums
Alcohol is an easy key
Helps you unwind
And dance with me
To a disco trot from Germany
I'm standing in front of this girl
I'm under a flourescent light
I've had a few beers inside me
I feel like a giant tonight

MECCANIK GROOVING
Meccanik Dancing opened Go 2 and our exercise gives you a good flavour of the verse groove. If you look closely and fiddle with the phrasing a bit you'll get something akin to Elvis Costello's Pump It Up, so maybe both Bruce Thomas (see workshop in issue 16/1) and Moulding had sampled the delights of both The Everly Brothers and Richard Hell... stranger things have happened. Other than marking the end of Andrews' tenure, Go 2 is also notable as the album where Moulding the stylist really emerges.
