Demo version.
Released in September 2004 on Fuzzy
Warbles Volume Five in the U.K.
Andy: “A truly forgotten pearl that was due to go up for XTC's Apple Venus Vol 1 album. The attractive face of gloom in one song.”
Andy: “Here's a genuine find. I started recording this on the 6th December 1994 for what became Apple Venus, promptly to dump it in a fit of pique thinking it too preachy and down. Trouble was I'd labelled it wrongly on the tape as ‘New Dark Ages’ and passed over it in compiling previous Warbles, thinking it was another demo of ‘We're All Light’. Happening upon it recently, I thought it cleaned up nicely, hardly the Dead Sea Scrolls but in highsight I can see it fitting into AV1 nicely. Burn baby burn, discontent inferno.”
[THIS SPACE INTENTIONALLY LEFT BLANK]
My land is burning
and yet I smell no smoke
no one's laughing here
which is strange my dear
as the government's a jokemy land is burning
and yet I see no flame
we just smoulder mad
while the fat cats add
all our savings to their namepity me pity me
my fair lady
pity me if you can
as I stabbed myself
with a small black cross
when I voted for that manmy land is burning
yet nothing is alight
but the hell mouth doors
of department stores
while the old must freeze all nightmy land is burning
yet nothing good's consumed
but the countryside
by the cars you ride
while in tarmac we're entombedpity me pity me
my fair lady
pity me if you can
as I stabbed myself
with a small black cross
when I voted for that manAnd my land is burning
yet nowhere is it warm
just the street stripped bare
by the crack head stare
of the brain dead skateboy swarmAnd my land is burning
while government still lied
you underestimate
all our quiet hate
and the fire still burns inside.
