I was playing "Runaways" on guitar a bit, and this sounds appropriate to me: Most of the song's just Andy playing an "Andy G5" (no thirds, just a fifth.) Chorus: Andy G5 (x.x.5.0.3.3., read low to high.) I've also seen it said that Andy used this other G5 in songs like Peter Pumpkinhead, but it doesn't sound to me like he used it in "Runaways:" 3.5.5.0.3.3 Andy doesn't move from this fifth (the irst inversion) in the chorus. Any changes you hear from a guitar, are actually the bass guitar. Verses: D7 (x.5.7.5.7.x) Fmaj7 (x.8.10.9.10.8, but don't play the High E in the first strum.) Em (x.7.9.9.8.7) A (x.x.7.6.5.5.) Verse Ends: Em (x.7.9.9.8.x) "She's worried," Em7 (x.7.9.9.8.10) "He's worried," Em6 (x.7.9.9.8.9) "She's worried," E (x.x.14.13.12.12.) "Oh!" (I was a bit uncertain of the last chord being an E so high on the neck, but live recordings from 1982 seem to indicate this is the correct chord.) After the verse's end, it's back to the chorus (G5, x.x.5.0.3.3.) again. This same fifth is played during the keyboard solo. Also this isn't in the album version, but in the March 16 1982 version: after the second verse, at the end of the keyboard solo, Andy switches from a G5 to an E minor (G bass:) x.x.5.0.0.0. This chord isn't necessary, unless you feel like playing it. Then, go back to playing the fifth. At the very end of live versions (and the BBC version,) the song ends on something I'm not quite sure of, but here are my guesses: B minor omit 5: x.x.9.7.x.x. (I can at least hear these 2 notes.) G: (x.10.9.7.x.x.) (I can't hear a G at the end here, but I should meniton it.) Judging from the Rockpalast 1982 footage, Andy moved his hand up to the 7th fret area, but I'm still not sure what exactly he played; still, this should get you close if not exact. - Austin Emerson Lucas
Date: Tue, 13 Dec 2005 17:09:52 +0100 From: Jordi Ibáñez Llauradó <lohagoporelmessenger (at) hotmail dot com> Subject: xtc songs Message-ID: <BAY113-F11D978375E7EAC7A754B66DA390 (at) phx dot gbl> OK, my first posting. please be gentle. i just want to say that that's been done with no keyboard or organ at hand, so i can't be more precise about the chords. that's why here you'll only find the basic chords: it's up to you, people that can write, read and dissect chords, to finish this work. so here it goes, all the songs in the XTC catalogue that hadn't been tabbed in this great site, from "black sea" to "nonsuch". you won't find anything from "mummer" because the whole album has already been "chorded" in this site. don't expect any riffs or arpeggios, BTW. that's as far as my skills go... maybe i should be ashamed to post something like this (so incomplete, wrong and childish) but it's just for the sake of people who just want to strum XTC songs and sing and don't care much if this is a sus4, added or other bollocks chord (and i must point that i am one of those who really care, so i'm willing to read all kinds of comments and corrections). please, john relph, erase every transcription of mine as soon as a proper tab of each song made by any other XTC fan who's more trained on guitar than me comes to your mail. songs like "the somnambulist" or "seagulls..." were meant to be played on keyboards and sound terrible on guitar. beware! RUNAWAYS intro: Gm verse: Gm-Bb-C bridge: D-F-Em-A chorus ("she's worried" part): Em -- hope that will be useful for somebody. merry Xmas! feedback welcome at jordiibanez (at) mixmail dot com or lohagoporelmessenger (at) hotmail dot com
